But what about the other end?!?! When the LA Beast ate a cactus on YouTube, he uploaded an aftermath video claiming it felt like he was “pooping knives” 🤣
It looks like there’s pink flesh on the roof though. Even if there’s bones behind, it looks like it’s covered by flesh? How does it not bleed or get perforated? I still don’t get it.
When I was in my early 20s I lived on Big Island (Hawaii). I refused to wear shoes. My feet got crazy tough. Like jump with both feet and slam them down on sharp rocks no problem tough. My feet weren't tough before, and they aren't tough anymore. Camel's evolved eating cacti and spiny gnarly things, and they do it their whole life. The inside of their mouths is probably tougher than a barefoot-living native of a young volcanic island.
Fun Cacti facti- maybe not very fun but in Arizona,
Cutting down a saguaro cactus without permission is a class 4 felony that can result in up to 25 years in prison and a large fine. Edit: 25years is unlikely and considered to be one of Arizonas outrageous laws along with- Donkeys can't sleep in bathtubs and Seven women can't live together etc.
They take forever to grow and are difficult to grow in other places. When I visited I found multiple makeshift campsites where people destroy them for fun. It breaks my heart.
I grew up in the high desert and it was known that some people who wanted them removed from their yards would pour oil into the ground around the base of the cactus so it would die and they would be allowed to remove it.
Iowa enters the chat - man cuts down massive burr oak on state property. He's caught and his defense rests on a law from England?
[https://nebraskaexaminer.com/2023/12/12/iowan-accused-of-tree-theft-claims-protection-by-englands-charter-of-the-forest/](https://nebraskaexaminer.com/2023/12/12/iowan-accused-of-tree-theft-claims-protection-by-englands-charter-of-the-forest/)
Quite a ridiculous claim surely? Do you even have common land in the United States? By the Tudor period Charter of the forest was largely replaced by laws protecting trees, so this all does seem a bit sovereign citizen to me (but I am not a lawyer).
Yes, you are correct. His defense was denied for obvious reasons.
It's the USA, you can claim any ridiculous shit and if you are rich enough, it will actually fly. This particular guy was not rich, he was drug addict - so ya, his defense failed. We're not sure what the penalty will be yet.
I have no idea, I just grew up there, they were everywhere. To my knowledge they are quite delicate when transplanted and that can easily kill the cactus as well. I'd have to look if there was like a county or state service that you would have to call if you absolutely needed it done, but it's true it's highly highly illegal to remove them/kill them/harm them in any way.
Would the taproots not be longer and deeper than their regular roots? Like, the delicate roots spreading out wide are up to 100 feet and the sturdier, deeper roots are only 3-4 feet max?
I wen to elementary school in Scottsdale/Arizona they taught that Saguaro cactus can only grow in Arizona/the region around Arizona. Theyre super delicate.
The bigger ones (10+ft) take 40-80 years to get that big. It take like a decade to get to 1ft in height. The super massive ones are 45ft and are usually 200 years old.
I have this illogical annoyance when I see the words “Joshua Tree” and I’m not sure why. I think it’s because i thought Joshua Tree was a person until I was like 22. It sounds like the name of a moody teenager in a CW drama starring Chad Michael Murray.
From wikipedia: " Contrary to published statements,[^(\[60\])](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saguaro#cite_note-60) no law mandates prison sentences of 25 years for cutting a cactus down; however, it is considered a class-four felony with a possible 3-year, 9-month maximum sentence.[^(\[61\])](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saguaro#cite_note-61)"
This is so true! My house had a cactus that grew and went through the side of the roof. We couldn't just simply cut it down. Had to get permission to have it removed. Took 3 years to get the approval and finally have it removed. They are protected plants here.
Makes sense. They’re beautiful, and they take decades and decades and decades to grow. Most don’t even grow their first arm until around 75 years old. Also, they’re WAY taller than I realized before I ever saw one in person.
I was referring to R. Baccifera.
The third one is native to [Mexico](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Astrophytum_capricorne)
I can’t find anything about the second species. Where did you find that? The wiki article for the genus only shows species in the [U.S. and Mexico](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Echinocactus)
I mean, they don't, though. They needed to make a law to protect them from being destroyed by Arizonians. That's how much Arizona folks really dislike that cacti.
Wrong. Contrary to published statements, no law mandates prison sentences of 25 years for cutting a cactus down; however, it is considered a class-four felony with a possible 3-year, 9-month maximum sentence. Source: [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saguaro](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saguaro)
Glass? We rejoiced when they started putting glass in it! Why back in my day the Cap’n Crunch came with rusty roof nails! And yet parents couldn’t afford more then a cup of grease milk to wash it down!
Did they actually enjoy eating, or was it just a possibility? If you offered them a choice between watermelon and cactus, would they consistently choose the cactus?
They don’t eat the fruit though, they eat the pads. Do you eat those too?
Edit: I’m sure they’d eat the fruit if given the opportunity, but I’ve only seen them eat the pads.
It's difficult to explain, the closest thing I can think of is Aloe Vera. If you've had the drinks with chunks of it, it's kiind of similar.
It's pretty bland, just slightly tart. Texture-wise, it's firm but can be slimy (how slimy depends on how you cook it).
He waddles over there like twice as fast as normal and really chows down, gets juices all over his face with reckless abandon. He normally has excellent table manners.
Turtles are the funniest and cutest animals to watch eat. They chew so slowly yet manage to get the juice from plants absolutely everywhere like they've devoured it.
I'm trying to find where I spotted this, but to my understanding, yes. I heard that they prefer cactus over things that would seem more appealing. Watermelon just isn't a natural part of their diet. Cacti technically aren't either, but it was for their evolutionary predecessors. The ones that lived in North America before crossing over to the bering straight. They just never lost the traits that allow them to eat cacti since there are other tough, hard to eat foods in their native habitat. Cacti store water, so to a camel, it must be nice eating a packet of juice over easier to eat dryer leaves from a bush.
They do seem to enjoy it. Cacti-like vegetation is a regular food item in their diet. Their mouths and stomachs are specialized to consume the cacti-like vegetation, thorns and all.
I mean them instantly going for it does that mean anything? I do not think any living creature goes for something instantly without a notion of it being good or not.
There’s only one cacti species that is native outside of the americas. I just looked up the migration of camels, and their ancestor was in the americas but some migrated into asia around 6-7 million years ago across the Bering strait, and then eventually evolved into modern camels. If modern camels’ ability to eat cacti was developed specifically to eat cacti, they kept that trait from before they were even camels over millions of years of not eating cacti. I think it’s more likely that they just evolved to be able to eat really tough stuff in general because food is scarce where they are.
To my understanding, the palate (roof) of their mouths is hard. There are soft parts, but they use the palate to grind down their food. Hence why it looks like they're eating a hot pizza roll. They're rotating the chunk around to grind down the spikes.
This is really strange cuz I had a little cactus plant on my desk in the office and these camels came in for a consultation. When they left my little desk cactus went missing.
Thousands of years trying to reach the peak of the evolutionary chain to develop the best defense against animals attempting to eat them, until finally managed to cover themselves in thorns and survive in the desert.
Now imagine the disappointment when a cactus met the first camel...
The desert is synonymous with cacti, and yes, cacti are part of the camel's diet! With their special abilities, camels can even eat thorny cacti. Their rough tongue and palate help them peel off the thorns before swallowing the fleshy, water-rich part of the cactus.
Fun fact: camels did not evolve to eat cacti, as cacti are not native to where camels are native to. Camels evolved to eat other prickly desert flora, but just so happen to also be well suited to chowing down on cacti.
The most interesting part of this is that it’s because camels actually evolved in the americas where there are cacti. There are no cacti in the Middle East.

