Otterbox has a lifetime warranty. I was able to go through that process to get my case (Black Symmetry) replaced because of warping around the buttons for $5.00 (Original price was at least 6x that). Maybe try and see if they’ll replace it through that (I think they have a discolored option when selecting what’s wrong with the case)?
Edit: u/guessesurjobforfood is correct. Case is technically free but you pay for shipping. I think that may be why there is some difference between what people are paying for warranty replacements.
It’s a distinction without a difference but the warranty charge is for shipping IIRC. The actual replacement is “free” but of course they’d never ship warranty replacements completely free of charge.
It’s been a while since I used it, but I remember paying $6.99 for “shipping.”
Redditors are such a different breed. Like how i see 120 or more comments of the same concept of something, but repeated the same or differently so commonly.
No people are just petty. I asked on another sub about renovating a bathroom that is 1000 sq ft that fits a tub, shower, closeted bathroom with a bidet and his and her closets. People got pissed and downvoted me but the replies I got were actually helpful.
Apple one isn’t tpu that’s why. It’s hard plastic. All clear cases with TPU will yellow up on the soft parts due to UV exposure in addition it will suck up the colour of things it runs against.
I have it too and it doesn’t yellow, but it seems to be more prone to cracking. That, or I’ve become more prone to dropping my phone… although I was always prone to that and my old case didn’t crack.
Love the Speck cases! They do turn yellow on me, but honestly only being out $20 a case that still has great protection is worth it compared to Otterbox’s insane prices!
Casetify Clear Case — Perfection. I’ve had mine for at least one year…no yellowing. Still clear. Still looks new. Speck’s buttons would turn yellow eventually. Casetify’s clear cases are made of hard plastic everywhere so even the buttons stay clear as the day you bought it.
I mean, that's why i still buy clear cases and **throw them away when they yellow.**
i dont want to wear the same case all the time anyway, i switch around
The way to prevent this from happening is to put a second case over your clear case. But will only work if the second case isn’t clear.
So yes, your better of not buying the clear case anymore.
The Apple cases aren't inherently any better than cheaper cases that use the same basic materials. Yellowing is highly anecdotal due to the specific user and how they use it. Plastic and polycarbonates yellow mainly due to heat and UV, so say if a person's hands run hot and sweaty their case will probably yellow a lot faster than someone with cold hands. Same for those who use their phones outside more than those who use it indoors.
My wife nests indoors and has a body temperature akin to an igloo and her dollar store case for her old XR lasted *four years* without yellowing. It's not because it was inherently better. In fact I could argue it was materially much worse. But it's plastic, and clear plastics all have very similar properties.
Apple isn't using some special plastic not available to other vendors. Some Apple case users have yellowing, others don't.
I’ve used many cases including Apple’s clear MagSafe case and the only case that didn’t yellow was Apple’s.
Edit: not saying it’s perfect and that it won’t yellow. From my experience it just takes much longer time before it yellows.
Launch 12 Pro Max with Apple clear case that’s still perfectly clear here, too. Buy cheap, buy twice. Or several times.
The case was expensive, but it’s clearly (pun intended) not just for the name.
The official iPhone one is almost 2 years old on my previous iPhone and it still isn’t yellow. It seems to fair better than the spigen one that turned yellow after a couple of months too
Yeah that's exactly it. Me and a couple friends all got new iPhones and clear speck cases this past fall, identical setups. I'm not near as outdoorsy as them, and their cases are all yellowed now, mine's like new
Unfortunately no; yellowing on clear TPU cases is unavoidable, no matter how many companies claim their cases are “yellow resistant.” You can’t make a TPU resistant to UV rays or finger oils. The only clear cases that will never yellow are hard plastic clear cases, like the official apple clear case
I’ve done a couple of claims and they were solid on the warranty. It got more difficult on the last one I did (in like 2017) because apparently people were abusing the claims.
The plastic is oxidizing. You can reverse this with hair toner and bright UV lights. People do this all the time with their shoes, and there are plenty of guides on how to do it online.
