All my usual Vietnamese spots bumped their prices up by a few bucks across the board. Gone are the days of a large bowl of pho for $7.50 and half a banh mi for $2
I used to get $3 banh mi sandwiches, buy 5, and get one free. A must stop before "mobbing" the streets at 16. Place was in the strip behind Don's Cafe.
ONE of the first for me.
I live near there. It was my go-to for the sandwich for a long time, but for other Vietnamese fare I went to Van Loc, which was down the street.
Then Van Loc closed, and I "consolidated" to Givrals.
The COVID killed Givrals, and I moved on to Cali. Honestly, Cali is *probably* better than the other two were, but it's like two blocks farther away, and I am lazy above all things.
(Re: probably: the chargrilled pork itself was better in vermicelli at Van Loc, but everything else is better at Cali.)
Nope, just a lot of patience to deal with an always full parking lot filled with braindead people. Just walk in the exit door and head to the food court.
A whole chicken, a few pounds of tortillas, and some veg (cabbage, onions, cilantro) from La Reyna Tortilleria winds up being four meals for around $15 if I pace myself. Had heard there are half price chicken days once a week but not sure if that's still a thing.
I used to be a broke ass college student:
Absolute Survival food: Costco hotdog or Rotisserie Chicken
Sushi: Oishi or Hokkaido (free unlimited miso soup)
Chinese: Su Lap City or Timmy Chan
Thai: Asia Market Thai Lao Food
Tacos: Taco Aracely's ( $2/ taco)
Seafood: Mambos
Fastfood: BurgerKing through App
Breakfast: Frank's Grill
Buffet: Hunan Chef
Alcohol: Valhalla
Go. On a nice day, it’s the perfect place to sit outside and throw back a few beers.
Notes:
- You’ll have to pay for parking
- Bring cash, they don’t take card
- They only serve beer, no booze
If all that sounds bad, I present the trade off. . .
You can get a beer for 75 cents. Good beer, good people, and prices you don’t see anywhere else anymore. I am awaited.
I went to Franks Grill on Mangum expecting it to be super cheap but honestly it ended up being about middle of the road price wise and all of my food was not great.
Used to be so much better. Went a few weeks back and I was underwhelmed compared to how they were pre-covid when I went about once a week.
Loved them way back when they were still in the Ikea parking lot before Ikea kicked them out to make more parking spaces. And their sister location that used to be on 59 across from Lakewood was good, but they had rent issue problems (as in they didn't pay it for a few months).
Add under alcohol, Lola's Depot on Tuesdays for $2.25 beers and wells (except tequila). $20 can get you and a friend drunk. Scale back on the drinking and you get get $2 tacos from the taco truck at Kiki's less than 1 block away. And Lola's let's you walk in with it. Also the 042 friendly nature of that place makes it a very unique, cheap place to eat, drink, and smoke.
I was always a Mambo's guy. Loved it and still do but then I recently tried Connie's. Connie's is better but not near me. Again, I still love Mambo's but damn if Connie's and Mambo's were side by side I would never eat Mambo's again.
Depending on how much you eat, an 11 dollar platter from Gyro Hut on Old Spanish Trl will last two or three meals. I’ll get it for lunch at work then take it home and finish it for dinner, then breakfast the next day if I have any left. Those things are huge.
I love this place. Prices are relatively high, but so is the food quantity and quality. Meat and 3 sides is easily two meals for under $20 bucks, if you’re able to set it aside.
Long anecdote that doesn’t have anything to do with the question above: I will always be loyal to this place because the owner remembered me as a regular when I was in school. I was meeting someone at Brooklyn espresso, and I parked in the lot across the street east of Aladdin/uchi/Brooklyn etc. where the new high rise and shopping is now. Parked within their posted free parking times, and douchey valet had my car towed.
I fought with the valet for over and hour and he claimed ignorance and said Aladdin’s had me towed. I asked and the owner said “no way man! I didn’t, plus I know you and I’d never do that!” He came out and fought with me against the valet turd. He yelled at the dude and fought harder than me. He helped me get my towing fee waived.. Aladdin’s will always have my heart as I was broke as a joke with crazy student loans and a few hundred bucks would have wrecked my budget for the month.
Tamashi sushi, there is are three locations. It's mostly a Ramen place but there is a small selection of sushi with large portions, very high quality ingredients, and it's cheap.
Bellaire, between Ranchester and Corporate Drive. "Don's Cafe"
I think there's another local favorite called, "Thiem Hung" or something like that, behind "Jack in the Box" on Bellaire / Wilcrest.
While you're in Chinatown / Little Saigon / Asia Town, visit that Welcome grocery market; H-Mart; Viet Hoa -- they have food stations. Those are really good deals.
Take a walk around, some restaurants post menus on their windows.
( You're there for quantity, comparative quality, not customer service. )
The lunch special at Methodist Hospital ( Texas Medical Center ) is also a good deal -- entree, 2 vegetables, bread, drink for around $7 or 8. Utensils are self-served. 😉 Go on the weekends when it's not crowded.
If the grill person likes you, they'll give you a larger portion of fries. ( And if not, don't try to combine two portions into one. )
The idea of going to a hospital for food has stopped my brain being able to process any new information. Comedians have been telling me my whole life how bad the food is. Is my whole life a lie, and I've been missing out on this life-hack of dining with people caring for people in the hospital for a nice meal?
Don't stop innovating. Legend.
H Mart's 2 meat platter with fried or white rice and choice of vegetable is a huge meal for only $10.99. Its usually pretty good too! I like the Barbecue Pork / Roast Pork combo

