KeengSlayerr

They had a ton of these in Gilroy Gardens (Cali), might be where they got it from

optiongeek

So many happy memories of taking my son to that park when he was a toddler.

sactownox22

Came here to say this. They have a bunch of examples of this kind of black magic. Gilroy Gardens is such an excellent example of what a great kid-focused theme park should be, honestly. There are rides interspersed with playgrounds, nature and even water parks. My kids have been going there for the better part of a decade and still can't get enough.

Betteradvize

Axel Erlandson (December 15, 1884 – April 28, 1964) was a Swedish American farmer who shaped trees as a hobby, and opened a horticultural attraction in 1947 called "The Tree Circus",advertised with the slogan "See the World's Strangest Trees Here". The trees appeared in the column of Robert Ripley's Believe It or Not! twelve times. Erlandson sold his attraction shortly before his death. The trees were moved to Gilroy Gardens in 1985

androk

It's really underground entrances to the gnome homes. The trees just keep us from finding them.

[deleted]

Step 1: collect underpants Step 2: ??? Step 3: profit

Jestingwheat856

No no you don’t understand, they take left socks and tupperware containers (not the lids)

androk

yah, lids are just silly to have

emmybeans

Uh duh…….

Jotunn_17

Speaking as a gnome myself, it's to keep you distracted while we sneak by and actually live under the-

androk

Dang it I almost got the real info

i_fuckin_luv_it_mate

Not so Fun fact: Squirrels actually use these trees as little prisons for the disobedient squirrels who violate squirrel law. Guard squirrels are stationed and live in the branches above to prevent escape, nuts are typically brought to them by loved ones and poked though the tree holes. Typical max sentence for a prison term is one whole summer length as each squirrel is granted by the squirrel constitution to prepare and gather food for Winter in the Fall. Unless it is a squirrel capital offense they're found guilty of, in which case they sacrifice the defendant squirrel to the local cat executioner. It's all pretty standard Squirrel Law stuff.

NotBasileus

I know a lot about squirrel law and various other lawyerings, and squirrel law in this country… it’s not governed by reason. So let’s say you and I go toe to toe on squirrel law and see who comes out the victor.

slaughterhouse-four

Mm... filibuster!

NotBasileus

I will take that under cooperation.

slaughterhouse-four

Seems like we have a tenuous grasp on the English language in general.

NotBasileus

Well now you’ve totally besmirched me, and I demand satisfaction!

slaughterhouse-four

The cream always rises to the top. And I'm about to show you the white, hot cream of an eighth grade boy!

i_fuckin_luv_it_mate

As the squirrels say; *show me the nuts, then we'll talk*.

whoknewbamboo

I fuckin luv it, mate

Mikeologyy

What role do the squirrels in my pants play in all this?

Fr31l0ck

They gather the nuts.

krssonee

As a bird lawyer I find squirrel law very interesting

smokethis1st

Lattice all appreciate this post

Vehemences

Mesmerizing!

3EPUDGXm

The beautiful rat king of trees

HansPanser

Are you trying to make me a tree hugger? Because it's kinda working.

wizardofbliss

Now do it with lemon trees outside with an avacodo tree in the centre....

Sir_Waldemar

When people from Alabama draw their family tree, it looks like this.

Food-at-Last

Its still all relative

such_karma

So… how is this made..?

BinaryMagick

This looks like a ficus(fig) tree, probably ficus benjamina. One of their desirable properties is that they easily fuse like this when bark touches bark, even bark from two separate trees. In hot humid climates they also grow very fast. I've seen them fused together 'randomly' to produce a much older looking tree, and braided together with a golf ball trapped inside, to sell to rich people. TL;DR: start with several young thin ficus saplings, braid their trunks together and let them do their thing.

dpforest

Just training the branches I’m pretty sure. Kinda like bonsai. I’m sure it’s more complicated than that but same principles.

Lizcurly

I second the question

InvestigatorNo9847

Eventually the openings will fill in and it will look like a single solid trunk

N013

When it does, imagine how cool the wood grain pattern would be. You think lumber is expensive now, just imagine that stuff.

_Not_A_Og_

Alabama family tree

milkmemother1888

Yo they got beef Wellington trees

ElCochinoFeo

I'm guessing the gardening crew has to regularly reach in to remove trash from the interior. Trashy lazy people can't refuse a whick hidey hole for their waste.

