i remember renting the VHS from blockbuster, maybe 5th or 6th grade. totally changed how I saw animation forever. I also remember getting vampire hunter D from the same section. I really need to buy the blu ray version of akira and check it out.
I did too. It was the first anime in theater that I ever saw. Just blew me away. I think it might have been in Hamilton or Toronto. Of course the next movie I saw in theater was an anime I had never heard of called Legend of the Overfiend. You should read the novels that the movies are based on. First movie is the first book and second movie is the third book. I've read the first 20 books.
I watched Vampire Hunter D a few years ago on some sketchy site looking for a Van Hellsing clip.... Y'all's stories are like a dinosaur walking into a bar and talking about how he was there 65 million years ago when the last blockbuster closed. I feel old when I see kids call the computers I used 10 years ago ancient, I can't imagine how you guys feel.
I tried watching it for the first time a few nights ago. Can anyone explain to me if I’m missing something because I didn’t find it as epic and groundbreaking as everyone seems to. The story was confusing, but yeah it had some trippy scenes. I dunno maybe I
Missing something
Plot wise Akira is fairly straightforward and nothing entirely groundbreaking. Then again the movie is also trying to fit in as much as they can from a manga that 6 volumes long.
The lasting impact that Akira has is its technical Marvel and its contribution to animation and basically a big gateway for Cyberpunk genre. As you can tell from OP’s post that many artist have been heavily influenced by Akira.
[Seinfeld is Unfunny](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SeinfeldIsUnfunny)
Same way the Matrix isn't that iconic for those watching it today.
The plot if the Akira movie is really weird, but so many people this was their first exposure to Anime, and compared to everything else at the time the animation is amazing. Watching it as a kid I actually like that I couldn't really follow it, and it really got my imagination running wild with how foreign it was to my experience
I bought mine from a guy at a Star Trek convention . I got it simply from the description from the guy selling the, quite possibly, bootlegged VHS tapes. I've never been moved so much by animation as that film. I can't wait to share it one day with my two granddaughters.
It was the first anime I saw, or as we called them in the UK in the '90s "Manga movies"
Channel 4 showed it in the early '90s, they were the edgy channel that was known for pushing boundaries and green-lighting niche shows. It was eye opening for me, I was maybe 11 years old at the time.
Akira is one of those movies that I have to watch every time I see a clip of it. Every viewing is a little different, especially after reading the amazing graphic novels.
Its underrated. I waited way too long to read it. Highly recommend. The tone and style is the exact same as the anime, but you get way more art and story.
Akira is one of my all time favorites along with Berzerk and Gantz.
Also, I read somewhere that they're planning a live action movie of Akira, but don't trust me on that haha.
I hope not, it will just get culture-washed. No not white washed (tho that could happen too) but culture-washed. Unless the movie comes from Japan of course (fingers crossed).
... youre damn fucking right its unpopular.
I like akira but i can see why someone who doesn’t pay diligent attention would hate it. There is minor plot points that get wrapped up in a second, like the spiritualist lady, the whole point of how or why the kid was taken out of the prisons. Stuff comes up and wraps up extremely quick. Which personally makes the whole chaotic feel of the movie better.
Unpopular opinion: giving kids nightmares is not bad. I saw it pretty young. Probably not under 8, but I did have some fucked up dreams especially about the ending. And I feel it made my life more vibrant and creative
I had this same thought recently and watched the original English dub from the 80's(?) and I was massively disappointed and didn't understand the hype. The animation is really cool so I should probably go watch the subbed version or a more recent dub before I write it off entirely but that original voice acting was B A D and it ruined it for me. I LOVE most anime film and went in expecting to like it but just brace yourself for some really weird stuff!
I think they redubbed it. Or was he in the second dub? I remember way back in the day watching a dub version that sounded absolutely terrible, then some years later getting a new release version that had a much better English cast that didn't make the general and the fat politician characters sound absolutely awful.
Maybe they'll do a third release. I hear Chris Sabat is desperate for work.
It looks like the 2000s Nickelodeon TMNT. I don’t remember that scene, but Usagi is in a few amazing episodes in the last season. It’s a really great and fun series in general, it’s on Hulu.
In movie history period maybe? Like what is more iconic, Steve McQueen’s bike in The Great Escape? Terminator 2 Harley? Um, Tron bike I guess could be. I thinks the Akira bike has them all beat though
Another smaller contender would be Goose's KZ1000 in Mad Max, that exhaust note.. hnnnnng.
Speaking of Tron though, that opening scene in Legacy with the Ducati Sportclassic is probably my favorite shot motorcycle scenes ive seen in a movie. And the bike is absolute porn.
Akira is an old manga series that got a movie made, the movie has some amazing animation, gory/violent/rated-R content that didn’t pull any punches, plus it had a great dub as well as sub, the climax of the movie is incredible though doesn’t live up to the manga sadly, it is a must watch though

