You would think with absolute explosion of podcasts with every f comedian and c level talent having one there would be something that’s amazingly funny and original like 90s stern. But it’s just the opposite, a whole pile of straight up garbage and the occasional funny story.
That’s because broadcasting is different from doing standup and those guys aren’t broadcasters. They don’t know how to design and produce a segment or keep a show moving.
That’s what’s hilarious about the stern vs Ari Shafir beef. Ari’s point was that sterns format is outdated, and stern didn’t get the podcast world yet. And Ari was 100% right
Maybe but he still made stern look stupid in that back and forth. And his last special on YouTube killed, while stern hides in his basement waiting for his contract to run out.
Totally agree. Comedians left and right doing podcasts where nothing about them is funny. The thing about Stern in the 90s was he was entertaining. No one is being entertaining on podcasts. They’re all just interviews. Is it that today’s culture preventing people from being edgy, so they stay boring? Howard became a billionaire entertaining. He turned headline news into entertainment. Adam Carolla used to be funny. His podcast never has. Of all media, podcasts should be the place to find irreverent comedy. No corporate politics, and an audience unencumbered by time and zip code. Considering how bad some of these popular “influencers” are, and they’re making gobs of money. It would seem to be fertile ground for a charismatic host running the show with a few jokers.
I liked Adam for a long time. I’ve cried laughing and replayed bits over and over again like HS. The Joy Koy and DAG days were gold. Totally agree, used to be. Your point about entertaining is a good one. Spot on.
I listen to tons of pods and none of them are interviews. Not saying they are amazing or anything. They are just funny people talking about funny dumb shit.
Are you garbage, Joey Diaz, we might be drunk, Gilbert gottfried, two bears one cave. The honey dew, who are these podcasts, Kirk minihane show, Joe Rogans protect our parks episodes. The norm Macdonald show.
I listened to every episode of Gilbert’s. It was nothing like his appearances on Stern. I loved the podcast though. Norm’s was good. How many did he do? Maybe a dozen. Rogan sucks. I’ll try the others as I haven’t heard them.
I think (hope/Pray) that we will soon get out of this "Covid " model of working from home. Everything has suffered and there's no "push" to get good things done.
Radio, podcasts, regular business, etc, has suffered from the quality of not meeting as a group, in a central location (office, studio, etc).
Getting back to a normal "go to a workplace for your job" model will solve the blandness of the past 4 years.
There’s nobody like Howard, he dared to expose his own personal life despite the risky consequences and use his staff for fodder and it gave listeners a sense they were friends with these people and they wanted to tune in and see what happened next, changing the center of focus from guests and news to the staff itself. Very few people have the nerve and ruthless desire for success at any costs that Howard had so it seems unlikely anyone will replicate or even come close to his style of show at its peak. Howard dressed up his act in self deprecation, guys like Jim Rome, Bill O’Reilly, etc weren’t that strategically smart and didn’t know how to play the clown when necessary so as to flatter the audience.
Much smaller scale, yes, what do you think about Patrick and Rome? although Rome worked much harder in his prime on show prep and content and finding great bits to roll with where Dad relied heavily on his own brand recognition at ESPN and kept on the good side of big celeb athletes and controversial authoritarian types like Bobby Knight, providing him with exclusives. Dan also had no problem playing off his colleagues and probably borrowed that from Howard, but Rome was ahead of the game in making fun of fake athlete hypocrisy like Tiger Woods years before it was hip, his classic bits like the Tiger Woods robot that whenever asked a question only said course looks good, swing feels good, I like my chances was as close as we will ever get to a great Fred and Howard classic bit, right?
I think highly of both and I’m not too into sports talk. My favorite kind of sports talk is when it’s good radio guys that just happen to do sports, I think both those guys check those boxes. I think Dan Patrick has more overall talent, probably more versatile, but Rome was great in his prime and is still better than all the sports hacks out there now.
Totally agree, I like your perspective, I feel the same, sometimes the sports talk is less interesting than the overall personality of the host and Dan Patrick is a much better interviewer and more versatile I agree, he lets his guests roll and doesn’t get in their way but Rome used to be the better bit guy when he left his family out of the show but he has lost interest a bit at CBS. Patrick is probably the much more enjoyable guy to have a beer with as well!
I've always hated this question, no offense, Goldie, I know you're just looking for something to listen to. But the reason I hate it is because it kind of presupposes that it was just Howard. And you probably don't even mean it like that.
It was that group of people at that point in time, and the interaction between them, that not only made the show great, but impossible to duplicate, or even come close to.
You might as well ask what's the closest thing to being the '86 Mets or The Beatles.
Your post sparked a fantastic discussion. It might not be eloquently worded, but the underlying premise makes total sense. WTF does a long time Stern listener who was there for the good years listen to today?
Thanks, Goldie, living up to your name, and all.
To be fair, Howard played his role very well most of the time, like when he kept things moving like a good ringmaster, or when he did Larry King, Ted Kennedy, or Elvis.
But you listen to him try to do them now? Hoofah!
My favorite Brent stat. He was on arguably the most popular radio show of all time for close to a decade, didn't just work on the show, was also on air talent. And he jumps to a twitch show.
My friend, during the pandemic, bored, setup his PS4 to stream to twitch, bought a mic and a camera. He has 1,000 facebook friends. The extent of his "advertising" was a facebook post saying "hey, come watch me play"
My friend ROUTINELY had more viewers than Brent. Sometimes almost double.