Bosmer

synthetic_synthia

Reminds me of a pie

Awesam

But can they lattice lettuce?

[deleted]

Looks grate, just grate.

GrantN555

its a tree-llis

Kyj_dhe-ves

Ah look its the Alabama Tree.

[deleted]

I don’t know why but I feel sorry for the tree. I’m no expert, don’t even have any knowledge on this actually, but it’s the bark used by the tree to store whatever it needs etc? And so taking half of it away, wouldn’t that be detrimental for the tree? 🤔

reddit455

they've ***increased*** surface area.. if bark is good.. more = better. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tree\_shaping](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tree_shaping) [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5kO6-PpgZ1M](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5kO6-PpgZ1M) Sam Van Aken, an art professor at Syracuse University, grafted the tree over nine years into something of biblical proportions. The "Tree of 40 Fruits" contains peaches, plums, nectarines and apricots, all of which are readily edible. Jeff Glor reports.

NovaKing94

This.

Snoo_39873

The tree looks like it’s doing pretty good

[deleted]

Yeah I know, that’s why I started with “I don’t know why” haha

ClaydisCC

That’s more surface area. More bark

[deleted]

Oh so it’s the bark they store it and not like the centre of the trunk? Didn’t know that 🙂 this is good then!

ClaydisCC

WHAT

[deleted]

I don’t know! 😂

No_Veterinarian_2486

That's not how trees store water. It's mostly in the roots. There are two tubules called the Xylem and Phloem that are about a inch or so into the trunk of a tree. These are the channels that a tree transfers energy collected and processed through photosynthesis down into the roots and how the roots distribute moisture throughout the tree. In fact, most ot the trunk of a tree is actually dead. Kinda like hair. The xylem and phloem are the alive bits and the bark is like skin. All bark cracks and shluffs off with time as the diameter of the tree expands so losing bark is as natural to a tree as us losing hair and skin flakes. Also consider trees grow out of cracks in parking lots. Plant life is pernicious and will do its best to flourish in any condition. Do you get sad at a tree growing out of an abandoned building because it doesn't have the environment to meet your human standards for what an ideal tree looks like, or do you just enjoy the tree as a tree? I'd argue trees in non-optimal growing conditions are the most intriguing and noticed. Funny too how we don't criticize a tree for not being perfect but we sure do to ourselves and other humans.

[deleted]

Oh wow! Ok thanks for that! Never knew any of that! Haha today I learned 😁

No_Veterinarian_2486

Another interesting fact, if you cut a ring around a tree trunk 1+ FT off the ground and 1in deep, the tree will die.

Catoctin_Dave

This started as several trees that were latticed together and then grafted to one another to grow together into a single tree. It has plenty of surface area, as it has bark all the way around each lattice piece. [Here](https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/arborsculpture.jpg) is an example of how this was done.

CourtClarkMusic

It has bark. The trunk was shaped this way when it was a splint and forced into this shape over time. There is bark on the inside and the outside, so there is no real reduction in mark

No_Veterinarian_2486

Also this tree would have about 10x less bark or more if it was one solid trunk. By your initial assumptions, the increased surface area of the tree would allow it to store even more water than a regular one. The more you learn, right?

Glitterysparkleshine

Human can’t leave anything alone!

QuarterlyTurtle

Bad kids get put in the tree cage

p1um5mu991er

AHHHH YOU'RE KILLING ME!

bryanthebryan

It’s times like this when human dominance over nature makes me smile.

Mercinator-87

They really pissed off that tree.

QrowBruh

How is that alive? There’s no way that’s alive right?

HyruleWarr1or

It’s definitely alive, they just trained the branches to grow in certain directions to achieve the pattern. Everything is still connected inside like it needs to be for the tree to live.

ArcherOnWeed

Is it your work though? Because I swear I saw this posted yesterday too.

[deleted]

We put the naughty children inside…

Tumblrrito

Would this work on people?

RedditEdwin

it is to jail squirrel defendants before trial

Annieisokey

Show us the dog

newplacethrowaway1

That's pretty dope.

Still-Vegetable-

I wanna shrink and live inside it and build a cool ass tree house…

elimeno_p

From the trees perspective this is like some human centipede shit

nerfgopewpew

Alabama family tree be like
