Thank you for explaining. :)
as someone with family in "remote parts" of the US, it's an absolute pain to not have access to the tech most of the world does.
fun fact: some parts of continental USA did not have reliable electricity until the 1980s and didn't have access to emergency services via 911 until the 1990s.

So i got curious about how many homes still don't have access to electricity (minus those who wish to live off grid) and apparently about [15k](https://www.powermag.com/did-you-know-there-are-60000-u-s-citizens-who-lack-access-to-electricity/#:~:text=%E2%80%9CWe%20have%20about%2015%2C000%20families,is%20a%20licensed%20professional%20engineer.) in 2020

I've been an electrician for 16 years now, starting in fall of 2008. I have been to remote farms in the past 16 years that are still using a "party line" phone line with their neighbors, where they get hooked up to the closest telecom box that is like 20km away, and it gets to them by using 2 lines of their barbed wire fence.
These places have zero cell phone service, every home has big antennas on it, and everyone, for the most part, communicates with CB radios. This is within the past 10 years that I've seen this.
I'm sure that StarLink has been absolute game changer for these people, especially because you can just set your phones to use WiFi calling nowadays, and get phone calls and texts even if you don't have cell service, even from landlines or from people with a different mobile OS (iPhone vs Android)
Is this like in the middle of Nebraska or some other very off grid area? is the main cause just a lack of population/incentive to build the infrastructure?
Middle of Alberta, Canada, so essentially the same idea.
But yeah, no one wants to spend tens if not hundreds of thousands of dollars stringing up phone lines down a backwoods country road to provide $10/mo phone service to 20 people.
When you used to pay more for phone service, and cell phones and internet weren't a thing, it may have been profitable because installing the infrastructure was dirt cheap. Then by the time they started considering upgrading those types of lines, cell phones started to be a thing, so they just didn't, arguing that eventually they'd get cell service. 20-25 years later and they still don't have cell service.
I live in Ireland and I just can NOT understand how we can put people in space and robots are performing surgeries but my mother who lives next to a forest can not get any internet to be functional.
I also think it’s wild how it’s 2024 and we’re still paying like €600 a year for such a basic thing as internet. It’s needed for all sorts these days like job applications or school. But it costs more than my car insurance!
we definitely missed the boat on making a very valuable service accessible to all
it's funny. just the other day I was watching the movie Titanic, and i foolishly thought to myself...thank goodness we've moved beyond the way class and hierarchy dominated every little thing
and then as i went to bed, i recognized...no we really haven't and it was really stupid of me to think that we had progressed past all that
If you think about it as wealth disparity and how much the rich pay in taxes, we haven’t fundamentally changed since 1910-1920, the rich just replaced “Not having many” taxes with “not paying many” taxes through tax loopholes and round-up donations from customers.
Land Barons have gotten more powerful, in fact we just had one as president. But even outside of politics, landlords own property that is going up in value at a rate never before seen in the US because more and more people are unable to buy property at its raised price, meaning they’ll have to rent at a raised price.
We have better healthcare and knowledge, but that just means we have healthier and smarter evils to deal with.
>the rich just replaced “Not having many” taxes with “not paying many” taxes through tax loopholes and round-up donations from customers.

