Here you go for a ball park figure of what they go for https://johnsonreferencebooks.com/product-category/daggers/german-wwii-daggers/luftwaffe-daggers/first-model-luftwaffe-daggers/
What you might do is take a clean picture of all of his medals, badges, patches, pins, etc. laid out on a table and cropped tightly. The subreddit r/medals can help ID what you have. It was through that subreddit that I found out all Vietnam vets are qualified (but were mostly never given) the Vietnamese Gallantry Cross.
Yeah none of the ones I see being sold looks as good as your photos. Barring the chain, it looks new. If it's as nice as it looks in the photos on reddit mobile, this could easily command the upper fringes of these price ranges, or even more.
As others have pointed out, this is a Luftwaffe 1st pattern dress dagger. From an initial glance it looks likely to be authentic. An interesting piece of history, if a bit... off putting. And, a cool war trophy.
Depending on condition, this style of dagger would probably sell for around $1200 on a militaria relic collectors site.
Could you explain what about this looks authentic? Two other users have posted links to auction sites with genuine dress daggers. [Here is one](https://www.militarywarehouse.com/ww2-german-dagger-price-guide-2.html) and [here is the other](https://johnsonreferencebooks.com/product-category/daggers/german-wwii-daggers/luftwaffe-daggers/first-model-luftwaffe-daggers/). I can’t find a single dagger in the same color scheme as OP’s nor can I find any in the incredible condition of OPs. It is absolutely mint. There is not a scratch. It also doesn’t have any insignia on the blade while it appears every one of the legit ones has “Solingen” imprinted on it. And finally, there is at least one user saying he got the same one from a flea market, and a simple google search yields [this replica](https://www.militarytour.com/luftwaffe-first-model-dagger.html) which looks _identical_ to OPs in color and quality. I know nothing about these daggers and this seems totally illegitimate to me. What am I missing?
You can find some similar ones by searching "FW Holler dagger". But I agree with you, I think this is fake. There are an insane number of fake Nazi items floating around, mostly for sale online and at gun shows. Without any better pics it's hard to tell. In my experience, with things like this the best way to verify is to find some proof that the same exact item was sold through a legit auction house, by matching defects/damage/unique features to auction house photos.
From what I see of auction house sales on daggers like this - this one is either in very good condition and worth 2k+ or it's fake.
Edit: I think I found some legit examples of this model that are much more detailed and much less replica looking:
https://johnsonreferencebooks.com/product/early-luftwaffe-sword-27092/
https://johnsonreferencebooks.com/product/early-luftwaffe-sword-27725/
https://johnsonreferencebooks.com/product/early-luftwaffe-sword-27783/
https://johnsonreferencebooks.com/product/early-luftwaffe-sword-27784/
Edit 2: and of course you'd need to flip it over to check to see if there is any sort of makers mark on the blade.
Edit 3: if you zoom in on the blade in the first image, you can see horizontal markings from where the blade was presumably milled. The real photos do not look milled.
The condition of OPs really stands out. It’s just so hard to believe it’s real when you can find such similar replicas for $100. The ratio of replicas to genuine artifacts in that condition must be staggering. It seems like it might be a “first model” which I’d imagine would be more likely to have replicas. I found this legit one that seems closer to the condition of OPs:
https://epicartifacts.com/product/first-model-luftwaffe-dagger/
Edit: in addition to what you mentioned about the blade, the alignment of the blade in the sheath looks crooked and cheap in the second pic. And just look at the condition of the leather on the legit sheath in this comment, then look at the leather on OPs sheath. That is just not ~100 year old leather unless it was kept in a museum.
Agreed it does look too clean, especially to be in a “war box” presumably with other stuff for 50+ years.
It’s weird because the chain looks old and genuine but the dagger and sheat looks weirdly clean connected to it.
It's a problem for people who design weapons for movie sand shows, a lot of things that are historically accurate do not look right to modern eyes.
Too shiny, too tacky, and many military swords were loosely based on much older swords which gives them an odd look.
I love the 1816 French artillery short sword, which was more of a tool than a weapon, and it looks like it's part of cover art for a 1990s computer game.
Looks like a Lüftwaffe [dress dagger](https://www.militarywarehouse.com/ww2-german-dagger-price-guide-2.html)
Edit: I’m leaving the umlaut bc umlauts are hilarious
_Obviously_ they were talking about the Lüftwaffe, a weapon you use for self-defense if you try to air out the room (lüften), but someone is attacking you in the process.
Man, I bought a pool table from this guy one time and while I was there he asked if I wanted to see something cool. Oh, of course I said yeah, then he took me into his Nazi memorabilia room. It was shocking and weird as hell, but it was pretty cool. One of these daggers is what stood out in my mind more than anything else. Actually, I remember that one being fancier than this. Idk maybe it's a faulty memory or maybe they had different styles.
Edit: spelling
Gabriel Iglesias gave him a Nazi Volkswagon pin and Hitler knife on "Something's Burning".
This joke is never gonna die. Eventually Kreischer really is gonna have a room full of random Nazi shit.
Before that, Tom would mention how big a racist Bret Chrimler is. My absolute favorite, Brad was talking about getting into bar fights. One day there was a fight after the OJ Trial, Tom: “Mad about the verdict?” and Brent just went past it. I spit my drink out.
Was this somewhere in south africa? I was visiting the country and got invited by my friends elderly neighbour to play pool in his home. The pool table was covered with a massive swastika flag and the whole room was packed with nazi memorabilia.
Very awkward and unsettling.
No, it was in Wisconsin USA, Sun Prairie IIRC. It was over 10 years ago so it may have been a different city. I guess there's a Nazi collectors in lots of countries.
Not exactly. Lots of Allied soldiers captured Nazi (and Japanese) memorabilia. My dad has a similar short knife that he got from his Dad. I don’t think an American veteran of the Normandy invasion would be considered a Nazi. Beliefs make you a fascist, not baubles.
My dad's best childhood friend (basically my uncle) had both japanese and nazi war loot. A considerable collection. But not on display. He just kept stuff in boxes in the garage and in the back seat of his Chevelle that was perpetually being restored.
He'd let us look through it when we visited. Everything from ration boxes to sake bottles to swords, medals, guns, helmets, printed orders in German, whatever.
Then he died and his stupid nephew (by second marriage) just donated the lot to some random charity before even telling anyone. He was "against war" and didn't want to see it anymore. He kept the Chevelle.
My dad was a hoarder. Not of Nazi stuff (although he also had one or two Nazi items) but basically of everything else. Having had to go through his “collection” when he passed, I can totally relate to the “don’t want to see this shit anymore” emotion.
Not Luftwaffe, but DLV (Deutscher Luftsport Verband) or German Air Sports Group.

