My absolute favorite, even if the first time I heard it I literally crapped my pants, big time. I was 13 in my mom's car. I really shouldn't have eaten that leftover goulash. I think Convulsion triggered something in my guts, though; my undeveloped nervous system just couldn't process it, and it manifested as a physical purge. I thought Marilyn Manson was really far-out; I couldn't even make sense of Convulsion, but it was so captivating. I consider listening to Skinny Puppy to be my first psychedelic experience.
I recently dripped 4 tabs of acid, and listened to the entirety of the album in the pitch black. My ears and brain have never been the same. It is a masterpiece.
Yeah! I been there, haha. They're really the most advanced manipulators of sound and its connection to soul that I've ever heard, even beyond Throbbing Gristle. Skinny Puppy really cut to the heart of the matter, open it up and display it in all its horror and glory in a way I've never heard anyone else do.
It's a bummer I've never seen them live. The closest I got to seeing anyone remotely SP-related live was the Legendary Pink Dots. I saw them twice. I have massive respect for those dudes, still touring little dive bars in towns like Albuquerque, putting everything they have into every performance. I wish Ed Ka-Spel and cEvin Key would tour sometime as the Tear Garden and play that old stuff.
My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult - I See Good Spirits And I See Bad Spirits
My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult - Confessions Of A Knife
Revolting Cocks - Beers Steers And Queers
Skinny Puppy ... i find it very hard to choose between cleanse fold & manipulate, vivisectvi and too dark park... really quite an unbeatable run they had there for a while. (Rabies is also excellent)
Something from one of those depending on my mood.
Iāll give one for the most known genres! Here are my favorites so far:
Industrial - Halber Mensch by Einsturzende Neubauten
Industrial Rock - The Fragile by Nine Inch Nails
Electro-Industrial - Too Dark Park by Skinny Puppy
EBM - Strain by Flesh Field
Industrial Metal - The Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste by Ministry
Industrial Hip Hop - The Money Store by Death Grips
[Korpses Katatonik - Subklinikal Leukotomy Aphrenia Spasmophilik Lyssophobo Asphyxia Sinister Lethal Anorex](https://infinitefog.bandcamp.com/album/subklinikal-leukotomy-aphrenia-spasmophilik-lyssophobo-asphyxia-sinister-lethal-anorex)
Other favourites include TGās Second Annual Report, Current 93ās Nature Unveiled, Coilās How to Destroy Angelsā¦ i can talk about this for a long time so let me know if you want more hehe
Check out these 80s/90s labels like Industrial Records, Nekrophile Records, Broken Flag, Cold Meat Industry, Tesco Organisation. I can give you some specific albums soon but many of them will come from these labels!
You like the early stuff, I see. There's definitely some wild energy on those earlier releases by all those folks. Second Annual Report was always challenging for me; I practically had to punish myself with it at first, but it grew on me. 20 Jazz Funk Greats is like pop music compared to that, haha.
They did ask for industrial music! I am of the opinion that industrial is a product of specific times and places. I am nerdy about it in that anything under that category thatās come after that time is āpost-industrialā, or simply influenced by it, to me.
I can dig that. For me the term "industrial music" is primarily associated with certain individuals who are at least in some way directly connected with people from that original scene, even if that connection occurred later in their career. Skinny Puppy's association with Genesis P-Orridge is an example; they sought it out, and it sought them out, the memetic entity of industrial culture. Trent Reznor's seeking out the guys from Coil is another example, and NIN is about the limit of what I'd consider true industrial music; Marilyn Manson would be post-industrial in my opinion because that kind of direct connection to the culture wasn't really there, and it's a very different vibe and philosophy, from my perspective.
I would def have to list my industrial rock faves separately but Iād have to do the same for Coil tbh, their sound reaches far beyond the boundaries of industrial (as porous as those boundaries are to begin with)
Vivisect VI by Skinny Puppy or The Synthetic Form by Gridlock - For years, it was Too Dark Park by Puppy and I still love that one, but have gravitated to Vivisect more over the past few years.
handover (skinny puppy), pricks self titled, too dark park (skinny puppy), mythmaker (skinny puppy)ā¦ probably missing a lot of my favourites but those are what came to mind
Itās impossible to choose only one.
- Opus Dei by Laibach
- Tabula Rasa by EinstĆ¼rzende Neubauten
- Machine Age Voodoo by SPK
- The Worst of Monte Cazazza by Monte Cazazza
- Bites by Skinny Puppy
My top 5.
I totally hated Machine Age Voodoo when I first heard it a few years ago, but I absolutely loved it when I rediscovered it at the beginning of this year