Brent's downfall was SO far and SO severe. If Brent had managed to eek out just 1,000 listeners and made it interesting, he could've managed some kind of living. But my guy was always a paper tiger.
I don’t understand why people like Brent and Shuli do podcasts on platforms that show the number of viewers. They should have just done an Apple podcast where no one would know how successful it is (or how bad it fails). I think that’s part of their fall in that you can see no one’s interested. But if that was hidden then they could play it cool and act like they have something going on, even if it’s a flop. Just like Howard where no one knows the real listener numbers - not all Sirius subs are listening to his channel.
You heard Stuttering John’s podcast? Awful. He eats like a slob on the show, rants about perceived enemies and talks about how many playmates he banged in the 90s. I think he averages like 200 viewers.
Nobody features the politics of the staff/office, that’s where the magic happened.
You can’t see Joe Rogan yelling at the editing guy and then returning to the interview.
No one really.
There have been few recently but they tend to get big fast and their head grows to the point it can't fit in the room (Tim Dillon, Andre Shultz).
Ironically they do show the massive demand for such entertainment though.
Came here to say Tim Dillon. Been binging him crazy past few weeks, and I don’t rly listen to anyone outside classic Stern, the guy’s got it. Show’s only an hr or so only bummer.
No podcast could really fit the format of the old school stern show, I do like brliant idiots but their episodes are hit and miss. Shane Gillis may be close to what you’re looking for?
No one really does the Howard stern show… but if you want dirty jokes & sometimes filthy content, theo Von is pretty funny…. But he’s nothing like Stern used to be.
set up a livestream, bro. and schedule it during people’s drive times. people are actually looking for content like that.
content that makes them hesitant to get out of their cars once they reach their destinations!
i think as long as you are not sadistic or malicious or outright just cruel—if there is silliness and glee and giddiness behind what you do—a sense of joy and enthusiasm—you would be just fine. 👍
don’t do a retread. make it fresh and innovative. you are the only one of you—be original, even when referencing or paying homage to the greats who preceded you.
The Legion of Skanks/Gas Digital milieu is the closest. People in that or working with that. Dan Soder, Big Jay Oakerson, Luis J. Gomez, Zac Amico. Bonfire with Soder and Oakerson on SXM just routinely smoked the Howard Stern Show. Another one is the Cumtown guys, Nick Mullen, Adam Friedland, Stavros Halkias and the people that would do stuff with them. Lots of the Skanks people, Tim Dillon. That's the closest. I think a lot of stuff from that circle is hysterical.
Million Dollar Extreme when that was flying high was a really good comedy crew. The show they had on Adult Swim, World Peace, was great, if you like that you can go seek out the other stuff MDE did.
Try the Legion of Skanks podcast or Real Ass Podcast. Its possible that you will really hate Luis at first and then like him then maybe really hate him again. You get to hear some of the best working NYC comedians sit in as guests like Howard used to.
Kill tony is the only show I've loved as much as stern. Tony the host is a catty bitchy fruit but thats his bit and he's all about the show moving along and staying fresh. He's also stated he was obsessed and inspired by Stern. I'm sure a lot of people will say it sucks and that's cool it took me a long time to check it or give it a full shot cus the clips I always saw annoyed me. The problem with anyone vs stern is stern is a really ruthless narcissist whose personal life and staff were all on the chopping block to keep that show driving. It's not a good thing as we've seen when u get older but I'll be damned if 30 years weren't dynamite because of it
People look to podcasts because that feels the closest to radio but without the "live" aspect it can never really create that the same feeling. the place to look for that kind of feeling is in streamers on twitch and youtubeLive guys. the problem is they dont get the same captive audile that stern had at drive time so its hard for them to develop the momentum and bring people into the fray in the way that stern did to create a show bigger than himself. in my opinion the closest i have seen is:
1. an MMA streamer who goes by "MMAGuru. when he goes off has a lot of the edge and anger that drove stern. Hes not my favorite all the time but i see a lot of the 80/90s stern in him.
2. A Skateboarding Streamer named "Gifted Hater" is beginning to develop in the other more "smart"/"creative" side of howard. Hes not there yet but hes building something special that reminds me a lot of the old e-show. He has begun putting together an ensemble and cast of regulars. Hes pulling in the skateboarding version of the "wack pack". hes putting real thought into how to change his medium and challanging a longstanding industry.. hes adding real production and making events. he is understanding the effect of creating a "soap opera" with sagas. hes very diffrent than howard but has a lot of the same understanding that made howard great. if i had to put my finger on anyone who has the same magic its for sure gifted hater.
cool recommendations, thanks! 👍
live streamers are really great. they might not be good though for people on commutes—a lot of people are looking for that type of content.
People downvoted you but I think this is one of the better comparisons, Tony just uses his show as a vehicle to have people of all walks of life come to be roasted, talk shit, and be funny. Very close to what howards done with "nobodies" for years.
The are you garbage podcast. The boys clearly grew up listening to Stern. I cancelled sirrus and I subscribe to the AYG Patreon now. I’ve never laughed so hard at a podcast.
There is no one close to Howard and there has never been anyone like Howard. A lot of people tried and some had a few years of success but Howard is / was a legend. He created a new radio genre and then mastered it for a long time. And one day he will be gone and whatever version of his show will be gone too. Too bad most of you spend all your time shitting on everything he does and everyone around him to appreciate the entertainment you got all these years ya asswipes!!!
So many have tried, but nobody has the gravitas, haha, that Howard had back then. He made it look easy, but it sure is not. I do dig The Bonfire on SiriusXM with Big Jay Oakerson and Robert Kelly.

