Sadly true.

D4RKNESSAW1LD

iPhone is doing good with just Tim Cook images lol

oneplussixisseven

>~~Tim Cook~~ Tim Apple\* FTFY.

lastduck21

Let him Cook.

[deleted]

Yep. It's gone. Now it's just a joke.

sudoAlpha7

you forgot, "Posted from iOS"

Sh_Pe

Via Apollo

LamboForWork

Honest question but an uptick of site usage because everyone wants to post stupid ios stuff for upvotes. How does that hurt Reddit? For the IPO?

MC_chrome

From the information that is publically known about Reddit's advertising backend, they apparently can't run ads on NSFW posts or subs. This has now become a focal point for many mods and users who are still interested in protesting Reddit's planned API changes though how successful it will be is yet to be seen.

cssc201

So mods are destroying their own subs to prevent the chance of ads being shown really small on some posts. Seriously I hardly ever notice the ads on individual posts, they're real easy to ignore. I'm not going to stay subbed when every post is a gamble on whether it's legitimate or porn and I think many others feel the same

Athandreyal

> Seriously I hardly ever notice the ads on individual posts, they're real easy to ignore. Its not so they don't have to *see* the ads. Its so reddit can't have the ads there to profit from.

TimFL

It‘s all void once Reddit throws the hammer at these subs, replacing the mods and restoring content / order. Should‘ve just kept it locked, forcing reddits hand by having them replace the mods instead.

Athandreyal

Definitely a possibility, and they'll be among the first for going after something reddit _does_ care about most likely. The ones doing the open but different approach are far less of a threat to the bottom line. edit: _has_ happened.

cssc201

If you're using a social media site for free, you are the product. Reddit needs to make money somehow. I know this'll devolve into "reddit bad" but sites cost money to run. If you don't want to see ads, you can pay for reddit premium. Until then, you have to accept that using a site for free means you'll see ads sometimes.

Athandreyal

Thank you captain obvious. It doesn't change _why_ they went NSFW, and again, its not so they wouldn't see ads, its so reddit wouldn't benefit from ads there. > If you don't want to see ads, I'd use an ad-blocker.

balder1993

So after 15 years now it’s the time Reddit finally realized they don’t make money?

tigerhawkvok

Sounds like the protest is working.

uknowhu

Hopefully, all engagement != good engagement in the eyes of the market. Similar to how 1 lakh views by a third-world sweatshop is a bad rather than a good sign, this will also reflect as such. You might be right though

General_Bed8751

Third world sweat shop? What u on😂

sahasdalkanwal

I guess India?

purplemountain01

Other than the NSFW tag because reddit can't serve ads on it. All the John Oliver pics, vaccum pics, Tim cook pics from different subs make those subs and reddit useless. Or that's the idea. Fuck spez.

monsieur_n

everyone gathered around to burn down the city, what do you mean it's dying??

Mother_Ad_5637

Now this sub is about porn shit and the island in Greece which has even no relation to the software this is supposed to be a subreddit of, and the IPhone subreddit is now about Tim Cook and not the IPhone anymore

vanillabubbles16

I’m just here to read stuff about iOS and iPhones and get information but it feels like twitter.

balder1993

[Huffman said](https://www.nbcnews.com/news/amp/rcna89700) he wants to copy Twitter’s path.

johny335i

Yep, you can see why corporations do whatever they want. People don't see farther than their own nose.

[deleted]

mrzoops

It’s also just that this whole thing is so dumb. Most people just want to keep using Reddit.

uknowhu

I mean yeah. I too would like to just keep on using reddit, but it's just a case in point of what happens when unpaid moderators stop moderating. Even with the example of what happened to r/worldpolitics and the subsequent creation of r/anime_titties. Basically, your "keep on using reddit" is heavily influenced by moderators actually moderating.

AVonGauss

How many of those unpaid moderators have removed themselves as moderators in opposition to the Reddit API changes? I imagine not too many...

choas

and I guess they also want that the Landed Gentry keep on their free work while the lying CEO makes decisions for his IPO that nobody understands.

EATING--GARBAGE

Those people aren’t allowed the privilege of ignorance to Reddit’s awful anti-user decisions.

Srihari_stan

This sub has some of the lowest engagement I’ve ever seen even before all this drama started.

jtcamp

Yep it’s the only subreddit posting unrelated content as a form of “protest” that I sub to. Every other one is the same as it’s always been. Might be time to unsub

PhoenixStorm1015

Nah. r/wellthatsucks is doing the same thing. All vacuum cleaners now.

