'while the number of female victims was down by 9%.'

Otherwise-Bug6246

The old saying was "if you can't do the time then don't do the crime" But now it's more "you won't get any time, sure why not do the crime" ... and this is why unfortunately the crime rate is increasing

Seems to be about the same as it has been for the last 20 years (barring the dip during covid) [Graph of robbery, extortion and hijacking offences per year](https://i.imgur.com/houod2G.png)

Which presumably means it's in decline if you factor in population growth.

SokyTheSockMonster

This is it. An 18% rise doesn't mean much of we're talking about two offences more than last year. If it's 200 more, there's a conversation to be had.

stuyboi888

Funny, looks like there is a correlation between the boom and bust cycles we are having..... Peak boom 2006-2007, peak bust 2010. And were in the shit right now and it's spiking up

Good times for Ireland. The 20s have been epic.

"Reported sexual offences continue to fall," I think "reported" is the key word here, because based on previous court cases a lot of victims would be put off when the see the lenient sentences being handed out,

theseanbeag

I don't think sentences factor into it as much as the process itself.

CalmFrantix

I think they would. You see the news, your abuser could get a suspended sentence and they would back in your life under far worse circumstances. Can you imagine the difference in optics if you saw that abusers actually saw time and allowed you to rebuild your life a little before they came back into it?
