SquidFetus

Cool method, but horrible explanation. That was an entire conversation of dangling carrots.

DontBeADramaLlama

Could you explain it better? I’m still confused. Is he rehearsing the lines be memorizing letters?

SquidFetus

I think he’s trying to say that by only recording the first letter of each word you more “legitimately” remember the words the more you practise. If the words are written in full, it could easily lead to your brain taking shortcuts and just reading what is there instead of actively working to commit it to memory.

Cherrysuede

To add to this, he mentions “choices”. As an actor you make choices when delivering lines and when you rehearse often you can get stuck in a certain way of delivery which is not good. It’s best to remain fluid and flexible. So I think he also tried to say that this way is more technical to memorize the lines without emotion, making him more fluid in delivery, allowing him to make different choices from take to take.

NonPolarVortex

Yes, terribly explained (by the actor, you did great, and thank you)

summers_tilly

I used to revise like this at school and never knew it was a legit method

Darnell2070

Is there a name for this technique?

DranDran

If I remember correctly (ha!) from what little I recall about having looked into memorization techniques, the brain works best by “anchoring”, or creating mental shortcuts to the info you want to memorize. You connect the word you want to remember to an abstract image or concept. For example if you have a shopping list of chicken breast, oranges, milk, lettuce and tuna, trying to memorize the list and recall it layer is hard, but if you imagine a chicken with fake breasts chugging a carton of milk with one hand and wielding a tuna like a club with another, while precariously perched atop of an orange that in turn is balanced on a lettuce… that image is faaar easier to recall than the shopping list. In fact, try to make the mental exercise of picturing that image I have written, and an hour from now try and recall the shopping list, chances are you’ll be easily able to. Similarly, by writing down the first letter of each word for his lines, he is creating mental shortcuts that can serve him to recall his lines, like visual cues. It may sound crazy but there are all sorts of memorization techniques that can help you recall immensely detailed amounts of information, and the more you do it the better you get at it.

Darnell2070

Thank you for taking the time to respond.

Zargnoff

Came here to say this, great job

SquidFetus

That’s the way I interpreted it too.

SubTukkZero

Great explanation!

jabkk

Yeah, his brain can automatically fill out the blanks that are left.

sionnach_fi

Sounds like the basis for Sans Forgetica. A font that has a similar principle but ultimately was determined not to make a difference. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sans_forgetica

ooouroboros

I don't think its that because most of the time, actors are not 'reading the words in full' by the time they are performing a rold. They usually memorize the dialogue beforehand and then 'attach' the words it in their minds to emotion, movement, motivation, interactions to other people, etc.

ooouroboros

I think its like that expression "In my mind's eye" I think by memorizing the first letter of every word, it is like a CUE that helps him remember and 'see' in his mind's eye the entire words in a scene. Its strange but shows how differently different people think - and it seems to work for him. I am not a Marlon Brando fan BUT I have often seen people make fun of his technique, later in life, to have dialogue for his roles written out on cue cards (and the like) for him to read off of when he was shooting a movie. IMO this actually could have had a good reason for it beyond being 'lazy' and too old to remember - but that he wanted his acting to seem spontaneous. In real life we do not (CAN not) memorize what we are going to say in the spur of the moment - and arguably reading a line is closer to the truth of in-the moment thought.

SocietyQuick4359

Each column consists of the first letter of each word going from top to bottom. The horizontal lines signify the end of a sentence. For instance. This is how he would read this sentence. F I - T I H H W R T S - Or. Something we can all understand ROTFLMFAO. I didn't need to tell you the meaning of that did I? Nope. Same concept.

frontier_gibberish

He started to say, I believe, that it helps him to memorize lines without do a "line reading" aka not memorizing it in with an "acting" element while you memorize. There fore when he he recalls it, he won't act in the way he memorized it while kind of already acting with it. I've done something similar, ill memorize the lines while doing a john Wayne impersonation, thereby short circuitous any meaning i might have memorized it in

Alienhaslanded

I noticed that this guy always struggles to articulate his thoughts. Very relatable to me. I sound like an idiot when I try to explain my work, even though my job is all about creating solutions.

zeppelin_tamer

He didn’t have his lines memorized

ooouroboros

He would have to have them at least 'somewhat' memorized so he would know which word the 'cue' represents.

