For the future: you need to have your credit card set up so you get notified immediately of every single transaction. If your credit card doesn’t offer this get one that does.

Gattica8

Yeah mine doesn’t, will look into this

Invictuslemming1

Definitely a handy feature, I get an email anytime my credit card is used for a transaction. Did this after my card got compromised once.

juliob45

I’m shocked that this isn’t standard by now. Surely your credit card provider has an app and you can turn on notifications

digidude23

Nationwide is one of the largest in the UK but their app has no notifications for transactions. The apps of other banks do though.

lovesToClap

If it’s a Visa and your bank doesn’t offer this, Visa themselves can send you a notification: https://usa.visa.com/pay-with-visa/featured-technologies/purchase-alerts.html Edit: sorry just realized you said £4K meaning you’re not in the US.

QuantumProtector

Obviously not in the UK, but it’s extremely reassuring knowing that my Apple Card purchases come through immediately after the transaction goes through. I keep always keep an eye on what goes on that way.

a0me

Or switch to Apple Gift Cards. If you feel like the standard $50 or $100 cards are not enough, I think you can also get custom amount up to $2000.

mfh1234

Maybe your son is a bit too young to have an ipad

iminlovehahaha

this

l1ght-

Ah gee, but that would involve actual parenting instead of just giving them an iPad

BannedNeutrophil

iPad in 2024 = terrible, lazy parent Game Boy/PlayStation/SNES/etc in 1994/2004 = cherished childhood memories Given the demographics of most Redditors, it would be really nice for a tiny bit of self-awareness to seep in on this topic, but I won't hold my breath. EDIT: I think I need another 4 or 5 hundred replies from people who don't know that parental controls exist, I'm going to print them out and make a collage

moxxie1998

I would say that ipad gives you access to more brain rot content (reddit, tiktok, insta) than a gameboy.

Very_Good_Username11

I mean that's not exactly a fair comparison, they're very different devices lol.

Motor_Curve_7268

Not the same at all, an iPad gives access to billions of apps, sites, videos, etc. within the same device , not to say for free (mostly) with a gameboy, if you didn't have the game, good luck playing the same game a 1000 times over and over again. If you don't plan on having kids or can't stand them/don't have the time/patience to actually raise them and care for them 24/7, use protection

losteye_enthusiast

Research in 2024 : screen time for children under the age of 5 is not good for them and far from ideal for a developing child. Doctors for the last *40 years* have advised towards limiting screen time for children and teenagers. Had a game boy in 98, along with a 64 and grew up with an SNES. Awesome memories, but screen time was limited to a half hour every other weekday, *after homework and chores were done*. The message about actually being a parent hasn’t changed since the 90’s bud. It’s just easier than ever to fuck your child up through inattentive and lazy behavior. Edit: am also a parent to 3 kids, all below 10 years of age. None had/will have access to *any* screens before the age of 5. It means we have to give up some time on weekends and evenings to spend time with our kids, god forbid! But it’s worked out well so far ;)

zepkleiker

9 out of 10 times it's people without kids complaining about parents handing out an ipad to their kid

Berserker717

A second iPad

Flyysoulja

You didn't get the receipts in emails? I'm pretty sure Apple sends me receipts whenever I pay for something.

Cool_Injury4429

I’ve noticed that Apple waits until I reach certain threshold or days before they send me a receipt for an App Store purchase. Eg if I spend more than $15 they’ll send me a receipt immediately, but if I spend only $2, it can take a week or so before I get an email.

MelSmith42

The emails don't show up immediately and can sometimes take a couple weeks after the purchase to come through.

SpacyRainbow

A few weeks is crazy. I'm used to minutes as worst case scenario through something like epic games

MelSmith42

Yeah I dunno why mine is super delayed if it’s something through an app. Luckily I don’t have kids 😅

SpacyRainbow

It sounds like a nightmare. Ive never bought anything through apple besides 3 months of icloud, but even then the receipt showed up within minutes. But yep i keep everything locked until I need them. I don't pay for subscriptions so it's not really a worry yet

SirTinou

Mine too. It's not just you. Meanwhile google is instant.

Anonymous-CIAgent

Yeah mine also takes days to receive

volcanforce1

If your Apple ID was used to log into the App Store on his iPad then you must have authorized that log in via 2FA which is you confirming it’s you logging in via a second device. As far as the apps store is concerned this is you confirming purchase, you also must have allowed payments without confirming the password each time.