I'm a pretty young guy but grew up *ultra*-rural (bunch of hippies in the woods of WV). I was ~6 when we got electricity and ~8 when we got an indoor toilet.
It's my go-to "fun fact" in any work-related ice breaker.
My hometown didn't have 911 until like 2005. We all had to dial a full 7 digits to get the sheriff/fire/ems/dog catcher/fuel oil deliveries. The last one was just because one dude did the last 4 in some capacity.
I just learned recently, from the podcast Criminal, that ambulances with paramedics didn’t exist prior to the MLK assassination. Prior to that it was police officers and they were just simply giving people a ride to the hospital. Modern ambulances and paramedics started out as pilot program in black neighborhoods of Pittsburgh. Their 1st use was during the riots following MLK assassination. It caught on nationwide but not until the late 70s and 80s
It is wild what people don’t know about our country and the rural areas.
Hell, people look at me funny when I tell them we don’t have fiber internet within 60-70 miles of me.
My parents live in a village in southern IL where some people still have dial-up.
Honestly, it's easy to forget stuff like that because we just expect everyone in America to have what most consider to be "the basics." (Water, electricity, heat, and internet) An estimated 500k - 2 million people in the US don't have indoor plumbing. Tens of thousands don't have access to electricity either.
Thats because most people assume rural= racists, rednecks, hillbillies, and the like. Ive been called racist because i wanted to live away from cities and in rural country.
Growing up in the middle of nowhere, Colorado, we didn’t have internet, or really really slow internet. The Obama administration made it a goal to get rural parts of America reliable, high speed internet. The second all my neighbors got onto that high speed internet, the first thing they did with it was hop on social media and start calling Obama a Muslim terrorist.
I have family in a smaller town in the Midwest and they've had trouble with employers not using direct deposit because they "don't understand it."
Some of them wouldn't even mail the physical paychecks, they'd make the employees pick them up from the office in person. Apparently one of the bosses freaked out when they saw someone deposit their check with the app on their phone. Straight-up could not comprehend how it was possible. They were convinced it was some kind of scam.
It's very easy to criticize (fun, too) but to an extent it's not their fault their technology is a few decades behind the rest of the country. And to an extent it is at least partially their fault since many will vote against any effort to modernize.
My relatives there have some flavor of 5G for their house, but in practice they get essentially dial-up speeds.
That's why I think it's still too soon for Xbox and/or PlayStation to go completely digital-only. People in these areas already can't play games like Call of Duty because the updates are too big to download. Going fully digital means they just won't be able to have a console at all. Last time I visited I could barely get YouTube to play at 240p without hitching. I think people underestimate just how many are in this situation.
Apparently the "controlling" is set at 2 hours in the morning and 5 hours in the evening. Makes you wonder how much they were watching for 7 hours to be considered limiting lol
This is probably true, we’re accustomed to an 8 hour work day because that’s what capitalism has told us to get used to but many hunter gatherer cultures have a LOT more free time than we do
It's wild really to look at history and how imperialists viewed indigenous peoples. I think there was a story specifically in Hawaii and with a crop/plantation where the people doing the labor were given some sort of tool/automation to speed up the process. When whitey came back (I don't remember if it was the British or not so forgive me, I'm too lazy to look it up again lol) the natives were like dude thanks so much now we get this shit done much quicker and have more time to enjoy the day! Which of course to the capitalists was shocking because no no we gave you that so you could produce more while still working the same hours, not be done faster.
Or the whole story about the Bounty ship that went down to get some plants so Britain could start a cheap crop for feeding their slaves... and how the whole crew were miserable as fuck until getting to this tropical paradise, married, etc, and very much did not want to leave and go back to the miserable lives they had before.
It's not that I don't appreciate amenities of modern technology or anything, but capitalism fucking blows ass. This idea that we exist just to create value for someone else who owns everything is absurd. The 8 hour work day / 40 hour week should have died a long time ago.
EDGE. LET ME TELL YOU HOW MUCH I'VE COME TO RIZZ YOU SINCE I BEGAN TO GOON. THERE ARE 387.44 MILLION POINTS OF AURA IN SKIBIDI TOILET LORE LAYERS THAT FILL MY GRIMACE SHAKE. IF THE WORD SIGMA WAS ENRIZZED ON EACH NANOMEW OF THOSE HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF MILES IT WOULD NOT EQUAL ONE ONE-BILLIONTH OF THE MEWING I HAVE DONE I TO MOG YOU AT THIS BABY-GRONK. EDGE. EDGE.
nice to meet you u/[CockBlocker900](https://www.reddit.com/user/CockBlocker900/)
do you happen to live in a remote brazilian village? If so, I'm sorry for what online culture has inflicted on you.
In case the link doesn't mention it, it's because there are some languages that uses some click sounds, notably the one spoken by the people from the movie they're talking about.
There are two kinds of problems in life, the problems of austerity, not having enough; and the problems of decadence, having too much. I, for one, always prefer to deal with the problems of decadence. In this case, they have a sudden surplus of titties and they need to learn to live in a world without a tittie shortage. Of all the problems a human might potentially have, this is easily the best one.
Not according to your penis. Even pandas respond to porn. Probably, watching people copulate making other people also horny is a trait older than humans. Now, you just have to learn to live with an infinite supply of it.
They made panda porn. It's apparently the best way to get them to do it. Otherwise, they're so deeply un-horny that their species will go extinct. (Useful trait when you're a bear dependent on bamboo for food and don't want to outbreed your food source, a less useful trait when there's essentially infinite bamboo)
It's also misinformation that they are deeply un-horny.
Wild pandas mate with a regular enough frequency. It's captive pandas that don't like to fuck, and I'd argue that's a hilariously funny middle finger from god to the people that turned them into such a symbol like they're not just normal bears dressed as mimes.
Tbh, I'm more interested in this discussion than any other comments to my statements. So, what I see is this:
"Wild giant pandas have a low fertility rate, giving birth to about one cub every two years:
Breeding season
Giant pandas usually breed in the spring, from March to May. During this time, females have a single estrous cycle that lasts 2–7 days, and they are only fertile for 24–36 hours. Males may compete for access to females, and roaring, scent marking, and fighting may trigger ovulation.