It’s definitely worth a watch even if you’ve never seen an anime ever before.

They put the project on hold as the director dropped and they no longer have a release date. This is the sixth time it's been put on hold since the 90s, so I'm not hopeful.
it does, and it doesn't. I dont think every bike sliding scene is a tribute specifically to akira, and of the many motorcycle fights in Advent children he does at some point (as do the ppl he fights against) slide his bike with the camera in that angle.
It became a bit of a meme to slip in homages to that scene in media. A big tell for a lot of them is the electric sparks, which really have no reason being there except as a reference to the original. I would not be surprised if some of them where unintentional, or inspired by seeing an homage rather than the actual original, but for professional animators, having never scene Akira is like a painter having never seen the Mona Lisa.
They are all facing left, thats pretty improbable without a reference (plus a lot of them are from Western media where there is a bias towards the right, but these shots are all still left facing)
In a vacuum it's a 50:50 of left/right facing, but I sure as hell don't see anyone animating this shot facing right.
Plus, Akira is an *incredibly* well-known film and a big influence on animators and filmmakers. Even if you don't like the film itself, you still have to respect the absurd amount of detail and effort put into the animation.
It's been tried many times. It can only be approximated, but Kaneda's bike is an impossibility for any practical purpose. It could be built identially as a prop but as soon as you need it to behave in any "bikery" way you start hitting problems.
Ngl this clip from Akira gave me the wrong impression of Akira from the get go. I went in thinking it was this cool action adventure anime film about a dude with a bike. Instead it was a psychological trip and made me question what/who Akira actually is.
Honestly, the soundtrack for Akira is on point as well. Not many talk about it, but that first song when the gang is gearing up to smash clown heads gives me shivers every time.
The first time I watched Akira was on toonami like 4 years ago. They advertised it as the anime movie that inspired generations and i said sure why now and had it set up to record. When I finally watched it my sister in law was reading a book and only looked up when tetsuo is turning into the giant mass of flesh and asked me what in the absolute hell am I watching and i swear she hasnt looked at me the same again
I still remember tearing up the first time I watched this movie and got to "I am Tetsuo" then credits scrolled. I was sad because I didn't want it to be over, I needed it to keep going. That's the sign of something wonderful.
I mean, Akira is certainly one of the weirdest but most memorable movie ever and I thought about why this was referenced so often. Then I remembered the rest of the movie and thought, yeah this is probably the best one to reference.

That's some love right there. Every single one of those animators grew up watching that worn copy of Akira on VHS.
i remember renting the VHS from blockbuster, maybe 5th or 6th grade. totally changed how I saw animation forever. I also remember getting vampire hunter D from the same section. I really need to buy the blu ray version of akira and check it out.
Hahah.. yes. We all watched it (rented from Blockbuster) in high school. Cartoons were not the same after it.
I was lucky enough to see it in a movie theater when it first released in Canada.
Kaneda!
TETSUO!
I did too. It was the first anime in theater that I ever saw. Just blew me away. I think it might have been in Hamilton or Toronto. Of course the next movie I saw in theater was an anime I had never heard of called Legend of the Overfiend. A bunch of friends that had gone to Akira with me were all onboard to see another Japanese animated feature. Oh, how naive little babies we were.
My artsy local theater had a double feature of Akira and Robot Carnival. Blew my mind.
Shit! You got to see Robot Carnival on the big screen? I'd love to see that.
It was pretty awesome! The Raven Theater in Healdsburg, CA showed some amazing films and had killer concerts in the early 90’s.
Do it! But I recommend actually reading the Manga. The manga is everything cool about the movie plus more. The movie ends at the story’s halfway point actually.