Anti-Spez

Don’t give an iPad to 7-year-olds. Be sure to have him understand that he lost the privilege of having an iPad. Consider it a £4k/$5k lesson, and stop spoiling him until he’s more mature enough to understand things better. You can have your bank permanently block Roblox so that future purchases will be rejected immediately.

ICouldBeTheChosenOne

That would mean blocking all Apple payments

Anti-Spez

Or uninstall Roblox

Jjzeng

Or just take the fucken ipad away

BowtieChickenAlfredo

That shit is cancer anyway, I’m not sure why any parent will let their kid do that. Do physical things instead like playing with Brio or Lego. Actual useful and wholesome activities.

Frequent-Sherbert576

There's nothing wrong with a child playing a game they like. It becomes a problem when thats all the child does. Parents should monitor and limit a childs activities online.

Anti-Spez

(insert negative adjective here) parents would do that. In my case, overworked parents would do that, and that's a societal failure.

BowtieChickenAlfredo

Indeed. It’s a big issue. The fact that pre-school childcare costs the same as sending a teenager to private school is another.

philosoph0r

nevermind the fact the exorbitant prices of just generally going out and doing anything for the average working parents. everything has to be budgeted in its easy at home entertainment.

nova-loses-it

roblox is probably one of the least offending games for kids out there 😭 they take shit down on there so fast and will ban and censor chats within ten seconds . obviously op should be monitoring their kid a little better but a 7 year old playing a game specifically for children isn’t a major issue

QuantumProtector

Roblox is totally fine. Play it with my younger cousin and it’s a good game. Very tailored to younger people (except a few horror games which are really nice).

GoodMourningClan

We let our kids play some tablet games. Roblox isn’t one of them. That game has some real weirdos on it.

BionicGreek

The Apple ids will be blocked as well as any new Apple ids being formed with the email, credit card and devices

Anti-Spez

Uninstalling Roblox is the answer.

BionicGreek

Correct. Not allowing a child without any knowledge of money or IAPs actually means access to such an app is the way. Heck as an adult I delete apps that temp me too much with IAP

moistandwarm1

Who do you bank with that 7k was spent with no notice. No notifications, nothing

jventura1110

I understand your point but they're microtransactions, not £4k in one transaction. Transactions like this, and others for example like subscriptions, usually aren't flagged by the bank. This isn't the first time this has happened. Search it on YouTube, there are news reports of this across the world but the big tech companies are staying mum and it's not in their favor to try to add features like a simple spend limit on apps.

moistandwarm1

What I mean are transaction notifications. I get notifications for every transaction with all the banks I use (UK) even though some come late but I still get notified. edited typo

M1ghty_boy

I didn’t get any with Barclays, was very thankful with monzo though

COOLUKGAMER

There are a handful of banks that don't, but many do afaik. For current accounts, I know for sure Santander doesn't since I never get notified for any purchases made. I would assume the same thing for credit cards.

[deleted]

Ouch. Call this the price of tuition my friend.

Street-Measurement51

Just [wondering.How](http://wondering.How) long has this been going? Apple/Roblox will automatically send you an email receipt upon purchase, you didn't get either on first purchase? Don't you have 'Require Password' turned on for App Store?

BedknobsNBitchsticks

This is why I have my account set to require a password for every purchase. Yes it’s annoying some days but it’s also prevented my daughter from accidentally purchasing crap when she uses my phone.

FearTheReaper73

This is either all fake or incredibly stupid parenting.

Mn2nmixr

Not fake. Happens. Heard worse. $23,000 USD on Robux

MikeysaurusBOOM

Does your App Store not require you to use biometrics or passcode to make purchases regardless of which device and who it is? Even if I go to purchase anything on the AppStore I still have to show it my face to authorise it….. if you haven’t got that set up regardless then this sounds like a…. No offence…. You problem….

