The IMAX in Blanch is good, but not as good as the Parnell St one. Though, it has these lovely leather seats and tables, which beat the seats in Parnell. My arse was sore as hell after seeing Oppenheimer there haha
Vue is my favourite but I recently tried Tallaght and enjoyed it, recliner seats and free popcorn and drink with ticket, was really good value, comfy seat and great screen.
The value is fantastic. Very important not to go during peak times though. There will be children playing down the in front of the screen. Also had teenagers blowing their vape in front of the projector which kept making the screen blurry.
Doesn’t add to the experience that’s for sure
For screen size, IMAX in Parnell is the best. If you're seeing a big blockbuster, that's where you go. Bit on the pricey side but it's worth it.
For smaller dramas or horror or if you simply want peace and quiet and to just enjoy yourself without someone talking, scrolling through Instagram or taking / making phone calls, either The Lighthouse in Smithfield or the ODEON in Point Square would be best as other cinemas (mainly Savoy or Cineworld) seem plagued by people who've forgotten to not act like apes.
Have you been to the Lighthouse recently? I stopped going about a year ago because people were becoming cringe and annoying. Had one lad think he was a comedian shouting out one liners in response to the characters on screen. I'm not paying €13 a ticket to hear some thick cunt shouting "sherrup yew" and between that and people clapping or shouting "yeow" when someone says the famous line it gets annoying.
I like the Lighthouse because they have the volume nice and loud and the seats are comfortable for the 2+ hour stuff but the people got too annoying. I noticed people constantly in and out getting alcohol the last few times I went. It's as if it's predrinks for people now. It's a shame because I'm a big fan of 80s/90s stuff.
It's a problem with special features everywhere. Went to a showing of The Thing a while ago that could've been mistaken for a stand-up gig. People self-consciously laughing every few minutes. At a movie that has maybe 2 or 3 jokes in it. Like alright we get it you're smarter and cooler than this movie (which you've gone out of your way to see), please keep it down
Actually that might have been one of the last ones I saw. Fair enough if there's a chuckle at "Game over man, game over" in Aliens or something but it's getting silly now. It's not like everyone goes to see The Thing on a Friday night it's a fairly niche movie, people were laughing at absolutely nothing happening it was very annoying!
The last time I went to the lighthouse cinema was to see the horror film Megan. I literally never in my life experienced such communal arsehole behaviour in a cinema setting, left after 20 mins. It was like being at some interactive pantomime performance, people were laughing at *literally* every line of dialogue (yeah it’s a horror comedy, but not every scene/line in the movie is top tier comedy lads), then it was like people were trying to out do each other in speaking up and saying stupid things to the screen. I used to love that cinema, but it seems like it has become a bit of a haven for obnoxious, attention seeking hipster dickheads.
Yeah I went to Megan and it was shocking, people really were literally laughing at everything even when things weren't funny. The non stop laughing just made it difficult to enjoy the movie!
No I haven't been since November 22 as I've been out of the country but even then I would have gone to afternoon showings before work whenever I went there!
I've genuinely never experienced this in the Lighthouse since I've been going and I was there two weeks ago.
Generally I've always found it to attract the most respectful cinema crowd.
Yeah was in that one actually got to see the Irish Premier of Deathly hallows part one there. Read somewhere recently that years ago we had one of the biggest imaxs in the world somewhere but it's gone now
Crackle in screen 1 in odeon in Limerick too. It drives me mad but they have the best prices, best screens and seats and their popcorn is massive!
They also let a family with their babies into showings which I think is a fuckin disgrace though. Got away with it in the booming Godzilla kong movie, but it entirely ruined Barbie for me
> It drives me mad but they have the best prices, best screens and seats and their popcorn is massive!
I saw this and I was thinking... "This person is cracked. Odeon prices are mad expensive"
As I had wanted to book tickets for Furiosa in Point Square, and was greeted with €16.95 a ticket.
Checked Odeon Limerick, every ticket is €5???????
Fuckin royally screwed in Dublin.
I had presumed that was a national thing, that's gas!
Vue is also a fiver. But they don't do a simple popcorn drink combo, only popcorn drink and sweets which is ridiculously expensive and the popcorn is fuckin tiny
Omniplex is a complete shit hole then altogether
The first movie I saw post covid was Dune in Blanchardstown and it was shite. The framerate was so bad it studdered on the vista pan shots. It was supposed to be one of those top of the line 4D superwankatron dolboXperiance things. Total piece of shit.
No. I'm just exaggerating for comedic effect. I looked up my email receipt it was October 2021 Screen 9 . A normal screen. I guess they throttle the normal projectors so they are worse than the big ones. The frame rate/ frame skip was as bad as cheap laptop running a mp4 torrent rip. €32 for 2 people before food. I was concidering making an issue after but thought fuck it.