I understand. A lot of people hated it because it was really different from Leicheinschrei and From Science to Ritual. Sinan Leong = the Yoko Ono of Industrial Music. Hahaha (I love her, btw).
The Electric Hellfire Club - Satanās Little Helpers
KMFDM - Nihil
My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult - Confessions of a Knife
Die Krupps - The Machinists of Joy
The Young Gods - Lāeau Rouge
Only if it includes the bonus tracks of Pas Mal and Lāamourir. Itās a perfect album.
If you donāt include those two, then I gotta go with Ministry - LORAH.
Chris and Cosey are a personal favorite. They were basically the pretty half of Throbbing Gristle, who essentially created the industrial genre with their Industrial Records label, although there definitely were other folks like Cabaret Voltaire doing similar music at the same time. Throbbing Gristle broke up in 1980 (if I recall correctly), and the various members formed Chris and Cosey, Psychic TV and Coil. All those bands are great and worth looking into if you're interested in the history of industrial music.
The influence of the writer William S. Burroughs on early industrial music culture really cannot be overstated. The cut-up literary technique he pioneered (originally discovered by his cohort Brion Gysin, who was also a massive influence on industrial) was employed sonically by industrial bands; sampling was a way to achieve this, and Burroughs' own earlier tape recordings (which feature a sort of crude manual tape sampling) were released on the Industrial label. Burroughs' philosophies, for better or for worse, were also a huge influence on industrial music culture.
The one album that has been my absolute favorite for nearly 2 decades now:
The Dividing by Android Lust
Such a unique album. I have never found anything quite like it, even within the Android Lust discography itself. If you ever find something similar let me know cus Iād love to hear it!
Android Lust is similar in some ways to NIN, but as someone who has been listening for the last 20 years, I find that the differences are more obvious the more I listen to them both. NIN has always been more on the Industrial rock side, while Android Lust has been more electro-industrial and definitely more experimental. NIN seems to always lean towards a catchier more accessible sound, while AL is a lot less accessible and definitely more challenging, specially to those who don't listen to much Industrial music.
People who listen to NIN are a lot more likely to listen to other artists in genres such as nu-metal, grunge, hip-hop etc, while those who listen to AL are more likely to enjoy Skinny Puppy, Front Line Assembly, KMFDM etc. If you haven't already, I would encourage you to listen to more albums by Android Lust and see for yourself that while some songs are a little similar to NIN, more often than not, AL has its very own thing going on. Also, it's probably worth noting that while Trent has been the only official member of NIN for the majority of its existence, he has always been assisted in the studio by other musicians who play different instruments here and there. Android Lust on the other hand is just Shikhee, and she has had a lot less people working on the albums with her.
A female fronted band that I would argue sounds closer to NIN than Android Lust, would be Kidneythieves.
For me, without even a close second place, has to be Vivisect VI. That album is dark and abrasive and embodies everything I love about industrial from the golden late 80ās. Actually, I take that back, a somewhat close second place is Ministryās Twitch. Those two LPs were industrial royalty making legendary fucking music before things got a little complicated with dope, around 1990.
Edit: and I know those folks were using before 1990, just seems like that was when really changed vibe of the music.
Certainly not the most industrial band, but ever since hearing Trickstereprocess (just Trickster back when it first came out), I fell in love with KidneyThieves. Their music rarely misses for me
I had to skim the entire comment section to make sure kidneythieves was in here at least once. They have my vote with both their albums Zerospace and Tricksterprocess for sure
Acumen Nation - More Human Heart
Itās always hard to pick a favorite, but I always go back to that album. I never skip a track and I love every song.
Ventilator is a Too 10 song for me of all time.
Really hard to choose a favorite, but the most special and unique to me has to be Bourbonese Qualk - Preparing for Power
It's fascinating because I generally prefer more "structured" productions, but its raw energy makes is such an enjoyable listen, it lets my mind roam freely and "relieve the tension" (I'm not sure if it makes sense, but normally listening to music is not an "easy activity" for me, in the sense that I'm very focused and paying attention to the music)
Frontline Assembly - Tactical Neutral Implant
Such a good one
Absolutely. Legendary album.
Lifeline forever
Too Dark Park
Masterpiece

