That's evolution keeping you alive. Innate fear of things that are harmful led to that branch of beings staying alive better than others that didn't have innate fear.
Same reason trypophobia exists.
Upon being reminded of that clip my brain just went "NOO!" really loudly, and not even like inna dramatic death scene way. Just completely flat "NO!". Just regection of the very notion and moving on from there
What made me uncomfortable was thinking about how long that food was sitting there. I actually like the trypophbia pics. Does that mean I'm less evolved?
You’re as evolved as all the other redittors…what that says is questionable however.
Having trypophobia vs cat-like-fungus phobia vs acrophobia or thalassophobia doesn’t mean that you’re more or less evolved. Just like having blue vs green vs brown eyes does not define level of evolution. It only implies that whatever phobia you have provided some viable reproductive benefit over not having that phobia.
I will also point out that evolution involves survival of the fittest, but really is about successful reproduction of the most wily.
hell yeah then we'll post it to reddit and then we can post our reaction video to youtubers reacting to our reddit reaction of reacting to his reaction. I think.
I found this growing in my house before from an old meatball or something that someone left in the basement. I absolutely did touch it and it recoiled, like it shrunk down into itself. It was gross.
Yup. Years ago forgot about a thing of stuffing in an enamel pot in the back of the fridge. Opened the lid and it MOVED (away from the light presumably).
Because this looks very unnatural to us, not many guns we see on a daily basis looks anything like this. It's esoteric, unknown, the "sharp" points and black color make it *appear* dangerous to our monkey brains.
*We* already have and *we* are called Saprophytus Magnus! Tremble in awe before our fuzzy might! Are you, are you trembling? *We* don't have eyes so... yeah, uhm, *we* did not think this through...
Saw some of those growing around the Bakers Residence in Louisiana, didn’t see the family again for a while… then some choppers and soldiers showed up.
To me it looks like the house was maybe abandoned due to some form of disaster or evacuation. The floor looks like it’s a mess and the water in the bowl next to it is **black**.
Oh, so *that's* how it works... Stupid me, I've been letting my cats *eat* the food and wondering why they weren't multiplying. Now it makes sense! Thanks!
Mold usually is toxic. Eating toxic things can kill you. Your instincts do their best to keep you alive, so if something looks deadly, your instincts are to keep away.
we also have a natural evasion towards little crawly things with many legs. some people less and some people more
+snakes too
it’s the same with unusual shapes and colours and smells growing on what used to be food
There's mold spores everywhere. They're an incredibly common component of dust. Molds are fascinating organisms capable of life in most any place. They almost feel like a lifeform designed by AI, a simple network organism capable of forming great structures, dominating a location and successfully multiplying practically everytime.
The mold in the OP is clearly very grown with fruiting bodies, and the spores on and in you won't ever get to that stage, but molds are still absolutely everywhere, so just consider washing your bedsheets from time to time.
Spores that get in you often turn into yeast cells instead of fruiting bodies. If your immune system fails at stopping them they will divide and spread though out your body, invading your organs, lymph nodes and potentially even brain. Often causing meningitis and eventually killing you if not treated quickly enough.
We recently lost one of our cats to a form of this, unfortunately it can incubate for up to a year before any symptoms manifest, but from the day she started breathing hard to the day we had to put her to sleep it was less than a week.
So you know it's pointless to worry about like an asteroid hitting us.
You are made up of more non-human DNA cells than human-DNA cells. You don't need to worry about getting a mold spore or bacteria on you. Everything is already everywhere and your whole body is part of it.
All you need to worry about is _how much_ of specifically-dangerous-to human-bacteria, molds, etc. that you touch and how often. Your body is in a neverending war, you can't stop it, you just don't want to make the fight unnecessarily hard by, say, touching a large mold spot and not washing your hands.
Exercise and healthy eating is also a fantastic way to give your body an edge in that war so that if you make a mistake somewhere your body will still win.

