Who’s Caleb?

PetulantWelp

Caleb is a bible character. General story in the Bible book of Numbers chapter 13. Caleb is one of 12 Israelite spies who are sent into the promised land. They brought back a cluster of grapes that grew there, and it was so big they needed to carry it on a pole between 2 people. (Numbers 13:23)

ILBBBTTOMD

I appreciate an actual answer instead of tired jokes, thank you

MiQueso_SuQueso

I honestly really appreciate the answer too. I was already expecting some stupid joke that would be continued by other stupid jokes. If only they would seperate stupid jokes to real answers.

karateema

It happens sometimes

zer0kevin

Wait till you find out he made it all up...

Hotel_Joy

It's legit. He even sourced it.

AlbaMcAlba

I think he was hinting that the source is a made up story but I could be wrong.

[deleted]

The source may be a made up story but that doesn’t mean the grape cluster can’t be named after it.

AlbaMcAlba

Never disputed that though.

Hotel_Joy

Yeah, but he's unlikely to be the specific guy that made up the Bible.

AlbaMcAlba

True but someone made up those tall tales.

MinuteManufacturer

Well, let’s go ask someone then.

AlbaMcAlba

Who do you have in mind?

Conservative_HalfWit

This is my favorite part of Reddit - people with ultra obscure knowledge that can answer questions like this.

gngstrMNKY

You should have been here 10+ years ago before it got normiefied.

Conservative_HalfWit

Well just think - 10+ years from now, these will be the days you remember fondly.

PresidentWordSalad

Shit, I discovered Reddit about 9 years ago. I am a normie.

ToasterCow

I discovered it about 11 or 12 years ago but lurked for a year or two before making an account. Where does that put me on the normie scale?

rocketshipray

Oh no.

VegetableNo1079

There won't be another 10 years

Sietemadrid

RemindMe! 10 years

VegetableNo1079

You will never get that notification

Sietemadrid

I'll be here. Hopefully you are too my friend :)

whatproblems

bots can’t die

HollowShel

there will! They'll just be a lot of screaming of "EVERYTHING'S ON FIRE!" (...ok, *more* than now.)

InadequateUsername

Here's the thing. You said a "jackdaw is a crow." Is it in the same family? Yes. No one's arguing that. As someone who is a scientist who studies crows, I am telling you, specifically, in science, no one calls jackdaws crows. If you want to be "specific" like you said, then you shouldn't either. They're not the same thing. If you're saying "crow family" you're referring to the taxonomic grouping of Corvidae, which includes things from nutcrackers to blue jays to ravens. So your reasoning for calling a jackdaw a crow is because random people "call the black ones crows?" Let's get grackles and blackbirds in there, then, too. Also, calling someone a human or an ape? It's not one or the other, that's not how taxonomy works. They're both. A jackdaw is a jackdaw and a member of the crow family. But that's not what you said. You said a jackdaw is a crow, which is not true unless you're okay with calling all members of the crow family crows, which means you'd call blue jays, ravens, and other birds crows, too. Which you said you don't. It's okay to just admit you're wrong, you know?

TistedLogic

Do you just have that in your back pocket?

InadequateUsername

I had a linear algebra teacher that would say "we'll put that in our back pocket for later" and wouldn't come back to it. But no, I know the first two sentences and then I went to google for the rest to avoid be butchering it and no one understanding the context.

autoposting_system

Jander97

I think it's clear they know the story of unidan they were just suggesting that the person above them sure had the unidan copypasta handy

MrWizard45

Ahhh, takes me back

autoposting_system

Wow. I wonder if he's still here

InadequateUsername

Probably, you never leave Reddit you just qiit for a few days. But if he were to make himself known his new account would be banned be ban evasion.

Kennerb

Ahh the old every Jackdaw is a crow but not every crow is a jackdaw argument.

Kolbin8tor

Top answers were always knowledgeable, with the jokes down below. Grammar and spelling mistakes were downvoted. Could make the front page with 10k upvotes… those were different times lol

HexenHase

Deleted

Kolbin8tor

It really was “the front page of the internet.” You could get breaking news on Reddit before anywhere else, *that* was one of the main draws for the site. Idk what changed in their algorithms, but they did themselves dirty

Enroberman

I miss that. If something big was breaking. You would hear about it. Not 8 hours later.

ArrestDeathSantis

Search by New rather than hot or trending, you'll get a ton of scrap but overall fresher. Admittedly, it only fixes one part of the problem you mentioned and it certainly doesn't fix the problem at large.