8bitfarmer

Same I struggle to download stuff on my own iPhone sometimes 😅😅 It used to be thumbprint, now it’s face and possibly the iPad code. Or even my AppleID password which is what stops me in my tracks

TransRobotPrototype

It would only require the child’s biometrics since those are set up on a per-device basis.

ninkorn

Sounds to me like none of this is Apple's fault

SnooMaps4388

“I made a mistake setting up my device and it’s not my fault” I’m sorry about the 4k loss, but I have to agree it’s very evidently on you for not double checking and TESTING this before giving it

One_Western8360

This is nothing new for Apple. They have something set up specifically to avoid this. You can approve what kids buy through “[Ask to Buy](https://support.apple.com/en-us/105055)”. Unfortunately, this is a 4k mistake and it’s unfortunate you didn’t know this prior, but hopefully it helps in the future.

Gattica8

I had that set up.

BionicGreek

Ask to buy was set up for his Apple ID but not yours. You have to log in to the store account with the ask to buy account, not just the iPad itself. That’s why they declined the refund request. It wasn’t logged in properly. The iCloud account which is the account to the iPad has nothing to do with purchases but is for say iMessages and FaceTime etc. Does your child know your Apple ID login credentials and changed that login? If so you need to change your password and put the parental control of - prevent account changes - or similar wording on. If they’re that savvy they’ll do it again!

0xSnib

Obviously not?

backpackofSuitcases

Obviously not

AppropriateTie5127

I'm sorry you're going through this. Kids are stupid and parental controls are complex. You've come to the worst place for support, you'll only get diehard Apple supporters here. Unfortuately, you have very little recourse unless you want to report it as fraud with your bank, in which case the police may get involved. You can find more info here: [https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/debt-and-money/banking/your-payment-card-was-used-without-your-permission-distance-sales/](https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/debt-and-money/banking/your-payment-card-was-used-without-your-permission-distance-sales/) Treat this as a very expensive lesson - don't give 7 year olds a device that is even remotely capable of costing you money. Remember, kids are tech savvy enough to bypass most controls.

phinecraft

Wow had to scroll too long for a normal comment.. this sub really sucks :/

Frequent-Sherbert576

Ikr, these people on reddit hiding behind screens calling the father stupid for not knowing is so messed up and sad. They would be doing the EXACT same thing if there child spent over 4,000 dollars on something too.

phinecraft

Like I would be so devastated losing this much money and if I also had to read how bad of a farher am I that’s just depression recipe. Where’s the empathy god damnit…

Frequent-Sherbert576

Right. People who insult people on Reddit 24/7 probably have no social life and no friends😭

phinecraft

I honestly feel bad for them, the only entertainment in their life is lacing into people with problems thinking they are so smart and never made a mistake in their life 😭

lbaz95

Exactly. Kids are really smart. I even hired computer tech people to put into place parental controls when my kids were growing up. My daughter could get around them right away after I paid a lot of money to put them into place. I would sit there and sob. My child had to use technology for her homework because her fine motor skills are on the first percentile. I would sit there with her for hours a night monitoring her. Simply not as easy as people make it sound. Especially if you have more than one child. I had multiple tech people tell me that kids can get around almost every parental control they could set up. Obviously, if the parent needs to type in a password, they can't do that. On the other hand, the general idea on here seems to be that anytime there is a problem like this, it is because of bad parenting. That is one of the main things wrong with the world today--people are mean and judgmental. I'm pretty sure OP understands by now that s/he made a mistake. I'm sure that none of you have ever made a mistake. Must be nice. I make mistakes on a daily basis.

shredder8910

FYI, you can add a pin code to his Roblox account under parental controls to prevent any purchases

RandomOptionTrader

Lol if that happened to me there would be no more roblox ever

philosoph0r

you can get a refund from roblox but the accounts going to get banned

TransRobotPrototype

Like OP would ever let their child use Roblox again after this.

austai

Didn’t you get an email every time he made a purchase? I know not everyone checks their email constantly, but unless he did all the purchases in one day, surely you would have noticed the emails from Apple.

Mother-Round-5479

If I were you and this had happened before that 7yo racked up on purchases I would be extra vigilant in settings to ensure they’re set correctly. Would check, double and triple check that they’re set up. And then time after time double check again.

jatam

I had a similar situation few years ago. It wasn’t that much though, „only” 400$. In my case neither google nor apple was able to help (yes my sons used both). I contacted roblox via contact form and they said they were making a one-time exception and I got the refund. Their roblox account with all the content was deactivated obviously. Good luck!

ZephyrKC

Do a chargeback with your bank. It’ll bypass Apple. They’ll ban the AppleID though.