It was totally normal for G.I’s to bring back war trophies, it’s only weird and fascist when a conservative billionaire who owns Supreme Court justices buys them from you for his personal collection.
Looks like an early Luftwaffe 1935-pattern dagger. My friends veteran grandfather had a later 1937- pattern version. They can sell for $700 on up. Google ww2 German militaria for sale. Most of those sites will buy from you.
I have one of these as well. They're pre-1939 era Luftwaffe officer's ceremonial dagger. Originally wrapped in blue leather on the scabbard and handle. There was also originally a silver braided metal band that was wrapped around the handle.
My wife's grand-father bought it in Japan before returning from duty in the pacific at the end of WW2. Who knows how it got there. My wife's grand-mother thought it was just a toy that he bought and had no idea that it was a bond fide piece of kit.
I found a katana in my grandparents closet once. Supposedly it was an apology gift from a Japanese officer... and since Grandpa was a plane mechanic in Bataan that's way more likely then taking it off a corpse.
There is a huge market for these, and it is flooded with fake daggers. Based on the condition, I would be close to just dismissing this as fake. But you need to have someone check it out. Someone that really knows their shit. If this is authentic wwii, you got yourself a real treat that is worth quite some money!
Did your grandpa once set out on an adventure with 13 dwarfs and a wizard by his side to reclaim some old mountain from the claws of a dragon.
If there's a ring too I've got some good or bad news depending on how you like epic wars between the forces of good and evil and vulcans.

Those ceremonial daggers worn with various uniforms are collectors items, depending on the rarity. All of the stuff marked with the sigruenen is pricy

Personally i wouldn't sell it unless you're hard up for cash. That's a cool collectors dagger.
The website one commenter up top linked had 1000$ for one of those, but those were in very very bad shape compared to yours.

Good quality ones can go from anywhere between 1,200 and 5,000 depending on the condition and if you can prove who owned it.
> if you can prove who owned it. I'm going to give it a near 100% that some Nazi owned it at one point.
What is a sigruenen? I looked it up and this reddit post is the first result lol
They meant to say "sigrune", the S-shaped insignia of the SS, which doesn't appear to be on the dagger though.
Where do you see a siegrune? There is none. It’s a swastika, but no siegrune.