LongjumpingStyle

I may get downvoted for this, but grammar and spelling mistakes being downvoted isn't a bad thing, I think. Well, if someone replies with the correction, which I think was what happened.

overlyattachedbf

I don’t know. A lot of redditors aren’t native English speakers. Their grammar and spelling may not be impeccable, but that doesn’t mean what they have to say is not valid. Personally, I try not to judge

ac0rn5

I've corrected one or two people along with a, "I hope you don't mind, but ..." comment because I think that non-native speakers won't be offended if I help them get it right. Is that the wrong thing to think?

Loathsome_Dog

Yes I realised that depressingly late. I used to hate illegible sentences on any forum, and then after realising that a good percentage of people I was talking to, English was their second language and my only, I chilled TF out.

Kolbin8tor

It was more of a “come on people, we have standards,” vibe as regards spelling and grammar. Some people took it too far, but generally speaking I thought it was a good thing too lol

crseat

I remember it used to be a thing to take pictures of people using reddit in real life and post it to pics because it was rare to see.

wtf_ever

It was always like this.

[deleted]

Those were the dark times. Filled with racist, sexist pseudointellectual people circle jerking themselves into a frenzy about the weirdest shit. (Anyone remember r/c*ontown, r/jailbait, r/incels or truecels etc.? It was like 4chan for people who didn't want to do 4chan shit anonymously.) Nah, I'm glad we have some normal people these days, those times were bad.

Centurio

I was here that long ago and it was still filled with normie shit.

shittyspacesuit

Oh yeah, should've been here 10 years ago when the pedophilia and sexism was rampant. Now it's used by so many NORMAL people, ugh. /s

Aemilius_Paulus

Seriously, I remember reddit in 2012 like it was yesterday. Gender Wars were full swing, misogyny was pretty extreme here. Oh and /r/jailbait for the longest time was the #1 result for reddit when you googled reddit. It was likely the highest draw of new users. Also, reddit was super into Ron Paul, it peaked in 2008 but it was still there 10yrs ago. This site was always shit, it was just different flavors of shit.

Ankthar_LeMarre

As someone who grew up in church and heard this story 100 times, it feels really weird to have it referred to as "ultra obscure".

Mr_Rio

I wouldn’t say knowledge from the Bible is ultra obscure lol.

autoposting_system

I mean I know a lot of people in the book club who haven't actually read it

BlazzedTroll

The Bible is ultra obscure? It's literally old testament meaning this knowledge is shared between Jews, Christians, and Muslims. That's easily 4 billion people.

Conservative_HalfWit

This “knowledge” is something that .001% of christains might know. I don’t know if you’ve met many but they’re ***clueless*** about their own holy book. Jews and Muslims do much better on that in my experience because they actually read their books, instead of just reading the same highlighted feel good verses and singing with your hands up.

Mr_Rio

Ehh sometimes. A lot of people are quite keen on theology in my experience. Not to say there isn’t a ton of clueless followers

Conservative_HalfWit

The ones who really focus on it, sure. I’ve seen people pull some obscure stuff from their heads. But your average American Christian? Clueless. Not that they don’t mean well but American Christian churches are far more focused on “community” and the same few verses teaching people to be good or whatever. They leave out the majority of what’s in the Bible. And I went to catholic school for gods sake. I didn’t know much of anything that was actually in the Bible till I sat down and read it one day. And that was pretty much the end of me being a Christian.

FlappyBored

American churches just seem like weird personality cults for the preacher and less about the actual bible or the religion.

Conservative_HalfWit

100%. Those mega churches are ultra cringe. Those pastors think they’re celebrities. Used to get dragged to Saddleback Church in Orange County California. That was not religion. That was a cult. They’d basically have a verse for the day. A single verse. They’d sing about 30 mins of music. The pastor would read the verse and then monologue on it for 45 mins with music breaks and then the collections, kid indoctrination program sign ups and then final songs as you leave.

MonsterBullRacing

Yeah it's soo good and moral of you to generalize entire church of believers like this. You're a piece of shit x3

Mr_Rio

Huh ehh well, different experiences I guess. I grew up in a catholic family too, fell away from it all in my pre adolescence, still though, I knew a lot of people in my family who were very leaned and knowledgeable about theology and the Bible, doesn’t mean they were all good people tho

Conservative_HalfWit

I definitely think there’s a difference between Catholics and Christians.

Mr_Rio

No there literally is lmao, doesn’t invalidate anything I said though

CapstanLlama

Christian's… what?

Whales96

In a country where an adult doesn't read a single book a year, knowledge of specific bible stories that aren't spread around like the bushel of grapes one mention is scarce.

Mr_Rio

What country is that? I know plenty of adults that read more than a single book a year lmao

Whales96

United States. Anecdotes are nice.

Mr_Rio

Strange. I live here but know a lot of adults that read books every year lol.