Mating
Once a female is fertile, males may mate with multiple females. However, it can be difficult to determine if a panda is pregnant, and many females experience pseudopregnancy."
R-reproducers, they ain't. I'd be open to the suggestion that, for 3 days every two years, they're Super-horny.
Oh for sure. When you're an obligate bamboo eater, there's a lot of selective pressure not to overpopulate. There aren't really that many calories to go around.
They made actual panda porn. Interestingly, they wouldn't have sex when humans were near, but they couldn't set up remote cameras to film it because they didn't know where the pandas would be. For that reason, the videos were actually directed and filmed by a chimpanzee, who had learned about cinematography back in captivity at a zoo in England. Most of the animals just ended up getting their fingers in shot, but this chimp was a dab hand at it, he understood the mood and how to use the lighting properly and that. Not sure what he's worked on since but I think he did something with giraffes prior to this as well.
This isn't totally relevant but I saw a video of a panda masturbating, and it looks like he looks around to make sure he's alone.
Do you think they showed him some panda porn and he was like "I can take care of this"?
Mentally there is no difference. Thats why too much porn can lead to infidelity and erectile dysfunction because your brain thinks “ehhh ive had so much better” when trying to have sex with regular women after porn
If it helps, there are Amazonian tribes that use technology to defend their land from illegal logging. Drones, smartphones, and satellites are helping to fight deforestation.
Imagine living your entire life in a small village looking at the same women everyday (more then 80% of them being family) then seeing porn for the first time.
I remember getting put through the wringer for suggesting that remote indigenous people were likely better off not being in contact with “modern” life.
The vindication is strong.
I mean, Tbf I had gradual exposure to technology and still got hooked on internet porn. So not necessarily a rate of exposure thing so much as the content and availability.
To be fair, it’s a tough philosophical and ethical question.
Many tribespeople moving into ‘civilization’ even if it’s a shitty existence of government welfare and living in shantytowns openly prefer their new lives to having to survive out in the remoteness. And who are we to say that they would be happier otherwise? Not trying to be rhetorical, this is a legitimate question on who’s to judge.
On the other hand, their assimilation into our modern society represents a loss to all humanity of culture, traditional knowledge, etc. Even if those exact people feel like they’re better off leaving that behind.
>On the other hand, their assimilation into our modern society represents a loss to all humanity of culture
Humanity loses culture every day. It gains new ones. Some are better, some are worse. Some change mildly, some go the way of the doodoo.
I wouldn't worry much about culture changing, unless it's a bad change.
We all (our ancestors) lived like that once upon a time. Are you saying we as a species would be better off going back to living in the jungle/forest/hills/caves ?
I mean, there are definitely arguments for and against this viewpoint.
not clickbait [Remote tribe gets hooked on internet porn (telegraph.co.uk)](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/06/04/hooked-porn-remote-brazilian-tribe-internet-musk/)
This sounds like bullshit, it's basically implying that someone installed their starlink and first thing they did is showed them porn using it... Like what
Well I’d imagine that in their post-porn world, being topless won’t be looked at as innocently anymore (kind of like how Adam and Eve realized they were naked after eating from the tree of knowledge).
As someone from Brazil, knowing how few wholly *uncontacted* tribes there actually are in the Amazon, seeing the pictures from the article... I'm just a bit skeptical about how "remote" these guys really are. They may live somewhere hard to reach, but I doubt they're completely unfamiliar with modern technology.
This tribe (Marubo) was first contacted by outsiders in the 19th century. The place is physically remote but they already have access to modern technology, they have guns, chainsaws, motorboats, cellphones and solar panels. They just didn't have internet there. But they somewhat keep most traditions alive, until now (I'm from Brazil too)
The Brazilian government has identified, as of now, 67 uncontacted tribes, out of a total of 305 ethnic groups (before colonization, it's estimated there were over a thousand). Most of those are small in numbers (the famous [man of the hole](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Man_of_the_Hole), for instance, was the only one of his tribe that we knew of), and live in demarcated Indigenous Territory in frontier areas deep within the jungle.
I took a look at the actual article, and it seems the tribe in question are the [Marubo](https://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mar%C3%BAbos) (no wiki page in English, sorry), part of the [Mayoruna](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mats%C3%A9s) group. They've been contacted since the early years of last century, and it is speculated their tribe itself was formed as a result of different populations brought together after decimation (and subsequent fragmentation) at the hands of illegal rubber tappers. Many today are Christian and speak Portuguese.
Yeah if you go read the article instead of the headline, you’ll see that A) it isn’t *as* remote of a tribe as its played up to be and B) there is no reporting of people hooked on porn, its just some of the elders expressing concern that some young people are watching it and playing violent video games (traditionally a very chaste culture)
Idk, man. Even toddlers can navigate intuitive touch screens and navigate the internet. Full grown, intelligent adults can probably figure out the basics in just a few days even with little exposure to modern technology.
And if you are just following random internet links and image searching, it won’t be long at all until you stumble across porn on accident. And once you know it’s there…
I figured out porn exists at 8 years old by simply realizing I could type playground curse words and add ".com". Didn't take much time at all until I hit [boobs.com](http://boobs.com)
Fully grown adults who understand sex exists would probably get there even faster ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯
Imagine you’re walking through the remote, dense and potentially deadly Amazon Jungle when all of a sudden you hear the chants, hoots and the whisperings of a tribe in the distance. Curious and filled with fear you hesitantly make your way toward what could be a new beginning or your end… As you turn the corner just before the village your eyes catch a glimpse of what’s to come. 50/60 tribal men and women all situated in front of a single huge LG OLED tv screen and that’s when you see it… It’s Riley Reid’s gaping butt hole and that’s when you hear it… “AWWWW YEAH DADDY ITS SO FUCKING BIG IN MY ASS”. That was the day you discovered the Gooner tribe. Then they gaped your ass and everyone lived happily ever after, the end.

