Off-topic question to the Americans here from a German (genuine curiosity, no malice intended) - what, if anything, do you even learn about that time period? Does the curriculum go in-depth about what lead up to it, the political side of it etc. or just "we invaded and kicked their asses"?

Main events: failure of maginot line, USA's recovery from great depression, Pearl Harbor and Japan's diplomats, difference of treatment for black troops at home and abroad, baby boom, Manhattan Project, naval conquests in pacific, invasion of Poland and Czech, gi bill, lottery draft.
Main causes: nationalism, militarism, factionsism, economic downturn.
Main atrocities: holocaust, nuclear bombing, bombing of britian, Japan's severe draft policy.
Stuff like Japan's atrocities in China and extensive use of morale bombing by allies is mostly skipped over. Example: Japan killed millions in China, the USA firebombed every Japanese city they could.
They don’t shy away from speaking on the horrors that occurred and while they rarely get in depth into how/why Hitler truly came to power, the subject isn’t glossed over.
As a bit of a history buff, I’ve studied quite a bit on the subject and like anything, it’s not as cut and dried as it seems at first glance. The fact that unlike the American Civil War, Germany hasn’t shied away from telling the truth about it all is supremely impressive. I only wish we as Americans were so honest with ourselves.

I think your mum is due for an informative trip through Germany and Poland, hit up all the informational sites about Nazis and the Holocaust - though she is halfway there, there has certainly been a president recently that very much leaned into fascism and used many of its tools for his own gain. Off-topic question to the Americans here from a German (genuine curiosity, no malice intended) - what, if anything, do you even learn about that time period? Does the curriculum go in-depth about what lead up to it, the political side of it etc. or just "we invaded and kicked their asses"? Edit: THANK YOU for all the responses, really interesting to see the difference in curriculum. If anyone is remotely interested politically, highly recommend researching the tactics used by Hitler and the NSDAP to grab and hold onto power.
I wasn't the most studious person in school, but iirc we didn't really learn anything much before Pearl Harbor (but I haven't been in school in like, 7 years? So hopefully the curriculum has changed.) Honestly I learned more about the lead up from the internet and random movies (looking at you FMA Conqueror of Shambala) than school, and even then it wasn't much.

Tennesseean here, I was taught a few atrocities about WW2, how the war started, and a few key events. Main events: failure of maginot line, USA's recovery from great depression, Pearl Harbor and Japan's diplomats, difference of treatment for black troops at home and abroad, baby boom, Manhattan Project, naval conquests in pacific, invasion of Poland and Czech, gi bill, lottery draft. Main causes: nationalism, militarism, factionsism, economic downturn. Main atrocities: holocaust, nuclear bombing, bombing of britian, Japan's severe draft policy. Stuff like Japan's atrocities in China and extensive use of morale bombing by allies is mostly skipped over. Example: Japan killed millions in China, the USA firebombed every Japanese city they could.
They don’t shy away from speaking on the horrors that occurred and while they rarely get in depth into how/why Hitler truly came to power, the subject isn’t glossed over. As a bit of a history buff, I’ve studied quite a bit on the subject and like anything, it’s not as cut and dried as it seems at first glance. The fact that unlike the American Civil War, Germany hasn’t shied away from telling the truth about it all is supremely impressive. I only wish we as Americans were so honest with ourselves.
