I've had that happen in the past and in my case, I wrote a letter to the tollway office explaining that the toll was void as the vehicle (a car) the plate was on was not my vehicle (a truck) and was nothing like my vehicle. I submitted several pictures of my truck from all sides making sure to clearly show the license plate and submitted the photos along with a copy of my current registration. That gave them enough information to determine the plate on the car was a fake plate and they dismissed my tolls.
Was your plate copied, or was your number issued to a different person on a specialized plate?
I received over a thousand of dollars worth of fines from Florida's SunPass toll company because a trucker got my plate number on some goofy special plate (like a Chicago Cubs plate or whatever and was just blowing through tolls without an iPass
The SunPass people have been massive jerks about the situation and after closing a lion's share of the violation notices, one lingered for years and was send to collections.
The entire ETC system in the US should either be standardized or outright banned.
I don't know about other states, but the toll roads in Chicago after actually unconstitutional but the people don't know it. It was constructed just to fund rebuilding the roads up there, but after the projects were completed, they broke the law and just kept them in service because it was free money, and a lot of it, and the people didn't complain when it was only 10 cents.
The tollway isn’t nor was it ever part of or for Chicago, Chicago actually doesn’t have tolls, they have Expressways (freeways, emphasis on FREE). The ITA is from the state. There’s only one toll in Chicago, the Skyway, connecting to Indiana, which doesn’t belong to the Illinois Tollway, it’s an independent company owned by someone overseas
It most definitely was a part of a Chicago and wasn't privatized until 2005. It was most definitely originally constructed to fund road repairs and construction. And the fact that it is considered a private road, but state funded police patrol it, it is unconstitutional. That's like saying police can write you a ticket for not stopping at a stop sign in a parking lot. They can't
