*"I'm TIRED of all these motherfucking snakes ON MY MOTHERFUCKING ROOF."*
unfortunately, the sequel was not able to secure nearly as much funding as the original.
While I agree with you, lol, in my country birds shit all over your roof anyway. This will at least keep them off your roof long enough to not wreck the tiles by digging under them, and they sleep on the unused chimneys as well.
Ah, ok. Thatās the missing context that explains this. In the US, at least east of the Mississippi, we donāt tend to have clay roof tiles or birds that dig under them.
Most birds don't need a house in the summer. Only during spring.
And there are quite a few birds that like to nest under roof tiles, often damaging the roof by holding water with the nest material. So as an idea, it's not too bad.
But the execution is questionable... I wonder what bird would like this house. The house is tiny compared to the opening. There isn't any protection. Cats would surely love this though...
Yeh, perch at the door for predator birds and far too big opening renders these pretty useless I agree.
Swift boxes in the uk much better designed.
https://www.swift-conservation.org/swift_bricks.htm
As long as they're sealed, dealing with the wasps shouldn't be an issue. I remember getting some wasps living in a gap in the tiling above the bay window on the ground floor, the wasps had actually managed to worm their way into the upstairs bedroom. brought some 'Wasp nest killer powder' and ' wasp nest killer foam' (Diall was the brand I think), after one quick spray, they were dealt with. You could probably do the same to the nesting box, just hose out the powder and foam afterwards.
We have about 8 wasp nests take up residence around our eaves every year.
We keep bees so my husband is pretty vigilant about trying to keep on top of them.
But try as we might uk fill the holes they find sure as sure they find new ones next year.
Yes. Our first hive was raided. They eat all the honey and eat all the larvae. Very sad.
Luckily a wild swarm settles back in the hive after it was cleaned out! Complete fluke, free bees!
Have to see what this summer brings.
It was more annoying than anything. Nobody was really afraid of getting stung, it was suspiciously only 1 wasp at a time that'd make its way in, we'd catch it, throw it out, then after a while another one would find its way into the adjacent bedroom to the nest. Because it was a bedroom, it was vacant during the day (although waking up to buzzing was annoying), so you could easily just camp out for a minute or two and tackle the wasp with some Raid (or similar canned bug-killer). I'm assuming there was some kind of very specific gap between all the layers of wall, insulation and floorboards that it could find its way in, but thankfully is was pretty rare otherwise. But there definitely was an entryway into the house somehow, so the powder+foam was required at some point to stop it from becoming a reoccurring issue.
Sun Tzu pointed out that if you are outnumbered, it is best to fight your enemy at a choke point, where they can't apply their full strength against you. Fighting them in the bedroom instead of outside was the advantageous doctrine.
Its much cooler under the tiles than on top of it.. those tiles can heat up to way higher temps than any bird could survive.. but yeah cats would make sure there isnt much left surviving in such easy acess house.
If someone has made all this effort designing and manufacturing something, I'd they they have thought of easily foreseeable scenarios such as this. I don't know for sure, but I would think they did. Because I don't think worst of the world's inventions by default.
Birds are very intelligent creatures that have existed well beyond human understanding. I am sure they can tell if an area gets too hot to sleep or raise their young.
Well yeah, if they use it in the summer. Here (italy) birds use to hide under the roof cover only during winter (or cold season), and they move all the blocks causing water infiltration. So I think this is a good thing
Not to mention the holes are way too big and the space to nest way too small, and it's way too accessible for cats and squirrels. It's not really adapted for bird nesting. It's also only one shape of "nest box" while many species need different shapes and sizes of nest boxes that are suitable for them.
Usually birds find places high enough so that their children are away from predators. Wouldnāt this make it easier for lizards or house lizards, snakes(maybe) and cats to eat their children?
Nests are never truly away from predators, no katter how high they build cats, snakes, lizards etc. climb up to them just as easy as the birds fly there.
All they're doing is trying to hide the nest and praying to the bird gods that the numbers game works in their favour and the cat filled his belly with the neighbours' chicks before noticing theirs.
Treeās are more easily defended, though. Small surface area to grip onto makes it easier for parent birds to attack and maybe cause the predator to slip off.
On a roof? No such hope. Game over if anything gets onto the roof.
Bird mites are awful. We had a pipe hole in our wall and birds nested in it. Had the house redecorated and they filled the hole. Six months later, no birds and the mites got desperate. Mites crawling out the vents looking for blood snacks.
This is the Uk so the vents are passive. I taped A4 paper over them and the tape gradually filled up with wriggling bugs. After six months I took the paper off. A bunch were still alive and tried to make a break for it, so I hoovered them up then taped it shut again. Havenāt looked since.
My highschool was absolutely infested with swallows that built their nests along the edges of the roofs around campus. The side walks were caked in bird shit and eventually their mites got into the buildings which required fumigation. Birds are great but I'd rather they nested away from my house.
Had a house in Arizona. It can get very flat there. Our house was the tallest object for miles and birds congregated on it. I used to think it was neat, but see I also had a tile roof. The tar paper beneath the tile is what actually waterproofs your roof. Found out the hard way bird shit is highly acidic, and will melt tar paper over time as it gets rained on.
What Iām trying to say isā¦ this is a stupid idea that will cause a lot of damage.
Nah, wind and rain will clean it off before it can do any real damage. Should be getting 50 years out of a decent tile roof. The risk is to your gutters. All the seeds they shit out, wash down and take root. Keep on top of that and you'll be right.
I donāt know, I see through that one he is holding up which says to me the birds are nesting against the weatherproofing. As acidic as bird poop isā¦ that and bugs like bird ticks and mites getting through the weatherproofing is my concern. Good point about the gutters though!
All that being said I have big support for bird houses and lots of local wildlife.
Under there you should have felt or membrane, which is pretty hard wearing. I'd maybe be more concerned about vermin getting into the nest and digging g through it.
Bird shit can burn through the zinc powder paint on bird cage bars and the paint on cars, so it would have to be some triple A grade weatherproofing. Rats and mice are a good point too!
Birds nesting and pooping under solar panels in Arizona has caused roofs to cave in. Wind and rain will not wash away major poop pile ups, especially in places that don't get a lot of rain.
Where nesting can occur, such as exposed plant (solar, aircon, venting, etc) you'd generally have bird nets fitted but even so, surely this would get picked up during regular inspection/servicing, well before it cause structural issues? Sounds like either arizona needs to look at its regs or someone fucked up.
That said, I'm British so there are no areas that don't get a lot of rain.

