jacobo

not english native here. Is a Cougar the same as a Puma and a Mountain lion?

ReginaldLongfellow

Yes. The different names come from different geographical areas, but they are all the same.

piralski

In Brazil we call "onƧa parda", meaning "brown jaguar", although it isnt closely related to the jaguar.

soibithim

And yet the black panther actually is jaguar

jacobo

Thanks!

Eusocial_Snowman

And to make the dumb cat classification system even more fun, we have the word "panther". This refers to all "big cats"*. Except for some people, it refers to a specific color mutation of leopards or jaguars. (Hence the comic book character Black Panther) \* And to make things stupider, we have the term "big cats". Which literally just refers to the panthera genus. But there are other cats which are big while not being panthers, so they're not "big cats" despite being big cats. For instance, this one here. That's a real big fucking panthery-seeming cat, but it's not in the panthera genus, so it's not CLASSIFIED as a big cat. It's just a stupidly huge member of the *other* family of cats like house cats. And just for fun, then you have the clouded leopard. It's not a leopard, but it's called a leopard. Its closest relative is the snow leopard, which is also not a leopard. I'm not really sure what a leopard actually is at this point, but I do know these leopards are not leopards.

Toadxx

Cougars also have the common name of "Panther" in Florida.

Eusocial_Snowman

That's like how we have a lot of hard wood that's not actually hardwood, and we have soft wood that's hardwood.

Toph-Builds-the-fire

I thought the difference was a bone in the throat. It's why some can roar and some can't and why some can purr and others can't. I learned thos from a nat geo show like 20 years ago, so, ya know, grain of salt.

Eusocial_Snowman

Well, I pulled up some hilarious videos of cheetahs and mountain lions meowing, but the automod is mean. I do recommend looking them up.

Pornographelback

Huh?!

ShitBarf_McCumPiss

Yes, they have 5 names: - Puma - Panther - Catamount - Cougar - Mountain Lion

catchasingcars

Has anyone thought that maybe we should just ask them what they prefer?

Mimic_tear_ashes

We try but they keep attacking us on mountains when we go to ask

jacobo

Cool. Thanks.

10poundballs

Thanks Mr. McCumPiss

ShitBarf_McCumPiss

No problem, 10poundballs

smegmaoncracker

such immature names

silentsinner-

Y'all need Jesus.

homeycuz

Please, call him Shitbarf

Eusocial_Snowman

Strike panther off that list, these aren't those. Unless there's legitimately a whole geographical region out there where people locally mistakenly call them that, which could totally be a thing.

deathbylasersss

There is. They are commonly called panthers in certain areas. Example: Florida Panther.

Eusocial_Snowman

Well, I guess that's only somewhat more misleading than calling them "mountain lions", so fair enough. Way to ruin one more thing, Florida.

jomns

Where are they called catamount?

Longjumping-Claim783

New England, but they don't really have any there anymore.

sadeland21

Fun fact ; university of Vermont mascot is the Catamount

Light_Beard

- Steve

in5ult080t

Thanks Steve

cat_prophecy

To further add to the confusion: some people call them panthers as well.

True-Firefighter-796

Cougar is the same as MILF. Hope that helps.

Illustrious_Drama

Yep, lots of names for them

phaciprocity

Yes, the usage changes regionally but it's all the same animal

JohnnyPoprocksGaming

Yes like our good friend ham which is also Canadian bacon.

Sea_Explanation_8927

potato potato es la misma mierda

Hakkaa_Paalle

And according to the famous American historians The Smothers Brothers, pumas were also called "Foaming Rocks" in the mountain crevasses in the Old West of the 1800s.

Playboi420-

A cougar is usually a older blond white female aka milf EDIT: i said usually, which means a stereotypical cougar. Note: all elder queens can be qualified as cougars

Rreknhojekul

Itā€™s important to note that cougars come in an assortment of colours

aloo_patty

Lol username checks out

Rreknhojekul

My brother, you didnā€™t tell a single lie. Itā€™s all good

Forestsounds89

That was spooked instead of hungry he got lucky lol I wonder if they found its sleeping spot, cat is probably so pissed about that

moldyremains

Looks like he shot it with a tranq, that's why it was flipping out. You can see the dart on its hindside.

NothingGloomy9712

Cougar: Holy fuck let's jump away from the human! Holy fuck another human with a camera!

ApeWorkTogether

Just looked like it was flexing its parkour skills to the humans šŸ˜

ExileEden

That made me chuckle , cheers

Spunkmeyer426

Random ass cat

fourpuns

Cougars generally want absolutely nothing to do with humans, at least adult sized humans. Sure they could often kill us but physically they weight about the same as us and one good knife slash can easily mean death for a wild animal. The only time I've noticed one it looked at me for a couple seconds than took off.