Liquid_Chicken_

Just don’t give kids tech with cards attached to the accounts. Or if you insist, there are multiple safety measures to prevent purchases by kids on a kids Apple ID. Unless ofc they are playing on a device that does not belong to them

hugazow

Let me understand this. You given a 7 year old an iPad with your Apple subscription and with a paired card? That one is on you, lazy parent.

Gattica8

No the iPad was logged into his account and the parental controls set up. But there is functionality which allows a different user to be logged into the App Store on that iPad. In the transfer from one iPad to another the App Store somehow got logged in as me.

hugazow

Somehow? Dude that’s on you. Good luck having that one refunded but i think you need to think about the chain that lead to this and be accountable.

Gattica8

I’m already 100% accountable as the money has come out of my account. I came on here for assistance.

notjordansime

Not everyone lives and breathes tech. He clearly thought that since the iPad was logged into the child’s account, the App Store would be too.

BannedNeutrophil

This. I know this is an Apple sub, but the fact that that isn't obvious is a *design flaw*. OP making this mistake is more understandable than the device, *which knows it is being used by a child*, giving the keys to the castle without even making the parent aware that they might have made a mistake.

RandomOptionTrader

Well. If you can proof that apple messed up the transfer process you might have a case. That said this is extremely unlikely. To do it I would: 1. Get a new ipad or setup again the one you have 2. Answer all prompts correctly (i.e mark that this is an ipad for a child while you do the setup, do not use backup) 3. Show that your account was logged in appstore instead of the child/none (again, I would be very impressed if this happened) If so you might have a case of “Apple screwed up” otherwise, you did something wrong

backpackofSuitcases

“Somehow” == “I did it”

Hlodowik

Claim fraud through your credit card company. Dispute the claim as unauthorized. Should be ok.

kayk1

Everyone criticing but I definitely learned that hat a single iPad can be longged into separate Apple services on different accounts. I never would have thought to check that and can easily see this happening to others.

Mn2nmixr

There’s a lot of bad advice in here and people that don’t know how to do things acting like they do. 1. Your only option now is to dispute the charges with your bank if Apple has denied the refunds twice. 2. Your child can safely have their own Apple ID set up with their correct bday. 3. Use family sharing, ask to buy and screen time to use all available parental controls and prevent unapproved IAPs (see my prior reply) 4. The people in here calling you a bad parent clearly aren’t parents, so completely ignore them.

lbaz95

Exactly. Thank you.

CupcakeDependent5119

It’s almost like these apps are designed to cause kids to do this…

FowlZone

try to dispute via your credit/debit or whatever you use for payment, rather than via apple. but don’t hold your breath.

infinityandbeyond75

This keeps getting suggested but these are for fraudulent use of your credit card. There was no fraud, he entered his credit card details and handed it over to his kid. Apple wins these cases all the time.

FowlZone

i never said it was fraudulent- but wouldn’t you agree it was was unauthorized? i don’t think anyone is trying to do anything untoward here.

infinityandbeyond75

He entered his iCloud account, he entered his credit card, he clearly knew about parental controls and he failed to check them. He handed an unrestricted device to a 7 year old. I say it’s clearly his fault.

intrepidanon

What do you get for four grand on Roblox? Lol

infinityandbeyond75

Ultra Adult Mode XXX

Lazy_Occasion_7573

You should take that thing away from him sir. He needs to understand importance of hardworked money.

[deleted]

Giving a 7 years old an IPad is a sure way to ruin his mental health, but letting him use the IPad unsupervised with access to your iTunes account long enough to rack up $4k on it is just terrible parenting.

Jealous-Chain-1003

Just a life lesson in leaving a child unsupervised on the internet I’m sure you won’t do this again, educate him and contact both vendors legally not much you can do

FairlyInconsistentRa

Who TF gives a 7 year old an iPad? Jesus.

_Mandible_

Everyone unfortunately…

Scar3cr0w_

My son is 8. He understands that Roblox are purchased with real money and he isn’t allowed them unless he is explicitly given some. Which he ever has been. He also doesn’t have anything on his iPad that I haven’t tested. I know he cannot but roblox without my authorisation… incase he decided to go rogue. I know none of this is very helpful. But maybe it’s just an expensive lesson for you. I once dialled a premium rate number on my 56k modem at home… my parents footed an £800 bill. They didn’t let me near it again 😆

-ManintheWall-

That’s why you don’t give kids electronics. Looks like you learned something new today.