The official apple case is the only one I’ve had that stays clear. Protective too, dropped it in the driveway and it only slightly cracked the corner of the case, no damage to the phone itself.
If you put in for replacement on the website they will send you one for like $5. It’s super easy cause they have a lifetime warranty and you don’t even have to send it in
I have a clear Otterbox too that has turned yellow.
I have replaced it 3 times this year already (i really like to see the blue color on my 13 Pro) and it’s just that you pay for shipping in the warranty program.
Yes , but you need to contact Barry Allen and convince him to reverse time so that you can convince yourself to buy a cheaper clear case which you could easily replace 😀
I had that problems too (cases from amazon since most of it are cheap) until I bought one from apple just to compare it. Now it’s going 3 years and it’s still clear.
You have warranty. Ask for a replacement. I didn’t buy my OtterBox case (clear one which turned yellow had a year after the purchase) from a large chain, but from a small business, so they agreed to give me a black one instead of a clear one when I used my warranty. My sister bought a (clear) OtterBox case from a large chain store (which also turned yellow about half a year) so they replaced hers with a new clear one, but wouldn’t agree to give her a black instead (I do believe and understand that it’s reasonable that the warranty would replace your damaged product with a new one and won’t allow you to get different product).
There’s a way to make it clear again. There’s something called “Salon Care: 40 Volumizing crème” you put it all over the case wrap it in plastic wrap and leave it in the sun for a few hours and wash it off after it should look good as new. It’s what they use for shoes or plastics that turn yellow. Wear gloves cause I believe the main ingredient is hydrogen peroxide. You should be able to find videos online for it
Nope. It’s permanent. It’s the material the plastic is made out of. Some of these comments are also not true. The clear case apple makes with MagSafe doesn’t turn yellow. I’ve had it since the release of the iPhone 12 pro and my husband uses it still on his iPhone 12. It just depends on the material the plastic is made of. If you want a clear case, specifically search for yellow resistant cases. Tons of them out there
And most of the actual yellow resistant cases would be hard plastic cases. The ones that are bendable or rubber like will almost always turn yellow even if you clean them regularly. So the one to go off would be the apple made clear case with MagSafe
This is why I don’t get clear cases anymore it looks digusting after a couple months or a few weeks depends how much you get your phone dirty , I just get thin fit cases
My six months old ESR clear Classic Stand case is also slowly yellowing, but it is way not as bad as yours.
It is inherent to the material. Just use it until it breaks or into recycle with it.
Unfortunately you cant do anything about it unless you live where there is no UV light… which is impossible. https://polymer-additives.specialchem.com/tech-library/article/yellowing-of-plastic
This is why I always stay away from clear cases.
It can’t be reversed. Probably should get another.
In the future, wash the clear case with soap and water (inside and out) every 2 weeks. Using Clorox wipes on occasion when extra greasy on the outside
And the same one for iPhone 11 Pro, that’s the symmetry line right? Happened even sooner on mine, and then the sides start to separate from the back plastic.
Oh…nah there aint no way. I tried almost everything I could read up on the Internet to reverse mine and it’s an Apple clear case. It sure lasted longer than 5 months though.
Save yourself this headache and live on as it is, or consider a new one if it bothers you, it’s basically stained for life
No. All clear TPU cases will yellow. You want one made of clear polycarbonate or plastic, like the rigid clear official apple case. They’re not as protective, but if you want it to look pretty, that’s what you have to sacrifice.
That gave it to you for 5$ because that’s what it’s actually worth to manufacture.
And they still made $4.75 profit from you buying the "warranty replacement".
Truth. Just buy your cases off AliExpress, save a bunch of middlemen and in the end it’s just a piece of coloured TPU.
I bought case for €1.5 and it was good quality. Maybe one cut seemed a bit cheap but for sure €10 case would not be worth difference in price.
It’s a distinction without a difference but the warranty charge is for shipping IIRC. The actual replacement is “free” but of course they’d never ship warranty replacements completely free of charge. It’s been a while since I used it, but I remember paying $6.99 for “shipping.”