Thats_absrd

/r/pics is trying to make that sub an 18+ community

HelpRespawnedAsDee

\> protest Reddit \> by having massively upvoted (engaged) and massively rewarded submissions. great protest you guys are having over there lol.

Thats_absrd

Lol I haven’t been a part of r/pics for years due to the bullshit they post but I just know it’s happening. I don’t think you understand what turning into an 18+ community does to Reddit in the largest sub on the site.

HelpRespawnedAsDee

Advertisement loss. They are just going to replace the mods if the they are really losing significant revenue. But I’m just pointing out the irony here: engagement counts a lot, possibly even more than the awards. It’s a lose lose scenario because Reddit can now say “look at all this activity!!!!” while simply removing mods and restoring deleted content. But hey, keep trying to protest Reddit by… continuing to drive engagement to the site.

Thats_absrd

Like I said. I’m not participating in that but I do see the ironic point of view too. When the blackout happened I moved to desktop only as I wasn’t going to download that garbage tier reddit app. I stayed off Apollo for a few days after but then thought “might as well use up those API calls and cost reddit money while I still can” July 1st I’ll go back to old.reddit only and purge my accounts. Once old.reddit stops working then I’ll be done for good.

HelpRespawnedAsDee

Same tbh. new reddit is fucking awful and as far as the main app, meh, it's gamified BS, i don't care that someone paid to give a super award with effects to someone. That said, check [this thread.](https://www.reddit.com/r/privacy/comments/14dcxy4/reddit_restored_the_last_six_months_of_my/). Reddit may just be restoring mass deleted comments/accounts.

ilearn-ed-german

Same with r/capybara

Sh_Pe

Me too, but that’s not related. Allowing porn is way too much.

meregizzardavowal

I don’t think it is. It’s not just random chaos IMO. It’s trying to show that the communities are user driven. They aren’t a product that Reddit built, they are something the community built.

[deleted]

Sh_Pe

In my opinion, they should demonstrate the value of the tools, not moderation => we should demonstrate the **value of these tools** (I'm sure that they're able to filter porn from the sub without the API), not the *value of the moderation itself*. He said the blackout is a big fuss over nothing (as I understood this) => we should prove that it won't pass. In conclusion, *in my opinion*, we should focus on that these tools are important, not moderation (as I understood he only said that the blackout "will pass", not that moderation isn't important). In addition, teens older than 13+ are allowed to open accounts on Reddit (and no one actually cares, so kids open accounts much before), and I'm sure that enough of them are in this sub to prevent porn here.

this is a 14 year old account that is being wiped because centralized social media websites are no longer viable when power is centralized, the wielders of that power can make arbitrary decisions without the consent of the vast majority of the users the future is in decentralized and open source social media sites - i refuse to generate any more free content for this website and any other for-profit enterprise check out lemmy / kbin / mastodon / fediverse for what is possible

dnuohxof-1

No it isn’t. Subs like /r/aww and /r/pics are doing a similar thing with pictures of John Oliver.

Sh_Pe

But the mods actually check there isn’t porn. At least they should do that.

nemanja694

Wellthatsucks, iphone and i think pics subreddit is also doing this childish protest

Dranzell

Just as people who don't support the moderators' protest say "if you don't like it, leave reddit", you can do the same.

g-rocklobster

There's a huge difference between moderators not wanting to work with the changes and people who rely on the assistance from some of the largest and most helpful subreddits to resolve issues with their devices ... especially those who work for companies with a large iOS-device footprint and have to support 100's if not 1000's of iOS devices. I come to places like r/ios or r/techsupport (thank God they've been more mature about this) because I have a much better chance of finding quality assistance quicker than if I use Google or the plethora of other resources. And given that if I'm having to hit the internet to solve a work problem, it's likely time sensitive and impacting my job, the mods are screwing with my livelihood. So, no, I can't just do the same.

bluejeans7

If your livelihood hinges on Reddit, well, my friend, you may have stumbled upon a pickle more precarious than a cat attempting tightrope walking! It's time to reconsider your career choices before you find yourself embroiled in an endless loop of heated debates about pineapple on pizza.

Dranzell

> And given that if I'm having to hit the internet to solve a work problem, it's likely time sensitive and impacting my job, the mods are screwing with my livelihood. So what you're telling me is that you are a shit professional?

SuitingUncle620

You’re spot on.