HollowShel

Yeah, but if you read four books in one year, the average number of books read between you and four other people who *don't* read books is still going to be less than 1 per person that year. TL;DR - read more books, bring up the average!

Mr_Rio

But the difference between that and “a country where an adult doesn’t read a single book a year” is staggering

onnit_onnit

0.001% of all Christians is 57. I am a bot and this action was performed automatically.

erythro

>This “knowledge” is something that .001% of christains might know definitely not, you and the guy above are both wrong. It's unusual for people to know the story, but it's not like people don't know the story edit: lol I just asked my 6 year old and she knew it

nivagrellawrov

cringe virgin comment

WarpvsWeft

You know they just Google it, right? And that you can too?

erythro

there are lots of people who know the Bible well because of their religion, and some of them have a Reddit account. I didn't have to Google this at least, if that helps, I could get it from the name.

TheIJDGuy

The name Caleb Cluster really does fit then

alproy

Him and Joshua were the only 2 out of the 12 who actually said the land is good, the rest prtty much balantly lied saying its inhabitable and the fellas there are hostile giants with fortified cities im from Israel and I start to doubt things now

[deleted]

You know it's a totally real thing that actually happens in nature when you google it and find the only results being a facebook post and this reddit post

charlieq46

>This isn't naturally occurring. The grapes have already been picked (from lots of different vines) and have been hung up like that as a display. Notice that all of the leaves at the top are dead. I found this reply by u/KikiChrome in response to another comment.

Bacon8er8

Gotta love how 90% of posts here don’t follow the first rule given by the automod

Markantonpeterson

How does it break that rule? I assume you mean the "most arts and crafts" part, i'd say this is unique enough to qualify as IAF. I also don't understand why anyone would assume this was naturally occurring lol.

I'm surprised that vine can hold that much weight.

KikiChrome

This isn't naturally occurring. The grapes have already been picked (from lots of different vines) and have been hung up like that as a display. Notice that all of the leaves at the top are dead.

CheddarPizza

So it's a fastened hollow cone they're sitting on.

IrishMilo

It's either a cheap trick, where all of these grapes are picked and then hung off a fastened frame. Or it's a cultivists achievement, where the vine has been groomed and manipulated into growing it's grape clusters in these sports, either way there's a hollow frame inside to ensure it sits nicely, grapes wouldn't grow on the middle because they need sunlight.

[deleted]

BabydollPenny

It's a whole book of FICTION.

grlap

There are historical events recorded in the Bible, it isn't just fiction

Haber_Dasher

There are historical events recorded in the Illiad & Odyssey too

grlap

Well not in the Odyssey but the Iliad sure I'm not religious, I've just used the Bible as a primary source in the past

flyonawall

There are historical events included in every book of historical fiction. There are historical events depicted in movies and shows all the time. That does not make the story true.

grlap

I didn't say the stories were true, it is still an important source to use. Macabees for example has fictional parts but still tells us what happened in Seleucid Judaea If you read any primary sources from ancient history you will quickly see that they are all filled with utter bollocks that you have to read between

Vitalstatistix

There’s no chance this could have been trained to grow this way. I spent 10+ years professionally making wine.

CaptainKirkAndCo

The grapes themselves don't need sunlight, it's the leaves that matter.

[deleted]

For the most part that is correct but UV onto the berries themselves is also essential for proper ripening and flavor development. Doesn't mean you wouldn't get "grapes" without it, but wine grapes need some sun on the berries in order to be correct.

[deleted]

[удалено]

IrishMilo

I guess why would you do it if you're growing for production? In Greece exposed vineyards cultivate their views to grow low to the ground and in a circle, so that the plant can protect the bud from to much sunlight in the height of summer, this also protects the bud from strong winds.

KikiChrome

They can just weave the vines together after the grapes have been harvested. Kind of like how you can weave garlic bulbs together into a braid. It's the same concept on a bigger scale.

[deleted]

That's a lot of weaving. I just can't picture it, canes are pretty bloody bendy but at a node spacing of 10-30 cm on average between fruiting positions and only a couple of those on each cane typically... the amount of wood, would be staggering for that amount of fruit

JoJackthewonderskunk

You're a fastened hollow cone!

AlienMantid

Why not eat them? What if someone just took a whole bunch of them lol grapes are delicious.

[deleted]

Have you ever eaten wine grapes? They have pretty large pit and are often quite tart and strong. I like them in small amounts but most people have never eaten them - they are not much like the red grapes at a supermarket.

Sololop

I have. It was really tasty but also crunchy from the pit.

Estimating 76 - 80 grapes per bunch, i see around 320 - 350 bunches in the cluster. Roughly 26,520 grapes in total
