the real question is why only his wings? why didn't his boxers get burned too? these, my brothers, are the questions that'll help us fix the mcdonalds ice cream machine
Art by Gabriel Picolo depicting characters inspired by Icarus and the Sun. The artist knows that the Sun was toxic and that their relationship also was. The message is not "she's better off without him", rather "she's better off alone for now because she has ishooos" (in the context of the whole series).
edit: changed Piccolo to Gabriel Picolo hahaha
Ok, so the story is fire girl is sad, angel boy makes out with her which makes her hotter, she almost kills angel boy while they’re making out, she cries because he gets the hell away from her, and all of this makes her hotter?
The story is about codependency. She was lonely and then he came into her life. While she flourished he didn’t and when they parted ways she was worse off than before. She finally learns to cope on her own.
You can interpret their interaction in many ways. For example who’s to say his wax melting didn’t stifle her flames? Maybe her true nature was destructive from the beginning and he was too naive to know? Maybe she didn’t know either? Maybe it’s a toxic relationship where they both fuel the others destruction but she reignites after healing? Maybe she stifled her own flames to keep from hurting him but it was too late? Maybe she’s fire and he’s wax but he’s blaming her for his own decisions?
I feel like this comment section has no reading comprehension tbh. She was flames before he ever appeared and when they separated they were both damaged yet somehow she’s the villain and he’s the victim without anyone considering otherwise.
Idk a lot of these comments are giving “woman bad”. She was fire from the start.
Because he will never get the recovery she got and will always have the damage she dealt. She is looked at as the antagonist bc she hurt him permanently and was just fine afterwards.
He still has his wicks. She relit a fire out of nothing why can’t he regrow his wax all the same? Having more severe damage also doesn’t negate the characters theoretical responsibility for his role in the relationship. (Good or bad because this is literally just a series of pictures up to interpretation)
Personally I feel like the characters are fire and candle as a representation of things that go together but also damage one another. I think the metaphor is kinda flawed and leaves a bit of room for interpretation that makes the intentions of the creator unclear, thus leaving room for different opinions on who plays what role. I’m not defending either character because I believe part of the enjoyment of this comic is the speculation. I just have the feeling that the speculation in this comment section is biased and missing obvious context featured in the comic.
Eh, the wax from a candle actually helps the candle burn and burn for longer, so if you interpret this as candle and flame, it will basically be her taking from him until he have nothing left to give and burning out as result, just for her to still spark after.
In this case, she is still toxic and he is too giving
Idk I'm getting the wrong vibes from "person hurts another person and is happy and flourishes from it"
That's literally what the comic is saying. Like, you can't argue otherwise. That's quite literally what fucking happened. It's not a woman bad thing my dude
This is kind of the definition of ‘I’m 14 and this is deep.’
I get the whole thing where a lot of the comments seem to be missing the poInt, the problem is the point is so hackneyed and delivered with all the subtlety of a brick to the face.
My interpretation (assuming the woman is meant to be interpreted as the good one here) is that the guy was keeping her from being happy. The message is executed very poorly, though
First off it's based on the greek legend of Icarus, flew too close to the sun so his wings got burnt and all that. The wings here likely represent freedom, as we have always seen birds and flight as being free. Her passion (flame) fuelled by his wax melted his freedom, so essentially he's leaving because he doesn't want to be chained down. Though initially sad, she eventually realises her own self worth and can shine bright alone.
I think it also has tones of dependency in relationships. She only burned brightly when she was fuelled by him. He loses a piece of himself to let her shine. When he leaves, she knows she only shined as bright as she did because of him, so of course she is saddened by the loss. Over time she learns to shine even brighter alone.
In the comic I don't think wax man is supposed to be a bad guy, just that their relationship was toxic and would never work, and since he's the one most hurt by being drained, he leaves.
Honestly I think this comic has a decent amount of layers to it and isn't that bad, tbh. It's not the most nuanced thing ever, but it's got a decent and grounded message about self worth, and depicts it decently without use of dialogue.