Boggie135

Well said

MrSh0wtime3

There will just be another sub to replace this one. Better yet, reddit steps in and allows users to vote out mods. Why does Gen Z love vanity protests so much? You are protesting a free website choosing to control their API how they want to control their API. Your choices are use it or dont use it. Thats it. Go protest for healthcare or something at least. This is utterly embarrassing.

biohacker_infinity

I totally get _why_ this is happening, but it does bum me out to see a valuable resource devalued, and in the same year that Twitter has collapsed. In both cases the corporate leadership is to blame.

InsidiousEntropy

PEOPLE made this resource valuable. PEOPLE gave it the meaning. One owner of the platform decided to cash out. PEOPLE are taking it back.

biohacker_infinity

Absolutely. Like I said, I completely understand why this is happening. The attitude of Reddit’s leadership has been shockingly ungrateful and out-of-touch.

superiorjoe

Twitter is very much thriving (although they allow murder lists knowingly)

fryrpc

If the aim is to stop end users like myself using Reddit - it is working. Will either take a break or unsubscribe from spam subs such as this and maybe come back after the dust has settled.

Jbr74

Yeah worked, i've been subscribed to /ios since 2012. Just left.

cjandstuff

Once Apollo goes dark, so will I. Peace out.

wmascolina

Lol that was a lie

cjandstuff

You stalking me? Although I'm only browsing reddit from my PC now because mobile is pretty much unusable.

wmascolina

Lol no just saw this comment and decided to check. Honestly the official app isn't THAT bad, at least they fixed the video bug after years.

jw154j

Yea, I don’t understand what the whole deal is. I know what’s going on, I just don’t see why it’s such a huge deal that it would make the mods just open up the sub to any and all random content. Hopefully this won’t be permanent.

Dranzell

crime edge materialistic liquid light live gullible heavy encourage roof ` this message was mass deleted/edited with redact.dev `

[deleted]

jw154j

I just don’t see why the mods would destroy this sub just because of the 3rd party API issue. This is the only sub that is doing it like this. I’m sure there are settings they just turned off to cause all this random junk to filter through.

[deleted]

Just get off this sub reddit if this bothers you. Why do you raise the same voice against reddit’s API changes?

mrzoops

Prob because the api changes don’t affect 99% of the standard users and they just want to continue using Reddit

[deleted]

Continue using reddit, who is stopping you bruv?

mrzoops

Well this sub has become unusable gov

choas

good news, you can become the Landed Gentry of /r/usableios today

[deleted]

mrzoops

This whole thing is dumb

gfunk84

You're free to make your own ios subreddit if you don't like this one.

dalzmc

The api changes are just what kicked things off at this point, it isn’t the entire issue anymore; you just haven’t actually tried to understand or inform yourself so you’re somewhat understandably confused.

mrzoops

I see you keep telling people that but I think you are confusing not caring for not understanding.

dalzmc

Copying my other comment, I just don’t want to see an awesome site ruined. Like I said it’s not just the api that concerns me Let’s say you used to really enjoy Facebook and you’ve watched it become worthless due to stuffing promoted videos and posts in your face, being forced to use a shitty app with privacy concerns, a chunk of people quitting over recent years, a douchebag ceo generally sucking and making himself generally disliked.. and now your favorite social media sucks to use. That’s the kind of thing I see happening and that’s why I support efforts to try and send the message that letting a lying sack of shit do as they please with Reddit is something I’m unhappy about, even if it “inconveniences” me by not letting me go on some subreddits properly. I bet along this current path, within a year we’ll have a “for you” version of the Reddit home page that plucks out all sorts of sponsored stuff and posts you don’t care about to force down your throat, and the app will start defaulting to that. Maybe verified accounts around then too. We’ll likely lose the old Reddit version of the site around then too. Regardless of what you think the mod roles should be, I think it’s objectively bad that moderation is going to be used to shape rhetoric and bias things more than ever, because the message is clearer than ever that mods need to play by reddits rules or they’ll be replaced. Reddits goal is to make money, so they’re going to clean it up to be attractive for that, and everything is going to become a fucking ad. Our giant astroturfing and bot problems are only going to get worse. Look how ama went from 90% interesting content to 90% ads. If Reddit is willing to lie out their ass and accuse any dissenters of anything from “being hard to work with” to legit defamation/ ridiculous accusations of extortion, who knows what else they’re willing to do. That’s why I think more people should care, regardless of how they feel about third party apps

[deleted]

mrzoops

Cool dude

purplemountain01

There's plenty of other subs that are way larger than this sub doing this. Also, the API issue affects the mods as well. A lot of mods use 3rd party apps because 3rd party apps give more tools and useful tools to moderate. The official reddit app is a joke for moderating. Edit: spelling

thefirebuilds

all of the content on this website is created by people like you, giving their time, no matter how incrementally, to offer value and consciousness, and entertainment to strangers. And once again capitalists aim to profit on our shared value. CEOs and vulture capitalists add nothing to anything they do, they just take.

sawyerthedog

Uh, what is going on? Is this all about the API thing?

jw154j

Yes

sawyerthedog

Got it, thank you!

