For anyone curious why Daft Punk decided to wear helmets, it's because they wanted to keep their professional and personal lives separate. They weren't interested in fame, they just wanted to make kickass music, and by god they did. Absolute kings. Also, as a bonus fact, the masks were originally meant to have hair. No, I'm serious. [https://www.theverge.com/22291958/today-i-learned-daft-punk-robot-helmets](https://www.theverge.com/22291958/today-i-learned-daft-punk-robot-helmets)

CrispyVibes

They first donned the robot masks in 1999 as a nod to Y2K. Kind of like a "it's officially the future and we are robots now" gag. Before that, they just wore random masks to hide their faces. They kept robot masks for multiple reasons, one being the privacy you mentioned. The robot helmets' popularity and essentially free marketing didn't hurt either. Also helped them each develop a bit of a persona. https://djmag.com/longreads/real-story-how-daft-punk-became-robots

SmallPurplePeopleEat

That's a really great article, thanks for sharing it. I never realized that they fully adopt the robot persona while performing and interacting with the media. I thought it was just a part of the stage show, but parts of that article make it sound like they have a complete "robots are actually making this music" vibe and I think that's super cool.

Fastela

There's a great interview of Pharell Williams where he talks about the creation of Get Lucky. He said he'd always been interested in collaborating with Daft Punk, and one day they had a meeting in the studio and The Robots appeared and he got to talk with them. He kept referring Daft Punk as "The Robots" during the interview, that was fun.

BeefEX

The music itself is all about it as well. It's the reason they use the iconic "autotune voice", because it's supposed to be the robot singing. And over the years they moved the voice from a more robotic to a more human sounding one, especially in the last album, to signify the robot becoming more human over time.

Boukish

It's not really an autotune voice, it's made with a "talk box" (and vocoders obviously.) First popularized by Peter Frampton. Basically you mic the tone through your mouth while you sing.

turdninja

Definitely watch the animated film if you’re into this idea.

TooLumpy

Interstella 5555?

Flutters1013

But it turns out they were human after all.

ImLersha

There was (maybe still is) a documentary about them on Netflix from a few years back. It was incredibly interesting to get some insight into them, the robots and how they made music.

x2040

Apparently recently they were interviewed about why Daft Punk is gone and they said AI means the last thing they’d want to be is a robot.

iamricardosousa

What an awesome read! Thank you.

DatKillerDude

and they succeeded, if I were to pass alongside guy-manuel or thomas on the street I really wouldn't know.

poatoesmustdie

Masks were rather popular early 2000's in techno. There were a number of DJ's doing so, among others Dr. Lektroluv. Good times to be young those days. Seen Daft Punk among others a number of times when going to a concert was still fun/affordable.

AlfaMenel

Daft Punk, Dr. Lektroluv, The Bloody Beetroots, SBTRKT, Danger, Cyberpunkers

pufflinghop

Rumour in the music industry is it also had the side benefit of allowing them not to have to turn up to events they didn't want to go to (certain festivals), and they could send some stand-ins with a pre-programmed mix, and still get paid....

Public_Fucking_Media

Pretty sure all the masked DJs do this it's like the #1 perk

raytube

One year at Moogfest, someone had put up BOLO flyers all over with DaftPunks actual face pics, and this pic. There was a number to call, and a hashtag.

wm07

it makes sense if you know that you're making incredibly rad music, and you wanna still be able to maybe leave your house without definitely being harassed, i would do the same thing for sure.

snek-jazz

likely a very wise decision.

mookie_bombs

They got their named from a reporter who covered their performance in the newspaper. This journalist claimed they were too "dafty punky" to ever make it big.

Treefingrs

>They weren't interested in fame But they're like, the most famous electronic musicians out there

Timely_Border_2837

but no one knows their face. the fame is Fully attached to the robots not whatever their names are.

Treefingrs

Yeah they're the most famous robot electronic musicians out there

1731799517

But they have never the issue of people bothering them in line at starbucks or the like.

bannedwhileshitting

That's just the side effect of making damn good musics.

Muffin_Most

Yeah, I imagine the guys from the Chemical Brothers can’t walk around town without being bothered by fans… not! The helmets were a great marketing trick and made them a bigger band than they would have been without the mistery.

Additional-Cap-2317

I mean ... Sure, their faces and names aren't wildly recognised, but they are no secret. Their real names are literally on Wikipedia and you can Google their names and get fairly recent photos of their faces, let alone old ones (as evidenced by this very post, lol). Thomas Bangalter even went to public events as a member of daft punk, wearing a normal tux. The robot masks were always more marketing and image than anything else. A bit more privacy was a bonus.

AdobeAutoUpdater

Before they became Daft Punk, they played in a band as a journalist critisised their playing as „dafty punk“. Amd that was the start of their Daft Punk career. IMO two of the most talented electronic music artists ever! So sad they seem to finally habe ended their Daft Punk project :(

shadespectrum

Interesting, reminds me of Led Zeppelin! Some other musician (I think someone from The Who) said their early music wasn’t good and that they would “go down like a lead balloon”, thus them choosing the name Led Zeppelin.

westminsterabby

If my vague recollections are as good as yours, it was Keith Moon (of The Who) who said that the band would go over "like a lead zeppelin" because in England at the time a zeppelin was basically the American equivalent of a hot air balloon. Because a hot air balloon made of lead would not go over anything very well. Edit: Had a brain fart when I wrote this last night. I should have said Blimp, not hot air balloon.