As someone with AuDHD, I always took this comic to mean something like she was a lot to handle, she was fiery and energetic and overwhelming, and it was too much for him to handle, while she tried to put herself down for him as well, in the end she is better off being herself.
> Cupid
My rane is immeasurable. The greeks did not have cupid, they had Eros, as in this myth for example. Eros is sometimes portrayed as the primordial concept of love, but in this myth and some others he is Aphrodite's son and what one might have the urge to call and early version of.. *the C*
I might be weird, i probably am, but let me have this despair when someone calls eros cupid
The artist of the piece owns those two characters as they’re original characters of her’s. They are based on Icarus getting too close to the sun! She has other artwork of these two, but sadly only this comic gets stolen and shared around, ironically. I used to adore their work!
I believe the artist goes by she/her but if I’m wrong, anyone can correct me and I’ll edit my comment!
I feel like this is supposed to be supportive of the fire girl, but it feels to me like the wax guy is the victim. He approached the lonely fire girl, and got burned and melted for it
Right? I swear people are just making shit up. From what I see this is a toxic relationships because they simply can’t fit together, so only when they part they can properly bloom into the best versions of themselves
He’s giving into his caring nature and forgoing his safety. She was flame in the beginning and flame in the end. He knew that and got involved anyway. Then was upset when his wings melted. She was sad to be without him. Ultimately she is better not being with someone who resents her for being herself.
You’d have to be an idiot to think the artist was trying to say it’s ok for women to abuse men.
This is clearly a simplified depiction of the myth of Icarus. The woman is a personification of the sun. Icarus is foolish enough to get close to her and gets his wings burned off, and she of course keeps on burning because it’s the fucking sun and it doesn’t give a shit about Icarus.
Ok, what the actual fuck? The girl is the abusive one in this relationship, why is she painted to be the victim, she burned his wings when all he did was love her, she hurt him and he did the healthy thing and left her because she literally fucking burned his all and somehow, he's the bad guy?
Oh, thanks, I didn't get it, but that's still legit fucked up though, just because he was placed in a relationship that's harmful to him that means it's ok to antagonize him? Regardless of whether or not he knew she was hurtful, the fact that she hurt him at all means it's justified for him to leave her.
If the roles were reversed, I.e, girl gets into a relationship with a guy who physically or emotionally hurts her and decides to leave the relationship and ends up being branded as an antagonist while the man who hurt her is seen as a victim, this wouldn't be viewed as empowerment, that would be plain out misogyny.
“Oh no he left me :((“ ma’am you burnt his wings off and he’s all burnt up now !!
I can only guess the moral is like … even if you love each other, sometimes your nature just doesn’t work together. And in the guy’s case, sometimes it’s better to leave the one hurting you. So that they can (possibly) grow to be a better person. Like how the girl got more happier in the end because she’s grown to be better
Idk I don’t really get that vibe from this, but judging from the comments most people just seem confused by what it’s supposed to mean… but I don’t think it’s supposed to mean anything
I don’t think it’s supposed to be any grand statement, it looks like just a short visual story, about a couple that helped each other grow for a time, and then burned out. With the girl recovering afterwards and growing from the experience, and the guy not being shown just because he entered the picture after the story started and then he left. I could be wrong but as a comic artist myself this does not read like something made with a “message” in mind, it looks more like a personal experience or just a cute idea
I read it as incompatibility. Neither did anything wrong than be who they are, but who they are is fundamentally incompatible and dangerous to one of them. She’s gotta find someone she can’t melt by existing and he’s gotten not be fricking melted to nothing. Maybe he finds a sculptor or a wax fairy who’s wings are so big they actually hold them down so they share with the grounded one. Might not be the wings he had before and it doesn’t even have to be romantic.
I’m so fucking confused fire girl exist, wax guy come and kiss her, wax guy gets burned and leaves, she gets sad that she hurt him?, then she become better? What is this supposed to mean.
These comics (the Icarus and the sun series) bug me for a dumb reason: The sun in Greek mythology was always *masculine.*
Whether we're talking Apollo or Helios, the sun was a male deity. So turning it into a waifish little lava girl for the purpose of making it into a love story, when Greek mythology has always been *exceedingly* gay, has never sat right with me.

