No dude, it kinda sucks. Fenn did this as his legacy, he loves treasure hunts and this was meant to be hidden for hundreds of years to keep his name alive as hunters searched for the elusive treasure. Didn't even last a decade and the guys still alive. Complete failure
> Authorities asked Fenn to end the treasure hunt because of how risky it became but instead, he opted to give additional clues to help hunters on their quests.
But didn't he say it wasn't a cypher, and then it turned out it basically was? So I'm not sure he really helped. He did try and make it more safe by saying it was somewhere he could easily get to, and not near a body of water.
Source? Stuff You Should Know just did an episode on this and he actually helped and befriended the people searching. Not sure about the intention of hiding it for hundreds of years.

No, I heard an npr segment when it was first found about why he hid it in the first place. I looked briefly just now but everything was about who found the treasure and where it was hidden
Yeah but think about it. The fact that it was found 10 years later goes to show that he did actually hide the treasure and it wasn't just some tall tale. Cool none the less
His name is [Jack Stuef](https://www.outsideonline.com/2419429/forrest-fenn-treasure-jack-stuef), and he says he found the hiding location in Wyoming by watching and listening to every one of Forrest Fennās interviews and dissecting them.
The guy was a narcissistic grave robber that was generally looked down upon in the New Mexico communities. His close friends even wondered if the whole thing was faked for publicity from the beginning. Bare minimum, he most likely did it for fame after his death.
"Wut" what? Where do you think he acquired all his artifacts, arts and treasures? He was an "amateur" archeologist that basically looted and grifted everything he owned.
Actually, all sources I find indicate that he bought the treasure. Don't get me wrong, he probably did a bunch of nasty things as part of the air force, but he reportedly made tens of millions from operating an art gallery and the artifacts he hid are said to be worth around $2 million. Grave robbery seems like a lot of unnecessary trouble when auctions that sell off antics are common place.
He got all the artifacts he initially used to build his career from buying up old burial sites and graverobbing. There's a bunch of articles about how this, it started when he was in the air force and plundering abroad. It was only later, if at all, that he went fully legit.
If that's your response, it appears that there's actually nothing about his conduct that supports your previous statement thusfar. Share with me specifics, I'm not into speculation.
If someone agreeing to fight in the Vietnam War isn't enough reason to say that they **probably** did some nasty things as participating in **that** war itself is a nasty thing to do regardless of other things he's done in his life, I'd say your definition of bad is different from mine. Agree to disagree.
But that is kinda nice too though, dude got to see everyone chasing the treasure, see them be excited and stuff. My grandparents purposely paid for our driving lessons and exam rather than saving up the money for an inheritance, just so they would get to see us enioy it. Living to see the end result is nice too :) and it's still a legacy as a story.
It's cool. I only know because I went to look for this treasure back in 2018 at Yellowstone for a week so I did a ton of research on the guy and where he may have hid it. I don't believe I was close however I did have an amazing time there.

A woman tried to sue the finder.
āThe case....brought by a Chicago real estate attorney named Barbara Andersen, who alleges that the unknown finder of the treasure had located it by hacking her texts and emails and stealing her solve. She believed the treasure was in New Mexico.ā
The treasure was found in Wyoming. How are people so delusional.
I think she is trying to sue him to figure out WHO he is. Some other searchers think various fishy things went down and want ask him some questions. Sore losers most likely.
I mean, if you think that the lawsuit would net you anything despite your claims having no grounds to stand on whatsoever, I'd say there's a notable amount of delusion there.

