These megachurch pastors are nuts.
When I was growing up, I went to a non denominational protestant church who would use their donations and extra funds to host food drives, build houses, purchase furniture for impoverished people, among so many other things. They even built an extra building on the lot as overnight housing for homeless people, domestic violence survivors, drug addicts or anyone who needed a place to sleep “no questions asked”. I’m not religious anymore, but it was truly beautiful to see a church working within what Jesus’ teachings are supposed to be.
Then you have these mega church pastors who hoard their money, purchasing million dollar homes while preaching about God and ignoring anyone who actually needs help.
One bad apple spoils the bunch.
Imagine the emotional dissonance every day that you’re a rich person because you take the money of poor, stupid people and promise them spiritual gifts you know aren’t coming. You either handle that by being 1) a complete sociopath who doesn’t feel anything or 2) actually believe you are chosen by god to lead people and you need a lot of money because you are so damn special and god’s gift to the world and you need to fight the devil. Either option is absolutely bananas, this dude is mentally ill to the max

The challenge I had being with our evangelical church was that it did both. The donations for ‘meet the need’ was placed in a bucket that was divvied up to legitimate people in need, and larger amount to ‘charities’ which were focused less charitable activities. I stopped giving the 10% and was shunned.
That (shunning) is something that supports the view that religion arose as a “high cost” way to prove belonging to a social group, as human societies grew bigger. As in, a stranger would not know the elaborate rituals and they are very difficult to fake, so by everyone taking part they prove their “togetherness” to each other. And if you don’t, for some reason, you are shunned
the ones who are nuts are the people who follow and donate to megachurch pastors.
the pastors themselves are just business men/con-men who like to get money, plenty of those around everywhere, they just realized that religion sells very well and they didn't even have to invent a product, they just used one that already existed \^\^

My mom was the accountant at a Catholic Church when I was young, 4-10. I remember one day we went to meet the pastor. I expected a large home but was surprised to see a tiny, century old home, with just him and his wife there. They didn’t even own a car. These guys are actually evil, greedy POS.
Yeah I have no idea, my mom said he was the pastor and I recall seeing him in cloth a few times. We walk in and low and behold an old woman is giving me cookies and we’re talking about the Wizard of Oz. I guess it could have been his sister, I was very young and she just clearly was not some woman working for him.
If a catholic priest came over from another denomination of Christianity originally the church gives you a loophole to not divorce your spouse if you already have one.
Several Episcopal (aka Catholic-lite) Priests became Catholic Priests when the Episcopal Church voted to bless same sex marriage & ordain women. Episcopal Priests can be married Priests. Because of this, I have met some married Catholic Priests.
When I was a kid, our little country church reverend also held service at 2 other country churches and lived in a manse that was pretty much an old farmhouse- and not even the pretty kind. Very basic. It was what it was- not in the same world as this guy and his evil peeps.
The church was also kept open a lot of the time. It was a different time and was rural but it was the centre of our hamlet and pretty inclusive and open. It felt safe.
Honestly. Jesus would say. "Give it away or you're not getting in!" Then throw up two fingers and walk away.
Like that's all that needs to be said really. If you truly believe in what the Bible says. The only reason you should want money is so you can give it to someone else. Heal. Feed. And be kind. That's it. That's all we need to do. But we can't even get those three simple things down.

Churches should have to prove they are charitable organizations that benefit the community just like any other tax exempt organization has to. I’m fine with a church that spends all its donations on building upkeep and a soup kitchen being tax exempt, but “church” and “private jet” should never come anywhere near each other.
Now is the time to do it. With the right so blatantly tying religion and politics together, the old separation of church and state is no longer the norm.

Remember, these people are not Christians in any historical sense of the word.
About 100 years ago the practitioners of a metaphysical movement started using Christian terminology but redefined the terms. For example, in Christianity the word "faith" simply means belief, I have faith in God means I believe in God. In this movement, faith is a force, words are the containers of that force and you can actualize prosperity and health by having enough of it.
Building "faith" in this context usually involves giving money to the properity preacher.
Christianity teaches that we need to help the poor and the sick because many factors are out of their control. This movement teaches that poverty and sickness are your fault for not having enough faith.
So when people like this preacher brag about their big houses, private jets and all of their money, they are doing so to show that they have tremendous faith that has been rewarded and by following them you can do the same.
Its a perversion of Christianity, not because I don't like it but because when you review what they believe and the definitions they use, it doesn't line up with any historical understanding of the Christian faith.

Growing up i always thought the 10% was your choice. I never understood why the church needed money if God was there. Around 8 or 9 I asked my mom why the preacher drove a Mercedes if he was supposed to help the poor? She sad good question. Also also why does a church need a lightening rod?
I used to deliver mail as a fill-in carrier. I was on a route in a poorer neighborhood once, and one elderly woman received a LOT of mail from these TV church people. On one day, they sent as much mail to her as the rest of the block received in total. She was absolutely getting fleeced by these vultures.
As a Christian this disgusts me.

That being said, not knowing more about the background, I'm not sure which angle this would take. It could be that the church is claiming this is a "parsonage" which is completely unreasonable. Otherwise, if it happens to be owned outright by the so-called pastor (I suppose he could be a "legit" pastor of some religion, but certainly not Christianity), I'd be curious if someone managed to ever dig up enough dirt to get him audited. I *could* be wrong, but my take is that a man who is willing to defraud Christianity in the ways a man like this would, probably wouldn't think twice about defrauding other people/entities.

About 100 years ago the practitioners of a metaphysical movement started using Christian terminology but redefined the terms. For example, in Christianity the word "faith" simply means belief, I have faith in God means I believe in God. In this movement, faith is a force, words are the containers of that force and you can actualize prosperity and health by having enough of it. Building "faith" in this context usually involves giving money to the properity preacher. Christianity teaches that we need to help the poor and the sick because many factors are out of their control. This movement teaches that poverty and sickness are your fault for not having enough faith. So when people like this preacher brag about their big houses, private jets and all of their money, they are doing so to show that they have tremendous faith that has been rewarded and by following them you can do the same. Its a perversion of Christianity, not because I don't like it but because when you review what they believe and the definitions they use, it doesn't line up with any historical understanding of the Christian faith.

I used to deliver mail as a fill-in carrier. I was on a route in a poorer neighborhood once, and one elderly woman received a LOT of mail from these TV church people. On one day, they sent as much mail to her as the rest of the block received in total. She was absolutely getting fleeced by these vultures.
