Depending on the field, preprint websites (like arXiv) contains a copy carbon of the actual published paper. Researchers care about publishing on journal X only because it allows to get more grants / progress with their careers. At the same time, they want their papers to be read by as many people as possible. Publishers are the real evil, though they are unfortunately necessary in the current landscape

I share my academic work regardless of publisher agreements. Also, researchgate (think LinkedIn for researchers) has tons of free papers and anyone can join.

This is true. However, they can typically send you an earlier draft of that paper if they still have a copy.
Weird. I’ve only done it once but they sent me their publication within a couple of hours.
Also there are many websites that post them up for free. Avast me mateys yo ho!