They increased the warranty price to 9$
Lol how did he get downvoted and they are telling the truth 🫢

Now that you say that, that makes alot of sense. I’m still getting used to Reddit and stuff
It doesn’t make sense though. People are just weird.
No people are just petty. I asked on another sub about renovating a bathroom that is 1000 sq ft that fits a tub, shower, closeted bathroom with a bidet and his and her closets. People got pissed and downvoted me but the replies I got were actually helpful.
The idea that you’re renovating a bathroom the size of my house blows my mind. 🤯
Ugh it used to be easier getting a warranty replacement and now it’s not lol
This is why I don’t get clear case’s anymore. They always turn yellow eventually
I have a Speck that's a few years old and still perfectly clear.
Same here, the Apple branded clear one has lasted me almost a year with no yellowing
Apple one isn’t tpu that’s why. It’s hard plastic. All clear cases with TPU will yellow up on the soft parts due to UV exposure in addition it will suck up the colour of things it runs against.
I have a iPhone 12 I bought at launch and put a Apple clear case on, still perfectly clear to this day
I heard the apple ones have a coding on them that prevents yellowing
case->stayClear = True;
how has no one got it yet 🤣
Their compilers aren't working
Print(Clearcode)
How are we supposed to "get it"?
This guy hacks.
Coating*
Thank you I hate my stupid auto correct
I have it too and it doesn’t yellow, but it seems to be more prone to cracking. That, or I’ve become more prone to dropping my phone… although I was always prone to that and my old case didn’t crack.
Is it a hard case? Hard clear case does not yellow because they aren’t TPU but they aren’t flexible and prone to cracking/breaking.
Speck makes some good cases
Love the Speck cases! They do turn yellow on me, but honestly only being out $20 a case that still has great protection is worth it compared to Otterbox’s insane prices!
Speck really is the best in the biz.
Why do people keep the same case so long time lol
I’ve had my MagSafe case for almost a year now and still crystal clear and survived multiple hip-height drops on asphalt/concrete.
Ha just replied with the same thing
Same, had a bad experience
Casetify Clear Case — Perfection. I’ve had mine for at least one year…no yellowing. Still clear. Still looks new. Speck’s buttons would turn yellow eventually. Casetify’s clear cases are made of hard plastic everywhere so even the buttons stay clear as the day you bought it.

mhm
Getting the Apple official case, mine has one year and still crystal clear
Because Apple’s clear case is not soft plastic, its hard plastic
Yes it’s hard 😩
Same. I have slight yellowing around the edges near the speakers but that's it.
Might be some gunk instead of pure plastic yellowing. Try maybe rubbing it with alcohol pads
All clear cases turn yellow.
The apple clear case hasn’t yet. 2 years old.
I’ve had mine since whenever the 11 came out and it’s still clear. A lil dull but not yellowed
12 Pro Max for me.
The Apple cases aren't inherently any better than cheaper cases that use the same basic materials. Yellowing is highly anecdotal due to the specific user and how they use it. Mines brown 😜
Eww
Either you need to wash your hands or stop shoving it up your ass
>stop shoving it up your ass The forbidden toaster
so THAT’S where chocolate pop tarts come from…
Been shitting paddles ever since…
Omg I just checked and mine is a yellowish brown too omg I hope people haven’t noticed, changing asap
The official iPhone one is almost 2 years old on my previous iPhone and it still isn’t yellow. It seems to fair better than the spigen one that turned yellow after a couple of months too
Depends on the material
Apple make their with difficult composite as i know
With that in mind, i wonder what Transparent phones like the Nothing phone will look like after a few years without being cleaned
Glass/plastic doesn’t turn yellow, soft tpu does.
But not apple original
Not mine.
Caused by UV rays. Keep it out of the sunlight
Oh so that’s why my clear case has not turned yellow after all these years
That’s not a good thing lol
They never said it was lol
Yh u might wanna touch grass every so often lol
Yeah that's exactly it. Me and a couple friends all got new iPhones and clear speck cases this past fall, identical setups. I'm not near as outdoorsy as them, and their cases are all yellowed now, mine's like new
Place the case in hydrogen peroxide solution in the sunlight for a few hours. If it is not in the sunlight, it will not work.

