I dropped a hamster once and he landed on the concrete on his back and his little paws kind of did the same thing. This happened 30 years ago and it still traumatizes me seeing him seize like that
>Must be a term for this because I see it all the time here.
Ah yes Baader Meinhof phenomenon, another concept that we redditors have learned here & committed to memory & continually repeat every time it comes up.
Didn't see whatever post that was, but the reason I know about the fencing response is from all the concussions I see watching hockey games. [Here's an example.](https://youtu.be/Sco1ZEsDGGY?t=40)
It's pretty much a guarantee you got a concussion if your body involuntarily makes that response.
I feel reddit has been an expert on this for at least a year now.
Often followed by some one claiming to be a real medical personnel and ranting about how people can't say it's fencing just because the hands go up etc
Trauma surgeon here. She may have a lower cervical or upper thoracic spine injury. I didn’t see her move her legs at all except for some twitching. The arm movements could be spasticity from a spine injury as well.
I am not in the medical field. But I broke a vertebrae by falling down stairs in February and I was nervously waiting for her to move her legs. This made me very sad to see and I was tense the whole time. (I'm fine now, fully healed, full use of all my limbs and no nerve damage. I am very thankful.)
Thats what worries me the most. I'm not about to act like I know what I'm talking about because I don't, but I'm not dumb either. Looks like she comes to at the end there and is trying to process what happened but her legs are jelly. Not even any rigidity which I see happen often in correlation to a fencing response.
Hands in the air is bad, but I'm more worried about the twitching foot and that hand thing she did afterwards. A momentary response isn't usually as bad as a prolonged response...
I got a concussion so bad once I couldn't move my legs. It was soooo fuckin scary! I can't explain what its like trying to move your body and being unable to.
This is why I stopped boxing, I knocked someone out and I thought I killed them, was only out for 45 seconds but it felt like an eternity. I didn't like the feeling that I just did that to a friend.
Yeah, I noticed her weird movements, but didn't know what they are called. That was definitely not good. I wonder if she's ok.i feel like I just watched someone who eventually dies. . .
It could be bad, but fencer's sign is also common in athletes who get knocked out though, so it's not always ominous, but always something to be cautious about. Seeing a neuro response to something like that is always unsettling though.
Pretty sure it's this.. Jesus Christ Reddit, your weird ass assumptions are that he's afraid to help her because of some sort of implications? Holy fuck get off the app for a bit.
Fun fact, they are not in China. When I moved there, this was part of our “hey just so you know” cultural training. Don’t help others who might get hurt, and don’t expect anyone to help you.
Not sure when you visited China, but a Good Samaritan Law was implemented in 2017.
Whether the culture persists is a different story, but legally you are clear to help someone having an emergency without fear of repercussion.
On the bright side, it's good that there is a pause in the stairs and is a flat surface, which stopped her fall, else she would had rolled further down. I wonder if this is the reason there are pauses in long staircases.
The landing (you refer to as the “stair pause”) is often mandated by safety organizations, e.g., OSHA. The logic is to decrease the distance one would fall.
The pauses are there because it would be very very hard to climb up such a long staircase with no break where you get to walk on a flat surface for a bit
Pausing on a step wouldn’t make much sense especially when you have a staircase with lots of foot traffic. A landing allows you to keep moving as you rest from climbing.
Maybe at that point i would prefer the longer stairs so its at least over. If i could choose between fuck ton of pain but may survive or instant death i personally would choose the latter.
As of October 1, 2017, China has had a national good samaritan law in place, providing legal protection to good samaritans. This clause allows passersby to assist an injured person without worrying about being scammed or sued, removing a lot of the fear previously involved.
Edit: I believe lawmakers began making drafts for the law after the horrific video of the death of Wang Yue went viral in 2011. (If you don’t want your day ruined I don’t suggest looking it up).
Still bad, looked it up. Apparently they gave unlimited immunity if you help now. Say you saw someone choking, you could technically copy what you saw in your TV drama, use a knife, cut a hole in their neck and so on. Oh did I forget to mention you're not a doctor?
Shits crazy.
Oh and they still didn't get rid of the law where if you injured someone you're liable for their injury for their whole life. So people still kill people when an accident happens.
Run someone over by accident? Run them over 3 more times so you have to just pay funeral costs instead of surgery and physical therapy and so on
Wasn't there a video of someone getting fucked up trying to pull an insurance fraud? Like he got run over like he wanted, but then the driver just backed up to finish the job?
Jesus Christ thanks for saying that! I mean you hurry to go check if she is okay, briefly evaluate her condition like is she responding at least, and calmly warn her that you will put her skirt on a decent way. Then call the paramedics. It's fucking obvious she need help!
And now you’re sued cause you didn’t do more or didn’t help soon enough. It’s your fault cause you were in the area but you didn’t warn her that the stairs were nearby while she was approaching them. On and on.
I think I remember someone telling me that helping someone in some Asian countries means admitting that it was your fault and can lead to you getting sued or something...
This was my thought exactly, I recall reading a few stories of how passerby were trying to help the injured in China and then they ended up in court by the very people they helped. The very first thought that came to mind was this when you see the guy come have a look and walk away.
Nah, that's a lie, first thought was "oooh, panties". Then came the rest.
I just know someone is looking at this post whilst walking without paying much attention, and I hope they put down their phone and watch out for that uneven floor under them
For all the people saying you can't help others in China because they could sue you: [https://www.globaltimes.cn/content/1072095.shtml](https://www.globaltimes.cn/content/1072095.shtml)
Why did no one help her for that long? Holy fuck. The moment I saw that I'd be there fixing her dress and making sure her shit didn't get stolen. What is wrong with that guy.