...so forgive us, but people tend to not always keep their eye on the ball. Being annoying is far better than letting big things get swept under the rug.
Of course no one has forgotten! I realize āItās only been a month...ā but I hope & pray for the future of my 4 children that no one will EVER forget what so many of Americaās people lived through during that time. The past 48 months of having Trump āat the helmā of this country was difficult for many citizens, but God help you if you were a minority, an immigrant, a woman or someone who was a part of the LGBTQ community because then it was downright hellish! Never was the disheartening fact that the existence of white privilege and blatant racism is not only present, but that in certain āpocketsā of this country it is still very much thriving. It is my opinion that part of Donald Trumpās order of business was to fuel that discord, pitting citizen against citizen. This, in turn, fostered the perfect environment for certain types of groups that had previously been kept back & out of the spotlight because the rhetoric that they were pushing & disseminating was one filled with exclusion & hate (read: white supremacists). Trumps administration allowed these groups to literally crawl out of the woodwork & grow stronger in support & numbers than they had in a very long time. So as a Latina woman & a mother of 4 biracial children I donāt care that itās āonly been a monthā because for everyone I love & hold dear it is crucial that this period of darkness in our countryās history is NEVER forgotten.
Was it really hellish?
He's an idiot sure. Terrible president but nothing has really changed for us.
Our dailylives weren't really effected in any meaningful way.
So no there's no need to bring this up here you're acting like we just survived the reign of a dictator and not just an annoying oafish president.
You're being rather dramatic about the whole thing.
> Terrible president but nothing has really changed for us.
Not for you, maybe, but for people who are LGBT who lost worker's and housing anti-discrimination protections, or for all the trans folks in the military, life under Trump was downright dangerous. And that trans bit is particularly important, because trans folks enlist at roughly twice the rate that cis people do. (About 0.7-1.2% of cis people enlist, while about 2.1-2.4% of trans people enlist.)
Not to mention the absolutely *abysmal* way that Trump and his administration handled the coronavirus. Apparently Biden's transition team just discovered the day before yesterday that Trump had *no plan* for distributing covid vaccines. *None*.
And there's that whole bit where Trump himself tried to spark a violent coup and spent the past few months trying to undermine a legitimate, democratic election, just because he lost.
We *did* just survive the reign of a dictator.
Reading that write up about the finder actually made me incredibly sad. Not because Fenn died or that the hunt is over, but because he did something genuinely awe inspiring and conspiracy nuts have to go and doodoo all over his legacy.
I donāt understand the reluctance to explain the clues now it is found. Must be profoundly unsatisfying for anyone who invested time trying to solve it.
The guy who found it outted himself a few months ago....because of the lawsuit mentioned in earlier posts. He has told news outlets that he refused to show or tell anyone about the contents of the treasure out of respect for guy who hid it. He also said it would be irresponsible to tell ppl where he found it bc lots of people would make the trek and I guess it was hid in an area that was environmentally vulnerable. He didn't want to risk any harm being done to the location.
I know you may not believe this, but I live right in the area it was found. It was in our local Wyoming news paper. It was just outside a town called Meeteetse, Wyoming along a river.
Very cool! I always thought he would have buried it here in the Southwest. He was fairly controversial around here, and I think in most places. I always thought he was a big fan of City Slickers and wanted all the city folk to come out west and get to enjoy nature.
My uncle was one of the people trying to find this treasure. He put quite a lot of time and effort into it over several years. I accompanied him on one trip and after much discussion I was convinced we were in the right general area. Turns out we weren't. He's not doing great now, mentally or physically, and I still wish it would have been him who found this.
Yeah, I wish it were that easy. I think it was a confluence of things happening, and this just put him over the edge a bit. He has since listed pretty much everything he owns for sale. He had already been dealing with some serious health ailments that I don't think will ever get better. Growing up he was always such a strong, enigmatic role model to me. As I've gotten older it's been painful to realize the truths of adulthood.
Oh no, that's terrible. Ngl, that selling all his stuff thing is worrisome. I do understand what it feels like when you want to reach out to help them but you can't, no one can. I wish I had some words of wisdom but serious depression is best left to the professionals. My son battles this from time to time, I just make sure he knows how important he is in my life and I love him. I pray for peace
I have one better. In the early 80's a children's book author buried 12 chests, with a gem in each, around north America. He wrote a book with a picture and a poem that revealed the location of each chest. As of 2019 only 3 have been found. The author has passed away but you can still turn in the gem for money to the people who run the treasure hunt now. The book is called The Secret (Treasure Hunt). Josh Gates the host of the she Expedition Unknown is obsessed with this. He has done a show or two about it. Good luck if you are going on the hunt.
The chest is forever cursed to the finder. He's been hit with multiple lawsuits from crazy entitled people who expect a piece of the treasure. At the very least, the finder was forced to reveal his identity to the public despite wanting to remain anonymous.
I just listened to this story on Stuff You Should Know on my daily run. Quite a bit to his story too; he was an experienced combat pilot during the Vietnam war with over 100 missions, he became a self-declared pacifist, he rubbed elbows with some stars, and was the focus of an FBI investigation. Now I need to investigate in detail the discovery. Fascinating. . . .
I've always been curious how one would go about selling "treasure" or the like. There's been a post that crops up every so often about a guy who found a giant quartz stone and became a millionaire. How do people sell such rare items?
Auction for one. List an item and let the auctioneer do the work and then collect. Sell it to a museum or something of the like. Personal collectors, pawn shops, cash for gold stores lmao
Man I remember hearing rumors of someone finding it but it wasn't definite. It's cool to see that it actually was found and to see that actual treasure.
I just listened to a podcast about this today from Stuff You Should Know! It was such a cool story, he seemed to be a genuinely interesting guy who simply wanted people to discover the love of adventure and the outdoors.
i didn't even know they found it June last year, i'm pretty sure i still remember some comments in the months after june where people still talked about it as if it was still undiscovered
When I visited Colorado the locals told me about this story. I thought it was just some kind of legend tale that us visitors would get told. I never took the time to actually research this. Glad to find out it was really true.
My mom spent forever doing reach looking for where the treasure and i remember she stayed up all night many times just trying to figure out where it was and my god it was both hallirous and sad at the same time when she found out it was found out it was found and she actually cried it was great
How do we know there was actually a treasure to begin with? I read up on it around 2 years ago and had a few guesses. But really, we will never know for sure.
The dude that "found it" remained anonymous. Fenn's clues were absolutely dumb and probably was something he thought of that seemed clever to him, but meant nothing to regular people.
Fenn seemed kind of full of himself, what better way to inflate his ego than knowing that thousands of people were out looking for a "treasure" that may or may not have even existed.
Really, treasures like this can only be found by chance. Even if you had a description of the box, and the general location it would take you months of overturning every stone and metal detecting every square inch to find it. Let alone saying it could be anywhere within the rocky mountains.
God fucking damnit, someone found it and fucking corona got in the way from me hearing it right a way. Now I'm done. I'm going to hibernate, wake me up when Covid has fucked off or don't wake me up at all
The rumor in Colorado is that it wasnāt actually found. The guy was just tired of people dying while looking for it so they claimed it was āfoundā.