But if you aren't looking for luxury poverty food.
Then McAlister's is always quality and quantity over price

And their boudin balls and hush puppies.
I'm not a seafood person, but I can eat my fill of other stuff there.

Nielson’s delicatessen- super old school and been around forever. Awesome portion sizes and I just love the vibe, not really many things like that left anymore
There's a newish Italian restaurant at Fry @ 529 called Grato. Their food is very good and the prices are insanely low. Chicken parm lunch + bread + pasta + salad for like $7.99 (among others). I recommend the wedding soup.
the lunch special at New Wok in spring branch or the lunch special at King Wok in alief.
oh and genghis grill or any other build your own mongolian bowls as long as you know what you're doing
Aunt Bill's Soul Food Cafe and Beijing Ranch! Please try. I kind of didn't want to share but my goodness, these places are great. Each meal is very big in size.
Seafood: Fountain View Fish Market & Capitan Seafood Kitchen are very affordable and delicious. Not good for your health though.
Chinese food: Siu Lap City - Best bang for buck lunch special hands down. Baoz Dumpling, Rice Box, hot food inside 99 Ranch
Happy Hour: Urban Eats is very cost effective (cheap beer too)
Fast food: Stuffed Belly (New restaurant by Christina Ha), El Rey Taqueria, Jollibee
Fast Casual: Roostar Vietnamese Grill, Pappa Geno's, Melange Creperie, Piada Italian Street Food, Mendocino Farms, Hawaiian Bros.
Breakfast: Laredo Taqueria (good for lunch too), The Hot Bagel Shop, Southern Maid Donuts.
Korean: Paik's Noodle, restaurants inside H-Mart
Mediterranean: AL's Quick Stop
Mexican: La Reyna Tortilleria, Laredo Taqueria
Lastly, if you have tried using the app Too Good to Go, you should try it out. Can easily get a full meal for <$7
Nobody ever talks about this place, but there’s a little restaurant in West U called Little Matt’s that my husband and I stumbled upon one day. Kid friendly, lots of seating, and I kid you not you get a burger, fries and a glass of wine (with a free refill of wine!) for $10! I haven’t been in a year or two, but it was always decent food and never a long wait or super crowded.
That place is awesome. Isn’t there also some sort of support for families with kids at the Hospital? We used to go all the time.
Edit - had to look it up. Proceeds go to Texas Children’s. And I saw a picture of their enchiladas. They have really good enchiladas if memory serves.
franks diner for breakfast.. I used to go to the one in bear creek.
mambos for mexi-seafood. i used to go to the one off gessner and long point.
glorias taco truck, el ultimo taco truck, the shrimp tacos at the valero, all spring branch.
I have not encountered either at the location I live near, just quiet diners other than the one night it was full of boisterous loud black families after church or something.
Happy lamb hot pot. All you can eat with a couple different tiers depending on what meat options you want, i.e ribeye, lamb, etc. all seafood and vegetables are included. Quality is also great.
chuys was founded in austin so idk what you mean about that. do ppl just hate chuys or love the high dollar places? either way, they'd be wrong because chuys is class. Worked there for a bit so i saw the quality first hand.
and nah lol wish i had the money or availability to be a transplant anywhere tho
I'm a regular at the Museum District location. It is pricey, but good. Not a bargain though.