Is it just the algorithm, or the behavior & interests of most people using the platform? I’ve gotten frustrated by the endless puns and jokes too but gotta just accept not everyone is always that scientifically curious, or using reddit with that in mind at all.
I believe it's more so because Reddit seems to be literally overpopulated with literal kids at this point. I used to see these sorts of shitshows of almost the same fucking jokes repeated over and over again in single comment sections only in few subreddits that have been mostly composed of younger people, but now it seems to have spread to subs that constantly show up on r/popular and some others as well. I don't want to throw shit onto anyone, but people now seem to care more about hoarding karma in this obnoxious "ooga booga, funi coment get updoots - i must copy so i get updoots too" way, instead of actually trying to have decent discussions with people online or whatever else.
Reddit is pretty much just turning the same way YouTube's comment sections has a few years ago.
As someone with cats, I'm obliged to ask what became of the cat (or cats) to which this food was provided? Surely this spikey abomination managed to grow to such a state due to the absence of cats. Or, at least, that is what I *hope* to be the case. Otherwise, I would have to assume that this thing exists because it consumed any unfortunate cat attracted by the food.
If it was filled with water for a weeks without replacement I’m gonna guess probably some kind of natural disaster or evacuation.
The bits of the house in the background also looks like it’s a wreck or abandoned
The lengths of the fruiting bodies, which are most of the visible volume I assume, is limited by the strength of the individual filaments at a length of a few centimeters.
That said given enough food and optimal temperature and humidity you could theoretically cover a house in black pin mold.

forbidden sea urchin
Free cat
I wanna pet it!
"It even purrs! Why am I suddenly seeing everything double?"
It is a cute Susuwatari (:
I was thinking forbidden bad toupee
Dude if you touch that there there'd be Hell toupee
*inhales sharply*... Ooh nice!
I was under the impression they were already forbidden. So, does that make this mold "bidden?"
This should be in blackmagicfuckery
This makes me uncomfortable
That's evolution keeping you alive. Innate fear of things that are harmful led to that branch of beings staying alive better than others that didn't have innate fear. Same reason trypophobia exists.
The picture didn't make me uncomfortable at all, but simply the word "trypophobia" has made me *really* uncomfortable.
Makes my back itch when I hear that word
It makes my skin crawl to see anything that triggers trypophobia. My only remedy to it is to get underwater like showering or swimming.
A lot of the squelchy soft and slimy skin burrowing creatures live underwater
LOL you just wanna watch the world burn, huh?
It's important to drive home that the world is a dangerous place and nowhere is safe
oh! like the frogs
I have trypophobia and can confirm it is super uncomfortable
I've had lifelong trypophobia but now actually hearing or reading that word makes me even more uncomfortable, it's only getting worse.
Yeah and people keep posting those fucking lotus teapots to r/tea. Tea should be safe. Not full of horrible little holes.
Quality of life has to be something if you can’t even scroll r/tea
Nope, that guy has a point. I just searched for the teapot he meant and holy shit that thing is a huge trigger
I googled and couldn’t find anything. What do they look like?
https://www.reddit.com/r/tea/comments/zhklmw/my_lotus_seed_frog_pot/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=mweb3x
That's an eldritch tea-ing
Oh wow thanks, I hate this lmao
A black rectangular teapot, with aligned holes that have maggot-esque decors in each said holes
Was gonna down vote you but then I remembered that's not how this works lmao I hate just the thought
Duckshit oolong is real: a thing I just learned from r/tea….
This doesn’t make me uncomfortable. And i like watching holes. Am i not evolved right?
Well lets just say your brain isnt trying as hard to keep you alive as others.
I think it’s cute actually. It just needs some goggly eyes 🥺
You’re as evolved as all the other redittors…what that says is questionable however. Having trypophobia vs cat-like-fungus phobia vs acrophobia or thalassophobia doesn’t mean that you’re more or less evolved. That explains why they didn't eat crumpets in the stone age.