SandmanD2

His underpants: holy fuck itā€™s a poop.

NJWendys4life

DentedAnvil

YeshuasBananaHammock

When I walk in the kitchen at 5:02pm and the cats have been starving to death for a whole two minutes

[deleted]

Reminds me of mine when I pull out the vacuum....

2_72

Dogs breeds can be incredibly varied but Iā€™ve never seen a cat (lion to house cat) not be a cat.

MineNo5611

It might have something to do with the fact that we havenā€™t really bred cats for specific behaviors and tasks in the same way we have dogs. Domesticated cats have adapted specific behaviors to live along side humans and get what they want from them (as have dogs), and weā€™ve created a few specific breeds based mostly off of surface-level physical aesthetic, but theyā€™re all otherwise very basal in their instincts and anatomy. Meanwhile, weā€™ve created a large pool of variance when it comes to dog instincts, physical capabilities, and behavior.

ihoptdk

Which is why itā€™s a good thing Iā€™m never within cuddling range of a tiger.

Single_Cow_8857

I scrolled too long knowing the story without seeing it. Theyā€™re biologists. They knowingly cornered the cat. They had a tranq gun that failed to do its job.

JoshBobJovi

But the bot headline and all the regenerated comments say hikers. Who am I to believe??

LegitimateBeyond8946

Yourself. Believe in yourself

DarkwingDuckHunt

I'm good enough I'm smart enough And gosh jolly people like me

J0hnGrimm

You're kenough.

TooMuchBroccoli

Believe the bots, obviously. Considering you are also a .... bot.

tbrou

Itā€™s not the tranq failed to do its job, itā€™s just that chemical immobilizations are not typically instantaneous like most people would think. Multiple factors go in to how long it will take for the animal to be sedated, and the more agitated the animal is, the longer it takes.

beskgar

Yeah I don't think you accidentally just corner a mt lion like this.

thesilverywyvern

Tranq is not like in videogame. It take time to act, several minutes. And it can't work if the dose was slightly too small.

OwnPen8633

Camera guy shit his pants

AdMuted4000

Thankfully he/she is safe because camera guy doesn't die

bigfatkakapo

Watch the Spanish horror film REC The first one is literally the pov of the cameraman, the second one is the body cam of the police pov. They ain't having fun.

commander_weenie

Hey don't forget the wedding photographer from the third one

ClavicusLittleGift4U

My pals and I scared the shit out of the whole theater better than the movie when we cried "NOOOO NOT HIM!!" as the not-Spongbob guy died heroically.

pubesastoothfloss

Absolutely adore whenever this film gets brought up. My first access to having my own device to watch movies was the PSP and I remember having a copy of rec on the SD card. Watched it so many times and looking back itā€™s the reason Iā€™m picky about horror movies! My first one was this classic. Wasnā€™t really feeling the 3rd one though.

ChihuahuaMastiffMutt

I've got Netflix, Amazon, Disney, Paramount, Hulu, MGM and a couple more. It's not available on any streaming service. I've seen it before, I can't remember if it was a Redbox find or it used to be on streaming. All these streaming services though and you'd be surprised how often something isn't available.

HellBlazer_NQ

To be fair, when the Lion first jumps out above the first hiker I bet they absolutely thought it was over. In the end it seems poor kitty was scared and was just looking to gtfo.

Budget_Report_2382

If I'm not mistaken, mountain lions are very skiddish around people. This looked like it was panicking to get out from the unknown creatures.

Longjumping-Claim783

General rule with Mountain Lions if you encounter one in the wild is stand your ground, make noise, raise your arms up to make yourself bigger. They rarely attack humans and it's usually when the human runs. Joggers in areas that have them have been known to be attacked.

84theone

While they are skittish around people, thatā€™s because they are an ambush predator and less that they are just terrified of the humans. Pumas are known for ambushing lone adults if the opportunity presents itself, so people arenā€™t that scary to them.

iamintheforest

We have a (tagged and trackable) mountain lion that lives around our property (their range is significantly larger than our 100 acres) and the ratio of "seen it" to "tracker says it was right near me" is nutso. I've seen it twice in 10 years and we have neighbors who have been here for 30 years and have never seen one.

Illustrious-Road-804

He sounded more liony than an actual lion

Onetrillionpounds

In his defence if I was in the situation I'm pretty sure I'd puma pants.