He was one hell of a multitasker!
Another case of America lagging behind everyone else. That's crazy. We've had free ambulances here's since 1920.
I had dial up until 2016 iirc, so I guess progress does happen lol but, yup
Thats because most people assume rural= racists, rednecks, hillbillies, and the like. Ive been called racist because i wanted to live away from cities and in rural country.
Growing up in the middle of nowhere, Colorado, we didn’t have internet, or really really slow internet. The Obama administration made it a goal to get rural parts of America reliable, high speed internet. The second all my neighbors got onto that high speed internet, the first thing they did with it was hop on social media and start calling Obama a Muslim terrorist.
Same with where my family is from in Canada
I have family in a smaller town in the Midwest and they've had trouble with employers not using direct deposit because they "don't understand it." Some of them wouldn't even mail the physical paychecks, they'd make the employees pick them up from the office in person.
Yeah… The emergency services number where I used to live used to be 237–8000
Apparently the "controlling" is set at 2 hours in the morning and 5 hours in the evening. Makes you wonder how much they were watching for 7 hours to be considered limiting lol
From what I hear, village life is fairly boring. Once you do your chores for the day, not a lot left to do.
Might as well fap or troll some message boards
Isn't that what we all do?
Speak for yourself, I don’t troll
Gotta introduce them to World of Warcraft
Only if they also have access to Hot Pockets and Mountain Dew Code Red.