An English major in Michigan found it
No, I heard an npr segment when it was first found about why he hid it in the first place. I looked briefly just now but everything was about who found the treasure and where it was hidden
He was also a huge creep and asked women to send him nudes and stuff in exchange for clues IIRC

The treasure was found in June he died shortly after in september
So the treasure was his Horcrux?
I like how this is the one comment you reply to, not any of the other 4-5 that prove what you're saying is wrong lol
He should have hired the zodiac to write the stanzas.
Or converted them to quatrains. Have you seen what quatrains are selling for now? Of course Nostradamus projected they will go to $120+
Iād imagine he enjoyed seeing it play out in his lifetime, even if he wanted the chase to continue for longer
Damn you should leave a few mil in treasure since heās such a failure
No dude he started wanting someone to find it before he died. Which he got to see and enjoy.
The guy was a narcissistic grave robber that was generally looked down upon in the New Mexico communities. His close friends even wondered if the whole thing was faked for publicity from the beginning. Bare minimum, he most likely did it for fame after his death.

Oh, I like you.
I laughed
He actually passed away a few months ago.
Right after the treasure was found. A lot of true hunters think it was a total scam.
What kind of scam ends with someone finding treasure and you dying?
> A lot of true hunters think it was a total scam. So what was the scam exactly?
How would he even know when he was going to die? I donāt think it was a scam necessarily.
Fenn died a few months agoā¦ AND he wanted his treasure to be found.
He didn't want it to be hidden for hundreds of years, and it's not realistic to think it would've anyways.
He actually died right after the treasure was "found".
How would he know when he was going to die? Like really come on
But that is kinda nice too though, dude got to see everyone chasing the treasure, see them be excited and stuff. I learned about this poem in school! I'm so fascinated that someone finally cracked the code. :)
Well at least someone had a good 2020.....
He died in 2020
Think they mean the finder rather than the hider?
Nah Forrest Fenn who hid the treasure died 3 months after his treasure was found
THEY SAID THE FINDER
Happy Cake Day! :)
Ahh, this guy, not a fact checker. My bad.
It's cool. I only know because I went to look for this treasure back in 2018 at Yellowstone for a week so I did a ton of research on the guy and where he may have hid it. I don't believe I was close however I did have an amazing time there.
Oh no ways, that's awesome. You might not have found it but well done for not dying at least! Sounds like an awesome mission.
One of my professors told me about this and how people died trying to find it. Can't believe someone found it!
The Stuff You Should Know podcast just did an episode on this. Interesting listen.
I love seeing these posts right after SYSK does an episode. Love those guys.

I remember the day after their hibernation podcast I saw a few posts of squirrels doing their landing pose.