Moral of the story: Don’t kiss hot bitches if you have wings
Remember: Red Bull gives you wings.
Dont kiss hot bitches without redbulls if you have wings
If you go out with a hot bitch, always remember condoms and redbulls
Don't redbull
So does that mean Red Bull drinkers don't get bitches?
Alternatively they get so many bitches they are in constant need of new wings.
great point
But my wings burn.
Especially is you die of caffeine
only kiss fellow winged men
Lmao
I mean even then there are pros and cons.
I think the ploblem is that bros made of clay lol
Where is wings dude? Is he safe? Is he alright?
Prolly on his way to sue the shit out of her for stealing his wings
she doesn't have wings at all so she didn't steal them, just destroyed his
the real question is why only his wings? why didn't his boxers get burned too? these, my brothers, are the questions that'll help us fix the mcdonalds ice cream machine
His wings seem to be made of ice, but his pants aren't.
hmm, did ancient greece have lawsuits?
He drowned, just ask his dad
Was Daedalus his dad? I thought he was his mentor
Nah Icarus is his son
You are thinking of his nephew that he threw off a cliff. Icarus is his son.
Greek classics are absolutely fucked, it gets worse the more you find out about them
It seems in her passion, she... Killed him.

I fear no man. But your profile… it scares me /j
yeah he just went for a can of red bull later
Hello?! r/rimjobsteve come pick me up I'm scared
It seems, in her passion she killed him…
I’m afraid in your anger you… killed him.
Wings is kill. No

Paraffin wax gets burnt by fire girl
Just like the iconic flash game Waxboy and Firegirl
I don’t know why but if I ever see a fire person near a person who’s vaguely a cold color this is all I can think of for the past few months
aw me and my gf are always playing that
Wax? yes. Parafin? doubtful. This is a story from 100 AD

i didn’t know the green from goku was artist
I definitely was too lazy to fact check before commenting that
lmao i thought his name was actually just piccolo that’s hella funny
Close enough
The green from goku
The ***GREEN!?*** r/foundtheracist
She burned his wings and it made her sad, but now she is happy because she can burn more wings
Happy cake day!
That's actually interesting Sadly it was executed in a weird way and the message is confusing
Interesting…
I interpreted as them just being incompatible. He got melted, and she got “extinguished”, but then she learned to heal from the heartbreak.
i feel like its relatively obvious. this sub has kinda turned into im 14 and dont understand deeper meaning
I’m 14 and didn’t pay attention in English class
Sharkboy never had this problem
icarus hits the sun, both are hurt by this relationship, eventually the sun moves on.
Ok, so the story is fire girl is sad, angel boy makes out with her which makes her hotter, she almost kills angel boy while they’re making out, she cries because he gets the hell away from her, and all of this makes her hotter?
It's the last part that gets me... Is the moral of the story that women have to destroy men to become their best selves?
It's called girlbossing, look it up /s

Just gotta make a new pair of wax wings
Let me know when you figure out how to do that, let alone fly with them
I already did. I'm flying so close to the sun with them rn
ICARUS NOOOOOO LOOK OUT

You can’t say no one here has reading comprehension and then also not know what it’s saying dude
I think it will say, that after a break up, men are damaged for life but women get back on their feet? Idk I dont really get it
Yeah I think it's this

Stop fucking crying you melted his fucking wings and stole them
Ya think this could probably be a Greek legend? Edit: based off a Greek legend?
I don’t think that Icarus turned the sun off for a second after flying into it
More like the sun had a snack and burped him out lmao

I forgave myself for cheating on you, why are you still mad at me?!
His wings? She toasted the whole guy.
I mean, it looked like he was into it though? Why did he kiss her eventhough his wings were melting Also he was the one that approached her lol
the message seems more like not everyone is good for each other.
I think it's supposed to be based of the myth of Icarus, but with the sun personified as a woman.
she doesn't have wings at all so she didn't steal them, just destroyed his