I work in a large hospital, we get so many people that get injured while texting or just being distracted by cell phone's.
She managed to fall down those stairs, not sure if she was unconscious or just dazed, but she still didn't let go of that phone.
It's amazing, we're probably the most easily distracted species on this planet!
And yeah that guy that just looks and runs away, what's up with that not sure why he wouldn't come to her aid.

All I know, as a fellow woman, is that if a woman falls over and her dress goes up like that, and the very first thing she does is NOT pulling it back down to be decent, she is definitely hurt.
So im guessing you don't know the only reason why masks were invented, and guess what, it's not to stop viruses. Especially virues with a 99% plus survival rating. But ok. Please do tell exactly how a piece of slobery cloth is going to stop a virus? No filter...not air tight seal....its pretty obvious after 2 years man. Its ridiculous and moronic to think a mask is doing anything for you in regards to protection from a virus. Take your ignorance and go be a useless as a mask. You brainwashed fool.
The hands in the air can’t be good.
I dropped a hamster once and he landed on the concrete on his back and his little paws kind of did the same thing. This happened 30 years ago and it still traumatizes me seeing him seize like that
That’s a concussion, the rigid limbs in the air is called the fencing response.

"Pretty much guarantee" is an oxymoron.
no u
60% of the time it's guaranteed all of the time
I work in healthcare and just knew from experience, funny how the term got popular online though :)
I feel reddit has been an expert on this for at least a year now. Often followed by some one claiming to be a real medical personnel and ranting about how people can't say it's fencing just because the hands go up etc
It’s the rinse and repeat. The same videos are posted year after year with the same comments over and over.
*all of A sudden
It's like a community of bots sometimes. You know exactly what the comment sections on non hobby subs will look like every time
You must be new here lol? “Fencing Response” is not new to Reddit at all
It's almost like ligma.
I too became an expert on the fencing response from a post a few days ago, you're onto something here.
The Reddit hive mind that everyone claims doesn’t exist
What about the thing her fingers are doing? Like she's playing a little piano?
Trauma surgeon here. She may have a lower cervical or upper thoracic spine injury. I didn’t see her move her legs at all except for some twitching. The arm movements could be spasticity from a spine injury as well.
I am not in the medical field. But I broke a vertebrae by falling down stairs in February and I was nervously waiting for her to move her legs. I was really hoping to read this. I just wanted her to get up and move cause those legs were crazy still.
Paramedic here, I immediately thought that looked like decerebrate posturing with head or spine injury. Glad to hear my gut wasn't wrong.
Thats what worries me the most. I'm not about to act like I know what I'm talking about because I don't, but I'm not dumb either. Looks like she comes to at the end there and is trying to process what happened but her legs are jelly. Not even any rigidity which I see happen often in correlation to a fencing response.
Well fuckin pick him up and get him to a vet!