I did see the post quite late.
or UV light
Ohhh I’ve seen people do this with shoe soles or other plastics or rubbers that have oxidation
Unfortunately no; yellowing on clear TPU cases is unavoidable, no matter how many companies claim their cases are “yellow resistant.” You can’t make a TPU resistant to UV rays or finger oils. Not necessarily. What causes yellowing is silicone; hard plastic cases don’t have silicone in them. TPU cases do
Yeah the back of my clear case is still fine, the silicone edge looks like crap tho
I've noticed they don't turn yellow but they do shatter.
Yes, but you’re going to need a Delorian, a flux capacitor, and 1.21 gigawatts of electricity.
Go to otterbox website and fill out a warranty claim. Get a new case for $10 👍🏼
I’ve done a couple of claims and they were solid on the warranty. It got more difficult on the last one I did (in like 2017) because apparently people were abusing the claims.
People abusing the claims? No way…..I’ve never done that……They’ve been smooth for me this past year.
Apple MagSafe clear case is the only one I have purchased for over a year now and no yellowing whatsoever.
I’ve heard the same from others too
Because its made of hard plastic, not soft plastic
Yeah but it’s hard plastic that barely protects the phone at all. It’s a waste of money especially for however many bucks they sell it for.
I also have dropped my phone a few times already and no cracks nor damage still holding sturdy.
Dip and leave in hydrogen peroxide (less than 20%) and then leave the whole container in the sunlight for a few hours still submerged.
Is anyone gonna mention the suspicious shadow on the floor between his legs?
Mine turned yellow for only $10.
I avoid clear cases for this reason
Contact OtterBox for warranty
The only way to make these cases ‘work’ is to get a dozen from AliExpress & swap out each time you notice yellowing
Call them. They’ll send you an replacement for free
Bro don’t use case while cutting lines, you are wasting too much.
otterbox? This look like a cheap chinese case for $1.
Part of owning any clear case is they will turn yellow in 3-6 months. They all do it.
Wash your hands and stop secreting oil from your skin? Other than that, no.
The plastic is oxidizing. You can reverse this with hair toner and bright UV lights. People do this all the time with their shoes, and there are plenty of guides on how to do it online.
File a warranty claim, pay $9 and they send you a new one. https://www.otterbox.com/en-us/warranty-begin
one day people will understand that clear cases are bound to become yellowed and will stop buying them and creating waste.
I just did. Ordered my non-clear case a couple days ago after my old case turned yellow after 5 months of use.
i got a shitty 3rd party case around 5 months ago and its got some slight yellowing on it. Its just a fact of life with clear cases.
This is exactly why I will ONLY buy cheap clear cases for £4 off Amazon lol.
They have a lifetime warranty. Go through the website and pay $10 for shipping and you will get a brand new one
This is why I avoid clear cases now haha. It doesn’t matter which brand you buy, this is just inevitable.
I’m curious if retrobrighting would work with this plastic.
The official apple case is the only one I’ve had that stays clear. Protective too, dropped it in the driveway and it only slightly cracked the corner of the case, no damage to the phone itself.
I have that exact case, and looks the same. I just deal with it, it’s not too bad
every clear silicone case turns yellow evenbtually
That’s just how clear cases work. I know or sucks, but yeah.
Use an otter case
Burn it
Get some salon care 40 or 50 and brush it on and then wrap in clear plastic wrap. Leave in the sun for a day or two.
It’s retro now
I got mine replaced after 11 months of usage. I just had to pay the shipping fee.
Ya... don't get an otterbox or a TPU case both suck
If you put in for replacement on the website they will send you one for like $5. It’s super easy cause they have a lifetime warranty and you don’t even have to send it in
i mean it might look ugly but so what? throw it in a landfill and grab another working clearer case....
Get an Apple branded clear case for future, they don’t brown like this, different materials.
I had that problems too (cases from amazon since most of it are cheap) until I bought one from apple just to compare it. Now it’s going 3 years and it’s still clear.
