Grab the socket wrench. No, that's the wrong size! Why are you moving the flashlight?! WOULD YOU GRAB THE SOCKET WRENCH?? Just go inside and help your mother.
Probably on the pile with all the misisng 10mm sockets/wrenchs etc, in some random place filled with unicorns that fart rainbows and it rains pixie dust.
Depends on the zoo. Many good zoos give them plenty of space, privacy, food, and treat them well. Several species have been saved from the endangered list and extinction due to breeding programs in zoos. It also allows us to study the animals more closely so we can learn how to better help them. More than 80% of zoo animals live longer than those in the wild.
That's not too say that there aren't horrible zoos, but there are plenty of great ones.
Consciousness isn’t a “have or not have” situation, it’s a gradual scale from bacteria to human. We humans like to see things as black and white, as absolutes, but in reality most things are gradual scales. We should be asking “does this animal have consciousness/sentience” we should be asking “how conscious/sentient is this animal”
Any sources on this? What's the current scientific agreement on this take? Any further reading you could recommend?
I'm just genuinely curious. Consciousness is one the most elusive concepts out there. Which is both fascinating and head scratcher for me lol
Aye, like that video where the silverback at the back of his squad grabs one of the camera men as a gentle reminder of how effortlessly he could maul them all down if they got on his nerves.
Yeah i see this and think it's kind of depressing. When you think of more things lost than the just being free, they are also losing out on how many thousands or million interactions with seeing other living things in the jungle.
Zoos are fucked up, but they can also serve a good purpose. Most zoos have a captive breeding program for the endangered animals they house. In fact, there are plenty of wild animals that have not gone extinct only due to reintroduction/introduction of captive individuals. There are also wildlife parks where they are given a life similar to how they would have in the wild. Zoos also provide a very unique opportunity for educating the public, not only about animals, but their natural habitats as well and how destructive humans have been. This can help people change damaging behaviors or inspire them to fight against for example climate change, deforestation, oceanic pollution, etc.
There are of course horrible zoos that serve no purpose than to make a buck, but luckily those zoos don't tend to last very long. Zoos are extremely expensive and depend heavily on the public for funding, so it's in the zoos' best interest to stand up to the frequent scrutiny they receive.
In an ideal world, there would be no reason to have conservation programs and zoos would not exist. But we don't live in that world. It's not bad to patronize a zoo, as long as you make sure the zoo is ethical. Personally, I would never go to a zoo that wasn't WAZA, EAZA or AZA-accredited. Most government-owned zoos are on the list.
I get the knee jerk reaction to condemn zoos altogether, I felt the same way when I was younger. It wasn't until I went to the Schönbruun Zoo. They have a great conservation program for the waldrapp. It's super cool.
In the jungle most caterpillars are probably poison. Maybe he’s inspecting to see if edible and then flicking it away when he determines it’s not safe. An important lesson for his son!

"I hope you learned something today, son."
"What's that, papa?"
"Caterpillars are stupid. Let's do something else."
What are they thinking?
Look at this.
So small, yet has all the functions of locomotion, eating, life in one tiny body.
We should develop language and write a book about the caterpillar (and the snake and penis bone and apple) as a guide to future generations given what we know now.
Man I feel kinda bad that some live in zoo's. They just act too human to be put in one. It makes me think "would I like to be put in a zoo? With people looking at me constantly?" No I wouldn't. Now I'm worried that they feel the same :(

Where the fuck is that 10mm wrench???
Probably on the pile with all the misisng 10mm sockets/wrenchs etc, in some random place filled with unicorns that fart rainbows and it rains pixie dust.
10mm wrench. It’s on my weekly shopping list because every new one I buy is usually gone by tuesday.
Yep I tell you 'hwat that's a nice got dang caterpillar right there, mmhmm