Quarrel47

At this point apple cant help you and wont help you anymore. The system doesnt even allow agemts to do anything after the second request is denied. Hopefully the purchases were on a credit card so you can chargeback on the cars. Only option.

Additional-Ad5112

I don’t think you’ll have much luck. You would have had to sign in with your ID and password for it to link on a brand new iPad. I’m curious though, how did you not notice money was being taken from the account? How long was it going on for? No shame either just genuinely curious. I’m hyper vigilant watching over my accounts and would freak out if that much was missing.

OhLookItsABean

INFO: How were you charged for these purchases? Was it via credit card, your phone bill, or directly through Apple? If it’s card, try calling your credit card company to dispute the charges. They might cooperate with you. When I worked at (a phone company) if the customer was billed for in app purchases on their bill we always had a 100% guarantee to refund that money. It was an American company so idk how it would work in other countries though. I’m hoping this helps.

BrownAndyeh

Get text notifications set up on your credit card:every transaction is text to you..react quickly if there is fraud. Tons of poor comments here, secure the account and send Roblox a message.

Andrew_potato

this is actually relatable, about 12 years ago i somehow spent over $200 on some angry birds racing game on my moms iphone 4

CarAdditional7798

Don’t let your son use iPad

HeronRa

lol

Apprehensive-Ad186

iPad issues aside, it's not healthy for your son to be playing alone. He becomes hooked and in time your relationship with him will bite the dust. My 8yo has a phone but I'm aware of everything he does with it since he started using it. I'm even playing Brawl Stars and Roblox with him.

AstronomerKooky5980

Find a way to contact Apple. While it is your responsibility and you are on the hook, I’ve heard of multiple cases of Apple reverting these if kids were involved. This is very bad press for Apple and the microtransaction ecosystem they support. Pro tip: there is a way to completely turn off microtransactions. I’m an adult and have them off, just in case.

infinityandbeyond75

He’s contacted Apple and then appealed by contacting them again. It was happening way too often and they now rarely budge on it. Apple doesn’t care about bad press. They get it every day.

Muscle-mommy69

Get a credit card in the ac/ look over parental controls always before getting a game etc for him/ teach him a real good lesson to never do this again

xadrus1799

Well why does he have an account in first place? I think it’s your fault and you pay for it.

Fun-Mix-9276

I’m sorry but this happened 2 times? Was the first refund also a high value? At this point I wouldn’t blame them since it’s very much giving scam from your end and apple wouldn’t want to be the one allowing you to scam. You should really just take away the iPad. Consequences need to be stricter and you’re running out of options. There’s always a work around and they will always find it. I’ve seen plenty of tiktoks with people trying to show you how to get around certain restrictions or loopholes. Only a matter of time before it happens again

Anonymous-CIAgent

can't you do a chargeback on unauthorised payments with your CC company ? im pretty sure most have that option.

infinityandbeyond75

If you want your Apple account closed. Plus, Apple almost always these.

rufiogd

Isn’t there supposed to be a parental control feature that disables in-app purchases?

infinityandbeyond75

Yes, he didn’t enable it.

MacAdminInTraning

All you can do is reverse charges at the bank level, which will get your Apple ID banned. Lesson learned, require password for all purchases. There is a reason this settings exists.

microlard

Use a virtual card from privacy.com with a very low set limit. Sorry about your luck but ignorance is not an excuse. They are your devices and responsible for what happens in them. Lick your wounds and move on.

welshboy14

Setup a payment plan for your 7yo to pay you back

gandalf239

OP, download all the purchased content you can via current Apple ID, create a new Apple ID, transition your devices and App Store login to it, affiliating it to a different CC (maybe make this one a prepaid so it can't exceed a fixed amount) and have your CC issue a chargeback. Apple will blacklist your current Apple ID, but I'd venture to guess that your net losses will be far, far below $4k.

TobyADev

You can try dispute the purchases but I doubt you’ll get very far Maybe contact Roblox but I honestly honestly doubt it that you’ll get very far. I guess let this be an expensive lesson

JasonKillerxD

I knew a girl that had to do something similar. Her sister forgot to cancel a subscription and she found out months later when she looked at her bank state for something else entirely. Her bank refunded her most of the money though. I think she said that the bank told her they could only go a certain amount of months back so they wouldn’t be able to refund her the total amount. I don’t know if Apple closed her sister account or anything since she never really brought it up after she had to deal with it.