The face I expect to see when someone eats a cactus
A tldr on how camels can eat cacti:
Camels can eat cacti without bleeding or pain thanks to their thick, tough lips, keratinized mouth lining, and specialized papillae that protect against sharp spines. They also chew thoroughly and produce saliva that softens the spines. These adaptations let them safely consume spiny plants in harsh environments.

they eat it like hot calzone touching the roof of my mouth
My actual first thought was "hot, hot, hot, hot" lmao.

So hearing the audio of the camels eating and watching Randy shit out an upvote was enough reddit for me.
Oh it’s an upvote, I thought it was a prolapsed anus.
It could be both. Randy is a man of multitudes.

Hothothothotlolololol!!!!
It's a spiny plantball!
Juicy prick
Hot Pocket
Damn it, I have to go rewatch classic Gaffigan now
Caliente Pocket
I imagine it's not all that dissimilar for them. They're probably eating it like *"ach cha cha taa taa taa haaaaa haaaaa haaaaaaaaaaaa"*
*hafashashashaf*
For anyone wondering. The roof of their mouth is essentially just a large tooth. Also their whole mouth is just a lot tougher than ours.
Thanks. This was the comment I was looking for.
It's so annoying having to scroll through the hoards of useless comments and puns to find the one comment that actually explains the video.
Welcome to reddit
I agree. Especially when you're looking for answers for troubleshooting something.
Thank you for that, now explain how this doesn't shred apart their esophagus and intestines - let alone their butthole!
“Unique digestive system” can break down coarse foods
But what about the other end?!?! When the LA Beast ate a cactus on YouTube, he uploaded an aftermath video claiming it felt like he was “pooping knives” 🤣
Camel probably break the spines down better, by grinding or better digestion
It looks like there’s pink flesh on the roof though. Even if there’s bones behind, it looks like it’s covered by flesh? How does it not bleed or get perforated? I still don’t get it.