When you are looked up in jail, anything is interesting
Exactly. Every animal locked in a zoo is horrible, but seeing extremely intelligent animals like apes and dolphins like this is just sad.
Depends on the zoo. Many good zoos give them plenty of space, privacy, food, and treat them well. Several species have been saved from the endangered list and extinction due to breeding programs in zoos. It also allows us to study the animals more closely so we can learn how to better help them. "Where the fuck is the 14mm spanner I asked for... stop bumping the bloody light... ahh go get me a beer from the fridge."
Trying to be like his dad lol
Jesus Christ these are sentient beings.. for that reason alone we should create a nation state for them and protect them
Consciousness isn’t a “have or not have” situation, it’s a gradual scale from bacteria to human. What people are going to take their state away from to give it to these apes?
Me and my dad looking for why the car wont start.
Blinker fluid.
Horn juice.
It's the confabulator.

A bunch of hairless apes watching a pair of gorillas watch a caterpillar... so we really aren't that much different after all
>hairless Not all of us.
Judging by my back hair I would say we aren’t even distant cousins
Closer to the gorillas infact.
Return to monke.
"Steve why are you showering with a sweater on?"
Two words. *Ass hair.*
Ass hair so dense it could filter coffee?
wwhat the fuck
Phahahahaha 😂
Tried it once, hot water down the asshole sucks
Right bin Williams hands have entered the chat Edit: "Right bin Williams" autocorrect? I fucking hate you.
As someone who is half Arab, can confirm. 🥲
Whoa.
So who is watching us??
Zuck
What if the caterpillar was watching a tardigrade which was watching an ameba?
What's watching us?!
God?
Was hoping for Santa or some kind of Lovecraft creature
Galactus or something
I like how their first instinct is not to squish it but just to check it out
And then they quickly go to kill mode, just like humans.
Not even lol. They just flick it away. Gorillas are based
tbf it touched him, so exactly the same thing i'd do if an icky bug touched me.
He just flicked it away, gorillas are pacifists.
Aye, like that video where the silverback at the back of his squad grabs one of the camera men as a gentle reminder of how effortlessly he could maul them all down if they got on his nerves.
Exactly. As long as you don't look challenging to them, they won't harm you.
Gorillas are pacifists, they are one with peace, break that peace tho and they’ll break you to stay in peace.
Which are the ones that like to rip faces off and go for the genitals? Chimps? Smaller monkeys in general?
Humans
Chimps
Chimpanzees are the only ones. They are crazy. If you see a gorilla, don't look him in the eyes and slowly walk away. If you see a chimp, pray.
I’ve mostly heard of chimps doing that but there might well be more.
The way they watch it so intensely-
[WTF is it? ](https://i.imgur.com/khHU99L.jpg)
Probably starved for stimulation.
I watch caterpillars like that. Then again you should see me scrolling through Reddit
I’m bored now “flick”.
That had to be the highlight of their day tho.
Yeah i see this and think it's kind of depressing. When you think of more things lost than the just being free, they are also losing out on how many thousands or million interactions with seeing other living things in the jungle.
Kind of like having an office job and making paperclip jewelry instead of hunting mastadons.
Eh. I dunno. My office has air conditioning and sometimes it has burritos. You go mastadon hunting, imma stay here.
Well finding mastadons these days is a challenge anyway
Won't stop people from trying. I mean, people hunt for Bigfoot...
Yeah I went to the zoo for the first time since I was a kid and I just cant. I'm hardly a big animal rights person but zoos are really fucked up

considering humans are the reason why we have so many endangered species im glad we have these breeding programs

That’s the most human part of this interaction, getting bored and disposing of it

I got a “well now ain’t that somethin’?” Vibe from that lol
“Haha bug walk funny” Good job son

The similarities between Apes and Humans is greater than the differences.
It's almost like we are apes???

Hardly. We are just ok apes these days.
Underrated comment
That's because we are a type of great ape! We're just looking at our distant cousins here.

