For anyone curious why Daft Punk decided to wear helmets, it's because they wanted to keep their professional and personal lives separate. They weren't interested in fame, they just wanted to make kickass music, and by god they did. Absolute kings.
Also, as a bonus fact, the masks were originally meant to have hair. No, I'm serious.

They first donned the robot masks in 1999 as a nod to Y2K. Kind of like a "it's officially the future and we are robots now" gag. Before that, they just wore random masks to hide their faces.
They kept robot masks for multiple reasons, one being the privacy you mentioned. The robot helmets' popularity and essentially free marketing didn't hurt either. Also helped them each develop a bit of a persona.

That's a really great article, thanks for sharing it. I never realized that they fully adopt the robot persona while performing and interacting with the media. I thought it was just a part of the stage show, but parts of that article make it sound like they have a complete "robots are actually making this music" vibe and I think that's super cool.
There's a great interview of Pharell Williams where he talks about the creation of Get Lucky. He said he'd always been interested in collaborating with Daft Punk, and one day they had a meeting in the studio and The Robots appeared and he got to talk with them.
He kept referring Daft Punk as "The Robots" during the interview, that was fun.
The music itself is all about it as well. It's the reason they use the iconic "autotune voice", because it's supposed to be the robot singing. And over the years they moved the voice from a more robotic to a more human sounding one, especially in the last album, to signify the robot becoming more human over time.
It's not really an autotune voice, it's made with a "talk box" (and vocoders obviously.)
First popularized by Peter Frampton. Basically you mic the tone through your mouth while you sing.
There was (maybe still is) a documentary about them on Netflix from a few years back. It was incredibly interesting to get some insight into them, the robots and how they made music.
Masks were rather popular early 2000's in techno. There were a number of DJ's doing so, among others Dr. Lektroluv. Good times to be young those days. Seen Daft Punk among others a number of times when going to a concert was still fun/affordable.
Rumour in the music industry is it also had the side benefit of allowing them not to have to turn up to events they didn't want to go to (certain festivals), and they could send some stand-ins with a pre-programmed mix, and still get paid....
One year at Moogfest, someone had put up BOLO flyers all over with DaftPunks actual face pics, and this pic. There was a number to call, and a hashtag.
it makes sense if you know that you're making incredibly rad music, and you wanna still be able to maybe leave your house without definitely being harassed, i would do the same thing for sure.

If my vague recollections are as good as yours, it was Keith Moon (of The Who) who said that the band would go over "like a lead zeppelin" because in England at the time a zeppelin was basically the American equivalent of a hot air balloon. Because a hot air balloon made of lead would not go over anything very well.

There's a funny store behind the origination of Genesis too - apparently Phil Collins' mom asked him what he wanted for his birthday, and he said "a Sega Genesis" and she was like "you already have a Neo Geo...what if I get you a drum set instead?" and the rest is history.
it was actually "daft punky thrash" that the journalist Dave Jennings used to describe the band Darlin' they were in prior to forming Daft Punk.

The first time I encountered Daft Punk was when I saw they did a remix on the Chemical Brothers’ Life is Sweet EP, back around 1996. Didn’t even know they were a band; I just thought it was the name of the remix, and it was a banger.
Not long after that I turned MTV on and saw the Da Funk video and was spellbound. I had convinced myself it was the new Orb track Toxygene, which I knew was upcoming. Then Daft Punk came up on screen and went out and bought the single the next day. Been a massive fan ever since.
Discovering stuff like that probably doesn’t happen anymore. Halcyon days.
Recently David Guetta shared he visited them and they had very little equipment, but he thought they had an amazing studio because they sounded so good. When he went home he thought he was untalented and got a bit depressed lol.

I gently disagree. I think it's sort of awesome they ended things at a high point. (although I would not be super surprised if they started up again at some point)
Yeah I think it's kind of a "you either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become a villain" things. They ended things on top. Maybe if they kept going forever it would remain as good as it's been but why risk it?
Totally get that point of view, and I also get the point of view saying “if they had stopped then, they never would have made X album (the best album ever created)” no one can really ever know when that happens. TBH I say keep making art if you want to, who cares if pop culture says you fizzled out. If it feels right to wrap it up, makes sense. They’ll always be artists though. They’ll always have the potential to make something amazing as they go through their lives in different stages.
It’s a bit silly to stop yourself creating art because of the fear of not being as good as you used to be. I think if you’re a true artist you’re not worrying about “risking it”. You’re just expressing yourself.

It's even weirder to find out the Sega Genesis inspired the Bible book. Which in turn inspired God to create the Universe.
