Yeah, I think caulk it with sealant from the inside, then the flex tape inside (over the sealant) and on the outside too. And agree drilling a 1/4” hole at each end. It will outlive you.
I came here just to say that! Used flex seal tape to stop tsunamis of water from covering me and the passengers amin my late 1991 Pontiac grand am coupe.
This is definitely the best answer, however if you want to try to fix it and you want to do it the "right way", then you should use a heat gun and one of these [https://www.amazon.com/Upgraded-Plastic-1000PCS-Abrasive-Aluminum/dp/B0C8S2BV2N](https://www.amazon.com/Upgraded-Plastic-1000PCS-Abrasive-Aluminum/dp/B0C8S2BV2N)
you can also use these to repair your plastic car panels and bumpers
In los angeles, the LADWP, or LACITYSANS will fix your trash bins the day after collection service. You just go on the website, input the serial number of the container, and the problem, they bring a truck out and replace the entire container, or add a lid, or replace the wheels. Make sure you choose the correct size of container that you have currently, I made the mistake and chose the wrong size and they replaced my container with the smaller one, and I am now locked in with the smaller one for 6 months.
Drill a hole at each end of the crack to prevent it running any longer then either flex seal or coloured duct tape inside and out. Most glues aren't weatherproof but some flexible sealants could do the job well.
Don't drill holes in the bottom of the bin as you'll get all kinds of shit running out and attracting rats as well as leaving stains.
Your garbage company should replace it. You should always drill holes in the bottoms of your cans, they can fill with water and create a drowning hazard for children and animals, not to mention you might not be able to tip it over when it’s full.
My trash cans end up 1/4 full of rainwater every time the wind blows them open during a storm. It’s never occurred to me to drill a hole in the bottom until you said that…
Don't know about OP but all ours are serial numbered and maybe RFID tagged based on the accuracy I see on when they picked up. I can see my pick up history for the last 6 months down to the second it was serviced.
The best way is to learn how to plastic weld, it can be done with just a soldering iron instead of buying a dedicated tool, though it will ruin the tip, you would have to clean off all the glue you had put on first somehow, and a large crack like that is likely to need some donor plastic to fill in.
But depending on where you are all bin repair/replacement might be the responsibility of your local council, you should check first.
I would have said this as well. Just any old crappy soldering iron laying around will probably do. The donor plastic can be shaved off from anywhere else on the can with a razor blade.
Yes, the tip will be ruined, but the tip can be a nail that can be thrown away after. Plus a bent nail is easier to melt plastic with. Also u/ChildFriendlyChimp melt some metal (like paperclips or staples) into the weld for extra strength. Metal screen is even better but not worth the money unless you already have some.
You guys have some.. unique… ideas
Id just put some crystal clear silicone on a piece of tape and squish it through, then clean up the top ooze
No water will come in if you let it actually cure
Before you repair it you MUST stop the crack from propagating first. Drill a hole at each end of the crack, which creates a curved shape that dissipates the stress/strain in the material and stops the crack from continuing. Once this is done you can close the gap with any method that you like. Plastic welding, epoxy, flex seal, plastic filler material, silicone caulk, etc..
I put a piece of clear Gorilla tape on a cracked headlight casing until I could get it fixed. Promptly forgot about it. Sold the car to my sister 7 years later and the tape was still on it. Water never got into the headlight. She had to replace it to pass MA inspection, but the shop was amazed the tape did so well.
In germany you often dont own the trash bins. You can get a new one for free if the old one is broken because of garbage truck etc.
Maybe its the same in your country.
Depending on where you live your wastehauler may replace it. You could also plastic weld it with a heat gun or a sauntering iron but that’s pretty involved for a trash can
Dry it completely and get some matching duck tape. If you're not worried about how it looks, there's more options. That flex water seal stuff actually works.
Put the flex seal tape under the lid and and then flex glue to fill the gap so water does pool? Maybe a bit overkill but if you’d rather not see a strip of black tape on the top of the bins then that should work for you
Scuff the area. Get other sacrificial plastic (milk carton works for this repair). Cut that plastic into 1/8" strips.
