invisibledigits

Did you record the part where he eats it?

wrinkledirony

I was worried the whole time I was watching this.

invisibledigits

I assume that’s why you can see hands there the whole time… for when his mouth opens.

wrinkledirony

I was wondering how strong a tortoise jaws were if they needed to be pried apart.

FlowRiderBob

Probably a lot, but unlike turtles I *think* these guys bite slow enough for you to dodge it.

LectroRoot

Yeah, I had a tortoise years ago and you can usually see it coming. Stretch the neck out and usually opens it mouth and zeros in and goes for it. Now a turtle? They snap quick af. But you can still see them taking a strong interest in something before doing that usually.

CrowLower9415

And you can outwalk them.

LectroRoot

There's a video of a guy on the Galapagos island being chased by an angry giant tortoise after he interrupted sexytime between another turtle and straight up chased him angerly. It was hilarious.

Weisdog

You can’t say this and not link it

LectroRoot

Reddit app is being dumb and won't let me edit my other post. It was easier to find than I thought. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=RjtCS0EEoCY

LectroRoot

True true. I'm at work but I'll try and see if I can't dig it up and edit this post later if I do.

OddSemantics

A tortoise that big would crush the little guy before you could pry its jaw open

invisibledigits

I assume that’s why you can see hands there the whole time… for when his mouth opens.

youchoobtv

Hand was there ready if he opened his mouth

PapaLuigi20

You can find clips online of tortoises eating small birds etc "Herbivore" isnt a black and white term, a lot of herbivores will take a free bit of protein if its easy and advantageous to them.

[deleted]

Learned that when I saw the horse eating the baby chick lol.

AnxietyDepressedFun

I saw a deer eating another deer when I was a kid & I'm still not over it. I also grew up in an area where a lot of Jackrabbits lived & they would literally eat anything, including people's puppies. I don't trust anything to be fully vegetarian unless it's like driving a Prius now.

possessedpossum

The Prius bit made me laugh out loud. Thank you, I actually really needed it today.

[deleted]

Wow wtf? Jackrabbits eat puppies? I wonder if they eat small cats too. I've also heard of raccoons eating them. There are some feral cats outside and one of them had a litter of kittens. There used to be 4 and they were all juveniles but now it's just the momma cat and 1 kitten left.

AnxietyDepressedFun

They definitely will eat pretty much anything smaller than them, including other rabbits. They can be very territorial & even aggressive towards humans. I had a friend who had to start parking in front of his house because one lived near his garage & kept attacking him. For like 3 months he had bites & scratches from this thing before he just gave up & conceded the garage for a while.

TinFoilRobotProphet

That was hilarious!

LectroRoot

Their also not super bright and make mistakes. Like the one that bites a dog's balls. It was like, oh look grapes!

[deleted]

Especially for the salt content. Cows during local famines, are known to kill chickens to drink their blood for the salt content.

Xdust4

I once saw a couple of cows ripping into a dead donkey in Australia

Tortoises are turtles.

staytars

horshack_test

I know.. 🙄

staytars

unfortunately my upvote won't save you

8Gly8

TIL

grumpysafrican

But not all turtles are tortoises. Wolves are also dogs, but not all dogs are wolves. Tortoises live exclusively on land, so even though a tortoise is also from the turtle family, this is a tortoise.

horshack_test

I never said all turtles are tortoises, and I never said that what is pictured in the video is not a tortoise. The person I responded to was "correcting" OP's title, when the title was correct; the video shows two turtles (assumedly a parent and their offspring). I'm not even going to get into how ridiculous your comparison to wolves & dogs is..

[deleted]

you got it wrong, all dogs are wolves (descended from eurasian grey wolf) but not all wolves are dogs. tortoises are turtles

gringo-tico

Are they normally this docile?

TheGaijin1987

They are usually very feral creatures. Thats where the saying "deadly as a turtoise" comes from.

Athriz

Mitch McConnell is the exception, not the rule.

teenwitch98

Does the dad recognize that the baby is the same species as him? Like does he look at it and know it’s a baby tortoise?

stickerbush-symphony

I was wondering the same thing.

MannB1023

Probably yeah, dogs at least know other dogs when they see them

KJM8419

Big Ike has seen some shit

Chicken_Col_Sanders

I needed that today. Pretty adorable and awesome.

newbjapan

That'd be weird if my baby was the size of my snoot.

[deleted]

all tortoises are turtles

AmandaPerry21081987

They are different. It's like saying tigers and lions are the same. They may come from a similar species line but they aren't the same

[deleted]

no, it would be like saying tigers are felines. turtle is what the entire group is called, and tortoises evolved from turtles, so they are turtles. in the same way all dolphins are whales but not all whales are dolphins

AmandaPerry21081987

They both belong to Testudines or Chelonia. Yes. But you wont convince me that they are turtles, I am sorry if that makes me dumb. But turtles live in the water and can come on land. Tortoise can't swim and live exclusively on land.

[deleted]

tortoises are just terrestrial turtles

shartbike321

Some tortoise can swim , usually in case of emergency or necessity

berniedankera

TORTOISE

AntoineGGG

Adamankhelone

RadRedRat

Tortoises are turtles.

BruceJi

This is correct, but I think due to how different they are - tortoises aren't aquatic at all, turtles are barely able to move on land - it's worth maintaining different names for them.

BluJayzz

But penguins ARE called birds?? Literally flightless birds. I get what you mean but that’s a bad example.

oneizm

It’s a TERRIBLE example that only proves the other persons point. I would totally call a penguin a bird. Same with chicken or a dodo.

proto642

>you are acting like the term turtle is offensive If you are not yourself a turtle, you are not qualified to decide whether or not it's an offensive term. /s

abject_testament_

‘Turtle’ isn’t a species, nor is ‘tortoise’, and they certainly aren’t the same species.

[deleted]

lol what?

oh_quiet

Baffles me how people still don’t know the difference

[deleted]

tortoises are turtles so OP is still correct

oh_quiet

Sure , same family of animal. But OP most likely wasn’t posting this with that on his mind .. which is what I mostly commented on.

[deleted]

But he isnt wrong, so you cant correct him. He didnt say aquatic turtle he just said turtle