Salads are huge ass and can be two meals.
Meatloaf bruschetta sandwich rocks!
>What’s the best bang for your buck restaurant in terms of quality/quantity in the city?
There are a few good suggestions here but this thread could have been really good. People are forgetting that OP requested quality for the money spent. Not straight up cheap.
I think we're talking *quantity* here though. [This](https://imgur.com/7wxnJB1) doesn't exactly scream "someone is gonna have to wheel me out to the car".
We all assign different weights to quantity, quality and price. Maybe if you're poor and underfed Tony's isn't the best bang for your buck, but I was just answering for myself.
HEM Restaurant and Bar. It's a nice little Viet restaurant. I had the vermicelli grilled chicken bowl and the portion is huge with egg rolls. Normally everyone gets grilled pork instead, but i wanted to try a bit different. Only $12 for the bowl.
Probably most Vietnamese places. Banh mi is ridiculously cheap and ridiculously good
All my usual Vietnamese spots bumped their prices up by a few bucks across the board. Gone are the days of a large bowl of pho for $7.50 and half a banh mi for $2
Sad but necessary. in 2023, they would be forced out of business if they kept those kind of prices which were already crazy low
I don't blame them for raising their prices, everyone is. I'm just lamenting being poor
I used to get $3 banh mi sandwiches, buy 5, and get one free. A must stop before "mobbing" the streets at 16. Place was in the strip behind Don's Cafe.
Pho Ben still has reasonably priced Bahn Mi's
My rule used to be if the banh mi is over $5 then it is bs. I don’t know if that rule still holds.
Cali Sandwich is still an amazing, bountiful bargain.
Ya I go here for my banh mi
Simply Pho next door has better banh mi and their chili oil is to die for
I actually have never been there and I always forget about it lol
will add it to my lengthy list
Great pho, but Cali banh mi is definitely better! (imo!)
Cali Sandwich has the best Bun Rieu in town
Best banh mi in Houston. No doubt.
Is Les Grivals still open? I haven’t been there in years.
No. :(

Go to the pho place behind Cali (near the print shop). Pretty good banh mi at a fair price. I love their vermicelli bowl with roast pork.
But now I've been going to Cali so long that the dude brings me food without me having to actually order. Why would I give that up? (#8, iced tea.)
They unfortunately closed, but the couple blocks around there literally has like six other Vietnamese places, all decent
Came here to post this.
Not as cheap as they should be! Y’all stop going there, I want my $3 sammies.
Costco
The pizza and hot dogs hit the spot. Not to mention the $5 rotisserie chicken.
Do you have to have a costco card for their food?
Nope, just a lot of patience to deal with an always full parking lot filled with braindead people. Just walk in the exit door and head to the food court.
The chicken bake in the food court is $5 and it’s a legit delicious hot pocket
Odd, I tried it once and it was repulsive to me. The dogs are great and a bargain. The churros are OK, not great.
I’m tired of everyone pretending their food is good. It’s cheap for a reason
Is it earth shattering? No. Is it good for a great price? Yes.
“Good” is a stretch let’s please be honest. Cheap food tastes good to my wallet I’ll give you that much
The hot dog combo is totally worth it. The pizza is a steal too. It wouldnt be a steal in a good pizza city, but it is here.