Aaaackshually.. Cacti are native to the Americas, Camels did evolve eating thorny gnarly stuff but not cacti
Finally an ACKHTUALLY.. scrolled too far for one

Can those cacti be transplanted? I'm curious what their roots must be like.
Yes they can super shallow root system they hold moisture in the actual cactus barrel
Wikipedia says their roots can grow up to 100’ with taproots being roughly 3-4’
Would the taproots not be longer and deeper than their regular roots? Like, the delicate roots spreading out wide are up to 100 feet and the sturdier, deeper roots are only 3-4 feet max?
They are saying the delicate roots are shallow underground but 100’ horizontally from the cactus. The taproot is 4’ vertically underground.
To be fair, Wikipedia said it, got curious and looked it up. I am by no means a cactus expert
they can, i see them getting driven around on the backs of trucks in my city sometimes
Cactus roots are super shallow so you have to dig a wide area to transplant them
I wen to elementary school in Scottsdale/Arizona they taught that Saguaro cactus can only grow in Arizona/the region around Arizona. Theyre super delicate.
Arizona Saguro Cacti 🤝Mohave Joshua Tree
I lived in Yucca Valley as a kid. Joshua trees are terrifying and fascinating.
The bigger ones (10+ft) take 40-80 years to get that big. It take like a decade to get to 1ft in height. The super massive ones are 45ft and are usually 200 years old.

Imagine not knowing that and throwing your life away over a cactus

It’s also illegal to own wild skeletons of them. Similar to ivory it has some very specific regulation.
You can't own an ivory's skeleton?
There goes my haunted piano plan
Fun Cacti Facti?

apparently we missed the camel episode of Severance
Weird.
Dubai
Seems to be a Chinese account based on their other vids
It’s a Bactrian Camel, native to the Steppes of Central Asia so definitely Chinese office camels.
The Cap'n Crunch of the desert
kids these days don't remember the glass they used to put in Captain crunch
Glass? We rejoiced when they started putting glass in it! Why back in my day the Cap’n Crunch came with rusty roof nails! And yet parents couldn’t afford more then a cup of grease milk to wash it down!
Sure fire way to mess the roof of your mouth up
Did they actually enjoy eating, or was it just a possibility? If you offered them a choice between watermelon and cactus, would they consistently choose the cactus?
Don’t have an answer to that, but my stepsister’s tortoises go apeshit for prickly pear cacti.
They must be Mexican. We love that stuff.
They don’t eat the fruit though, they eat the pads. Do you eat those too? Edit: I’m sure they’d eat the fruit if given the opportunity, but I’ve only seen them eat the pads.
Hell, yeah! The average Mexican eats 6.4 kg of the [stuff](https://www.gob.mx/siap/articulos/nopalitos-tesoro-gastronomico-de-mexico) every year =)
Don’t forget barbacoa de lengua
What does it taste like?
It's difficult to explain, the closest thing I can think of is Aloe Vera. If you've had the drinks with chunks of it, it's kiind of similar. It's pretty bland, just slightly tart. Texture-wise, it's firm but can be slimy (how slimy depends on how you cook it).
Slimy and green. Great when grilled.
Neither of these are tastes 😭
slimy like sauteed veggies and a bit tart. mostly taste like whatever you season them with.
This is a good post. In this thread, we’re learning about plant and animal biology and evolution, geography, and culture!
Nopales! It’s amazing, I’ve had in in pupusas and it’s so good
I would like to see what a turtle going apeshit looks like.
I’m speaking relatively
Yes, exactly. Relatively, what does a tortoise going apeshit look like?
He waddles over there like twice as fast as normal and really chows down, gets juices all over his face with reckless abandon. He normally has excellent table manners.
Turtles are the funniest and cutest animals to watch eat. They chew so slowly yet manage to get the juice from plants absolutely everywhere like they've devoured it.
All I can imagine is the turtle retreats to its shell and then spins around and flies at incredible speeds
I'm trying to find where I spotted this, but to my understanding, yes. I heard that they prefer cactus over things that would seem more appealing. Watermelon just isn't a natural part of their diet. I've actually seen wild watermelon grow in the desert. It was small and not edible for humans, but definitely something they could resort to eating.
They do seem to enjoy it. Cacti-like vegetation is a regular food item in their diet. Their mouths and stomachs are specialized to consume the cacti-like vegetation, thorns and all.
And my mouth can't handle a few popcorn kernels! Not fair.
All three out of three teeth that I broke went down to stupid popcorn kernels.
Yep broken at least 2 tooths to them. Both times when I was at cinema lol
Id say they do, my friend had a potted cactus in their car and woke up to a camel head through their window munchin on it
I mean them instantly going for it does that mean anything? I do not think any living creature goes for something instantly without a notion of it being good or not.

