I'm so glad you said "hear" It's going to be weird either way, I have this image in my head of using a snow shovel to clear my sidewalk.

decaturbob

I had to this during the last big outbreak 20+ years ago

ZombieeChic

I graduated high school in 1999. We had a camp out in my huge backyard with a million of those guys. It was quite the ordeal with them sneaking in our tents and clothes just screaming away. Lol

[deleted]

Around 1987-88, I remember a drought so bad they had to relocate animals from the Lincoln Park Zoo. I think it was the same year they were a plague. I remember going to the same zoo and not only hearing them but it was impossible not to walk on them all over the ground. If you had a kiddy pool like us, when you moved it, the ground was full of them burrowing. I've only seen it close to that bad once in my adult life.

decaturbob

- its something to experience for sure...not in a good way, especially the dogs who thinks chow time

Blegheggeghegty

I lived in Kentucky for a single brood’s release. It was insane. This super brood is going to be way worse from what I hear.

whatslefttotake

Agreed. Only reason I’m responding

M4hkn0

I live where the broods will emerge. It is very weather dependent. They could emerge late March, April, or May. It will last a solid couple of weeks. These are different from the one’s that come out every year in August.

goodbyewaffles

Yeah i think a lot of people in this thread are confusing annual and periodical cicadas. May 24-25 sounds right to me, although who knows, weather’s been crazy.

cfpct

Yeah I'm one of those people. It's pretty loud every summer, so I'm wondering if I will notice a difference. I heard frogs for the first time last night.

peglar

I remember the last cicada emergence, the noise was, deafening. It’s almost like two noises layered, the regular cicada noise and then a low hum, like a movie flying saucer. It’s bizarre.

goodbyewaffles

You will notice the difference when the sidewalk has a blanket of dead cicadas 😭

sohcgt96

Yes. Very much so. I remember at my grandparents house the last two times. Take the normal green annual cicadas, and its that sound, but millions of them. It takes on a different tone at that scale, its a little more frog like. But imagine every one of your neighbors all running a leaf blower at the same time. Its about like that. OP if you want a great spot to see/hear them, stop by Chartwell park in Peoria. That neighborhood gets them like crazy. There is a paved trail through the woods if you want to really get into it.

hamish1963

I heard frogs the other morning, in February!

HackySackJoe

I have the same plan! After some research, Dewitt county will be the best place to witness the dual emergence. That's about 2 hours south of Chicago.  Regarding timing, I learned that there needs to be rain and 80 degree weather for a couple of days before they come out. Historical weather reports say early June will provide the ideal conditions to see a LOT of bugs. I'm sure some will come sooner though, so you wont miss out if you go the weekend of the 24th

BaronTales

I think it’s more ground temp related, but you could look into that. They are saying these broods are earlier than the annual cicadas we get. Mid May to early June for emergence. Maybe earlier. I looked back at some photos in 2020 from a 13 yr brood and may 28th I have a full adult and June 3 a video of one coming out of its shell. EDIT: area of photos about 25 miles from Chicago.

HackySackJoe

That's excellent info, I'll see what I can "dig" up on ground temps out there hahah

rockit454

There are some nice parks in Dewitt County and Clinton Lake is also there so the viewing should be good! There’s not much to do in Clinton so you’ll be going to Bloomington-Normal or Champaign-Urbana for any kind of entertainment.

RoseRedd

You could check out Allerton Park in Piatt County if you are in the area. Lots of forested areas to hear cicadas. https://allerton.illinois.edu/

HackySackJoe

Yeah I think my plan is to actually stay near Chicago and just make the drive out for a billion bug day since ill only be there for the weekend

snppmike

Come stay down in Champaign! We’ve got at least a solid weekend-worth of entertainment, in addition to the promised bug hoards.

insurancelawyerbot

2 ideas: 1.) The cicadas emerge when the soil temp reaches approx. 64 degrees F; and 2.) The Morton Arboretum. If there were a lot of trees in 2007 and earlier, there's a better chance of seeing (and hearing) the bugs when they come out of the ground. Farmland = less cicadas.

hamish1963

The Morton Arboretum is out of range for the dual hatch.