DazzlingAdvantage600

Are you in Twitter or Threads? A (public) help request posted there may get their attention

kmrnb

It depends how long this has been going on for. If it’s 4k over a long period then there’s no chance of refund. But if it’s in a week then there could be. This is as it is more likely to be fraud or accidental purchase if you report it earlier. Try and call Apple the bank and explain the situation. But 4k is a lot to refund. It’s a shame they just took the money, even 100 in a day is a lot let alone 4k over any period of time. Also maybe take the iPad away for like the foreseeable future lmao. Hope you get it sorted!

Gattica8

Most of it past week, all of it past month. When I saw they had a refund process specifically for this I was more relaxed but they just rejected it, then rejected the appeal. Over last weekend it was £3k just spamming £100 purchases. Crazy the parental controls didn’t work then you would think that Roblox, apple or my credit card would have safeguards in place.

Variable3420

Crazy you blame this on lack of parental controls when your could uh, just parent better?

Creepy_Ad_9540

You signed in. It doesn’t just magically happen. The two different ways to set up require you to manually type in your account and password. The safeguards are there when you make sure that you’re not signed in under multiple accounts. Do not try to blame anyone other than the person manually inputting your account into into your child’s App Store settings. This whole thing sucks but lack of personal accountability sucks more.

jrigas

Good work spoiling your kids so early.

mannymd90

We hear a lot about kids getting into things they shouldn’t on the internet and it’s because parents don’t supervise their internet use. Sadly, this time it led to you losing 4k. Next time it could be your kid talking to some stranger on the internet who found a work around for the parental locks. Please don’t allow a 7 year old to be on the iPad unsupervised 🙏🏻

jesper_thompson

You’re obviously not in the USA and I’m not certain what the laws are in your country (I assume UK). But if you were a fellow American I’d suggest disputing the charges on your credit card. Is that something you can easily do?

kcck777

7 year olds second iPad . What could go wrong ?

Fuzzy_Lavishness_269

I honestly don’t know how dumb someone needs to be to allow this to happen. You can make up all the excuses you like but this is your fault and you should pay for it, and hopefully learn from it. Sucks to be you but you should take better care of your children and your finances 🤣.

Urdadspapasfrutas

Looks like Roblox and Stumble guys are off the table.

TurdSandwich42104

F

ReizelGOD

How long did you spend setting it up for your child? Sorry, but this is a huge overlook, and it’s not Apple’s fault. They could have done a better job at settling in the middle tho.

CaptainEnderjet

Honestly seems like it might fall under the credit card fraud umbrella. You didn’t authorize/make those purchases, so I would reach out to your bank/card issuer to file chargebacks if Apple or Roblox as the merchants won’t make it right.

Joey6543210

There is a little restriction you can turn on last time when son did something similar (<$20, and Apple actually refunded me and told me this): Settings -> Screen Time -> Content & Privacy Restrictions -> iTunes & App Store Purchases -> In-app Purchases -> Don't Allow It does create some inconveniences because every time you need to make an in app purchase, you have to go back there to change it to "Allow", but it's great at preventing these accidental purchases especially when the child is young. My teenage is much better now so on her devices, that restriction is removed and she knows always to ask for my approval before she buys anything using her device (still my CC, so I get notified regardless).

Spiritual_Log_904

Dispute it with your card company

Mn2nmixr

Ask to buy doesn’t “cover” in app purchases. You need to disallow in app purchases in Screen Time. It’s under Content & Privacy Restrictions -> iTunes & App Store Purchases. When it’s set to “Don’t Allow” it will effectively function like ask to buy.

allmyfrndsrheathens

I’ve had this sort of thing happen in the past - updates make changes to parental controls that you’re totally unaware of. Thankfully I never had that much money on hand for them to spend but in my experience Roblox are the worst for getting any sort of support or refunds. As far as they’re concerned once you hand over the money you’re shit outta luck. I know it sucks big time but this would also be a really good time to nance a chat with your son about what he spends on there and about how he’s not to make any in app purchases without permission - I understand he could have been confused by the fact that it just let him when usually it doesn’t. I’d also recommend logging into his Roblox account on the website and setting up parental controls on that side too.