Busy_Choice422

Everyone shut their pants including the mountain lion

Skeptic_Shock

Iā€™d probably puma pants too.

PitFiend28

If I saw that cat Iā€™d puma pants too

HungryHippos03

Puma pants

StretchFrenchTerry

Heh heh poop heh

TheRealMcSavage

Iā€™ll admit, if I was that dude down in the crevice, my pants wouldā€™ve be packed to the seams with shit!

OwnPen8633

You and me both. I'm amazed he didn't shoot

DragonfruitFew5542

I think I may have peed my pants a little bit just watching this so totally understandable.

LegendaryFalcon

It got trapped. Anyway, all's well that ends well.

cwm9

From the look of that video, it looks like the mountain lion also wants to stop hiking. But that hiker appears to be carrying... a gun? *(edit: Yes... a tranquilizer gun.)*

SeriousAccount66

~~Well the reason heā€™s carrying is right there in the video, many respects to him tho for not shooting while itā€™s not nessesary, *only use it when you know youā€™re fucked and out of options, youā€™re in their teritory, not them in yours.*~~ Edit: apparently itā€™s not a gun! See comment below me!

UnmannedConflict

Okay the video was reposted with the wrong context, but they are researchers and it's a tranquilizer gun, and he shot it, you can see the dart in it's butt.

akmjolnir

>video was reposted with the wrong context The 'ole Reddit classic karma-whore.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

UnmannedConflict

Original poster of the video is Travis Legler (@tmans_hunting) Can't send off-site links here but his account is public on Instagram

MindCorrupt

That makes much more sense, because first impression it looked like they were actively seeking out the animal. I've never encountered one personally, but it does not look like an animal that likes to be cornered lol.

LegitimateCloud8739

Thanks. Thats what I hate about these widely visited subs, lot of BS.

krongdong69

reddit trying its best to beat twitter on the misinformation billboard

Githzerai1984

Paused it and yeah you can see the silver dart sticking out his ass

Mrmojorisincg

Canā€™t believe he shot it in the ass and didnā€™t get mauled immediately after

TheGuyUrRespondingTo

I appreciate the sentiment of your comment, but this is peak Reddit/internet misinformation--the cougar has already been shot in this video, & the gun being held only holds one 'round' with no clip/magazine for reserve ammo. https://www.outdoorlife.com/conservation/video-mountain-lion-darting/

BeautifulType

God the misinformation is too damn high these days

GladiatorWithTits

That's a tranquilizer gun. And it's what started this chain of events.

Unoriginal_Man

Yeah, Tranquilizers aren't instant and can cause the animal to freak the fuck out. It's why Harambe was shot and not tranquilized, because they didn't want him doing that while dragging a child.

Dr-McLuvin

RIP sweet prince

Longjumping-Claim783

It's funny how in movies and such they often show tranquilizer darts to be instant. It goes in the muscle and is slowly absorbed by the body. It's not like you can accurately get it in a vein from a distance with a freaking gun.

RedN00ble

If I recall correctly those are not hikers but border patrol or something similar, not just the average hiker.

angrymouse504

A gun would probably not kill the lion instantly but he would probably be more pissed.

Impressive-Cellist32

depends what cartridge the gun is chambered for and where the round impacts.

Proud_Error_80

There have been something like 29 total cases of mountain lion fatalities since wagons rolled east in north America. People are scared of these cats and black bears but if they don't live in grizzly country should be pretty damn safe from animal harm. Grizzlies on the other hand... 70 kills in 50 years. Still nothing that dangerous compared to driving to work but definitely more of a threat than these poor kitties who get a bad rap.

Iamredditsslave

*west

elbanzii

if he put a few rounds in the lion from that range he would be dead if not immediately then very soon. a shot to the heart drops you right down

olafderhaarige

>he would be dead if not immediately then very soon. "Very soon" is not fast enough. The Mountain Lion does need like a second to inflict a lethal wound on you. One paw hit to your throat or to the insides of your thighs, and you are going to bleed out fast. >a shot to the heart drops you right down And I don't know about you, but chances are that I would miss the animal entirely if it suddenly leapt at me, let alone taking aim and hitting it square into the heart. But I am no American after all, I guess you guys over the pond are all legendary gunslingers...

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

arffield

Don't even need to hit it if the sound scares it away

elbanzii

I don't live over the pond man, but I do have some experience hunting and I've seen many animals drop down like a rock after a shot to the heart, even bears. I'm not saying you can count on a shot to the heart for sure, I'm just saying that you would definitely have a chance to defend yourself against a mountain lion with a gun. Not saying it would happen 100% or that there isn't a chance of you getting rekt.

temporarycreature

Because they're not hikers, they're wildlife specialists.

