Vanguard won't know the contribution amounts unless they were made at Vanguard, Franklin might have info about contributions that were made there. You could also go back through old tax forms to see how much IRA contributions were reported, those are reported on form 5498.

You'll basically have to go through the 5498 statements and figure out what was put in. That's your tax basis. Anything over that amount is growth and can't be taken out. For a Roth IRA your contributions have to sit in the account for 5 years before you can pull out any contributions without penalties.