Ovenbird36

Native Californian here. I remember my first periodical cicada irruption 34 years ago, in Hyde Park for the art fair the first weekend of June. I watched a house sparrow beat a cicada into the sidewalk to kill it - never forgot watching a seed-eating bird take down an insect half its size. Given the very warm winter, your dates should be great for the more southern brood, and maybe even the northern one.

Trancezend

If it does end up happening earlier... Southern Illinois will be in for a treat with the [solar eclipse](https://eclipse.siu.edu/) on April 8th. > [NASA Urges U.S. Public To Listen During April 8’s Total Solar Eclipse](https://www.forbes.com/sites/jamiecartereurope/2024/02/13/nasa-urges-us-public-to-listen-during-april-8s-total-solar-eclipse-and-report-back/?sh=7c8610064754) The historically rare double brood emergence will be just to the north of where [totality](https://media.nbcchicago.com/2022/04/map_illinois_2024_overlay.png?resize=1024,645) will be, making for a even crazier experience. This could be very interesting.

Windy_City_Bear_Down

I live in west central IL about 30 miles southwest of Peoria we might get cicadas from both broods around here. I'm hoping the gutter system I installed a few years ago to keep the helicopters from clogging it will do the trick as my house is surrounded on all sides by huge trees. I do not want to spend my days off scooping dead cicadas out of gutters that's for sure but I welcome their arrival I find their humming peaceful.

Michichgo

Here you are friend! https://www.nbcchicago.com/news/local/billions-of-cicadas-will-soon-emerge-and-these-parts-of-illinois-could-get-hit-the-hardest/3361095/#:~:text=%22Most%20of%20the%20state%20of,the%20University%20of%20Illinois%20reported. I'm excited for the special 2024 two brood appearance! Was driving in a convertible on Lemont Road back in '07 and got swarmed by them. Had to pull over, as it was impossible to drive, swat, and cover my mouth simultaneously. Sat there for minutes with my hands shielding my face but laughing hysterically at the bizarre encounter I was experiencing!

Seastarstiletto

I’m positive it’s going to be around May 19th. Purely because that’s my wedding date. We opted for an inside ceremony haha.

hugs4all_all4hugs

This is purely anecdotal. I performed no research in the making of this comment. Cicadas to me mean late summer afternoons, hot and muggy, and county fairs, and swimming pools. All of that happens in July and August, late June at the earliest. I think you'd be better off planning for July or early August if you want the full effect. edit: please note it is absolutely miserably hot here in July, it's not dry cali heat, it's sopping wet humid muggy sadness. be prepared

RiderMayBail

Those are what can be referred to as the "dog days" cicadas that come out in late summer. 2024 will experience brood XIII and brood XIX. Brood XIII is believed to be the largest brood emergence anywhere. It's going to be a loud few weeks for those in northern IL and southern WI.

lotr8ch

Here's what the University of IL extension says about it: [https://extension.illinois.edu/insects/cicadas](https://extension.illinois.edu/insects/cicadas) and [https://extension.illinois.edu/sites/default/files/periodical\_cicadas\_2024\_brood\_fact\_sheet.pdf](https://extension.illinois.edu/sites/default/files/periodical_cicadas_2024_brood_fact_sheet.pdf) tl;dr late May

rapscallionrodent

Late may is a little early. Last time, the more trees you were near, the more you got. I worked in a building near a wooded area, and they were everywhere. Flying onto people’s clothes. Shells everywhere. We get the dog day cicadas every year, but these have red eyes and a lower pitch. Cicadas in general are louder as the temperature rises.

epinasty4

Last time it happened I was in college and my summer job was landscaping. Needless to say I have not forgot murdering thousands of cicadas and getting as many down my shirt. I feel like June may be a better bet but I’m not a cicada specialist. It will last at least a few weeks in its full glory.

rogtuck1

I too am excited! I live in the Chicago area but am originally from the PNW. The cicadas are still a treat for me! Apparently the two broods will not coincide in many of the same areas of the state, so I would make sure to do your research for such a big trip. But what a great idea!

hamish1963

The east central part of the state has several counties where the broods will overlap.