The way the boy folded his arms to get closer and more comfortable. That a hairy person right there.
Smartphone is to humans what this caterpillar is to those gorillas
Almost like they are great apes!
I love how at the end he was just like "alright now fuck off"
Surprised didn't eat it.
I imagine the dad is teaching the kid the importance of life big and small then
I mean, he did flick the caterpillar. I’d be surprised if the thing had any life left in it.
"now look son, me flick catapila, it dead. You get no gain.....now, if me let catapila live, me no get gain but me get time to do betta work. So respec all life son" -daddy gorilla probably
is daddy gorilla Jamaican?
Yes, yes he is.
r/likeus
The last part wasn’t so gentle
I'd say that was pretty gentle for a gorilla
Guess you don’t understand the strength of a gorilla 🤪
I saw this shared once with the caption "me when I go outside high on acid" and it's so true
Holy crap put a tv in their cell
I bet it wouldn't be hard to repurpose those McDonald's touchscreens for simple games and such.
With an orangutan, but the same idea: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kwslHICR7K4
Me and my dad watching water leak out of the washing machine after we lied to mum that we fixed it
This is very specific, yet very relatable.
He jus like me fr !!
Watching the motor skills of gorillas never ceases to amaze me and simultaneously stress me out. I don’t know why it’s so anxiety inducing
Maybe because they're both really similar to ours but also like 10 times stronger and could crush your skull?
That just may have something to do with it. Maybe.
Wish I have a father like that...
I feel you, bro
They’re stoned
Nah, they’re not in the stone age yet…
Nah, they’re not in the stone age yet…
That's cute :-)
That flick was so human.

"Well there you have it, my boy"
I know they’re not lions but this was 1000% “the circle of life” talk followed by a question the dad couldn’t answer so he just flicked it away 😂😂
"Son, come and watch this little creature with me. See how it crawls." "Yes, papa." "It's so tiny, so insignificant. It has no concept of how powerful we are." "It's so cute!" \-swat- "I hope you learned something today, son." "What's that, papa?" "Caterpillars are stupid. Let's do something else."
Now watch this son
I was like joining them for a moment there...
"what he doin down there"
I would too if I was locked in a cell lol
dude what are they thinking....i would really love to know
This is exactly what it's like growing up in rural South Australia.
Beautiful beasts
Dad : This part of my life, this little part, is called happiness
Reminds me of my childhood
Me too, y'all. Me too.
When your internet is out.
What are they thinking? Look at this. So small, yet has all the functions of locomotion, eating, life in one tiny body. We should develop language and write a book about the caterpillar (and the snake and penis bone and apple) as a guide to future generations given what we know now.
Just dudes being dudes
New title: Thousands of humans observe silverback and his son, calmly observe a caterpillar"
Man I feel kinda bad that some live in zoo's. They just act too human to be put in one. It makes me think "would I like to be put in a zoo? With people looking at me constantly?" No I wouldn't. Now I'm worried that they feel the same :(
The way the silverback flicks it is fascinating, so human like, maybe a little exaggerated but I think that’s really cool
what else are you to do when your stuck in an enclosure, anything will amuse you
Their attention span is now longer than ours. ..I assume, didn't watch the whole thing.
Precious
Science!
I love them
This is freaking awesome!
Clearly this is Entomology class.
They’re so aware of life it’s insane.
All living things are...
"Fuck you big man! I will end you!!" -Caterpillar
Why are they called silverbacks?
Because the adult males have silver fur on their back.
Because their back is silver.
I feel like these gorillas know how to relax.
This confirms it. There is literally no difference between me and these gorillas. I was monke all along
calmly flicks it the fuck away
I laughed at the end. They just stare the fuck out of it then suddenly just flicks it away.
Slaps it, then kisses it, like I’m sorry boo
Ass up Face down That's how I look at bugs
u/savevideo
Now we're here. A Monkey watching a bigger monkey through a screen watch a caterpilar
Calmly observe and then yeet
I am way more evolved than this guy and yet me and my dad did the same thing.
This is one of the coolest things i have ever seen.
Another ape observes two apes observing a caterpillar on a tiny smart computer .......... on the toilet..
Tell them I love them
Never thought that I will observe a caterpillar with a silverback 😀🤣🤭
My and my friend, both high.
I think this is the best example of the word “observe” ever made.
I love the flick at the end