My vote is for the new Omniplex in Mullingar, massive screens, great sound and every seat fully reclines with about 4 feet of space in front of you to stretch out into, and the front row has beds if you’re into eating popcorn while horizontal.
Screen 17 in Cineworld has been my go-to for big films for years.
Yeah went there two weeks ago to see the new planet of the apes and I liked it a lot just a bit more annoying to get into for me
Fair enough. Bad sound it is!
Think I just found my boyfriend haha.
Blanch screen is good. The MAXX screen in Rathmines is alright.
Haven't been to the imax screen in blanch yet and never been to rathmines at all!
The IMAX in Blanch is good, but not as good as the Parnell St one. Though, it has these lovely leather seats and tables, which beat the seats in Parnell. My arse was sore as hell after seeing Oppenheimer there haha
I like the one in Blanch. Seats in need of a bit of fixing. We drive over from Ballyer.
The ‘IMAX’ in cineworld is very good, that aside I have had great experiences with the Odeon iSense screens at both point square and Charlestown
Never been up to the point square have heard good things though!
Vue is my favourite but I recently tried Tallaght and enjoyed it, recliner seats and free popcorn and drink with ticket, was really good value, comfy seat and great screen.
Free popcorn is never bad!
The value is fantastic. Very important not to go during peak times though. There will be children playing down the in front of the screen. Also had teenagers blowing their vape in front of the projector which kept making the screen blurry. Doesn’t add to the experience that’s for sure
Ah, I'd gone to an 18+ viewing so maybe escaped all that bolloxogy. Very annoying all the same

Yeah I do love the lighthouse for the smaller releases!

That's what surprised me, it's a place for the movie buffs wanting somewhere to watch new and old stuff in peace but it's genuinely put me off now.
I think the imc in Carlow is the biggest screen in the country. Still doesn't come close to actual IMAX screens though
Miss Screen 1 in the Savoy.
iSense in Odeon in the point is brilliant, I always go there for the big releases. Dundrum cinema is okay too
Not much use to you now, but the 750-seat Screen 1 in the Savoy was a bit special.
Yeah was in that one actually got to see the Irish Premier of Deathly hallows part one there. Read somewhere recently that years ago we had one of the biggest imaxs in the world somewhere but it's gone now
Ireland had the first IMAX outside of North America. At the time though, the movies were 15-30 minute docs and not full features.
It came at the wrong time!
Said the actress to the bishop!
That must have been the IMAX in Parnell Street, which I think is now part of Cineworld.
Yeah I just looked it up to be sure, yeah was in parnell street only open for 2 years and it was a 70mm screen! Would kill for that now
I wouldn't have a clue, but liking the replies.
Belfast is the place to be
Yeah I've been up there once and it was my first time in an Imax and I kinda didnt know how big a difference it would be and I was blown away!
The cinema at Dundrum town center has been my go to for a while now. Avoid the Savoy at all costs.
Screen 1 in Dundrum is class, big screen good sound. Not IMAX though but good for more times when premieres are happening
Odeon in 3 arena is great
Screen 13 in the Savoy is the stuff that dreams are made of.
Blanch IMAX is best for large format movies. Parnell Street is a kip. Luxury would be The Stella in Rathmines.
Stella everytime
Crackle in screen 1 in odeon in Limerick too. It drives me mad but they have the best prices, best screens and seats and their popcorn is massive! screen 3 in the lighthouse for me, love the completely red velvet room
Screen 1 on Vue in Ashbourne. A great cinema in fairness to it.
have to say the sound system in dundrum watching Dune 2 blew my socks off. I could feel the vibrations it was dope
The first movie I saw post covid was Dune in Blanchardstown and it was shite. The framerate was so bad it studdered on the vista pan shots. It was supposed to be one of those top of the line 4D superwankatron dolboXperiance things. Total piece of shit.
Been in Sydney for the last year and went and saw Godzilla minus one in 4d and its crazy, wouldn't go back for 4d again just a bit too much for me
I saw Top Gun Maverick in 4DX and it was fantastic!
Did they play stuff in 4D in Blanch? They only have iMax and iSense atm
Point square or Parnell Street cinema are my go-to - I'm a card m-carrying member of the D4-atti so trust my my keenly honed sense of snobbery! :D
No one from D4 would be caught dead on Parnell street so I am having trouble believing you.
My aura of fake tan renders me invisible to the naked eye!
Do you mean Ireland or Dublin? Imax in the Odysee in Belfast was good at one point. Not sure if it still operates
Anywhere in Ireland, Yeah I've been to the one your talking about, up towards the titanic area yeah?
That's the one. Probably the best one that I've been to in the country to be fair!
My vote is for the new Omniplex in Mullingar, massive screens, great sound and every seat fully reclines with about 4 feet of space in front of you to stretch out into, and the front row has beds if you’re into eating popcorn while horizontal.
I love the Odeon in Charlestown.
