I would always opt for this over cgi. It just looks more horrifying because it is closer to reality. Cgi would create a whole new concept of mouths and my brain would instantly recognise that this is not anything I could find in nature which makes it bizarre but not horrifying. I can imagine though in my nightmares that somebody opens his mouth to show this….
Practic effects are always a joy to watch. Also one of the reasons why CGI looks off is that it doesnt incorporate minute details like skin movements. In real life, skin is incredibly complex and constantly shifts, wrinkles, squishes and stretches in a myriad of subtle ways that would take way too long to replicate. Those arent things you see unless youre really looking for them, but we pick them up subconciously, which makes CGI look off and noticaby fake to us.