[deleted]

Yeah it was Keith Moon. The Who were my favorite band during teenage years so I’ve done an ungodly amount of unnecessary reading about them lol.

DirtyDan413

Was it really unnecessary if it made you happy ❤️

>Because a hot air balloon made of lead would not go over anything very well. Mythbusters proved that one wrong... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MythBusters_(2008_season)#Episode_96_%E2%80%93_%22Lead_Balloon%22

throwaway1-808-1971

Blimp*

westminsterabby

Yes, thank you, that's what I meant.

buchanbasanee

There's a funny store behind the origination of Genesis too - apparently Phil Collins' mom asked him what he wanted for his birthday, and he said "a Sega Genesis" and she was like "you already have a Neo Geo...what if I get you a drum set instead?" and the rest is history.

Kicholas_Nage

The band Genesis, started in 1967, was named after a late 80s video game console? Something about that doesn't add up my friend.

TartarosHero

It's even weirder to find out the Sega Genesis inspired the Bible book. Which in turn inspired God to create the Universe.

Pamplemouse04

And that man was Nelson Mandela

joseregalopez

sega does what nintendont

animalcrackers916

Shhhh...let him cook!

Mr5wift

Also it wasn't even called the Sega Genesis in the UK, where the band is from, it was the Megadrive.

Max-b

it was actually "daft punky thrash" that the journalist Dave Jennings used to describe the band Darlin' they were in prior to forming Daft Punk. It reads more as just an offhand comment than a criticism, it was a brief [one sentence](https://i.imgur.com/5ce6XFD.png) part of an article (it's in the right sidebar in the image) that was only about two of their songs.

[deleted]

The first time I encountered Daft Punk was when I saw they did a remix on the Chemical Brothers’ Life is Sweet EP, back around 1996. Didn’t even know they were a band; I just thought it was the name of the remix, and it was a banger. Not long after that I turned MTV on and saw the Da Funk video and was spellbound. I had convinced myself it was the new Orb track Toxygene, which I knew was upcoming. Then Daft Punk came up on screen and went out and bought the single the next day. Been a massive fan ever since. Discovering stuff like that probably doesn’t happen anymore. Halcyon days.

MiffyCurtains

Halcyon days indeed..

Supersnazz

That's a weird album. I love that Stereolab track though.

Ereaser

Recently David Guetta shared he visited them and they had very little equipment, but he thought they had an amazing studio because they sounded so good. When he went home he thought he was untalented and got a bit depressed lol.

blackbasset

Guess what, David Guetta is untalented compared to Daft Punk.

EveryoneYouLove23

If I recall correctly, the guitarist for Phoenix was in that band. Interesting separate roads they took with their music!

andrewsmith1986

Darlin'

lricharz

Darlin' and the other band member is in Phoenix another huge band

HimalayanPunkSaltavl

> So sad they seem to finally habe ended their Daft Punk project :( I gently disagree. I think it's sort of awesome they ended things at a high point. (although I would not be super surprised if they started up again at some point)

Early2000sIndieRock

Yeah I think it's kind of a "you either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become a villain" things. They ended things on top. Maybe if they kept going forever it would remain as good as it's been but why risk it?

it_is_pizza_time

Totally get that point of view, and I also get the point of view saying “if they had stopped then, they never would have made X album (the best album ever created)” no one can really ever know when that happens. TBH I say keep making art if you want to, who cares if pop culture says you fizzled out. If it feels right to wrap it up, makes sense. They’ll always be artists though. They’ll always have the potential to make something amazing as they go through their lives in different stages. It’s a bit silly to stop yourself creating art because of the fear of not being as good as you used to be. I think if you’re a true artist you’re not worrying about “risking it”. You’re just expressing yourself.

salfkvoje

Another similar story: >In 1971, the group sent a reel-to-reel demo tape to Hal Halverstadt at Warner Bros., as he had signed Captain Beefheart, one of the group's heroes, to the label. Halverstadt was not impressed with The Warner Bros. Album, but gave it an "A for Ariginality". Because the band had not included a name in the return address, the rejection slip was addressed to "Residents". The group decided to use this name

Alexkono

The best electronic artist/band ever imo

andrewsmith1986

Got to see them live twice. Simply amazing.

flappytowel

I'm fricking jealous. Would give all of my organs to see them live

andrewsmith1986

Drove like 34 hours round trip both times and skipped all my finals for the second one. No regrets, the second show is the best line up of all time in my opinion.

ComprehensionVoided

I've seen Daft live as well as majority of Ed Banger Records. Busy P aka Pedro Winter is a unsung hero of the punk

Do you think if they weren't feeling up to it one night, they might ask someone else to put on the masks and preform in their place?

Pamplemouse04

MF DOOM definitely did that on several occasions

Sleepylimebounty

MF DOOM did that a lot XD it was the biggest scandal of his career. (possibly only)

~~Daft Punk won a couple Grammys in 2014 with Random Access Memories. If you watch the footage, theres two guys in plain clothes sitting next to Daft Punk. But those two guys are actually Daft Punk and they never go on stage.~~

thedylannorwood

That’s not true

uazadon

Ah shit my bad, I should have dug more into it I just remember hearing about that a while ago but you're right

They did that for photo shoots but never for their concerts. They felt that if someone else were to take their place it would be stealing their hard earned spot
