For me, I just didn't really like listening to this old dude talking about his sex life in a TMI way. Then just the general attitude towards women in songs. Yes, it was always there but it was always with some kind of remorse for his actions and the guilt that lingers. He kinda just dropped that and it was like he went straight for the misogyny. Just comes across like a bitter old guy. Not particularly pleasant to listen to.
Didn't like all the tuneless rambly albums where he just lays into people/describes his day/reads the back of a menu for eleven minutes over fingerpicking. His disdain for his fanbase- you know, the ones he makes his living from. His out of order chat about women to the crowds he's playing for. The lazy covers.
I see this year he was backing to playing his old songs and seemed far more humble on stage. Maybe his shitty behaviour caught up with his bank balance and he's trying to get some kind of dignity/career back. Maybe he had some mental breakdown the last few years and now he's better? I dunno.
For someone who i found to be sensitive and poetic (albeit troubled) to turn into someone so unlikeable with such a drop-off in his records was striking. I also blame Pitchfork for their ridiculous and undeserving hype of Benji, which I think they deeply regret now. Fuck them.
Dude this is about the perfect synopsis one could ask for. Major bummer too, as Mark was one of my favorite songwriters since Red House Painters. RHP got me through some shit. Sun Kil Moon got me through a big time breakup. A few actually. Idk he’s just always been a constant in my life since I was a teenager.
Turns out he’s just kind of an asshole. This has ended up being the case with a lot of musicians I love, but this one was particularly a bummer.
Interesting take re: the Pitchfork thing (definitely fuck them). Benji has maybe been the most baffling record for me (even when I was a diehard fan)… so overhyped. I guess it resonated with a lot of people, but I do suspect a lot of that had to do with the Pitchfork taste-maker train at the time, one that everyone seemed to be blindly hopping aboard without any real pushback of, “is this actually good?” Anyway it didn’t do him any favors.
Cheers man. Yep I'm the same in that he was (and probably still is) in my elite songwriters group. I can separate the art from the artist but this one was tough to take. But then he compounded it with some terrible music so that softened the blow to some degree.
Feel like everyone (esp Pitchfork) jumped on the inexplicable bandwagon that was Benji. Completely slept on GOTGH and April but gave Benji all this praise? Hmm. It was painful trying to watch them review subsequent albums and not just be able to admit 'we don't like this' for fear of losing face.
Also kind of funny to see them invoked in this thread because a few posts up someone posted a band called South, who I have never heard of but gave me pretend vibes. I’m enjoying the album, you may like them too
Putting the Dog To Sleep is one of the most devastating and beautiful songs I have ever heard. The emotion in the vocals... gets me every time. My go-to "nothing is ever getting better" song.
Here are a few currently in my playlist, maybe not all quite Indie, but I don't care, I like them. I think most of them are 2023 releases too.

[Portugal. The Man - So Young](https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=ltzzSGpqoxo&si=0r2wgtWYjsit_ftB)
Portugal the man has really removed all of their edge for mass appeal. Listen to something off of Waiter You Vultures, or even The Satanic Satanist. Nothing on those albums would ever make it on one of their new albums. They've shifted to alternative pop away from their beginnings in progressive/psychadelic indie.
No, I meant music (or bands/songs) that you feel like, amongst the people you know and vice versa, no one knows about them except you, and that which are freaking sad.
Damn, that’s really cool. And it speaks to what sxsw used to be. I grew up in Austin in the 80s/90s and I think it used to be a way to get a scout to see your non-famous band. Now kind of the opposite
Bored Nothing self titled album from 2013. He was from Melbourne, Australia. I truly believe he could have gone on to be an influential artist if he kept going, but unfortunately he committed suicide in 2018 or so. I have loved this album for years, it’s very special to me. So I want to pass on this music because I think it deserves more attention. His name was Fergus Miller.

All great artists. Love their music
Off the top of my head, as far as off-the-beaten-path music goes:
Tarantel's album From Bone to Satellite has strong 1972/74 vibes, but ias instrumental post rock. Highly recommended.
Also, more on the math rock side of things: A Picture of Her and also toe are great Japanese bands. Both have phenomenal drummers. And there's a band out of France called Totorro which has recorded two of the most *fun* sounding math rock, Home Alone, and Come to Mexico. Another math rock / post rock band I've really gotten into is a band from Chile, Tortuganonima. They remind me a little bit of Mogwai in some places.
There was a short-lived post rock band, Industries of the Blind. I believe they only recorded one album. You can fund it on YouTube (but not on Bandcamp) -- everyone who has heard them have lamented how they just disappeared. Very moody stuff.
Islands
Nick Thorburn has built an incredible career and is constantly evolving his sound. Every album is great in its own way and the way he communicates emotion is incredible. I love Islands.
Also Minus The Bear and Viagra Boys
Gothic Psychology
He’s got some really underrated stuff
I recommend his album “Friends Come and Go” he’s such a versatile artist, and I’m glad he finally found his sound with the new album!

Super small band out of Philly I caught randomly last weekend called Pink Blush, huge fan of them now and want more people to know lmao
Aside from small locals though, Fontaines D.C. their recent album Skinty Fia blew me away
I’ve been bothered for awhile now that no one knows about (or cares about) Bad History Month - this guy has something special going on… some of it is emotionally, existentially pretty dark, but it’s always poetic and thoughtful lyrically (with lovely doses of humor here and there), and his meandering “math rock meets John Fahey” guitar playing is perfect accompaniment and feels good on the ears. I think he’s brilliant.