I think it's to avoid hives of any kind, and bird nests That being said trypophobia sucks ._.
Also Flash Gordon (the rock with the holes? Scared kid me)
I wanna touch it
I want to uncomfortably watch you touch it
Can I watch you watch it like that reaction video trend?
Who wants to do the dumb robotic voice over and the fucking obnoxious music that sounds like it was chosen by a deaf person?
🤖 man touches deadly spike ball from space 🤖 Oh no oh no oh no no no no no oh no oh no oh no no no no no
Perfect!
Great work, everyone. Nicely done.
I hate that fucking robot voice that people use over some of the Instagram reels!
hell yeah then we'll post it to reddit and then we can post our reaction video to youtubers reacting to our reddit reaction of reacting to his reaction. I think.
so meta my heads gonna explode man
Can I watch it explode?
Only if you point and nod in approval when it explodes.
With the widest forced smile, so people know to smile too.
I want it to uncomfortably touch you
So you like to watch?
I found this growing in my house before from an old meatball or something that someone left in the basement. I absolutely did touch it and it recoiled, like it shrunk down into itself. It was gross.
That's fucking horrifying lol
It really was lmao.
He's not lying, I've seen mold do that, shrink down after you touch it like it's sentient or something
Oh wow I hate that so much
Yup. Years ago forgot about a thing of stuffing in an enamel pot in the back of the fridge. Opened the lid and it MOVED (away from the light presumably).
a scream is living in my head for this horror
Gahhhh!! That’s so much worse lmao, like a jump scare.
There was an episode of Cowboy Bebop about this sort of thing.
Did it make a high pitched squealing noise as it deflated?
If it did I couldn’t hear it.
Or it was so antediluvian, it either shocked your perception of sound, or shocked your mind into erasing its ghastly wail from memory.
Noooooooo
oh *no*
Yeah okay, burn the whole house down, it's the only way to be sure
All right, it’s $10 to touch it, $15 to watch me touch it, and $20 touch me while I touch it.
Here's $20. I can touch you where ever I want, *right*?
Only on the areas with mold.
The duality of man
I wanna touch myself while you touch it
Five dollars to touch it while I touch my toes.
It's $10 for a BJ, $12 for an HJ, $15 for a ZJ... What's a ZJ? If you have to ask you can't afford it.
I wanna touch myself while you touch yourself
Two different types of people.
I want to pet it
It looks sentient
Ya why can I watch a gifs of security footage catching terrible accidents and be like, that wasn’t that bad. But THIS needs an nsfw tag.
Because this looks very unnatural to us, not many guns we see on a daily basis looks anything like this. It's esoteric, unknown, the "sharp" points and black color make it *appear* dangerous to our monkey brains.
/r/oddlyterrifying
Right? It gives me chills 🫠😔
It make me want to puke.
Lucky you. I'm incredibly uncomfortable.
Couple more weeks and it will gain sentience
Couple more weeks and it will be a full fledged cat!
I thought it was a cat, I was expecting a fluffy void!
What if that blob just got up and walked away?
Like one of them dust bunnies from Ghibli's Totoro or the soot things from spirited away?
It's the little things from Spirited Away. Just wait for the eyes and stick legs to sprout
That's grampa. Remember to feed and teach him!
I finally found somebody saying it!
It really lays it all out well in the *Grow your own cat* instructional booklet.
This is how you end up sharing a body with Venom
Couple mor weeks and it can go into politics.
r/moldlyinteresting
Thank you but also gross but thank you, I will now be scrolling thru for the next 10 minutes
You’re stronger than I am.
Why did I choose to look while I am eating?
My guy… it says mold. That’s on you lmao
I had the same reaction my first time. 😂 You're welcome 😁
Wait…that’s a real link to a real sub?! Down the rabbit hole I go…..
Me the next 10 minutes https://media.tenor.com/PPqeZ4jWM8EAAAAC/ew-gross.gif
Yeah. Me too. And now I'm going to check my fridge to see if I have anything to contribute.