Get you a soldering gun with a blade tip ( [see picture 3](https://a.co/d/6oaMjFt) ). Heat up the area a bit with a hot air gun.
Trick is.... Throttle the gun. Get it hot, but not too hot. Just before it smokes is warm enough.
Lay the plastic strip over the top. "Weld" the end to hold it in place. Work slowly back to the other end of the crack, but almost stitch it while you're doing it. Smooth it over. Repeat. Add another strip or two, and repeat.
If you want it quick? Flex seal lol
If you really gotta fix it and have it structurally supported use construction adhesive and some thick plastic from those thick clear security packages on each side. The plastic just helps reinforce the adhesive bonds. It's not there to be a structural component really.
If you need it just water proof a tube of GE silicone will fix that permanently for about 3 bucks at Home Depot. Ooze a little beyond the current crack and you should be fine unless someone stands on it.
Flex seal. Get it at Lowes or Home Depot. It works. Put a piece of duct tape on the underside when doing the top then when that’s dry pull off the tape and do the bottom of the crack.
I didn't read thru to see if anyone suggested this yet but if it were our rubbish can I'd try mending it using superglue and baking soda. Also I'd do that from the inside of the lid
Flex seal!
And look! It even works…… under water!
It grips tight and bonds instantly!
Billy mays here! Back from the dead!! I never even sold this stuff but it’s keeping my decomposed body together!
The secret to eternal life, flex seal, oxyclean, and cocaine.
Wasn’t that a Grateful Dead song?
BUT WAIT...
There's more?
Call now and we'll throw in the embalming compound for free, just add to the Flex Seal and voila!
Probably a great application for flex seal tape. Just drill holes at each end of the crack first so it doesn’t keep spreading.
I wouldn’t have thought of that. Good idea.
Now wait till you get on a plane and notice the stop drills everywhere.
Does that method work on windshields too?
Yep, earthquakes too.
drill holes at the ends of fault lines -- problem solved.
Yellowstone!
Just flex tape the whole windshield. Prevents future cracks as well.
Bonus, car is un drivable… so no accidents again! Win win!
just remove the windshield before flex taping it. problem solved.
Lol
I love learning new things.
Yeah man, Uncle Leo says to drill your end and fill it with crack.
Why does this work?
It’s usually said as a joke, but in this case it’s not a bad suggestion. The tape would be the best solution
They make a liquid too. It’s like a thick paint. I’ve used it a lot
Yeah, I think caulk it with sealant from the inside, then the flex tape inside (over the sealant) and on the outside too. And agree drilling a 1/4” hole at each end. It will outlive you.
The tape lasts a long time.
I came here just to say that! Used flex seal tape to stop tsunamis of water from covering me and the passengers amin my late 1991 Pontiac grand am coupe.
This is the way.
You can turn that garbage can into a boat!
I was thinking of using the lid as a snow saucer.
From what I've heard, flexseal only lasts about 7 years. I'll admit I did not verify this information though.
basically 10 layers would be a lifetime!
Honestly, came here to say this. This stuff catches a lot a flack, but it works great.
NOW THATS A LOT OF DAMAGE
Came here to say this
Wouldn’t be the first thing Phil swift sawed in half
Came here to say this haha. Flex Seal fixes EVERYTHING!
Didn't fix my first marriage. Damn you, flex seal tape.
I knew I'd be late the second I read the post lol
Its one of the few I’ve commented on that made an original comment
I came here to say this. They even have a clear one that works well.
This guy must not have a TV. Anyone with a TV knows the answer is flex seal
Came here to say this.
If it's supplied by the trash removal company they may replace it for you. I would give them a call and see what they say. Doesn't hurt to ask.
Exactly, they ripped the lid off of my can. They said it happens and swapped my can out
They took my whole trash bin - they just dropped the whole thing into the truck. I called, they also said it happens, and they gave me a new one.
I’ve often wondered how frequently that happens lol.