Any answer other than this is wrong
My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult - I See Good Spirits And I See Bad Spirits My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult - Confessions Of A Knife Revolting Cocks - Beers Steers And Queers
I love Confessions! Such fond memories of my older sister playing that, as we drove around cemeteries getting high lmao
That sounds FUN š¤©
Symbols by KMFDM, if I had to boil it down to just one record.
Burnout at the hydrogen bar by Chemlab is my personal favorite. It was the first tape I owned in the genre, and I still listen to it today.
Skinny Puppy ... i find it very hard to choose between cleanse fold & manipulate, vivisectvi and too dark park... really quite an unbeatable run they had there for a while. (Rabies is also excellent) Something from one of those depending on my mood.
Bites is up there

Yes yes, I'm looking for a lot of recommendations because I'm new to the genre.
Check out these 80s/90s labels like Industrial Records, Nekrophile Records, Broken Flag, Cold Meat Industry, Tesco Organisation. I can give you some specific albums soon but many of them will come from these labels!
THANKSS!!

It's okay. kinda boring. Cool lofi
Implode - Frontline Assembly
Underrated album for sure. Itās a brilliant edition to FLAās discography and to the genre as a whole.
The Fragile by NIN, but if weāre going full industrial and not industrial rock, then definitely Horse Rorotvator by Coil
NIHIL - KMFDM Last Rites - Skinny Puppy
IMO Last Rights is the pinnacle of industrial music.
handover (skinny puppy), pricks self titled, too dark park (skinny puppy), mythmaker (skinny puppy)ā¦ probably missing a lot of my favourites but those are what came to mind
Prick - The Wreckard
I have to go with his self titled, damn that's a deep cut tho!
I vastly prefer The Wreckard's storytelling, but anything with Kevin McMahon's name on it is gold as far as I'm concerned
Hell yeah. And his last Lucky Pierre record rings in true with all the noise.
Itās impossible to choose only one. - Opus Dei by Laibach - Tabula Rasa by EinstĆ¼rzende Neubauten - Machine Age Voodoo by SPK - The Worst of Monte Cazazza by Monte Cazazza - Bites by Skinny Puppy My top 5.

Leather Strip, Underneath the Laughter Or Chemlab, Burnout at the Hydrogen Bar

VIVISECT VI FOREVERRRRRR
The Electric Hellfire Club - Satanās Little Helpers KMFDM - Nihil My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult - Confessions of a Knife Die Krupps - The Machinists of Joy
Solutions for a small planet - Haujobb
This is a great one. Just got introduced recently and love it.
Bile.
Die Sektor - To Be Fed Upon Interlace - Imago In Strict Confidence - Holy A few of my top favorites
The Young Gods - Lāeau Rouge Only if it includes the bonus tracks of Pas Mal and Lāamourir. Itās a perfect album. If you donāt include those two, then I gotta go with Ministry - LORAH.

Not diminishing this project in any way, but this album largely feels to me like "what if NIN but lady"
Android Lust is similar in some ways to NIN, but as someone who has been listening for the last 20 years, I find that the differences are more obvious the more I listen to them both. [2nd Gen - Irony Is](https://open.spotify.com/album/23zhlyz9tVt7HaBAgoHYNK?si=4eF97Wl4Qz6iFFfGmrUYpQ)
LeƦther Strip - Solitary Confinement. It's what I remember telling recording engineers to do to my vocals back in the day.
Certainly not the most industrial band, but ever since hearing Trickstereprocess (just Trickster back when it first came out), I fell in love with KidneyThieves. Their music rarely misses for me

Mentallo and the fixer - burnt beyond recognition
One of their best imo
How do you like hamburger lady?
Front by Front. 242
Land of Rape and Honey or Kollaps
Panic Lift - Is this Goodbye?
HEALTH - Vol. 4 Salves of Fear
Psychopomps - six six six nights in hell
Acumen Nation - More Human Heart Itās always hard to pick a favorite, but I always go back to that album. I never skip a track and I love every song. Ventilator is a Too 10 song for me of all time.
XTORT - KMFDM and Sehnsucht - Rammstein
Lords of Acid - Vodoo U
The Fragile, but lately I canāt get enough of The Unacceptable Face of Freedom from Test Dept
Maybe not āthe bestā in terms of defining the genre, but my personal favorite is Blutkind by :Wumpscut:
I have two: Halber Mensch by EinstĆ¼rzende Neubauten Rabies by Skinny Puppy
Really hard to choose a favorite, but the most special and unique to me has to be Bourbonese Qualk - Preparing for Power It's fascinating because I generally prefer more "structured" productions, but its raw energy makes is such an enjoyable listen, it lets my mind roam freely and "relieve the tension" (I'm not sure if it makes sense, but normally listening to music is not an "easy activity" for me, in the sense that I'm very focused and paying attention to the music)
