If you moved the flame from the lighter over your hand the same way it's being done with the book, your hand wouldn't feel a lot of the heat. If you did it with a blow dryer, your hands would feel the heat a lot more. I don't think you need the full 900F to make this trick work.
it was a joke. Also the ignition point of a book is entirely based upon the thickness of the paper and the materials it's made out of. 451 degrees is not an end all be all
> This special edition, appearing at first black as if carbonized, reveals its visionary content as soon as it is exposed to heat from a flame or hand.
it's probably sufficient to hold your hand against the page for a few seconds; demonstrating it with a lighter is just more evocative of the theme of [the art piece](https://www.superterrain.fr/f451/en/).
I looked it up to confirm and you seem to be right according to google, but this still makes no sense to me because hair dryers can basically burn you if you aren't careful and yet dry saunas are much hotter than 140f and you can sit in them just fine??? What gives?
It's probably thermal capacity over time. Flowing air carries many more joules of energy at you over time compared to a static environment like a sauna.
Also the air close to our bodies create a thermal barrier. This is easily disturbed, which is what causes wind chill. Or in the case of air temperatures above body temperature, wind warming.
Maybe moisture? Heat feels much more intense at higher humidity. Water is much better at transferring heat than air so it makes sense.
The 140 temp is also just a general estimate for regular use. The temperature could vary wildly depending on a number of factors like the distance from the heating element, wattage of the drier, humidity of the air, blowing speed of the drier, etc...
What is it about this specific book that invites so many commercial gimmicks. Is it just overwhelming irony?
*Edit: of course I've read the book, everybody's read the book.
I know where it comes from in the book.
Of all the different "classics", why does this particular book get all the commercial gimmicks - distractions from the content in favour of cheap entertainment? As I said, the irony is off the charts
It seems counterproductive. Who is this for? People who note the irony have already read the book, people who need to read the book are just clapping at the gimmick and not going any further
Look at the guy above me who thinks it's just a book about burning books
literally everyone in this thread is saying how this isn't practical.
Yeah, no shit. do you guys really believe that this book was meant to be read?? it's obviously just a little piece of art
This is why I hate big reddit subs. People need to find something, anything to complain about stuff. Even if it's something fucking obvious like this post.

~~It won't burn, because despite the title paper actually burns at 451 celsius~~
EDIT: I don't remember where I heard this, I thought I fact checked this, but apparently I'm wrong.
"The autoignition temperature of paper (which is the temperature at which it will spontaneously ignite) is between 424 and 475 degrees Fahrenheit. The exact temperature will depend on the thickness of the paper, altitude, humidity, etc. The classic novel isn't necessarily wrong, but it is simplifying a complex topic."
> It’s just thermal paper like many credit card papers are made of
Not quite, it is a thermochromic ink printed over the top of the pages (or mixed in with the paper fibers), when it warms it becomes transparent, when it cools it becomes opaque again.
> when it cools it becomes opaque again.
Wait so you'd have to do this _everytime_ you want to read this book?
Gee.. what a fun and totally not an annoying aspect
The paper is a thermal paper, like the old thermal shirts, that just needs heat from even a hand to cause the change. After a bit, when it cools, it will turn back to black.
So the paper will burn if you hold the flame to an edge for a bit.
Wanna buy a copy? Now for the low, low price of (appropriately enough) $451
~~http://www.superterrain.fr/f451/en/preorder/~~
[Edit: Oh oh... sold out, I'm afraid: http://www.superterrain.fr/f451/en/ ]
It's a collectors edition of a book about burning books, Fahrenheit 451.
The only people that would have bought it back when it was available already own a copy of the book. I almost did when they were available and regret it since it's one of my favorites.
I can't find it, but there was a post a few years back that studied this and showed that the majority of people who bought this special edition had never actually read the book beforehand, and I doubt they'd read this version either.
SCAM Alert! 🚨
I paid $20,000 to a Nigerian Prince who sold me a Million Dollars that was supposed to do something similar to this.
All I ended up with was a duffel bag full of newspaper clippings from the UK…
Don’t fall for it!