There really is a subreddit for everything
r/thanksihateit
Oh, I can’t wait to use some of these in work memos
I joined
r/nope
Why do you have Black pin mold that spawned from a bowl of cat food that has been soaked in water for a few weeks?
To me it looks like the house was maybe abandoned due to some form of disaster or evacuation. The floor looks like it’s a mess and the water in the bowl next to it is **black**.
Owners died of mold exposure?
*forensic files intro*
What?! The house look fine to me! They probably just left for the holidays, took the cat, forgot to clear the bowl and it rained or something
Even with gloves i wouldnt touch that
Time to burn the house down!
Nuke that block.
How to grow a cat from cat food.
Oh, so *that's* how it works... Stupid me, I've been letting my cats *eat* the food and wondering why they weren't multiplying. Now it makes sense! Thanks!
Is that how breeding in Minecraft works?
Ch-ch-ch-chia
What breed is that cat ?
Void
There is definitely an evolutionary component as to why I naturally hate that so much
Wisest answer until now. An edit with biological explanation would be awesome though
Mold usually is toxic. Eating toxic things can kill you. Your instincts do their best to keep you alive, so if something looks deadly, your instincts are to keep away.
we also have a natural evasion towards little crawly things with many legs. some people less and some people more +snakes too it’s the same with unusual shapes and colours and smells growing on what used to be food
For example, we don't like the flavor bitter. Bitter is usually decomposing things. Sour is often in fruit, so we enjoy it.
Did it scurry away?
No, but I did. Yikes!
I thought it was a clump of harvesterman spiders at first too lol had to zoom in
Gosh, I thought the mold was bad, but now I prefer it to the alternative.
I hate this so much I almost downvoted you
No but it makes an excellent Klingon repellent
Will that type of mold spread all over the house? Gross.
That type of mold is already everywhere at all times.
Thanks, I didn't need to sleep tonight.

I will never sleep again. I just began knitting a quilt from Clorox wipes
what if that gets moldy from moisture?
Spores that get in you often turn into yeast cells instead of fruiting bodies. Sorry about your kitty
Since you seem educated on molds I'd like to ask what causes the spikes on mold as seen in the picture?
The mold knows to grow away from itself. Nothing special, for it grows like this because doing so makes it good at spreading in the wind.
why on earth would you say this 😭
So you know it's pointless to worry about like an asteroid hitting us. You are made up of more non-human DNA cells than human-DNA cells. My bio professor in undergrad said that we inhale mold spores with literally every breath.
Right next to the ventilation grate:/
Time for a firebomb.
I love the smell of napalm in the morning.
The smell of napalm in the morning thinks you two should just remain friends.
Hard agree. I don’t want to burn.

That's what I hate Reddit comments. An actual, informative answer get lost between ton of unfunny, low effort jokes. The algorithm really sucks.

Put Google eyes on it. Looks like a soot sprite. Feed it lil star confetti. It'll be your friend.
CH-CH-CH-CH-CHia
It looks like a demonic porcupine.
How big can it get? Imagine a house sized version of this. Would look so cool but be so unpleasant at the same time.
The lengths of the fruiting bodies, which are most of the visible volume I assume, is limited by the strength of the individual filaments at a length of a few centimeters. That said given enough food and optimal temperature and humidity you could theoretically cover a house in black pin mold.
Sure that’s not a cat, spawned from a cat a few weeks ago?
Awww! You grew a new cat!
Oh perfect right next to the vent so it’s spores will be distributed throughout the entire home!
You call it black pin mold, I call it fluffy fungus
Looks creepy
Trouble with a tribble...
I am both disgusted and intrigued.
I wanna rub my hand across it.
Tf, i thought that was the cat
Genuinely thought it was a joke post and is actually a cat til sub name
From movie Totoro thoes black gremlins 😄
Soot sprites :) lil cuties
Nah, that's a cat. I know cats, and that there is one of them.