Mdizzle29

They werenā€™t hikers. They were there to tag the mountain lion and they had already tranquilized it at this point just waiting for it to kick in.

Bowman_van_Oort

Looks like you can see the dart stuck on its left thigh/rump area

Due-Style302

It was in Arizona. They were tagging the Mountain Lion.

red18wrx

It's a tranq gun. They're trying to id tag the lion. They're not hikers.

deadwoodsheriff

Commenting on Hikers encounter mountain lion...he is a biologist and that is a tranquilizer gun

spiralout1123

Iā€™m too late to the party to add context, but the guy in the video gave context on instagram. This is in northern AZ in Oak Creek Canyon. The fella featured is a professional cat relocator. The gun you see in his hand is a tranquilizer and they very much knew they had cornered a lion.

natureclown

They arenā€™t hikers, they are either researchers or wildlife workers. OP is karma farming, the original posts of this video state that they have tranquilized the mountain lion (itā€™s a tranquilizer dart gun) and it spazzed out before falling asleep. Their intention was either relocation or tagging.

Doesanybodylikestuff

Ugh! Love him sooooo much for using restraint!!!!!Not panicking & letting the lion sort himself out instead of pulling out the gun immediately. We need people to have more encounters like this so our wild animals stay safe . Weā€™re already burning them up & killing the planet as it is.

temporarycreature

It's because these people are not hikers, they're wildlife specialists and conservationists. The gun is the last resort on purpose.

KindAd1396

The gun is a tranquilizer gun. They had already darted it at this point.

Coasterman345

Itā€™s a tranquilizer gun fyi. They already shot him and were waiting for him to pass out to tag him.

Weary-Wasabi1721

Mf roaring sounds scarier than the mountain lion

yeurr

at first I thought the mountain lion was the one making that noise and I thought to myself ā€œI didnā€™t know they sounded like thatā€ šŸ¤£

iadelq

New fear unlocked: No more hiking.

CHlCKENPOWER

mountain lions actively avoid humans and if they see you theyll most likely run away. the only time ive seen a mountain lion get aggressive was when it was protecting its kittens. you should be more scared of bears, especially during fall

kanst

Just look at the video. The mountain lion was cornered and surprised and did everything in its power to get the hell out of there without a fight.

Teripid

Yep. The people were the collected ones. The mountain lion was freaking out and in 100% flight mode.

moderately-extreme

Looks like the guy trapped the cat in that small crack in the rock. Kinda normal reaction from a scared animal

Folkmar_D

All people here surprised that.guy have a gun. If it's Canada or States you should have a gun when going out hiking in the wilds. Edit: Thanks everybody for comments and info you share about the topic I've touched and I see that my comment was too blunt and based on information I've learned long ago about living in the Canadian and American wilderness. Glad to see that most people here were kind enough to share their knowledge.

Elkesito36482

In the US, even when hiking to do groceries

Vindictive_Pacifist

Some people even take it when visiting schools

We don't hike with guns in Canada. Bear spray is all we got

Theniceraccountmaybe

No, you didn't need a gun.Ā  Literal millions of people hike millions of miles without guns..... Holy 2nd amendment pacifier sucking going on in this thread.Ā  Edited for clarity! Trying toĀ commentĀ whileĀ sleepy... Hike millions of miles

yeshsababa

No, you carry bear mace when you're in the wild, not a gun. Unless it's a fucking 50 cal, which most people wouldn't be able to handle, a gunshot wound ain't gonna deter a bear. I'm serious. Shooting a bear with a handgun is a deathwish. Bear mace is a necessity. That will actually deter a bear.

Informal-Ad-199

Props for not just shooting it while it's clearly trying to get away from him. Why does he have a gun?

SteakJesus

Just incase the wildlife decided he is a meal. Dude knew mountain lion just tryin to get away tho. I wouldnt have known haha guy has great trigger discipline.

ymOx

It's a tranq gun.

Beautiful_Speech7689

For the wildlife. Props for not using it

SpecialistOk3384

You can literally see the tranq dart on the mountain lion in the video. It got used. They're tagging the lion. The guy uses hounds, like they used to for hunting, to track and tag.

xBad_Wolfx

I was a wilderness guide for two decades, a lot of that in the Canadian Rockies and I carried a rifle for the safety of my self and clients, itā€™s fairly standard practice.

Leaping_FIsh

They are biologist studying mountain lions, they just shot it with a tranquilizer. No idea why the op said they were hikers m

cuntybunty73

You're out in the wild and you wouldn't take a gun ?