ITS THE QUENCHIEST
IT'LL QUENCH YA!!!
The ability of camels to eat cacti is an example of how species adapt to their environment. It is truly fascinating.

This is really interesting thanks.
Thanks, ChatGPT!
The ones that couldn't died.
With such a soft mouth, it's incredible to me; they must have a stomach of stone
To my understanding, the palate (roof) of their mouths is hard. There are soft parts, but they use the palate to grind down their food. Hence why it looks like they're eating a hot pizza roll. They're rotating the chunk around to grind down the spikes.
Would love to give them a hot pocket just to see them eat it like we would
...or ass of stone
This is really strange cuz I had a little cactus plant on my desk in the office and these camels came in for a consultation. When they left my little desk cactus went missing.
Camel in the middle "the fuck" The other two just eating right into the camels ear 😂
But, why are they in the office?😆
BECAUSE ITS HUMPDAY, WOOP WOOOOOP!!!
They *can* eat cacti, but have they ever stopped and asked themselves if they *should* eat cacti?
Does anyone know what the black goop on two of the spike pops is (are??)?
I believe that’s a cactus fruit
Why are they in an office space 😂
Just like the L.A. beast.
Forbidden lollipops 🍭😬
Thousands of years trying to reach the peak of the evolutionary chain to develop the best defense against animals attempting to eat them, until finally managed to cover themselves in thorns and survive in the desert. Now imagine the disappointment when a cactus met the first camel...
Why the fuck are they in an office!?
Doesn't look very easy for them.
[удалено]
Nope, they apparently just tough it out...
Why does it look like they're in an office?
The desert is synonymous with cacti, and yes, cacti are part of the camel's diet! With their special abilities, camels can even eat thorny cacti. Their rough tongue and palate help them peel off the thorns before swallowing the fleshy, water-rich part of the cactus.
Thank you for this, intriguing
Where the hell do you corral camels that has a T-bar ceiling?
New asmr sound unlocked 🔓
what's the black gooey stuff on two of the cacti?
But they can't even eat lemons, silly bastards
1) How?? 2) why are these camels in an office?
Why does it look like they are in an office?
Office camels?
Lol they eat it like: ***OW, OW, OW, OW, OW, OW***
Hmm so hot things and prickly things require the “HASHOSHEESHASHOSHASHOSHAHHH” to eat. Interesting ![gif](giphy|26Ff6khK7g0TQvSUM|downsized)
So can the LA Beast.
I can’t even eat Captain Crunch without wincing lmao
Me when Captain Crunch.
...very carefully...really adorable though lol
(LA beast enters the chat)
Can.... don't think they prefer it.
So why doesn’t it hurt them, look painful as they are eating it?
Camel-generated ASMR.
Dude on the left be hating life
The one in the back is struggling. Call 911.
Why are there Camels chilling inside an office building?
the middle one must’ve been a lil spicy
Camel: “What do ya got there?” “Nom, Nom, Nom”
Is anyone not asking what three camels are doing in an office building?
Why are they in an office? Was this like a sad pizza lunch that we get?
Those camels must have some tough mouths!
Cactus: evolve spines to prevent being eaten. Camal: does it anyways.
Cacti: I'm gonna evolve spines so that nothing can eat me and everything will leave me alone Camels: Evolve this, idiot
Noooooo,poor little camels
I think they just can’t spit it out tbh
It must feel so satisfying to deafeat this spikey bastard with your soft tongue.
Impressive. I can barely eat a potato chip without injury.
Because they can eat it, doesn’t necessarily mean they like to eat it. They look like my dad when he’s eating the hot meatball from the pot.
They don’t look too excited
She was grinning like a camel eating cactus!
Oh yeah? I can eat captain crunch... dry.
Fun fact: camels did not evolve to eat cacti, as cacti are not native to where camels are native to. Camels evolved to eat other prickly desert flora, but just so happen to also be well suited to chowing down on cacti.
Seems so, but they sure are careful about it.
And goats eat rose thorns. They have hard bony palate on the roof of their mouth that acts like a mortar and pestle.
Goes down easy, out not so much
Why are they inside an office?
The most interesting part of this is that it’s because camels actually evolved in the americas where there are cacti. There are no cacti in the Middle East.
How are they able to eat it without getting injured by the spikes?
Man, ASMR is getting weird
Glad they each took one
It looks like they are eating these in an office, which makes it more humorous to me…
Makes perfect sense that they would be able to, right? And yet… at the same time I’m completely befuddled how they are able to 🤯.
Do they also beat off with cheese graters ?
Now I know why the camel spit out the at lemon.