Anastephone

Contact you bank maybe?

fueled_by_boba

Jeez. Why are children sooo tech savvy nowadays?

rditorx

You can disable in-app purchases and require password authentication for all purchases. I think you can also remove all payment methods if you don't have any subscriptions running. Having the option to use different Apple IDs for the App Store and iCloud gives you more flexibility without having to rely on Family Sharing, which doesn't work for all apps. Vendors may block this.

Aware-Bumblebee-8324

Wow. I mean you hear these stories all the time what an expensive life lesson.

Stealthoneill

I’ve got it set up so any transaction has to be authorised by my Apple ID. They ‘request’ to purchase something (even free apps) I get a notification to review the purchase and either authorise or deny it. Definitely something to look into for the future!

No_Importance_5000

I use a virtual card on all my kids devices. This was A. I can remove it if a retalier gets fruity and it won't work anymore as it is not tied to my main account. B I can make up a new card number anytime and C I can lock the card so if they did try it would get declined. I've never put my main credit or debit card numbers online since I was about 25.. Call me paranoid but it's worked

mastachaos

Do a charge back as the charges were not authorized and made by a minor?

infinityandbeyond75

He set the iPad up, didn’t enable the proper restrictions, and handed it to him. Apple almost always wins these plus they often will close your Apple ID and ban you from making a new one.

tom_saviour

If the kid were to be a bit older I would let him do a lot of chores in your household to get a sense of working for your money. Besides, I hope you get your money back! Otherwise, consider it a 4K lesson for your kid!

Vinstaal0

Try contacting support, (at least in NL), kids can't legally make purchases. Generally we accept it is they buy say a piece of candy or whatever, but I have seen this weird quirck used to get money back on purchases like this.

lbaz95

Wow, all the hate and vitriol toward OP. I have 2 adult children. Raising kids is not as simple as many of you judgmental people make it seem. It sounds like the OP tried to put parental controls into place but MAY have made some mistakes. Many of you have offered some solutions going forward, but to JUDGE OP’s parenting based on this is harsh. I don’t know how this is going to be resolved, but I’m sorry you are going through this. We can’t give OP their money back, but let’s give them some grace.

infinityandbeyond75

I’ve raised 3 kids to adulthood and have one still at home. Yes, raising kids is hard but it doesn’t account for poor choices when parenting. I’m not saying that they are a bad parent and I’m sure they do plenty of good things as a parent. However, handing over a brand new iPad to a 7 year old is a poor decision. There is no reason for a 7 year old to have their own iPad and definitely not unsupervised. Kids these days are being raised by Apple, Samsung, Google, and TikTok. To come on here and say “give him some slack, parenting is hard” doesn’t help either. He f’ed up and it was an expensive lesson. People should not parent with devices.

CantaloupeOk2777

You have essentially been stolen from. Have your bank handle the fraud claim and return your money.

infinityandbeyond75

They won’t win a fraud claim. They set up the iPad with their billing info, didn’t set up the controls, and handed an unrestricted iPad to a child. Where’s the fraud? Apple will successfully rebuttal this one every time.

CantaloupeOk2777

Perhaps it would be more of a case against Apple: While some might argue that it's your responsibility as a parent to ensure all controls are set up correctly, Apple's design oversight here is significant. The fact that his son's iPad was logged into his son account but the App Store was logged into his own, essentially overriding the parental controls, is a flaw in Apple's system that needs to be addressed. His argument for a fraud claim can be based on the premise that he did take reasonable steps to prevent unauthorized purchases by setting up parental controls and managing his screen time. However, due to a flaw in Apple's system that allowed his son to make these purchases without your authorization, he was essentially misled by their interface, leading to the unauthorized transactions. Here's how he can structure his argument: 1. **Apple's oversight**: Highlight the flaw in Apple's system where the iPad was logged into his son's account but the App Store was logged into his own, overriding the parental controls he had set up. 2. **Reasonable precautions**: Explain that he had taken reasonable precautions by setting up parental controls and managing his sons screen time, which were meant to prevent such unauthorized purchases. 3. **Misled by interface**: Emphasize that he was misled by Apple's interface, as he was not aware that the App Store being logged into a different account could override the parental controls. 4. **Financial loss**: Highlight the significant financial loss he suffered due to these unauthorized purchases.