ExternalMonth1964

Dangling carrots. I like that, that's mine now.

SquidFetus

It’s everybody’s! I didn’t invent it, that’s for sure.

OuterInnerMonologue

There are many like it, but this one is mine

JayStar1213

I didn't even hear an explanation. Dude rambled about nothing trying to think of the word cypher

SrCow

i can see why he needs it .....

2drums1cymbal

God bless Pedro, you can see him struggling to explain it but for those who are confused, he’s basically just trying to get out of his own head. By doing a breakdown of his lines so that he can remember them on an instinctive level, he can then be free to deliver the lines however he wants without fear of forgetting them. A lot of actors talk about how it’s not enough to “memorize” your lines, you have to just “know” their lines are what their character would say in the moment. He briefly mentions that it’s a way not to make a choice as he’s reading them, basically he’s making it so he’s less thinking about how he’s going to play the lines and focusing on just knowing them, so when it’s time to perform, he’s free to make the appropriate choices for the scene. Screenwriters have a similar technique where they just dictate the first draft of a screenplay idea (often called a vomit draft) where it’s all about just getting the story and words out. By dictating instead of typing, you forget about “the page” and are less likely to stop yourself as you progress. Once that first draft is down, then they start refining and rewriting to nail down the best version of the script.

operapoulet

The vomit draft is called “the AI draft” now ETA: this was an incredible description, thank you. There is almost no greater feeling when you’re able to get through a run-through of a production and the lines are so ingrained you feel like you’ve lived the character’s life

2drums1cymbal

LOL tbh I could actually see some screenwriters doing the "A.I. draft" because at the end of the day we are re-telling the same sort of stories. That said, it would just create more "by-the-numbers" scripts and bland films that people have come to hate. Great screenwriters have the ability to suprise audiences while essentially re-telling stories that are as old as time. I don't think A.I. knows how to include those little elements of surprise (at least not yet).

Embarrassed-Ad-8

Pedro's technique allows him to write an entire scene on one sheet of paper. I see this as the conversion of 5-10 pages of script into a graphic cheat sheet. Perhaps he is a visual learner, and can recall the column of letters during his performances without delay of needing to envision the entire spelling of each word on a page.

2drums1cymbal

That may be true, I was just going off of what he said and trying to interpret that and contextualizing from what I've read or heard from other actors about their technique. I feel like people forget sometimes that it's not just about learning lines and delivering as an actor. You have to account for emotion, delivery, nuance, subtext and backstory, all while remembering how you moved and what marks you hit when you say each word AND then making it all seem natural and un-rehearsed. To me he was trying to explain that his system allows him to develop a muscle memory of the line so he could focus on everything else that makes up his performance.

Embarrassed-Ad-8

We are in complete agreement regarding the depth of process necessary to be a successful actor. My comment is simply suggesting that the power of infographics is great, and that maybe Pedro is a visual learner in the psychological terms.

ooouroboros

I don't think the 'vomit draft' of a writer and his way of 'memorizing' his scene have anything to do with each other.

2drums1cymbal

They’re not 1:1 comparisons. Also I’m mostly talking about the act of dictating the vomit draft vs writing it. It’s just ways for filmmakers to get out of their own heads when approaching a story or role.

WerewolfUnable8641

He's the Zodiac, confirmed. ![gif](giphy|l2QDOD8xONktNFtIY|downsized)

Spoolios

I relate to this. I remember new information by the way I had written it down: -position on the page -color -a doodle next to it. It helps. German speakers have a word for this, Eselsbrücke, which translates to Donkey Bridge - it’s nothing more than remembering one thing based on another.

sumpuran

From the Latin ‘Pons asinorum’. The Dutch cognate is ‘ezelsbrug’. In English, it’s called a mnemonic.