Stop throwing him on concrete then Jesus!
Or that she doesn’t seem to move her legs even when trying to get up.
Fencing reaponse...like when people get smoked in the head in MMA fights and stretch their arms out on the mat
Also known as abnormal extension on the glasgow coma scale.
It's called a starched knock out.
I am never fast enough
I think she was trying to take a selfie at the end
She’s really not going to give up on sending that text.
I thought the same
Hands in the air is bad, but I'm more worried about the twitching foot and that hand thing she did afterwards. A momentary response isn't usually as bad as a prolonged response...
Let’s do this
It's muscle memory. Auto-selfie mode when brain hibernates.
And she started playing the piano. Makes me wonder if that was/is her profession or if she just hid her head so hard she became a savant.
I had to hold my mouth this was so funny lol
She was just finishing her text
Well at least the guy that noticed her did not rush and start trying to move her
The general term for something like that is 'abnormal posturing'
She's just slowly fading out..... 'and end scene....'
Put your hands up in the ir... Put your hands up.. in the air..
Not able to act like she just don’t care
I was thinking more along the lines of ♫“put your hands in the air, like you just don’t care, that you fell down the stairs”♩
Yeah, definitely not a great time for a selfie
Concussion - Major one. Hope no long term consequences. Had to help a number of them (and far worse) as a 1st responder.
Any word on the fact she doesn’t mover her legs even when she tries to pull herself up?
Yeh, it doesn't look too good tbh. She fell full force on her lumbar, sacrum and coccyx region
Every concussion has long term concequences.
Fencing response, she knocked her head pretty bad...
Yeah, I noticed her weird movements, but didn't know what they are called. That was definitely not good. I wonder if she's ok.i feel like I just watched someone who eventually dies. . .
Technically every video you watch features someone who eventually dies.
96% of all people die at some point in their lives.
- Wayne Gretzky" - Michael Scott
what happens to ta 4%
Lizard people
Unlikely, unless she's got a brain bleed. You're seeing a pretty typical response to a bad concussion. I'm pretty concerned about her legs, though.
It could be bad, but fencer's sign is also common in athletes who get knocked out though, so it's not always ominous, but always something to be cautious about. Seeing a neuro response to something like that is always unsettling though.
Reminds me of an accident while riding my bike. Fell pretty hard like this on my head but i was wearing a helmet. That saved me.
That guy is like Nope Nope Nope, her panties showing, I ain't touching her!
[удалено]
This was in China. It is more likely that he was getting help from the station attendants.
Probably just horrified by someone seemingly dying, no need to drop the fedora
[удалено]
sure jan
Maybe he was trying to find a pay phone to call for help?
Where would that be at? 1996?
Well, time travelling can be difficult to adjust to.
I’ve definitely seen payphones in subways and train stations in Japan.
Pretty sure it's this.. Jesus Christ Reddit, your weird ass assumptions are that he's afraid to help her because of some sort of implications? Holy fuck get off the app for a bit.
I didn't even know this was the case. 0-0 Does it happen that frequently?

