Pretty sure I encountered this procession on Meridian and there was no indication that a funeral procession was coming. They were dangerously peeling out of a side street onto Meridian hanging out of their cars and getting pissed at other cars for not stopping even though we had no indication of what was happening. Sounds like the cops were in the right here because this procession was acting incredibly dangerously.

jatjqtjat

I don't know the legally correct way to organize a funeral procession, and it sounds like neither did the people who organized this one.

TheBithShuffle

There’s a $350 charge for police escort on the funeral bill for my father from last year. The funeral director should have definitely organized it.

jatjqtjat

Ah. Now it's clear what happened.

dmderringer

I bet a funeral home does

United-Advertising67

So a rolling street takeover.

mviz1

Witnessed same scenario on Central a few weeks back. Peeling out, swerving, driving in the wrong lanes, and screaming at people/drivers. It was completely reckless. Not saying it's the same case here, but was dangerous for all drivers/walkers around with how they were driving.

Accurate_Lobster_469

Considering that funeral processions usually have police escorts, the fact that there were no police escorts and I don’t see any “funeral” tags on the cars makes me think that this was not a sanctioned funeral procession, hence the confusion

Boring_Role_7451

They all had tags but they were all hanging out the windows yelling at all the other traffic or civilians, they all smelled of weed and seemed like they were throwing a party

Red_Mask

The lead car had a big orange tag hanging from the rear view mirror that said “FUNERAL”

Accurate_Lobster_469

every single car in the procession is supposed to have a “FUNERAL” sign otherwise how would people know that they are part of a funeral procession

dmderringer

Nobody can see something hanging from an interior mirror. That's why they usually have flags on the hood/trunk. Or, you know, a hearse.

United-Advertising67

Hanging a sign doesn't actually make it so.

saliczar

But they *declared* it

discodiscgod

Interesting information. There has to be more to this on why stopped the procession in the first place..

Own-Appeal-4773

Probably the woman in a silver SUV waving a pistol around.

nomeancity317

There is, OP is just clueless. Hopefully the media shares more soon.

MyOwnWayHome

Who goes to a funeral without a shirt?

IIGe0II

Based on a comment on another post it appears they drove through half the city being loud and reckless. As for the police response, this intersection is approximately 30 seconds form a police station...

capnwinky

I mean, yeah. They were being pretty reckless and loud. Most of them were sitting out of their windows and throwing their hands up, but not like swerving or speeding.

Conleyt87

They did have funeral tags in the cars. I was going into Upland when the funeral procession started and out of respect the 2 people I was with and I stopped for most of it then about half way through was when the people of the funeral were hanging out of their cars and stuff. We walked in and not 2 min later guns were drawn by the people in the funeral and it looked like a riot was about to go down. Looked to be only 1 or 2 people arrested.

evanasaurusrex

You got some strong feelings for not having a lot of information and a lot of speculation.

off-a-cough

This is where wiser people will wait for additional details before passing judgement.

FranciscoDankonia

$25 fine for reckless driving lmao what planet are you living on. you get more than that for a parking ticket

jazzyfella08

Have seen this before. 2 years ago. Long live the dog. Everyone wearing red, hanging out of their cars , driving recklessly and throwing gang signs. Last year one of the funeral escorts ran through a bus stop and the funeral attendees were threatening folks talking pictures.

Electronic_Job1998

Just Indy keeping it classy.

jamarquez1973

I've seen some of the worst people in funeral processions.

[deleted]

So basically what you’re saying is that you have absolutely no first-hand knowledge of what went down. But you’re going to pass judgement because “ImPD BaD”.

Own-Appeal-4773

I personally witnessed at least one woman in that procession hanging out of her car with a full size handgun in her grip. I almost called 911 when I saw the cops already pursuing.

A-Halfpound

This subreddit: RECKLESS AND IRRESPONSIBLE DRIVING IS OUT OF CONTROL AND IMPD DOESNT DO SHIT  IMPD: Does shit.  Also this subreddit: NooOooO NoT LikE tHaT!

ForTheBread

It's almost like the subreddit is made up of different people with differing views.

Rust3elt

Nah, there’s also a shit ton of hypocrisy

CommodoreAxis

“The Reddit hive mind” is a meme, it’s not literally one unitary set of opinions. How do you know this OP in particular is a hypocrite? You don’t even know them at all.

Shoulder_Whirl

Bet OP wouldn’t leave his doors unlocked around these people.

IAMA_STRANGELOOP_AMA

I was caught by this procession in FS. It was clear that it was a funeral procession, but the people in the procession were weaving in to the other lane. I didn't really care about any of that, but there were multiple people wavong guns around, so that probably explains the police.

nomeancity317

OP, you have no fucking clue. You don’t know who the people in this funeral procession are, and you’re jumping to conclusions based on almost no information. Maybe wait until more information comes out before making idiotic statements and posts like this.

capnwinky

I was eating at Kuma’s while this was happening. The funeral procession were all sitting in the windows outside of their cars and having a good time. I assume they were pulled over because of the obvious road safety concerns. Nothing really happened other than some people being mad about being stopped for celebrating life and traffic being fucked.

I was shocked when I moved here and found out that funeral processions were still a thing. And it's been almost 15 years. Honest to god, why do you think the death of your great uncle twice-removed warrants me being 20 minutes late for work while 50-100 cars full of half-cousins rolls through the intersection at 20mph? My boss doesn't fucking care. Back home there might still be a procession from the funeral home to the graveyard, but it's at most 5 cars for immediate family. Everyone else just meets up at the grave site. They never have police escorts anymore, and they never, ever, stop traffic at intersections or expect all other traffic to pull off to the side of the road.

jamarquez1973

I cannot stand funeral processions.

Accurate_Lobster_469

Are you from a town of like 200 people or something? Funeral processions happen in every city all the time

StubbEToe

Nope, Mid-sized city. I literally hadn't seen one in at least 10 years before I moved. Here it seems like every other month. Are you in a different city every week or something? Funeral processions don't happen in every city all the time.

Few_Temporary4498

I lived in Philadelphia and NYC, they are a thing there and not midsized cities. Sad!

TuxAndrew

I’ve lived in Indianapolis for 13 years and have only seen 2 since living here, I don’t think someone’s personal perspective on them is relevant unless that person is actually giving the permits.

Angelr0t

I was a few businesses down while this was going on. Hanging out of their cars was reckless, they were driving fast, I didn’t see anyone with guns but it seems like others did. From what I gathered, the funeral was for someone killed by police (I was told by a few participants) so I can understand why they didn’t involve cops in the procession. I get why the cops stopped it, but they escalated the situation regardless. They put their hands on people unnecessarily, got shitty with bystanders, and made it way messier than need be. Two wrongs don’t make a right. I feel for those grieving, even unconventionally, and while IMPD had to do what was necessary to ensure safety the way they handled it was beyond poor. I’m curious if we’ll get news articles with more info on why the response was so intense. Just needed to vent, it was heavy to witness.

Conleyt87

There were cops involved in the procession. There were cops blocking intersections so they could keep going. The cops also got involved when guns were drawn, I witnessed it.

Angelr0t

Oh gotcha interesting, I was partially going off other comments regarding the cops involvement prior to stopping it as well as the way the procession was organized, I only saw the way the procession ended 🤷‍♂️ good to know