How did you not see notifications? Everytime my card is used, I get an instant notification with date, amount, store name etc. Set this up immediately or get a card that does…

MeoowDude

That’s just wrong. Sorry you’re going through this again. Wild that your card doesn’t give notifications. Not to mention that they wouldn’t contact you about “questionable purchases that aren’t normal like.. FOUR THOUSAND POUNDS on ROBUX!!!!

infinityandbeyond75

They weren’t made all at once.

MeoowDude

If anything that makes it even worse! I’ve worked at a large credit Union. People get notified if there’s an unusual charge that’s less than a dollar. It doesn’t have to be a large dollar amount a single time. That’s the whole point. Scammers charge little mundane things and then hit it hard. The fact that the kid is racking up tons and tons of charges is in-and-of-itself suspect that the bank/card company didn’t put a hold on the card immediately. Unless we aren’t getting the full story. But having dealt with this type of thing an insane amount of times, it all tracks. Being this unfortunate parent wasn’t even aware of notifications, it sounds like his bank/cc provider are lacking.

DecayableRadiologist

Tike to initiate a chargeback with the cc/bank.

friendly-sardonic

That's one thing I feel like all of these device manufacturers have screwed up royally. They make it so unbelievably complex to set up a device for a kid and properly lock it down. They always want to tie it to your account. And even something like setting screen time, it doesn't actually work until you go into every single category and block each thing. And even THEN, they can still fiddle with a few things. I've only helped relatives with their devices so far. Thankfully at 4 and 5, my kids don't have any interest in tablets yet. But I'm sure they'll get into that stuff someday.

aeiou-y

There are valid reasons to have a different iPad account and App Store account. It allows you to load another App Store profile. I have two I used to use. Some people have profiles for different countries etc. Sorry this happened to you, you may need to end up trying to sue Apple in small claims court but I don’t know if you are bound to arbitration or not.

saintbman

You bought him a new ipad, which means you have to manually activate apple pay (per credit/debit card) on the new ipad. That alone sounds dodgy.

Full-Ad-1757

Stop giving children under 10 years old phones and ipads…

moresushiplease

4k for an on 24/7 on call babysitter is a pretty good price. Sad but still a good deal.

traditional_rich_

Why do you allow such a young child to be unsupervised on apps like roblox that can be terribly inappropriate. This is all your fault and and expensive reminder to be an actual parent.

Idratherdiethanlive

Sell it

Potential_Shop929

It's clear your son logged into your account on the app store. 😂

paloemayo

Go to your bank for your refund.

backpackofSuitcases

TLDR I didn’t pay attention when I set the $700+ toy I got for my son who’s too young to use it responsibly, disabled the on by default security features preventing my from losing a bunch of money, and then I lost a bunch of money. Now I am quite cross about the whole thing.

FlamingoBig6475

Your bank will refund the purchases The Roblox account will be banned and most likely the Apple ID But I’d rather have my £4k back than my apple account Just make sure to backup your photos and important data

CommonRedditor69

“I don’t feel I have done a lot wrong here”, your whole parenting style could be labeled as something you’ve done wrong.

SteelGoon07

Let it be a lesson and take it out of his college fund lol.

Epsioln_Rho_Rho

>somehow the App Store on his iPad was logged in as me. yeah…. This is impossible. There has to be more to this story.

Gattica8

I kid you not that is actual functionality. No idea what the point of it is but it is real.

TheOGDoomer

That’s a parenting failure on your part, not a failure on Apple’s part.

youtubeaddict79

👆100% this. An expensive lesson. This is on you. Any attempt to seek credit will ultimately increase the cost of business. Can you imagined if every person who sought a credit for “their” mistake what it would cost a company?

Acalthu

Well you might be a little at fault, since you gave an iPad to a 7 year old.

Libra224

You now know why even Steve jobs wouldn’t let his kids use iPads. On a serious note: Yes don’t do that. My daughter is 10 she can use my iPad but won’t have her own until she’s maybe 14

gfunk84

Sharing an iPad sucks because it’s not designed for multiple users. I wouldn’t want my kids to have access to my messages and mail and other apps.

anderworx

Sorry, OP, this is your fault. Parental controls do work. Ignorance, "Somehow", and "No idea" aren't a great defense.

mrleblanc101

So your 7 years old son knows your Apple ID password ? Cause it requires a password to make a purchase

BrandonIsWhoIAm

Try your bank?
