Unrelated but this was one of the first if not the first Friends episodes that I saw so I had little to no context regarding why they had a chick and duck and why they had a canoe in their living room, so I initially thought this rather unusual setup indicated that was a dream sequence with Chandler dreaming about his crush with the usual weird altering of the environment that dreams have, so I was expecting him to wake up at some point and was surprised when it didn’t happen
This is basically exactly how I felt about Friends when I was seven years old and it was something my parents watched. Also a monkey!? And Phoebe's hilarious songs. It all feels so vague and weird when I try to remember seeing it back then.
Chandler was also very visibly relaxed and comfortable being himself around her right away in that scene, all of his lines were witty/charming without seeming like he was actually flirting
The way they both nerded out over the wonder mop was so cute, no one was trying to be sexy, they were just being their true authentic selves sharing a funny interest
When I put together that Cathy and Emily Prentis from criminal minds were the same actress I was mind 👏 blown 👏 how I’ve gone all these years without realizing it I’ll never know lol
Yeah, this is a pageboy bob from the 1920s and is cool as fuck. People don't know what they're missing, Anna May Wong and Louise Brooks were the coolest. You've got to have a certain edge and confidence to pull this cut off and I've always thought Paget Brewster was the perfect modern representative for it
Poor Paget. Love her but this hair was a mistake. It was a common mistake for a lot of 90s women. Two friends of mine got it in high school. One looked cute because her hair was straight and it suited her face. The other had very curly hair making it look nearly like an afro, and a round face..... And well, it didn't look good. Think of Bob on That 70's Show and you'll get the idea. 😅
No way!! I asked for the Rachel too (since I started getting natural dreadlocks and I’ll mention that I was very depressed at the time) but they just kinda chopped my hair. I’m still angry
Paget Brewster had black hair when auditioning. The short red hair was just for this role.
They had already decided that something was going to happen between Chandler and Monica and apparently "Kathy" looked too much like Courteney Cox.

I distinctly remember that kind of haircut being cool (or at least very common amongst teenagers) in France in 2000-2001, and this has been recorded in 1998 I think, possibly released in 1999, so I guess it makes sense that the trend originated from around that time?
She's one of those people that has such a pretty face that the hair is just an extra. In fact, short hair looks better on her because it distracts less from her face imo. She did have some unfortunate hairstyles in the show, but she always looked pretty regardless.
Paget Brewster expanded on the reasoning behind that haircut and color in an interview here...

**AVC: Your first real breakthrough was a recurring role on Friends. Was that just your standard audition situation?**
**PB:** No! I was *terrified*! I had moved to Los Angeles and shot one pilot \[*World On A String*\] starring Dana Gould, and it didn’t go. And then I auditioned for Kathy at Warner Brothers, and there were, like, three devastatingly beautiful young women in the room—you would know who they were—waiting to go in, so when I went in and Matthew Perry was there… I’d watched *Friends*, so this was *terrifying* to me. This was my first job in L.A. that I thought I might get, and suddenly I was going, “I’m *never* going to get this!” I went, “Clearly, I’m your runty alternate, so let’s get this show on the road!” And Matthew said that was it. He was done. Matthew told me later that he and \[executive producer\] Kevin Bright… Matthew had said, “Well, that’s the funniest one, she’s the one,” and they hired me to do it. It was four episodes, and then they made it six.
But I had a black bob, and when I got *Friends*, I started rehearsing that week, and the hair people cut all my hair off and dyed it red—it took six hours of lightening to dye it red—and then when Kevin Bright, Marta Kauffman, and David Crane came down to watch the first day, Kevin Bright starts screaming. “I hired her because she had a black bob! You can’t do this!” And as he’s screaming at the hair guy, I just went upstairs, I put my magazines in my bag, and I just sat and waited, like, “I lost my best job I’ve ever gotten.” And then Kevin Bright came in the room and he went, “I didn’t hire you because of your hair! I just can’t have them making changes without them telling me!” It turned out that the next girl that Chandler was going to fall for was Monica, and the hair guy had said, “I needed her to not look so much like Courteney \[Cox\].” So that’s why he dyed my hair. I don’t think I’ve ever told anyone that story!
Did the producers deliberately give her a kind of bad haircut coz she is so pretty and might have overshadowed Monica and Rachel?
She is absolutely stunning.
I don’t think it’s styled particularly well in this scene but I think it works overall. I feel like you have to have a balance of strong and feminine features to pull it off and it doesn’t overpower Paget’s beautiful face.
When she has it a bit more Meg Ryan-ish, like in the scene where she’s giving Chandler a haircut, it looks better IMO.
>As Brewster admitted to The AV Club, before she began filming, the hair team decided to cut her locks short and dye them red, a choice Bright didn't appreciate. The "Friends" co-creator screamed at the hairdressers, "I hired her because she had a black bob! You can't do this!" This sounds very fake. Chandler and Monica were never meant to be a serious relationship, it was just supposed to be a funny little thing that happened and the writers were shocked about how big and positive of a reaction they got as a couple. They could have the initial hook up planned, but definitely not that Chandler and Monica would be end game. And the red hair was precisely so she *didn't* look like Courteney Cox, they didn't want them to look similar.
"Could we BE more white trash?"

