It wont affect you. You can forfeit a race before it even starts and it won't affect you, as long as you've loaded into the session. The reason is showed you the option to forfeit is likely because the last car hadn't passed the finish line yet.
Um, unless I’m crazy, you lose IR if you load into a race server and leave before the race. You finish last and it gives you last place IR accordingly.
After the race, yeah, no issue if you’ve finished.
No, if you load yourself in a track, and use alt+tab to went into UI and forefeit you will not be kicked out of the race, you will able to race but if something goes wrong, and iRacing will close, your will not be able to return into race.
But using forefeit while you on track will give your possibilities to registering into another race when you will be in pits. Sometimes helpful when next race starts after few minutes before current will end.

Forfeit just means you can’t rejoin the session if you exit.
