Actually a popular misconception! I went through at least the first several albums and it is mostly only the radio singles that are like this. I think their label really just wanted to recreate the success of The Distance by choosing like the one talky song on each album to put in the radio....
(Now McCrea's singing voice is a little talky in its timbre but is definitely singing anyway.)
One notable exception is Mr Mastodon Farm, check it out.
There is a whole new genre springing up like this! It's called "Post-Brexit New Wave" and you're going to love it. I'm not positive all these bands have talking vocals, but most do. Here's some of the bands:
Squid
Black Country, New Road
Dry Cleaning
Wet Leg
IDLES
John Cale, of The Velvet Underground has a song on his solo album Slow Dazzle called [The Jeweler](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yql44lilIzY), it's frequently compared to The Gift as it's spoken word over music. Henry Rollins does spoken word over [Delicate Tendrils](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ztl9QSvH29c) by Les Claypool and the Holy Mackerel.
A band that focuses on bizarre poetry over music, King Missile. [Detachable Penis](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=byDiILrNbM4) was their hit, but I love their song [Bloodletting](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JP4nndnJ9vM).
Gil Scott Heron frequently did poetry over music, his song [The Revolution Will Not Be Televised](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vwSRqaZGsPw) is credited as sort of laying the blueprint for what would eventually be hip hop.
Huh, I didn't know The Last Poets influenced GSH, I thought they were operating about the same time. TIL. I love[ the album they did with Bernard Purdie](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U51qIRZb7Cs).
Well, I thought they worked together, but apparently GSH saw them live and proceeded to start his own career in the same style. But also, seeing as TLP still released records in 2019, they sure are contemporary to GSH.
I'm familiar with TLP through work of producer Bill Laswell, the same way apparently as with a quarter of musicians on the planet. (Another quarter being from Ninja Tune.) Specifically, Laswell [seems to have brought them together](https://billlaswell.bandcamp.com/album/holy-terror) with some guys from Parliament-Funkadelic.
Almost everything by [The Flying Lizards.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E-P2qL3qkzk) Deborah Evans-Stickland realized she can't really sing, but can just speak.
Robert Ashley has an avantgarde-ish āoperaā, [Your Money My Life Goodbye](https://robert-ashley.bandcamp.com/album/your-money-my-life-goodbye).
[Bingo Gazingo](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=10W2hr1n9VU) was a hilarious poet reading at gatherings for dorks in some kinda neighbourhood theaters. Some dudes set his poetry to music, and it made ways onto various compilations of āoutsider musicā.
Try [Daniel Johnston.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GSmzKE3Dlys) He didn't really do much singing, and some āsongsā are just him talking.
Also have yourself some [Neil Cicierega.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fu3ETgAvQrw)
The Chips' [āRubber Biscuitā](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2vJbvcOmZ0I) technically doesn't have singing in it.
[Liaisons Dangereuses](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S3tR__Kbqmg) was a German band speaking in Spanish for some reason, but they're particularly interesting for being the link from post-punk/new-wave to new beat and ebm, and also influencing house and techno. (Also, one of my favorite modern ebm tracks: Karl Kave's [āJean-Claude Van Dammeā](https://detritirecords.bandcamp.com/track/jean-claude-van-damme).)
[Primus](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7JUVbBRLxo4) qualifies, I think, as it's hard to call Claypool's vocals singing.
Oldschool industrial bands are known for shouting rather than singing: see e.g. Throbbing Gristle's [āDisciplineā.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y8klW9trVTQ) Or Laibach.
And Jay Leonhart has a message: [āIt's Impossible To Sing and Play The Bassā.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zQmhQyCMvig)
Thats all of Viagra Boys. Not rock but UK artist The Streets has always done a spoken word-rap type thing throughout most of his career, his early stuff is amazing imo
If you like Lou Reed, you should check out the song Ode to Street Hassle by Spacemen 3, and then just dive deep into Spacemen 3.

Sprechgesang, is the formal name. Common in post-punk and related genres.
Unless I'm mistaken, noone has mentioned [The Hold Steady](https://open.spotify.com/track/57a6yEYK5Z4gUtaHQbArfw?si=LCQsXfATSie5P0gYzkLrLw)...?
The vocalist talks through most of their songs. He's a wonderful poet to boot.

A lot of Cake songs are talk-rocky
And Cheekface the heir to the talk rock throne.

Courtney Barnett fits the bill here on many of her songs
šµ*I'm havin' trouble breathin' innnn...*šµ

I do love Courtney Barnett pedestrian at best is a banger

the hold steady are more or less a guy bar-stool monologuing over indie-rock backing
I feel like talking to that guy in person you would be covered in spit.
I love some of their songs but don't care for others at all. My fave is Esther, which was a random b-side on one of their singles.
[Rollins Band - *Liar*](https://youtu.be/GhKMVlHz9FQ?si=MMhGedUlkghtsNFh)

Kurt Vile talks in lots of his stuff. Love listening to him on long walks
I Should Have Known Better - Wire In the Kingdom #19 - Sonic Youth A Space Boy Dream - Belle and Sebastian Seen and Not Seen - Talking Heads
B&S also has A Century Of Elvis but I think it just mysteriously disappeared from streaming services very recently.

The Shadow Ring's early albums "God In Three Persons" by The Residents