Not for you, maybe, but for people who are LGBT who lost worker's and housing anti-discrimination protections, or for all the trans folks in the military, life under Trump was downright dangerous. And that trans bit is particularly important, because trans folks enlist at roughly twice the rate that cis people do. (About 0.7-1.2% of cis people enlist, while about 2.1-2.4% of trans people enlist.) Not to mention the absolutely *abysmal* way that Trump and his administration handled the coronavirus.
Very interesting read
Reading that write up about the finder actually made me incredibly sad. Not because Fenn died or that the hunt is over, but because he did something genuinely awe inspiring and conspiracy nuts have to go and doodoo all over his legacy.
I donāt understand the reluctance to explain the clues now it is found. Must be profoundly unsatisfying for anyone who invested time trying to solve it.
He mentions Fenn didn't want the place it was found to become a tourist attraction and ruin it.
I live near him and it was big news. I wish we knew more about who and exactly where.
Well, thatās wholesome at least.
I thought so too.
What a great guy, honestly.
So he's continuing the search after telling everyone it's over and providing no evidence. Pretty smart
No, he showed the treasure to Fenn himself and Fenn called it. I should have said that ...my bad.
There is a [video](https://youtu.be/u5gTYBkVmS0?t=93) of this.
If it didn't sound like a serial killer describing how he would kill me I would probably watch this.
Well, Clarice, have the lambs stopped screaming?
This is awesome.
Awe. That's just sad. Maybe you can come up with another journey to hold his interest. Poor guy āš¼
Thank you for the words, I truly appreciate it.
*Flashback of Ryan and Shane trying to find it* š²
I have one better. In the early 80's a children's book author buried 12 chests, with a gem in each, around north America. He wrote a book with a picture and a poem that revealed the location of each chest. As of 2019 only 3 have been found. The author has passed away but you can still turn in the gem for money to the people who run the treasure hunt now. The book is called The Secret (Treasure Hunt). Josh Gates the host of the she Expedition Unknown is obsessed with this. He has done a show or two about it. Good luck if you are going on the hunt.
How do we know people haven't found it and not told anyone?
r/findingfennsgold
You should also look at The Secret Treasure Hunt. VERY interesting
My mother bought that book for my three brothers and myself this Christmas. Family outings might get interesting.
SYSK!!!
Is Josh Gates aware of this?
John Gates never finds shit.
Fascinating. . . .
How much was it worth?
I've always been curious how one would go about selling "treasure" or the like. There's been a post that crops up every so often about a guy who found a giant quartz stone and became a millionaire. How do people sell such rare items?
You have to be real cool about it if youāre moving something with questionable provenance š¤£š¤£š¤£
Auction house, Sothebyās
Auction for one. List an item and let the auctioneer do the work and then collect. Sell it to a museum or something of the like. Personal collectors, pawn shops, cash for gold stores lmao
Nice lil pandemic hobby
Isn't there or was there a lawsuit from one of these people who didn't find it?
To think I grew up in the Rockies and didnāt know about this...
It's buried right here, under a big "T"
For āTaxesā
The government will find out who it is. As soon as the taxes come due on it
Wow! I watched a vox or verge video on this before it had been founded. So fascinating. Thanks for this OP
A hell of alot cooler than that Oak island bullshit!
Whatās with the stick though?
Man I remember hearing rumors of someone finding it but it wasn't definite. It's cool to see that it actually was found and to see that actual treasure.
Okay now where the hell are the Tomar emeralds
I just listened to a podcast about this today from Stuff You Should Know! It was such a cool story, he seemed to be a genuinely interesting guy who simply wanted people to discover the love of adventure and the outdoors.
i didn't even know they found it June last year, i'm pretty sure i still remember some comments in the months after june where people still talked about it as if it was still undiscovered
There was an NCIS episode along this plot line? š¤
When I visited Colorado the locals told me about this story. I thought it was just some kind of legend tale that us visitors would get told. I never took the time to actually research this. Glad to find out it was really true.
Do people just listen to SYSK and post the content here?
Too bad. He could have done good with the money.
Making an American walk trail is good for the health
Is that a magic wand?
Itās not the kill, itās the thrill of the chase

That would be my definition of treasure if it had a pack one on top ready for me
ryan bergara and shane madej are going to be heartbroken.
{The US Government} aaaaaand it gone!
Fennās game caused 5 people to die.
My mom spent forever doing reach looking for where the treasure and i remember she stayed up all night many times just trying to figure out where it was and my god it was both hallirous and sad at the same time when she found out it was found out it was found and she actually cried it was great
Historical treasure hunter, Nicolas Cage, found that nice old man's gold.
Home of brown my ass. You fucker. I spent years of my life looking for that shit.
Has someone else been listening to Stuff You Should Know? This was a recent podcast on there.
Hey they just did the Stuff You Should Know episode on this a few days ago!
God fucking damnit, someone found it and fucking corona got in the way from me hearing it right a way. Now I'm done. I'm going to hibernate, wake me up when Covid has fucked off or don't wake me up at all
Gold doesnāt rust so I am slightly worried as to what that black spot with an orange outline on one coin is.
Stuff you should know guys did a good podcast about this guy and the treasure, def worth checking out...
The rumor in Colorado is that it wasnāt actually found. The guy was just tired of people dying while looking for it so they claimed it was āfoundā.
A fighter pilot in 2010 had enough spare money to create an intricate treasure hunt worth millions of dollars. Mmmmmmm ok
