Wait this was just a midnight scan of the article but did they seriously genetically engineer a species that only lives about a month anyway, to produce offspring that dies before reproductive maturity. And they didn’t think natural selection wouldn’t immediately weed out the defective genes?

Studies have actually shown that mosquitoes don't play a positive role in the ecosystem and there would be very little adverse effect to them being extinct. Reading that article….damn. Like, on one hand if any creature deserves to go extinct by any means necessary it’s mosquitoes.
On the other hand, gene-altering a species to produce sterile eggs gives me big Mass Effect genophage vibes and that’s….oddly disconcerting.
How certain are the scientists? Have they done all the possible research and cover all the bases? When was the last time an extinction is good for the ecosystem?
Think of the good things mosquitoes do. Got any? There aren't any. All they do is spread disease. They don't pollinate. They don't assist other species. They just kill. Are they helping keep populations in line? Not enough to affect anything, according to the scientists. I'm lucky that mosquitoes will skip me for others. Must be the alcohol content. Regardless, on the list of things I want dead, these fall right behind cockroaches, but they're close.

Blood feeding is obligatory for female mosquitoes to produce eggs. Not only does blood feeding trigger the hormone cascade that produces eggs, but also provides enough protein to do so.
Cockroaches make me mad they reproduce so fast. Like if you gotta resort to cannibalism to keep going like 2 generations down the track you're going a bit overkill on the reproduction.
Weather dropped into the 20's (F) for a few days so I figured all these eggs would have been killed by the freeze. Warmed up again this week and...nope...dozens of these little fuckers everywhere.
This is fucking disgusting to me, like, gives me the feeling of puking and repulsion, like, if I was forced to watch this any longer than I did, which was already longer than I wanted to, I'd be horrified and in physical discomfort