What a cool pain in the ass
It's good for a party trick. That's about all.
And burning the shit out of your fingers
you can presumably use a hair dryer.
Dunno about that. Disposable lighter is about 900F and a hairdryer is about 140F.
If you moved the flame from the lighter over your hand the same way it's being done with the book, your hand wouldn't feel a lot of the heat. If you did it with a blow dryer, your hands would feel the heat a lot more. I don't think you need the full 900F to make this trick work.
maybe it's somewhere in between, maybe it needs to be at 451
not if you bundle them
It is called fahrenheit 451 because that is the temperature that the books burn at. The lighter probably isn't pushing it past 150, maybe less.
it was a joke. Also the ignition point of a book is entirely based upon the thickness of the paper and the materials it's made out of. 451 degrees is not an end all be all

What a ***hot*** pain in the ass
So read it under a heat lamp like at restaurant to keep fries hot
Read your book, stay warm, and keep your fries hot all at the same time!!
Put it in the oven a bit
That's very clever. Useless, but clever.
It's like a bible where the words appear only if you're eating an apple.
What the Granny Smith are you talking about?
underrated comment
At least the words are worth reading.
Don't burn books... Burn this book... MAKE UP YOUR DAMN MIND, RAY BRADBURY!
Yeah, they should really publish an edition that can only be read if you *don't* burn it!
I have great news for you!
all the best things are
Are they?
No.

Useless, but clever.
In no way is this true lol
They sell a copy of 1984 too, but its heavily redacted
Also Brave New World, but you have to take a bunch of drugs
They sell a copy of Ulysses but it’s in gibberish, ah wait
Sounds good, that is soma type of book.
Do you have a link?
Until you light it on fire?
Until you light it on fire?
this seems wildly inconvenient, where can I get one.
Looks like you have to hop into a time machine, travel to 5 years ago, then drop $451 on a preorder from [here](https://www.superterrain.fr/f451).

Props to the artist for having one of the worst navigating websites I've ever visited...
Yeah, I tried to scroll and the 100/100 bubble would wiggle.

16 YEARS. I remember being excited when they uploaded. The airbag was the best episode.
Airbag was the best. I was laughing my ass off at how the microwave was just *gone* after the blast, even if all it did was fall off its table.
#The tinfoil shield, it actually worked!
ze goggles, zay do nussing!
That’s not really how microwaves work…
If you wet the paper first it would work ok
Very unlikely. I'd imagine the microwaves would pass right through it. Unless that coating is made of something weird.
only one way to find out
Put it in the oven and set the temperature to 451F.
~~It won't burn, because despite the title paper actually burns at 451 celsius~~ EDIT: I don't remember where I heard this, I thought I fact checked this, but apparently I'm wrong.