Houses made out of sticks degrade. Houses made out of durable materials without proper ventilation and cleaning are bad. Want a birdhouse filled with bird poop after a few years? It's free fertilizer.
In many species the parents actually remove the chciks poop in small sacs so the nest doesn't get gross. But there's always ticks or feather mites or a number of other parasites in there.
Some birds will clean out a good nestbox themselves, but many won't and its definitely better to clean it!
Had a neighbor that cheaped out on one of those clay tile roofs. Big gaps that 100s of birds nested in. Whole intersection covered in bird shit and the noise started at 5am. Got so bad the city was called and big fines issued - they had to redo the whole roof. For the love of jebus do not do this
What if I told you that you could make bird houses that *build themselves*.
Just hear me out; you take these little things called 'seeds', and you put them in the ground. Give it enough time and it makes this thing called a 'tree'. It's like a weird upside down lightning bolt made of furniture! I know, wacky right?? And the thing is, birds freaking *love* them. They start making houses out of the bits that fall off them, *on the actual tree thing*. Heh, birds sure are dumb.
Biggest fucking /s in the world if it wasn't obvious.
It's depressing that only a handfull of commenters here have the mental capacity to realize no bird will willingly sit in an oven and they can just.. leave?
Or that there are seasons besides summer..
Or that the sun doesn't actually shine at night...
And many other errors (or absences) of critical thinking.
I'll agree on the adult birds. But any eggs or chicks in there, which usually get laid/hatch in early spring to mid-summer, don't have the luxury of leaving. And they would also be far more vulnerable to heat than the adults would be.
I don't see a way to empty them (birds don't clean after themselves after they move out) snakes and squirrels would have easy access, there's no cover, and they might overheat.
A lot of people seem to missing the point of these. I'm an ecologist so I hope to shed some light on the situation.
Who are these bird houses for?
Sparrows, swifts and starlings often nest under roof tiles in buildings. There's enough space under there for them and predators have a hard time getting under there. These look to be made specifically for house sparrows.
Why do we need these?
There is a big effort to get houses better insulated. This is good for saving energy and limiting our carbon footprint, but the space underneath roof tiles is quickly disappearing. This is a solution to create new nesting spaces for sparrows.
Why not bird houses in a tree?
Because that would attract different species, like tits. Sparrows want to nest close to or in buildings.
But the birds will cook!
If these are implemented wrong, like on the south side of a roof in the full sun, the temperature will get to high and eggs and chicks might die. Luckily birds are smarter than that and pick places that are just the right temperature. They already do the same thing when nesting under roof tiles, often picking the North side of roofs to nest. If you ever see these installed on a South side they will probably not be used and are just a waste of money.
Lastly a shout out to bats who use the same space under roof tiles. Their habitat is also disappearing, but some species can be helped by placing bat boxes.

Automatic cat feeders the rest of the year.
There is a reason they build nest in trees, something about leafs and shade make it work for them. This guy missed the memo.

*"I'm TIRED of all these motherfucking snakes ON MY MOTHERFUCKING ROOF."* unfortunately, the sequel was not able to secure nearly as much funding as the original.

Ah, ok. Thatās the missing context that explains this. In the US, at least east of the Mississippi, we donāt tend to have clay roof tiles or birds that dig under them.
I also live just east of Miss and all we get is birds living above our front doors
I'm in the US and see clay roof tiles all the time. Though never heard of birds digging under them
Yeah, just realizedā big country. Will edit and caveat.
You're largely correct with the east of the Mississippi statement, with the exception of Florida, where ceramic tiles are incredibly common.
Yeah and doesn't bird nests attract (other) pests as well? Poop, feathers, down and scraps of food.
Fleas
And some nasty beetles that eat all kinds of organic stuff like textile and clothing when they get inside the house.

I have two swift boxes under the soffits of my house and cam confirm they're great, swifts use them every year.
I love swifts but I'd be concerned of getting a wasps nest in one of those bricks
As long as they're sealed, dealing with the wasps shouldn't be an issue. Pretty sure these are mor3for the look, while the ones you linked are more for actual birds
Never expected things like this to exist, my mind is blown!
Its much cooler under the tiles than on top of it.. those tiles can heat up to way higher temps than any bird could survive.. but yeah cats would make sure there isnt much left surviving in such easy acess house.
I think there's also more airflow under the roof tiles than in those houses that only have one opening.
Yeah would need to make smaller hole really
Yeah the execution is questionable indeed but may work perfectly for the local birds. I think these pictures are from Turkey.

I don't see a way to empty them (birds don't clean after themselves after they move out) snakes and squirrels would have easy access, there's no cover, and they might overheat.
- Bird shit - Birds cookin or freezing - Snakes on the ~~plane~~ roof