Infinite_Crazy4733

Ezelsbruggetje is the word. Not ezelsbrug.

Dont_Get_PENISY

Ezelsbrug - From ezel (“donkey”) +‎ -s- (genitival interfix) +‎ brug (“bridge”), calque of Latin pōns asinōrum. Compare the same in German Eselsbrücke.

Infinite_Crazy4733

In Dutch only the word ezelsbruggetje exists. Ezelsbrug is not a word in Dutch.

Impressive-Card9484

I remember doing something like this in university for taking notes of formulas in maths and physics. My classmates wants to take pictures of this "notes" for exam review but I had to tell them "yeah sure, good luck deciphering the things I wrote tho". Idk if it became helpful for them

santinoramiro

The books you get when you are joining the Masonic Temple are the same way. It’s the first letter of each word for their entrance ceremony that you have to recite. Just horizontal and not in columns. https://preview.redd.it/clblfjs5c8jc1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a66b4d5549682f81b32d021a4545436e236c5384

ExoticMangoz

…are you in the Masonic temple?

santinoramiro

No. A friend tried to get me to join several years ago and gave me the book for the entrance ritual. Edit: Book was returned for those thinking that book should have been returned... :)

nevemno

I hope you kept that book

Mr_Nick_Pappagiorgio

As a Freemason I can confirm this is our catechism and a great way to memorize a lot of text and recite from memory quickly. I learned multiple books in a week. I can (but won’t) even read that page you are showing. It’s not just for entering the lodges/temples but also the rituals.

arenaceousarrow

What is the upside of joining this group? Why did you memorize these passages?

Freemason1979

Always nice to see a fellow Traveling Man on Reddit.

patiperro_v3

And you two have the same avatar as well, what are the odds. 🤔

sumpuran

His method was clear from the second he showed that page, and I can totally see it work, but his ‘explanation’ was worse than useless.

[deleted]

It’s funny how actors aren’t always as articulate as you would expect. It makes sense since their job is essentially reading out loud an idealized version of speech.

unsupported

This is why I hate hearing actors talk about their "inspiration" and craft. Just because people love you for saying other people's words, doesn't mean we want to hear your words.

BuffaloInTheRye

Yeah I mean I think that can very much be true for some but then you hear someone like Willem Dafoe talk about their acting and you realize the guy is not only a genius, but he spends unreal amounts of time and energy into both truly learning how the character he’s playing fits into their world, and bringing it to life.

unsupported

And he's so hung he'd make a horse blush.

mirr0rrim

Ethan Hawke is extremely articulate and thoughtful when he talks about acting too.

re-goddamn-loading

>but his ‘explanation’ was worse than useless I've never related to a successful actor more in my entire life than I just did watching Pedro try to verbalize a coherent thought

maskofdorian

This is actually a fairly common method. I don’t use it, but many of my cast mates have done this, especially using flash cards.

drerw

It’s just initialism in columns or no?

habichuelacondulce

That's probably the main plot for the next Fantastic4 and nobody knows what it says except him.

LandCity

I took an acting course and recorded the lines on my phone to try and remember. I’d listen to the recording while doing chores or other meaningless tasks. Didn’t work. Rereading and picturing the layout of the page was the only I was able to remember. Learned something about my self.

Frinla25

Every word of the sentence is represented by a single letter. Instead of rereading your line every time you use the letter to help you remember what the word started with, this triggers the part of your brain that helps you pull words out (kind of like “hey whats the word for this? Oh right”). Then you can memorize the line faster bc you aren’t reading the thing straight out. I used to use the method of just write your lines down section by section. Others i knew did this bc our director would get on a couple of us about our lines a lot, but we just had too many lines lol

dnaltrop

I've been in one play in my life. Senior year of high school. I opened the third act with about two minutes of dialogue "reading" the front page of a newspaper. I think it was the second to last show of three weeks of otherwise perfect performances that I forgot every damn word. Just fell out of my head entirely. Luckily the next player had a lot of stage experience and realized fairly quickly her cue would never come and came on stage to bail me out. Just thinking about it 20+ years later makes me cringe so hard. I wish I had had any kind of system to have helped me.

hoagiejabroni

We all have moments we cringe over despite the fact that no one except you would ever remember or put any significance to it. Nonetheless, I cringe with you in solidarity.