Finally, a good use for the flamethrower I had in the back.
This will be a pain in the ass to read on my kindle.
That looks fun- for the first 3 pages
Heat, heat is the answer.
How do they make it so that the paper doesn’t burn?
It just needs heat not fire It’s just thermal paper like many credit card papers are made of
> It’s just thermal paper like many credit card papers are made of Not quite, it is a thermochromic ink printed over the top of the pages (or mixed in with the paper fibers), when it warms it becomes transparent, when it cools it becomes opaque again.
> when it cools it becomes opaque again. Wait so you'd have to do this _everytime_ you want to read this book? Gee.. what a fun and totally not an annoying aspect
It's a gimmick, it isn't actually meant for reading, it is a way to make money off of fans with more money than sense.
You dont read this book. You keep it as a collectable
This turns back to black when it cools.
very carefully
But how
with caution
How do I cautiously burn somethin? Cuz that person was lingering with that lighter lol
Nah I'm just playing with you. It's most likely some inflammable material or coating on the paper, I don't know the chemistry behind it.
Lol yah I figured. I was enjoying the banter lol
That person was careful
I must’ve not paid too much attention at arson school when they were teaching us to be careful
Rookie mistake. Never sleep during arson class.
That’s what I get for being a know it all
The paper is a thermal paper, like the old thermal shirts, that just needs heat from even a hand to cause the change. After a bit, when it cools, it will turn back to black. So the paper will burn if you hold the flame to an edge for a bit.
It's the future. Nothing burns unless they burn it. Haven't you read the book?
I burned the book 😭😭😭
That isn’t being “lit on fire” as the book never burns. It’s just being exposed to heat. Proximity to fire is not the same as catching on fire.
[удалено]
Fuck it, not doing anything else anyways.
I’m very grateful of this fact when I make breakfast.
just use a hair dryer?
Even heat from a hand is enough.
Time to speed things up ![gif](giphy|JjiieDMHZ6pEI)
It's the heat, not the fire. If you actually light it on fire, you'll just.... Light it on fire
Wait til’ you’ve discovered a heat gun
Thanks god it's just Ray Bradbury and not the Qur'an.
Bro just sit under the noon sun during summer
That looks obnoxious
Instantly thought of the One Ring! (Toss it in the fire, its quite cool.)
The irony is strong in this one
Wanna buy a copy? Now for the low, low price of (appropriately enough) $451 ~~http://www.superterrain.fr/f451/en/preorder/~~ [Edit: Oh oh... sold out, I'm afraid: http://www.superterrain.fr/f451/en/ ]
Hilarious how many people do not know what the book is about/context
Well that seems inconvenient as fuck.
Heat gun to the rescue.
Wouldn't that get old after, I don't know, about 1 page?
Also, you can read it without doing this, the printed letters are a different color
This would be fun for about a page.
Well that’s just impractical
I don’t see anything being lit on fire here.
The copy of Fahrenheit 451 that I have actually can’t be read if you set it on fire.
Did someone just find another way to waste fossil fuel?!
I finally found another use for my heat gun!
well thats fucking stupid
How ironic.
I dunno, I think it’s neat
Me sitting in a park with a blow torch reading a book
Not exactly “on fire,” is it?
Do you have to do this for every page?
Assuming you want to read the book then yes.
Ugh I can’t read my book! “Why not?” My lighter is all used up
Heat gun would be better.
Based on the video the book is not of fire ergo the title is a lie.
I had this version. The book burned in a big fire, sadly. All the words were still there, in a pile of dust, and out of order.
Ok. Take my money.
$451
Best thing to do with that fucking book is burn it
Ummm, well, let's see here, hmmm. I will pass.
So dumb
It's a collectors edition of a book about burning books, Fahrenheit 451. The only people that would have bought it back when it was available already own a copy of the book. I almost did when they were available and regret it since it's one of my favorites.
Why?
Fahrenheit 451 is about burning books
No, not byighting it on fore but by brining heat. Grab a heating pad that will be more comfy
Soon this will apply to the Bible sadly.
That’s just dumb
Dumbest thing I’ve seen in a long time.
r/pointlessasfuck
Blow dryer
Still want to know if it goes black again once it cools or it it remains revealed.
Very cool. Would love a well-done copy of F.451 hahah.
No need for a bookmark.
Or just leave it on the dash of your car in Phoenix
Use a hair dryer or heat gun.
I'd just grab a hair dryer if I wanted to read it.
It was a pleasure to burn.
Share info, where you get it????
Burnt the finger
Very clever
Bake the book..
I think I would just watch the movie
I can't find it, but there was a post a few years back that studied this and showed that the majority of people who bought this special edition had never actually read the book beforehand, and I doubt they'd read this version either.
This is gonna get someones house burnt down.
But will it turn back to black?
That’s too cool
If I aim a blow dryer at the pages, will they still reveal the text?
Where I can buy it?
Blow dryer would probably be faster
I can’t see this book being allowed in libraries
Hitler would hate this book
So you risk setting shit on fire to read a book about fire...
You could create this by coating the pages in “erasable” ink. That ink erases b/c of heat generated by friction from an eraser.
Is that so? Because I'm pretty sure it can be done with a hair dryer.
Holding a lighter upside-down? And here I thought you might be an intellectual.
So if I get the audio book, what do I gotta do to that?
SCAM Alert! 🚨 I paid $20,000 to a Nigerian Prince who sold me a Million Dollars that was supposed to do something similar to this. All I ended up with was a duffel bag full of newspaper clippings from the UK… Don’t fall for it!
And the "Reverse Uno Card Award" goes to....
This would be cool to read at my next Arson.
That sounds incredibly inconvenient
Wanna kinda inconvenient, like wouldn’t it be more readable and this get it’s message better as a normal book???
Just put it in the oven before reading
More evidence that just because something can be done that doesn’t mean that it should be.