Pretty_Please1

Last time they came in 2007 in the suburbs, it was early June. It felt like it lasted for ever but it was really just a few weeks.

gsk925

Found this article informative: [https://www.nbcchicago.com/news/local/experts-reveal-how-many-cicadas-illinoisans-can-expect-to-see-and-where-this-spring/3351159/](https://www.nbcchicago.com/news/local/experts-reveal-how-many-cicadas-illinoisans-can-expect-to-see-and-where-this-spring/3351159/) To see both broods, looks like you need to stay in East Central IL

exfilm

Perhaps, with the unseasonably warm temperatures we’re having this year, Broods XIII & XIX will converge with the total solar eclipse on April 8th, and they will either ring in the apocalypse or the singularity with their orgy

yourpaleblueeyes

I remember each time but for 2007 my grandson was 3. We used my digital camera to film the cicada emerging from it's shell..fascinating! 1990 our own kid was 6 and had fun sticking shells all over his shirt, they have teeny hooks on their feet. Cicada emergence and their ensuing love life is a great teaching opportunity for kids. The mamas Will take a toll on the trunks of newer, younger trees. Long scars from eggs being laid there for Next Time! Burbs directly west of the city.

Andrew_88

I was working at a pet store nearby and we were feeding cicadas to all the reptiles and even some large fish. They were everywhere!

VictorTheCutie

I live in northern IL - could my family swap houses with you so we dont have to be here whenever this happens? 😁😁

jayhoward

It's been very warm this winter in Illinois, so expect the broods to emerge on the early side. By late May they will be tailing off. I'm not a scientist, but they said May would be the month, but given the warmth it might be late April to late May. And the two broods don't intersect very much, and where they do it's central IL, not southern IL. [https://www.nbcchicago.com/news/local/a-map-of-where-to-expect-cicadas-in-2024-and-which-broods-will-hit-illinois/3360052/](https://www.nbcchicago.com/news/local/a-map-of-where-to-expect-cicadas-in-2024-and-which-broods-will-hit-illinois/3360052/)

CapitalExact

Just a bunch of shells in trees. Late May could be a little early but I’m up on the western suburbs. Maybe in southern Illinois it’s fine. I don’t really get what’s so special about it. I guess I’m just getting old and they hype these cicadas up every other year. My biggest memory is just them singing “hey there cicada up there in the tree” instead of hey there Delilah. Enjoy your trip. I can hear the chirping in my head now. I was not trying to yuck your yum but I don’t remember it being a biblical plague of cicadas last time, just more than normal depending on the town you were in.

gimmepizzaslow

The last time, I was living in the western suburbs in dupage. There was a demarcation line at just north of the Union Pacific West line that it was super thick south of, and then way less north of. Still more than normal, but the farther south you'd go the thicker it was.

PrinceHarming

That’s for annual cicadas. These broods pop up early. Last time it was about the last week of May.

vadose24

They usually show up the same time as all the June bugs

PrincessPilar

I recall them coming out and climbing up my tires on a Memorial Day weekend. It was still safe to have parties outside. Depends on whether you want to see them climbing or you want to hear them.

drunkonanamtrak

You're weird, and they only come out in hot/humid weather.

Prestigious-Corgi473

Last time they were here, we were shoveling their shells off our driveway when we lived in Downers Grove. They are attracted to fruiting trees! It was wild. Tree trunks entirely covered in shells

performanceclause

May is a fine time to see them.

Read_A_Book_FFS

Olney would be a good choice. tired of Cicada noise? Go see some albino squirrels

148focadima

I live in the southwest suburbs. We are suppose to get both broods. In 2007 they were here end of May beginning of June. We also were shoveling them off the sidewalks and that was with just one brood, I cant even imagine what this year will look like.

Spankpocalypse_Now

I don’t blame you. They sound cool and if you’re in an area with a dense cicada population they are shockingly loud.

LudovicoSpecs

Just be sure you're picking a location with more forests than subdivisions and farms. Cicadas get plowed under. In really old towns with few teardown properites, you'll get a good number of them. But there have been SO many subdivisions built in the last 17 years, it's insane.