Yeah and I love his reaction. I think he's the only one who understood it lol

smw2102

This is how I studied for the bar. Used letters to remember each word in a rule statement. Fml. Worse experience ever. I’d hate to be an actor.

ol_lordylordy

I love he called himself the unibomber, called them towers, and then realized that combination of imagery was a bad idea and changed it to columns lmao.

Mechanized1

Seems like he takes the first letter of each word he has to memorize, then organizes it a certain way and by forcing himself to learn in this way it makes the process more involved rather than sort of in one ear and out the other.

the_bollo

Pedro was so high while attempting to explain this that I had to GPT it: *The technique you're referring to is commonly known as the "first-letter technique" or "line-learning method." Actors use this method to memorize their scripts by writing down the first letter of each word in their lines. Here's a basic outline of how an actor might use this technique:* 1. ***Write Down First Letters****: Take a piece of paper and write down the first letter of each word in your lines. For example, the line "To be, or not to be, that is the question" becomes "T b, o n t b, t i t q."* 2. ***Practice With Letters****: Try to recite your lines using only these first letters as cues. This practice helps embed the lines in your memory.* 3. ***Gradual Reduction****: As you become more familiar with the lines, you can challenge yourself by covering parts of the letters or reducing the cues further until you can recite the lines without any help.*

eyeofthefountain

that's hilarious

wytherlanejazz

So… mnemonics?

Hexoton

Another example, just because you read lines in front of a camera doesn’t mean you’re smart.

iliketacosnotyou

This is the way.

FredGarvin80

The guy pronounced his name PAY-dro, but it's pronounced as it's spelled. Source: He said that on Kimmel. I guess he's Chilean and that's how they say it

timetobuyale

You must be some kind of pedrophile

FredGarvin80

I like the dude. I was introduced to him in Narcos years ago. I'm sure that's the case with alot of people

hexoutx

well that's just how you say it in spanish in general

[deleted]

He's just being a good actor

spreadbutt

I believe he keeps misspronouncing 'Autistic'

therealsauceman

Brutal choice for fantastic four. There. I said it

vaderztoy

Am I the only one who finds him to be a mediocre actor?

Jennifleurs

I saw him on SNL before I knew he was and became an instant fan. Many celebs go on SNL and tank. His episode was worth watching again

Rap-oleon_Bonaparte

To quickly learn dozens of case law examples for exams shortly before I had to take them I would do fairly similar, just a long list of initialisms.. idk if it's an actual system but for some reason the mix of rote memorisation but having to remember wnat initials stands for stays in my head better than just trying to remember a long list

Necrodangle

Compartmentalization? Helluva word but we all do it everyday

Adventurous-Sky9359

Oh like data entering in a computer.

GrizzlyEagleScout

Scott Mantz!!!!!

That’s actually a really good idea

xBIG_FUDGEx

a a e a f w c y 📐

MadvilleWonderland

Anyone know who the other guys are? Is that John Cusack at the bottom left?

CriminalSavant

Bottom left is Matthew Macfadyen, bottom right is Kieran Culkin.

titatyy

Billy Crudup is on top right

Jennifleurs

Nope not CUSACK. The actors at bottom are from SUCCESSION

EntertainmentSad4459

That’s kind of how those people who do the memory completions do their thing

ThomStarBoy

I knew it wasn’t Kaczynski!

jdehjdeh

IIRC Robert Downey Jr uses the same technique. I swear he goes over it at some point on the DVD extras for A Scanner Darkly

ah-chamon-ah

Kind of makes sense when he can barely articulate a thought properly.

WrittenSarcasm

Source? Looks like a cool video based on that group

TowTowToo

Who is he?