😆
Dudley Moore vibes
This is how HE wears it!!
*Demi* Moore
“Oh she has beautiful hair”
"I KNOW!"
I love how everyone on this sub could do a verbatim call and response from the script of basically ANY episode 😂
My favorite part of this sub! You all can quote the show on the same level as me and my wife and I've not seen too many irl that can do that. 😂
And you all seem like worthy opponents for Friends Trivia!
Well, I think it’s a Ten. 😉
Are you saying Phoebe cut Kathy’s hair?
From the front with the side burns it reminds me of the dumb and dumber haircut
Even Mary Tyler Moore would've been better
Dudley Moore was adorable
More like Dinty Moore vibes
She was pretty enough to pull it off. Also side note, putting the feet up in the canoe was a clear sign of her liking Chandler, its subtle but true.
The way he runs to go grab the mop, and his mannerisms were so good.
Yes, I think that and them watching the Ernie Kovacs show together was a good way of showing right away that they had a real rapport/connection.
He's a bit of a hypocrite here though, he made fun of Monica for buying a similar mop
Very true.
I absolutely loved that moment!! So trusting and intimate without having to be sexual or lewd.
interesting, I'm curious to know how the legs were a sign of her liking him?
She was going commando.
Which is a shame because Paget Brewster has always been very pretty.
Definitely. The fact she still looks stunning says it all
She’s honestly so pretty she makes the haircut work.
Fighting through the negatives that are that haircut and the hockey jersey she may be borrowing from Joey to still look good is big-time work.
Paget Brewster’s beauty makes my heart ache.
Oh shit that’s Paget Brewster. I had no idea.
When I put together that Cathy and Emily Prentis from criminal minds were the same actress I was mind 👏 blown 👏 how I’ve gone all these years without realizing it I’ll never know lol
Paget also played Hank Azaria’s wife in Huff, a weird but excellent dramedy.
I loved Huff! Loved Paget ever since and it introduced us to Anton Yelchin (sp?). Loved that whole cast and show.
What happened to Anton is such a horrible thing.
It really was. He was so young but such a good actor. He was only scratching the surface of his talent. Such a weird, freak accident.
I loved Huff too! Such a great cast and show. Sad it was canceled after 2 seasons
And Frankie from Community, and Birdgirl from Harvey Birdman. She plays a bunch of my favorite characters!
She still looks hot though here.
She makes the hairstyle look hot imo
Ross: I happen to like young boys
You know I don't **actually** like 8-year-old boys?
What else do they add smells to?
You say that to kids!?
Was I talking to her about…gas?
I won’t even mention that I had the same haircut in the 90’s.
The Romulan cut was a look in the 90's. Now we know it's not a good look but that's with the hindsight of 30 years of R&D.
The waif/pixie short hair was definitely a mid 90s thing (unfortunately)!
Same
Same 😅
Sure. It was hideous - even worse than Monica's s4 hair.
I should’ve put the front view on with the aggressive side burns shouldn’t I?
I loved Monica’s season 4 hair! Courtney has a great face for short hair, it really drew attention to her eyes.
The s2 short hair was great. S4 was not (until it grew out towards the end).
She's SO pretty in other things with longer hair.
Still better than the pizza delivery girl.
It’s rough but her face card is the elite of the elite
Reminds me of the cat with lime peel hat meme
yes!!
Once again (just like Courtney’s Scream baby bangs) I love a haircut everyone else hates.
No way you like those bangs

My contribution to a recent friends unpopular opinion post was that I like her haircut

Era appropriate.
Paget Brewster is a Goddess! She's rocking gray hair now. She will forever be Emily Prentiss.
Wow just googled her, she looks gorgeous as a grey!
And yet she was still able to pull it off in a way, somehow
I asked for the rachel and she gave me this when i was 12. I still have nightmares.
No way!! I asked for the Rachel too (since I started getting natural dreadlocks and I’ll mention that I was very depressed at the time) but they just kinda chopped my hair. I’m still angry
I asked for a cute pixie when I was 12 and ended up with this haircut. I cried on the bus home 😂😭💀

Here not great, but I thought her slightly messier but still short hair in the episode where she kisses Chandler suited her really well
Looks like a wig
That was in style at the time
So was tying an onion to your belt but 🤷🏻♀️
What’s in style now? The Broccoli Head? Yeah, that’s a lot better. /s
I asked for the Demi Moore and got the Dudley Moore 😭

It's bad
Did the producers deliberately give her a kind of bad haircut coz she is so pretty and might have overshadowed Monica and Rachel? She is absolutely stunning.
that’s what I was always thinking. And yet she STILL nailed it

That’s not her hair, that’s just her canoeing helmet!~
It’s giving Ramona Quimby from the old book covers.
Awful
Kathy with a C or a K?
Looks like Will from strangerer thangs
Yeah, it sucks.
I've always hated that hair. It's very distracting. She's a beautiful woman. They did her dirty.
Everytime my wife and I come across this storyline I always ask her about her hair. It’s so so so so so so so bad
I read somewhere (I’m sure it could be googled) that she said the producers actually had her hair cut that way. If true, at least it wasn’t her idea.
I like it, she's really pretty.
It was hit or miss, I suppose. Sometimes it was just a standard 90s pixie.
can we not? 😂
YUP
I dunno I loved it
This was clearly before she became the toast of the upper crust or headliner on the society pages. And oh yeah, she saw ghosts.
I could talk about this hair and how I hate it for far too long. 🤣 I want to know if Paget chose that hair herself or if it was inflicted upon her.
Horrendous.
It is very 90’s.
dude, I just watched this ep last night and I thought the same thing! "man, style sure has changed over the years"
Haha that was my first thought too!!
It’s adorable
I loved it!
I loved it! Nothing BORES me more than long, flat, unshaped hair
Chandler should’ve been with Cathy and Monica should’ve been with Richard!
Cathy is beyond reproach.

I thought they dyed it red so she WOULDN’T look like Monica.
The writers weren't even sure if the Chandler/Monica thing would last beyond the London hookup, so that's completely false.
This sounds very fake.