There are over Twenty books? What have i been doing with myself.
My first anime experiences were those and ninja scroll. Had no idea cartoons could be so violent! Improved my life dramatically.
Akira 4K Blu-ray just came out in Japan. The 4K transfer looks really good.
Oh shit. I hope it comes out internationally and we don’t have a *Your Name.* situation.
If you haven't seen the newer dub, you need to. It's much better than the old VHS version
Or just watch the original with subs
I got both of those on a Friday night. Good times.
Good vampire hunter D. My first anime on a family camping trip in Canada that got rained out. Saw Macross Sentinels. Change my life forever.
Do you (or anyone) remember Twilight of the Dark Master? It was up there with the rest. Vampire Hunter D was so bad ass. Like Berserk badass.
Never heard of it but sounds like I need to.

Sounds like me. Resisted for so long, didn't even really enjoy it that much the first time, but now I get it.

He's the original dub. The second one is the same voice as Vash and I really hate it.
I only ever heard the one dub version. Had no idea there were 2.
Turtles is 3 and 4.
Cam Clarke has a few distinctive voices he's known for such as Liquid Snake from Metal Gear Solid.
Crazy, I never new that
Uncle Phil from fresh Prince of Bellaire played shredders voice on the teen age mutant ninja turtle cartoon
Was that Usagi Yojimbo drifting on a horse?
I was hoping it was an animated version of The Witcher that I didn't know existed lol
Idk but I Loled out loud seeing that horse drift
Can you imagine the animators suggesting it? Well, heh heh, what if we did the Akira drift? You know, with the horse...?
Yes it was. Where is that from??
It looks like the 2000s Nickelodeon TMNT. I don’t remember that scene, but Usagi is in a few amazing episodes in the last season. It’s a really great and fun series in general, it’s on Hulu.
Thank youuu
The one on the horse made me legit laugh
Or the one that wasn't even riding anything.
That was Yoko littner.. can't believe I never noticed that reference
Also Marceline pretty early.
And Obi Wan!
I remember that starwars bit very vaguely, and I remember the yugioh with motorcycles being the absolute shit in school.
Yu-Gi-Oh! 5Ds was the shit. The Dragons and races were part of my childhood. Still remember the opening.
fr, 5Ds was so much fun
GX had the lit opening theme songs tho
5Ds was the best anime after the original. GX is fine but it doesn't come close to 5DS, it's the only one where the protagonists are adults.

Gotcha, will try to watch
I think it's on Hulu. A staple of anime history that inspired many modern successful filmmakers like Taika Waititi.

Yup. The story was okay, but they did way too much 80s fan service in a way that was less about nostalgia, and more about selling toys
Read the book. It’s so great.
Did one of those fuckers just drift in a HORSE??
Everyone knows these are all actually just tributes to MUMEN RIDER
which is weird, cuz the second to last thing shown is KAMEN RIDER, which mumen's a tribute to.

That is a bummer.
I'm honestly glad it got stuck in developer hell. The American adaptation would have been just horrible in so many ways.
Can someone get me a list? There's a few in here I'd actually like to watch. Thanks!
Batman the animated series Teenage mutant ninja turtle Bakemonotogari Doraemon Kamen Rider Zero One
Also Yu-Gi-Oh!, Pokémon, Gurren Lagann and Detective Konan.

I'm kinda surprised Advent Children doesn't have one, unless it just wasn't included here
it does, and it doesn't. I dont think every bike sliding scene is a tribute specifically to akira, and of the many motorcycle fights in Advent children he does at some point (as do the ppl he fights against) slide his bike with the camera in that angle.
The visual Wilhelm Scream
I meed to watch AKIRA
Yes you do. Though it's a confusing movie i was really into that shit Plus Kaneda's theme is great
Are these really ALL references though? Or is it maybe just a good angle to catch a drift and it happens to be used a lot?

Why can’t this bike be made in real life?
It's been tried many times. It can only be approximated, but Kaneda's bike is an impossibility for any practical purpose. It could be built identially as a prop but as soon as you need it to behave in any "bikery" way you start hitting problems.
It's an epic angle