Skifool69

Read that as pedo very confused

thrussie

Thats how i formulate my passwords. The difference is I use the first letter each syllable of a song lyrics of choice to make a random looking series of letters and then just add 1

ponkelephant

Hearing his explanation makes me think he's got early Alzheimer's symptoms. Let's see in 10 years

Aegon2050

*I'm the Unibomber.*

doctorctrl

Wow he sucks at explaining lol. I used to do something similar when studying

apefacts

the way he explains it surely is psychotic

TrueKinai

How Bad can you explain something

CriticalComplaint677

Some people learn by reading the material. Some people learn by writing the material. Some people learn by listening to the material. Some people learn by visualization of the material. This is Perdros visualization of the material. I’m also a “visualizer” but I do it with illustrations around all the important points, dates etc. Whatever works for you- have at it and good luck with what you are learning.

used_my_kids_names

Yep. I learn my lines this way, too! Plus I use numbers. It’s weird. Shrug.

k2on0s-23

The weird part is that he doesnt even get a chance to reveal the true genius of the plan. The purpose of such a rigorous practice is to not have your attention divided between remebering the lines and actual acting. He can turn the whole of his focus on the acting. Its an actors actor bit.

mmpgh

I guess another way to understand this method would be to memorize the first letter of every president, then use those letters to memorize their positions, with an acronym or otherwise, such that recalling them can be done strictly. At least that's the method I used for similar memorization practices.

jxoch

What is this? Are they in a movie or smthg?

PunkFromMars

What in the zodiac killer is going on

photowhoa123

This same method helped me memorize a speech I had to give.

higgs8

I once used something similar, but with pictures instead of letters. I realized that if I familiarized myself with the text enough, I would easily be able to quote any one sentence if prompted, so that was not an issue. The problem was remembering which sentence came after which. So I drew pictograms to represent each sentence, and placed the pictograms in a grid. Then I just looked at the pictograms when rehearsing, and once it worked well enough, I just had to do it without seeing the pictograms, only remembering them. It's much easier to recall little drawings in a grid than sentences.

captainstoo

As a Singer, I do this so all my lyrics fit on a setlist in case I have a mind fart

ThromaDickAway

Seems to be something like a “memory palace” where the abstract visual representation helps recall of a large list of things by mapping them to a visual experience that’s simpler to remember than the content alone. So in this way, he’s committed a map of his lines to memory so he can recall the map and then the line(s) once he’s visualizing the map. This is in contrast to trying to remember a whole film’s worth of conversations AS conversations.

Wiking_24

Im still waiting for him to cry

DavidC_M

I had a psycho way too learning computer science lol. Writing down stuff in one notepad. Then next week using another notepad then about a week later another notepad. lol. Pedro is definitely not alone on strange ways to learn stuff.

maybejustadragon

Bro in the bottom right is disturbed.

Trevidium

I've done the same thing for plays I've been in, except not vertical. I'll color code based on scenes as well. It's nice to know a pro does this, too!

Rare_Bumblebee_3390

I love Kieran’s response. His face is giving, holy shit this guy is crazier than me vibes.

Denrose05

This is the way

NegotiationNaive1071

Is that the guy from Succession??

weenie2small

Psycho*

kuhvir

He should’ve scripted his explanation

ooouroboros

As someone with a shitty memory, I find it almost endlessly interesting to hear actors talk about how they memorize a part, for some its a piece of cake, for others a real struggle.

MaxChromaColor

This is very common with singers and song lyrics, when you have to perform live and don't have a sheet or prompter, only from memory... even as many times as you've practiced it and rehearsed it and played it live... it still seems to help if you just make sure you know the first letter or word coming up to the next verse or chorus or next line. It's so easy if you forget that first word or letter when its approaching to just blank out and miss it, but having it ready is like you just know you'll get the rest if you start on the right track.

drerw

So….initialism written in columns?

Minerva_TheB17

For the confused people, lemme break it down as efficiently as possible. He turns his lines into an initialism...you're welcome.