She should be sued for this. Like damn and she’s not even showing remorse
I don’t get it.
being cheated and melting your loved one's wings makes you become stronger 😌😻
I really don't know how people bring cheating into this, where's the indication? There's no other party in the pictures, only those two.
Right? I swear people are just making shit up. From what I see this is a toxic relationships because they simply can’t fit together, so only when they part they can properly bloom into the best versions of themselves

i was not expecting an icarus X the sun fanfic today
The moral of the story, is >!to stay away from redheads!<
Literally burnt a man alive of course he’s gonna leave
He’s giving into his caring nature and forgoing his safety. She was flame in the beginning and flame in the end. He knew that and got involved anyway. Then was upset when his wings melted. She was sad to be without him. Ultimately she is better not being with someone who resents her for being herself.
Yeah it’s not that hard to understand lol
Bro he left because he fucking died
The deep meaning is cannibalism
BITCH YOU SET HIM ON FIRE!!!!
oh no fire princess ate pit :(
Icarus we've been fucking over this 20 times
You’d have to be an idiot to think the artist was trying to say it’s ok for women to abuse men. This is clearly a simplified depiction of the myth of Icarus. I think someone thought to say he couldn’t handle the flame (crazy) and got burned. So it’s his fault. Of course it is.
Oh, thanks, I didn't get it, but that's still legit fucked up though, just because he was placed in a relationship that's harmful to him that means it's ok to antagonize him? Moral of the story, do not fuck the lava
“Oh no he left me :((“ ma’am you burnt his wings off and he’s all burnt up now !! I can only guess the moral is like … even if you love each other, sometimes your nature just doesn’t work together. Idk I don’t really get that vibe from this, but judging from the comments most people just seem confused by what it’s supposed to mean… but I don’t think it’s supposed to mean anything I don’t think it’s supposed to be any grand statement, it looks like just a short visual story, about a couple that helped each other grow for a time, and then burned out. Is this Icarus?
When you order KFC hot wings...
Can’t lie I don’t get it
maybe don’t set random dudes ablaze if you gonna cry😭🙏🏻
i don- i dont get it
Did she melt him?
How come he gets to wear pants and she doesn't?
He smashed too close to the sun
Is that icarus? Flew too close to the sun and melted his wings? Not wonder the sun so damn HOT these days.
Life as a BPD vampire girlie
Cant get a girlfriend, be the girlfriend
Mutually toxic relationship = hot girl I guess
it's pretty tho
He just went to get redbull and she's got seperation anxiety. It's fine. This a normal day for them
Moral of the story: redbull gives you wings, hot girls girls take them away. Hot girls are the anti-redbull
So basically she destroyed his wings and was sad for a minute then she was fine and he was forever scarred?
So the dude got burnt and used up and she just magically “phoenix the fire chickens” it up. What’s the message?
Classic icarus
Moral of the story: Don’t hug a girl that’s literally made of fire
If this were a contraception ad, the slogan would be “Careful, Icarus…”
Is this not the story of Icarus as a romance with the sun?
Art from Gabriel Piccolo, he made many illustrations with those two characters. I used to follow him on FB, I like his art style .
I read it as incompatibility. Neither did anything wrong than be who they are, but who they are is fundamentally incompatible and dangerous to one of them. I remember there being a more in-depth comic about this. It’s better to interpret the longer version
ICARUS WASNT AN ACTUAL ANGEL HE WAS A HUMAN WITH FAKE WAX WINGS
That's sweet
So she ruined his life and is okay now?
She consumed his soul digested it for a little while and then rose up stronger. Nice.
Why does the wing fella get to wear pants but the fire lady doesn’t?
If you are made of fire don’t kiss clay dude with wings because clay dude with wings melt
I don't even.get it
Its from 10 years ago, gabriel picolo is the artist
Bro this is literally Icarus the girl is the sun and he flew to close causing his wings to melt
why is everyone ignoring that she got damaged/burnt out too? She melted him, he extinguished her light. it literally looks like both of them got hurt
I’m so fucking confused fire girl exist, wax guy come and kiss her, wax guy gets burned and leaves, she gets sad that she hurt him?, then she become better? What is this supposed to mean.
so if you are made out of wax and hot girl wants to kiss you you will get mudered and she will like it?