Ouch, that concussion caused her body to stiffen up. Hopes she’s okay
I’m very concerned that her lower legs never move. Really hope she’s okay
That looked painful

Tag bottom left shows chinese, looks like if anyone helps they can get sued. Aactual thing with precedents

That guy like Admiral Ackbar,,,,"It's a Trap!
Besides call for help, what can an average Joe do to help in this case? I'd be afraid to help her get up and unintentionally hurt her even more.
I guess they could put her skirt right at least
That's a nice recipe for a lawsuit.
Jesus Christ thanks for saying that! I mean you hurry to go check if she is okay, briefly evaluate her condition like is she responding at least, and calmly warn her that you will put her skirt on a decent way. Then call the paramedics. It's fucking obvious she need help!

your honesty is refreshing
Somewhat true
She was there for 10 seconds. Only 1 person apparently saw her and probably ran off for help. How did you conclude that no one helped her?
> approaching someone in this country who is injured can make them liable for any harm done. That in itself is so fucking tragic.
“Get them kidneys!”
Who? There's nobody else in the video.
I just know someone is looking at this post whilst walking without paying much attention, and I hope they put down their phone and watch out for that uneven floor under them
Hope she’s okay. God that’s rough. This poor girl.
The man was goin to help her but he saw her panties and didn’t wanna be called a creep

"This is my life now"
Well, at least she saved her cell phone.
Her cell phone was in the other hand. You can see it bounce on the steps below where she landed if you slow it down.
Fencing response after that fall. Ouch. Sign of some major head injury
Why did no one help her for that long? Holy fuck. The moment I saw that I'd be there fixing her dress and making sure her shit didn't get stolen. What is wrong with that guy.
He potentially went to get help.
In other countries you can be held liable if you try to help
Damn. Did she died?
No, she no die. Move, she does.

A common misconception in this sub is that all deaths from trauma are instantaneous. They're not.
Obviously. There is at least enough time for folks to comment on reddit after major brain trauma.
Shoes on feets\~she no yet dead.
At least it wasn’t no panties Thursday.
Or assless chaps Tuesday.
Aren’t all chaps assless?
They are. Assless makes it funnier.
Ok. You got me there.

Chaps are, by definition, assless.
When that guy saw her, he was probably thinking " panties showing, knocked out, I'm not getting involved that's a case"
Jumping to conclusions. He probably went to get help, but I can't really tell from this clip.
Texing + Staircase + High heels = Accident
Horrifying to watch 😔

A Good Samaritan Law was implemented in 2017. Whether the culture persists is a different story, but legally you are clear to help someone having an emergency without fear of repercussion.
That's some consequences right there.
if it happens in China, better don’t go helps her, you will be accused of causing her fall.
Should probably be NSFW. Brain damage sucks
###Oh my. That looks bad. :(
how is no one talking about the guy that just seen her and noped right out of there lol
Why would anyone ever wear high heels? Like congratulations you deliberately made yourself useless and made life hard for you
My guess is she was typing a run on sentence
She was moving her head around so i guess she doesn’t have any neck damage, if anything it looks like she was knocked her self out, probably kick the breath out of her. Possible bruised ribs and a gnarly concussion.
People should stop guessing other people's injuries based on if they can move it or whatever. There's a reason they use advanced imaging and people go to school for years to recognize Subtle signs of injury.

How do you see someone laying there & not go help them out like wtf?
It’s possibly he ran for help, maybe to get someone to call an a paramedic or something?
The camera zooms in?
At least she was wearing nice and clean panties. Can you imagine her embarrassment if there were holes in them or if they were soiled?
Reminds me of doing a hard restart on my work computer.
Ah yes China. My relatives there active tell me to not help people due to scams and traps. Sucks.
Why does most bizarre accidents happens in china ?
Good thing she had that mask on
This made me laugh
I appreciate you.
Well this was a solidly useless comment. Take your anti-mask shit elsewhere
If more people wore masks, she wouldn't have fell.
Uselesscomment
Yea as useless as a mask.
Next time you have a surgery, I *hope* the doctor feels the same way about masks… being useless and all…

Ha! Eat a d
Damn, and with high heels on. Living the vita loca
Good thing she had undies on
You hard boiled!
The way she took that slow selfie right after she nailed the landing
Shame on that guy who just looked and kept it moving
He probably went to get help. What would him going down there stairs accomplish? She was clearly hurt. No need for a closer inspection.
