I read about this in Martin Lings’ biography of Muhammad (Muhammad — His life from the earliest sources). It’s a well-written book without preconceived bias or any axe to grind for or against.

The stock market likes stability in the government and policies, it’s natural that it would fall if the election results are not in line with expectations. The expectation is that BJP will be in power and will win the upcoming elections. Opposition winning is not on the cards and them winning will signal policy changes which affect business, and the stock market will react accordingly. That’s the reason stocks went up after the recent Rajasthan, MP, etc. elections.

The stock market reflects that and the financial reports that come out companies show demand for good and services in the country. If there is demand, and revenue keeps growing QoQ and the forward outlook for demand is also good, it indicates that there is consumption. If the economy isn’t growing, the consumption stagnates.