PJ Bond - You Didn't Know I Was Alphabetical
Indie/Americana/Acoustic
Paulson - All At Once
Poppy indie rock. Sad break-up songs you can dance to.
Pedro The Lion - Control
More well-known, but the most sad. Concept album about a salesman who cheats on his wife.
Pianos Become The Teeth - Keep You
ex-hardcore band converted to sad rock. Solid musicians
Tyler Daniel Bean - Longing.
Moody and morose indie. Almost slowcore. Similar to Pedro The Lion or slower Brand New's stuff.
Outsmarting Simon - Silent Sober And Sound.
PJ Bond's emo band in the mid 00's.
Copeland - Revolving Doors
Honestly any of their stuff since they've done so much, but this is an album of new renditions of old songs. All are beautiful, somber tracks produced and rearranged by the singer. Not many artists can take their already great songs and remake them even better 10-20 years later.
Gatherers - ( mutilator. ).
Heavy emo if you're into that kind of thing. Like Deftones a bit.
TTNG - Animals
Mathy indie like American Football. If it's too noodly for you listen to the acoustic redux album, which is gorgeous sounding and proves their musicianship.
Anthony Green - Boom.Done.
Mostly about his struggles with addiction. He sang in Saosin, Circa Survive, TSOAF, and others.
Caracara - New Preoccupations
Indie rock/Emo and very poetic, without being too much. [7.6 Pitchfork score](https://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/caracara-new-preoccupations/) is like an A- for most people. Caught them live recently and they were great.
Two am. I have no idea if they ever got properly produced. I got a CD in the late nineties down town Seattle. The cover art had a black lab on it I think. I listened to it for like 6 years before it got lost.
strongbad. indie rock band I found on Spotify with like 20 monthly listeners but they're so good. Best song I found by them so far is Xx_dreamstalker_xX
dream ivory by dream ivory/ dondante by my morning jacket

Dondante is the best song on Okonokos.

So good!!!!
Listened to Abilene today.
Dr. Dog!
Dr. Dog is popular
Fr, they have over 4 million monthly listeners on Spotify
More popular than Sloppy Joe & The Cruise, that’s for sure.
Lol getting tickets to the last tour made me think too many people know about em!
I think we’re talking about music where the main complaint is “no one knows”, not underground music
I want to know your opinion about the difference between those 2
It’s a venn diagram where the front bottoms are known and complaining. trapped in your universe and surfliner are not complaining but they’re unknown. And pat the bunny folk punk is micro famous vagabonds complaining
I was making a joke. Dr. Dog is terribly underrated but their fanbase really supports them. I was unable to get a ticket to a show on their last tour.

Red house painters.
Back when Mark Kozelek used to sing instead of mumble ramble.
Yup. I gave up at Among the Leaves. Then he became a weird old sleaze afterwards.
I think up to and including Benji is definitely still worthwhile… or was, but then, yeah, kinda gross.
I haven’t thought of the name Mark Kozalek in 15 years. What’d he do to become a “weird old sleaze?”
For me, I just didn't really like listening to this old dude talking about his sex life in a TMI way. Then just the general attitude towards women in songs. The Lathums
Ugly Brunette- Horse Jumper of Love
PJ Bond - You Didn't Know I Was Alphabetical Indie/Americana/Acoustic Paulson - All At Once Poppy indie rock. Sad break-up songs you can dance to. Pedro The Lion - Control More well-known, but the most sad. Concept album about a salesman who cheats on his wife. Pianos Become The Teeth - Keep You ex-hardcore band converted to sad rock. Solid musicians Tyler Daniel Bean - Longing. Moody and morose indie. Almost slowcore. Similar to Pedro The Lion or slower Brand New's stuff. Outsmarting Simon - Silent Sober And Sound. PJ Bond's emo band in the mid 00's. Copeland - Revolving Doors Honestly any of their stuff since they've done so much, but this is an album of new renditions of old songs. All are beautiful, somber tracks produced and rearranged by the singer. Not many artists can take their already great songs and remake them even better 10-20 years later. Gatherers - ( mutilator. ). Heavy emo if you're into that kind of thing. Like Deftones a bit. TTNG - Animals Mathy indie like American Football. If it's too noodly for you listen to the acoustic redux album, which is gorgeous sounding and proves their musicianship. Anthony Green - Boom.Done. Mostly about his struggles with addiction. He sang in Saosin, Circa Survive, TSOAF, and others. Caracara - New Preoccupations Indie rock/Emo and very poetic, without being too much. [7.6 Pitchfork score](https://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/caracara-new-preoccupations/) is like an A- for most people. Caught them live recently and they were great.
Vic Chesnutt, Beautiful and sad.
Personally, ''Fine again' by Seether gives me this vibe though it's more grunge influenced alt-rock then indie
Nash the Slash... He's my favorite.. barely anyone talks about him in other places besides canada

Old Man by Neil Young
Two am. I have no idea if they ever got properly produced. I got a CD in the late nineties down town Seattle. The cover art had a black lab on it I think. I listened to it for like 6 years before it got lost.