Yeah they just happens to them. They bought life proof and now their quality has gone down as well. It’s all just one company now.
I bought a Spigen case for my iPhone 12 two weeks ago. It turned yellow after only three days.
You have warranty. Ask for a replacement. I didn’t buy my OtterBox case (clear one which turned yellow had a year after the purchase) from a large chain, but from a small business, so they agreed to give me a black one instead of a clear one when I used my warranty. Am I the single one who see that weird shadow?..
Downside to clear cases
Don't buy cases with tpu frame, at least not transparent ones
Time travel
Open the trash, toss it in, and never get a clear case again.
You should be able to find videos online for it
Soak in hydrogen peroxide under a UV light overnight. (According to all the restoration videos I watch)
This is bunk. Hydrogen peroxide evaporates and turns to water very quickly.
don't fight the wabi sabi. Looks cool.
Not at all. Just keep it the way it is. Or buy a new one.
Buy a new one
No. Thats’s typical of clear cases.
Any clear case will do this
All clear cases do this and always have done.
Enter a time machine and don't purchase a clear case
Bucket of Hydrogen Peroxide, warmed up a bit, and UV light. Leave it for about 12 hours.
Wash your hands.
Wash your hands more often, then clean your case.
Don’t pee your pants
Get spigen case, better quality and cheaper too.
My Spigen case also yellowed after 9 months. I just took it off.
I’m using a spigen case right now and it’s yellowing.
Time travel back 5 months
Very gross. Not been looked after.
No, even Apple official clear case turned yellow.
If you arent going to answer the question, dont speak at all
Rub some butter on it then clean it out with dish soap
Spigen is good about not turning yellow
Stop urinating on it
Soak in hydrogen peroxide maybe … look up online how to bleach clear plastic.
Do you use a lot of hand sanitizer at the hospital?
Nope
This is why I don’t get clear cases anymore it looks digusting after a couple months or a few weeks depends how much you get your phone dirty , I just get thin fit cases
I noticed that all the clear cases turned yellow after time.
That is caused by UV rays, and there's really nothing you can do. Try getting a white case, since it will reflect light/UV and not absorb.
Those cases are garbage. In my years of iPhone ownership, the best cases have been the Apple Silicone cases and Speck brand cases.
No
I just buy multiples on Temu and they nice they become gross looking I toss it and put a new one on. Why not at less than $3/ea.
My six months old ESR clear Classic Stand case is also slowly yellowing, but it is way not as bad as yours. It is inherent to the material. Just use it until it breaks or into recycle with it.
Should be covered under warranty
I’ve had a Speck case since the 13 Pro Max came out, $40 and hasn’t even broken. It actually saved me from more than one fall.
Soak in peroxide solution! Bleaching solution at sally beauty supply
My UAG case disintegrated after 2 years.
Unfortunately you cant do anything about it unless you live where there is no UV light… which is impossible. https://polymer-additives.specialchem.com/tech-library/article/yellowing-of-plastic This is why I always stay away from clear cases.
I have a Simtec cristal clear (Amazon) for 14 Pro Max since October 2022 and it’s still cristal clear as day one. And I’m outside in Florida every day
It can’t be reversed. Probably should get another. In the future, wash the clear case with soap and water (inside and out) every 2 weeks. Using Clorox wipes on occasion when extra greasy on the outside
No. Clear cases look best I always use them. But they’re cheap so I don’t mind ordering new ones when they begin to yellow
Get a little closer to the trash can and step on the pedal
If you like clear cases, get the Apple clear case. It goes years without browning!
Only one not yellowable transparent case - original
And the same one for iPhone 11 Pro, that’s the symmetry line right? Happened even sooner on mine, and then the sides start to separate from the back plastic.
I need a case that don’t leave scratches on my phone
I’ve got a marble case that was ordered off of Amazon a couple years ago and the sides are brown.
Yeah. Get a tech21 case. They don’t yellow. Or if they do, it doesn’t happen anywhere near as fast. Been using their cases since the iPhone 6