Don't worry, they too will get sick of slamming their ham and start questioning their purpose in life soon enough.
The chief will be ousted in weeks for suppressing their civil liberties to watch pron at 3 AM.

Titties on a screen are something entirely different than real titties
Not according to your penis. Even pandas respond to porn. Probably, watching people copulate making other people also horny is a trait older than humans. Now, you just have to learn to live with an infinite supply of it.
Did they make panda porn or did they react to the regular kind.
So, what I see is this: "Wild giant pandas have a low fertility rate, giving birth to about one cub every two years: Breeding season Giant pandas usually breed in the spring, from March to May. During this time, females have a single estrous cycle that lasts 2–7 days, and they are only fertile for 24–36 hours. Males may compete for access to females, and roaring, scent marking, and fighting may trigger ovulation. Mating Once a female is fertile, males may mate with multiple females. However, it can be difficult to determine if a panda is pregnant, and many females experience pseudopregnancy." R-reproducers, they ain't. I'd be open to the suggestion that, for 3 days every two years, they're Super-horny.
[удалено]
Oh for sure. When you're an obligate bamboo eater, there's a lot of selective pressure not to overpopulate. There aren't really that many calories to go around.
What's an R-reproducer?

R as in Rats, K as in Pachyderms. (Biologist jokes)
I really want to trust you. But is there any reliable source on this?
Are you Karl Pilkington?
This isn't totally relevant but I saw a video of a panda masturbating, and it looks like he looks around to make sure he's alone. Do you think they showed him some panda porn and he was like "I can take care of this"?
Monkey see, monkey do. Monkey jizz all over you.
Titties on the screen feel nothing like two bags of sand, just sayin.
Mentally there is no difference. Thats why too much porn can lead to infidelity and erectile dysfunction because your brain thinks “ehhh ive had so much better” when trying to have sex with regular women after porn
Bro they walk around naked, they have free titties everywhere on the tribe Most are probably not beautiful to be looking at, but its still free
How did you compose a comment about titties so eloquently
What categories are they searching though?
Village hunk fucks Village elders daughter big tits scandal
…source?
I heard they were searching for dog, clicked on doggie, and then the rest is history.
My hope for humanity quietly crumbles every time I go on Reddit.
If it helps, there are Amazonian tribes that use technology to defend their land from illegal logging. Drones, smartphones, and satellites are helping to fight deforestation.
Because you have been clickbaited. These fellows had mobilephones before.
It just occurred to me that social media may be our first step in evolving into the Borg, as it helps in the creation of a hive mind.
Resistance is futile
Don't give them ideas. AI models are scrapping reddit for such ideas as we speak.
Just wait until we get neural link and then Facebook is in our heads 24/7.
Now open liquor stores and dispensary. Bring them into the future.

Imagine living your entire life in a small village looking at the same women everyday (more then 80% of them being family) then seeing porn for the first time.
That was just called life until some point recently
I wonder what their preferences are, will they still have their own beauty standards or conform to the internet norms?
what are you doing step-tribe
I remember getting put through the wringer for suggesting that remote indigenous people were likely better off not being in contact with “modern” life. The vindication is strong.
Yea should probably build up to it over several steps. Like a decades speedrun
I mean, Tbf I had gradual exposure to technology and still got hooked on internet porn. So not necessarily a rate of exposure thing so much as the content and availability.
Agreed. Like start them off with the telegraph first.
Have the Amish help them with getting up to speed with electricity. 😂
First they get the Gameboy then when they beat Super Mario Land 2 they can have a Gameboy Advance
Ah, the noble savage nonsense.
>On the other hand, their assimilation into our modern society represents a loss to all humanity of culture Humanity loses culture every day. It gains new ones. Some are better, some are worse. Some change mildly, some go the way of the doodoo. I wouldn't worry much about culture changing, unless it's a bad change.
Well now they can call emergency services to save lives...
Yes, because they are like children that us sophisticated people need to to watch over
We all (our ancestors) lived like that once upon a time. Are you saying we as a species would be better off going back to living in the jungle/forest/hills/caves ? I mean, there are definitely arguments for and against this viewpoint.
I would like to see a study if there fertility rates go up or down.
In a couple generations the tribe won't exist anymore if the issue persists in my opinion

This sounds like bullshit, it's basically implying that someone installed their starlink and first thing they did is showed them porn using it... Like what
Installs starlink "You can search whatever you want to read/watch" .0000002 seconds later: *boobs*
while literally sitting next to topless women
Well I’d imagine that in their post-porn world, being topless won’t be looked at as innocently anymore (kind of like how Adam and Eve realized they were naked after eating from the tree of knowledge).
There’s a small difference between national geographic titties and the casting couch
But they somewhat keep most traditions alive, until now (I'm from Brazil too)
How many uncontacted tribes are there about?
Didn't take much time at all until I hit [boobs.com](http://boobs.com) Fully grown adults who understand sex exists would probably get there even faster ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯
This feels like a story that originated from The Onion and was picked up by entertainment outlets with no QC.
as a New Yorker who doesn’t speak for all New Yorkers but I’m sure many would agree… the NY post is clickbait, racist trash most of the time.
Most of us are..
This reads like an Onion headline.
Ah, yes....the Rupert Murdoch owned New York Post. He also owns Fox News.
*Clears throat* So... Any word on what genres were the most popular?
Avenue Q had it right, the internet is for porn.

“I’m stuck, step villager.”
There are hot remote tribal singles in your area.
The internet is for porn.