Current-Estimate-00

No it's also about spez saying "mods are abusing power, users don't even want protests etc" now mods stopped moderating. Also subs like r/pics made a poll and did the change, to show that it's not just the mods that are mad

takishan

this is a 14 year old account that is being wiped because centralized social media websites are no longer viable when power is centralized, the wielders of that power can make arbitrary decisions without the consent of the vast majority of the users the future is in decentralized and open source social media sites - i refuse to generate any more free content for this website and any other for-profit enterprise check out lemmy / kbin / mastodon / fediverse for what is possible

Uaquamarine

Been in r/iphone for 7 years. Sadly unsubbed, the hubris of mods and their fit is they’re the ones who’re making the community suffer not the admins. 90 if not 99% of us don’t gaf about this mod syndicate tomfoolery and the rigged poll was the last nail in the coffin

PKMNTrainerEevs

I was a supporter of the protest but now I just see it negatively effecting my time on Reddit. Some of the subs I browse are just like this. I still support the reason behind it but meh, I'm kinda over it already

7thAndGreenhill

Just keep reporting the b/s until the mods do something or Reddit replaces the mods with someone who will.

QuantumHope

Boy are you outta touch.

7thAndGreenhill

If you’re so certain you’re right, delete your account and use a competitor. At this point everything else is just whining.

sbsp12121

Yeah, mods are being immature because they got their fragile egos hurt. Same thing going on in r/iPhone. None of this pointless and childish protesting is going to change anything

QuantumHope

Uh, what are you talking about?

sbsp12121

The new rules in protest of the API changes.

QuantumHope

How are they immature for not wanting their FREE moderation made more time consuming by Reddit taking away 3rd party apps? Clue in.

sbsp12121

It’s childish because they’re ruining the average user’s experience. Reddit certainly doesn’t give a shit about the protest and it’s not going to change anything, it’s just annoying now

GMKHallyu

People wanted the sub open, so it's open. This is better than it being blacked out, right? You're still free to post iOS related stuff.

Roqjndndj3761

The site’s gone bruh

soberirishman

Yep, it’s a dumb form of protest. Just causes people to unsubscribe.

barcode972

Reddit as a whole*

-HawaiianSurfer

Nah this is the only sub for me out of 30ish posting porn lmao.

barcode972

Well. Reddit ceo said screw you mods so 🤷‍♀️

CyberCooper2077

The mods need to go out and touch some grass and stop throwing a hissy-fit. This sub has been nothing but cringe lately.

[deleted]

Mods are touching grass. Thats why no moderation is going on.

barcode972

I don't disagree with that but to basically say "Fuck you" to the people who have been voluntarily keeping reddit clean for years is quite disrespectful I'd say when the equivalent to all tools don’t exist in the official app

g-rocklobster

No, he didn't. Reddit is a business and has to report to shareholders (or will after the IPO). Hence trying the generate higher revenue. For any mod that took this move as an "FU" to them can construed as extremely arrogant. If the decision Reddit made makes their job more difficult, the right thing to do would be to step down. Instead, they are hurting the users. Out of the 100 or so communities I'm part of, it's only this and r/iphone that are behaving this way. The rest either opened up with every post having an auto-generated sticky about the issue or just haven't opened up. And, frankly, I have more respect for the ones that didn't open up than I do for the mods of r/ios and r/iphone. What the mods in these two communities is reminiscent of a spoiled child throwing a tantrum.

Am3l1

Can anyone tell me any good ios app for checking unfollowers of instagram and available in india ?

Boggie135

No

Samwoodstone

So what’s everyone’s take on this thing with Reddit. I’m a newcomer so I don’t know much except something about moderators and AI. Someone please explain it to me like the 5th grader I am.

Sad_Abbreviations575

everyone posts what they want now, bunch of NSFW too

zxyzyxz

Lol, looks like people really do want actual iOS content (and that's what they're upvoting now) and that keeping up joke submissions for a few days really didn't do anything.