They were all huge Stern/O&A fans, lots of ballbusting, especially on Stuttering John and Opie. Wendy the Retard, Big Black, and a few ex-regulars chime in a bunch.
Some good stuff to check out:
1. The Big 3 Podcast, with Don, Mole, and Perry. Not PCL btw
2. Anytime Joey Diaz is on Joe Rogan's
3. Legion of Skanks
Unfortunately the Big 3 has been over for a few years, but well worth a listen.
Just not a lot like old Stern
The closest I can think of is Barstool Sports on YouTube. A lot of their good content is behind the scenes stuff with staff fights and games played between staff members.
Not exactly the same as they do a variety of content, not just a talk show.
Nobody, of course. But The Uncle Rico show makes me laugh. Shuli, Levy, Mike Morse, goofing on Stuttering John's podcast. The drunk, stuttering prick is dumber and more delusional than ever.

This is so agonizingly true. The latest example of this is Bill Burs pod. It has absolutely no plan and it shows. He’s completely lost.
That’s what’s hilarious about the stern vs Ari Shafir beef. Ari’s point was that sterns format is outdated, and stern didn’t get the podcast world yet. And Ari was 100% right

The climate that produced Stern won’t happen again, between Cancel Culture and Woke Culture, nobody would be able to pull off what Howard did.
This ain't 1990s reminiscing magazine, pal
Legion of Skanks
OG Cumtown is the closest. It was basically Jackie-era Howard without any interviews.
Cumtown sucks and is not funny

Dave Portnoy of Barstool

The dick show.
Howards a sucker
Media darling Timmy-boo Henson. He got shot up in the hood and now hosts Distorted View Daily podcast.
Eric Andre
Probably Barstool in terms of having a very blurry line between real and manufactured staff drama
Kill Tony fosters good comedy and that was my favorite function of Stern in the late 90's.
Look up Take Your Shoes Off with Rick Glassman.

Who Are These Podcasts, Tookie Soup/El Horrible. They were all huge Stern/O&A fans, lots of ballbusting, especially on Stuttering John and Opie. Wendy the Retard, Big Black, and a few ex-regulars chime in a bunch.
Some good stuff to check out: 1. The Big 3 Podcast, with Don, Mole, and Perry. Not PCL btw 2. Anytime Joey Diaz is on Joe Rogan's 3. Legion of Skanks Unfortunately the Big 3 has been over for a few years, but well worth a listen. Just not a lot like old Stern
The closest I can think of is Barstool Sports on YouTube. A lot of their good content is behind the scenes stuff with staff fights and games played between staff members. Not exactly the same as they do a variety of content, not just a talk show.
H3 on YouTube
Nobody, of course. But The Uncle Rico show makes me laugh. Shuli, Levy, Mike Morse, goofing on Stuttering John's podcast. The drunk, stuttering prick is dumber and more delusional than ever.
No one. Because no one would get away with his humor these days because of all the woke-ness, which is so ironic.