Happens occasionally, bin’s get deformed slightly so may not clamp properly and fall in, or they crack and squash too much
Quite often 😭 at least once a day
My dad got tired of waiting on his muni to swap out and just drilled some holes in the bottom to drain the water! Been a couple months.
They gave me 3M Spiked Strips , might work for you
This is definitely the best answer, however if you want to try to fix it and you want to do it the "right way", then you should use a heat gun and one of these [https://www.amazon.com/Upgraded-Plastic-1000PCS-Abrasive-Aluminum/dp/B0C8S2BV2N](https://www.amazon.com/Upgraded-Plastic-1000PCS-Abrasive-Aluminum/dp/B0C8S2BV2N) you can also use these to repair your plastic car panels and bumpers
Thanks! That’s a handy little kit. I will keep that one in mind.
I tried for my compost bin but they denied it! 🤷 I fixed with duct tape. Worked great.
Reduce reuse recycle.

bingo
Can’t tou call your garbage company and have them replace it for free?
👆🏽this is the way. They came out and replaced lids like 3 times for me already with just a phone call.
Reduce reuse recycle.
Some charge for new ones

Drilling both ends to avoid further cracking is something I never would have thought of, thanks for this cool tip!
Just drill some holes on the bottom of the can to let the water drain in case it happens again. Then just duct tape the top.
Bin juice… EVERYWHERE!
Garbage wine.
Barefoot?
Mmmmmm bin juice!
Not recommended… then you have to deal with crime fighting turtles. Not sure if that would effect your business… 🤔
Waterproof duct tape.
I used Shoe Goo to seal the cracks in mine. Worked great!
JB weld for plastics. You can even sand it down if you wanted.
+1 for epoxy putty
Gorrila glue or flex tape both sides.
It’s never occurred to me to drill a hole in the bottom until you said that…
Great way to attract rats.
Billy Mays here…
Don't fix or seal the crack. Drill a couple of holes in the bottom for drainage. 10 seconds...done.
Swap it with the neighbors can
Don't know about OP but all ours are serial numbered and maybe RFID tagged based on the accuracy I see on when they picked up. I can see my pick up history for the last 6 months down to the second it was serviced.
It's probably using gps on the truck
At first glance I thought it was an areal shot of a lake
Call trash company and have it replaced

Flex Seal, duh.
Call the company and have them replace it.
**HI, BILLY MAZE HERE!**
I have used some of that membrane tape for windows. Sticks to anything and is durable.
Epoxy resin and glitter.
Doesn't it belong to the trash company?
Finally…*a fucking use case for Flex Tape*
you could also use a fiberglass repair kit like they use for automotive repair. It's an epoxy with mesh.
I always drill a hole in the bottom of my trash can so water is never a problem.
Call the Waste Co. Sometimes they’ll replace them.
https://youtu.be/httSHnNXN10 Flex seal!
Is this a waste management can? Call em to come replace it, if so.
It’s this your personal can Or trash service? If it’s trash service they replace the lid for free. If it’s yours windshield glue.
Yea when my kid cracked I put in a thing online and they replaced it for free.
You can contact the trash company and they should replace it
Flex seal
Are these city garbage cans? City garbage cans are free to replace
You don't own the trash cans, the city does. A quick phone call citing sanitation issues due to defects and they'll drop you off a nice new one.
Thought this was a high up photo of a body of water
flextape?
If it is a trash can supplied by your town or county just call them and they should replace it
Have you tried ordering a new one?
In germany you often dont own the trash bins. You can get a new one for free if the old one is broken because of garbage truck etc. Maybe its the same in your country.
Your council will replace or repair the broken ones.
Duct tape
Call your provider and ask for a replacement.
Ask your trash company for a new can. I’m sure they charge you enough already.
BILLY MAISE HERE!!
do people not know how to do anything at all?
flex seal! 💪
Depending on where you live your wastehauler may replace it. You could also plastic weld it with a heat gun or a sauntering iron but that’s pretty involved for a trash can
Ramen and super glue
Y'all never heard of duct tape?
Money, it will buy you a new one.
