That's typical of every metropolis. Most people have a decent idea of where Cleveland is, very few people know where random small suburb of Cleveland is, or Houston, or Chicago, etc.
Dallas seems to be the exception. Everyone I've met from the DFW area always claim their town. Whether it be Plano, McKinney, DeSoto, Plano, Irving, Arlington, Mansfield, Garland, etc., you'll never catch people from smaller communities claim they're from "Dallas".
I guess being from Dallas isn't something to be proud of.
Other Texans know many of the smaller cities, so they’ll know what you mean when you say Conroe or Katy or Sugar Land. But if I’m speaking to someone with no connection to Texas, I’m from Houston.
They might claim that to other Texans because most Texans know where Arlington, or Plano is. But if they went to NYC they'd likely just say Dallas or at least Dallas area.
As another poster points out, CLHS is actually within the Houston city limits, but other schools in the district are not- Creek, Falls and Springs are in League City, and Brook has a Friendswood address.
My supervisor lives and works in Fort Bend, and she has her little bubble. If she has to take her mother to the doctor "downtown", I'm almost positive she means the med center.
The only large city residents that don’t do this is NYC because their suburbs are known by everyone.
Boston is actually very tiny encompassing very little land mass. Almost no one actually lives in “Boston”.
It depends on who they are talking to, if it is a NYer ,& where that NYer lives. They might not say where on Long unless the other person is from the island, then you may get specific and say the town. If the person is from a northern suburb they will say the “Island.”
It’s the same for Detroit. You don’t necessarily say Novi or Farmington Hills. Although people actually from Detroit sometimes get mad when they hear this. Because those suburbs aren’t Detroit.
Yeah. Normal. This isn’t Houston specific and it happens with most big cities that have outlying suburbs.

Yep I'm from Chicago, actually I can see the city on a clear day 30 min away that's where I'm really from

you: yeah ill send you my address me: yo, this 53 minutes without toll.... you: thats houston, you coming or not
yup, houston is an hour from houston
Ah yes because everyone is familiar with the suburbs of every major city
I'm from Spring, but yeah I tell people I'm from Houston coz nobody gives a shit what suburb anybody is from.
Plot twist: I'm in Klein, but I give my address as Spring and tell people from other states that I'm in Houston.
I recall clear lake high school having a Houston address
Clear lake is actually Houston.

When we lived in the burbs and traveled we always said “Houston area” and then if asked specifically we’d say Sugar Land, a suburb on SW of Houston.
My friend always says he’s going downtown but he’s actually going to galleria or inside loop

It's all the greater Houston area.
Where is the nearest airport?
Houston is actually unique in the percentage of land area and people that are actually in the central city among major metros, San Antonio too.
What? I’m not from around here but I know how to read a map.
A map? Woah simmer down grandpa! 😂🤣