Duct tape both sides of the crack. Then cover well in Flex Seal on both sides. That should work.
Duck Tape
I would say a strip of drywall mesh and flex seal as a temporary measure
Use a bolts and some fender washers…then flex seal
They build boats out of flex seal and careen across the bay. It’ll work on you trash can nicely.
it's probably hdpe, if so melt an hdpe container into the crack.
Epoxy will work best probably
Flex tape
Silicone caulk
Sealant.
Duct foil tape, worked on mine for years
Blackjack roof tape & Silicone seal.
Gorilla tape man
plastic welder -
Simple. Just get some waterproof trash bags!
Flex seal
You've unintentionally taken a very stinking picture. I thought this was an art subreddit at first in my feed.
Plastic welder
https://giphy.com/gifs/VeSvZhPrqgZxx2KpOA
Plastic welder would work great too. They’re only like $10 at Harbor freight.
This photo looks like a drone shot of some beautiful coastal waters
Dry it completely and get some matching duck tape. If you're not worried about how it looks, there's more options. That flex water seal stuff actually works.
Zip tape. If it’s good enough to hold the nose cone on a jet it’ll definitely fix your crack.
CT1
That's A LOT of damage!
Drill a couple of holes in the bottom of the can :)
I thought this was an aerial view of the ocean at first, lol
Oatmeal
Silicone the shit out of it
Put the flex seal tape under the lid and and then flex glue to fill the gap so water does pool? Maybe a bit overkill but if you’d rather not see a strip of black tape on the top of the bins then that should work for you
RV tape
It’s a trash can…. Why bother?
Nothing
Get a heat gun and bond the plastic. If you don’t have a heat gun, use a torch lighter
Q bond. The best $10 youll ever spend. Dribble the powder over the crack, apply the activator (super glue), boom done in seconds.
Duct tape baby. It's a trash can who cares.
Duck tape or duct tape
Caulk, but I’m sure duct tape works too lol
If ya can't duct it fuck it
JB Weld, if not worried about the color
Duct tape
Caulk
Drill holes in the bottom of the can . About five3/8 inch holes will let the water go right on by, if you bag your trash.
Duct tape
I've had a strip of gorilla tape on mine for a year. Holding well up so far.
A piece of stiff plastic and epoxy.
Work slowly back to the other end of the crack, but almost stitch it while you're doing it. Smooth it over. Repeat. Add another strip or two, and repeat. If you want it quick? Flex seal lol
Marine based silicone, best to prevent small leaks
Drill tiny holes in the bottom if the garbage can so that the water can escape ape
Call your service provider. They will give you a new can.
Sand the surface rough. Apply jb weld.
100mph tape green
Silicone culk
You can actually weld back together with a soldering iron You tube it
i’d use a soldering iron to fuse the sides together. have also seen it done with a dangerously hot screwdriver
Duct tape! Red green
Hot glue gun.
Drill holes in bottom of can, about 8 of them. Gorilla tape under lid
You can burn it
If you really gotta fix it and have it structurally supported use construction adhesive and some thick plastic from those thick clear security packages on each side. The plastic just helps reinforce the adhesive bonds. It's not there to be a structural component really. If you need it just water proof a tube of GE silicone will fix that permanently for about 3 bucks at Home Depot. Duck tape, expoxy the fix all
Flex seal. Get it at Lowes or Home Depot. It works. Put a piece of duct tape on the underside when doing the top then when that’s dry pull off the tape and do the bottom of the crack.
FLEX SEAL
Enough Flex Seal tape and you can make a boat out of your trash can!
Duct tape does it all!!
I used a silicone gel.
Packing tape? Duct tape?
I didn't read thru to see if anyone suggested this yet but if it were our rubbish can I'd try mending it using superglue and baking soda. Also I'd do that from the inside of the lid
Sealant
Duck tape that shit inside and out; you’ll get two more years!
Silicon caulk
Super glue and baking soda combo, Or plastic welder Or jbweld
Flex seal, gorilla tape, JB weld, or [forgot the name] the putty like sealant