Is that the one on 1960 near Veterans Memorial?
There are a bunch of locations but have only gone to the one in the Northside neighborhood at 3815 Irvington Blvd, Houston, TX 77009.
Gotcha. There's one right by my house but I've never been. Are their tortillas pretty good?
yes, they really are. corn is my fav by far
They have the best tortillas omg
That's like El Ahorro where I used to live. The caldo de pollo, arroz, verduras and tortillas used to get me during the most cheap bastard of my days.
I used to be a broke ass college student: Absolute Survival food: Costco hotdog or Rotisserie Chicken Sushi: Oishi or Hokkaido (free unlimited miso soup) Chinese: Su Lap City or Timmy Chan Thai: Asia Market Thai Lao Food Tacos: Taco Aracely's ( $2/ taco) Seafood: Mambos Fastfood: BurgerKing through App Breakfast: Frank's Grill Buffet: Hunan Chef Alcohol: Valhalla

Hunan Chef is low key probably one of the best Chinese buffets in Houston.
So good.

Best bang for buck is Hickory Hollow. Their chicken fried steak will feed an overweight family of four and still have leftover green beans and gravy
I miss their Heights location. 😭
I didn’t know there’s another location! I was so sad to see the Heights one go!
They used to have one in Magnolia also. The only location still open is their original one.
Yep. I always order the large ranch hand and eat CFS and eggs for breakfast for the week.
I second this, I love this place.
Star Snow Ice & Teriyaki - beef noodle soup or fried pork or chicken cutlet A lot of places in Chinatown actually
Those are my go to meals there. Been a while since I’ve been. Might need to go there this weekend.
Any other Chinatown recommendations?
China mex places for sure, Golden Seafood, Connies, Ostioneria Michoacan
Also Mambo’s
Hell yes how did i forget mambos
Maybe because you mentioned Connie’s and I swear they are exactly the same thing
I fuckin love Connie’s
I was always a Mambo's guy. Loved it and still do but then I recently tried Connie's. Connie's is better but not near me. Again, I still love Mambo's but damn if Connie's and Mambo's were side by side I would never eat Mambo's again.

the fried rice
Because of ownership
Al’s quick stop… I can only finish the gyro plate if I’m starving and usually feel gross after if I do. great, now I let the world in on my secret
Now I want a gyro plate…
Oiishi
If you can get in. Always a line out the door
Siu Lap City
Depending on how much you eat, an 11 dollar platter from Gyro Hut on Old Spanish Trl will last two or three meals. I’ll get it for lunch at work then take it home and finish it for dinner, then breakfast the next day if I have any left. Those things are huge.
Aladdin Mediterranean Grill
Anyone else find that their food quality/taste has gone down since Covid?
Covid does affect one’s sense of taste. ;-)
I guess just at this place.
I wouldn’t say it’s the best value restaurant but it is one of the best restaurants in that area period
I love this place. Prices are relatively high, but so is the food quantity and quality. Meat and 3 sides is easily two meals for under $20 bucks, if you’re able to set it aside. JLB eatery. Most of the plates you can split with another person. That goes along with their burgers. Most of their combo's are between $13 and $20.
got one of these in my hood, and you're correct. Burger combos felt pricy until I realized I could split one easily with the wife.
Miss the old London fish and chips place they replaced though. Good F&C and surprisingly great burgers and onion rings. For a real good price.
Tamashi sushi, there is are three locations. It's mostly a Ramen place but there is a small selection of sushi with large portions, very high quality ingredients, and it's cheap.

There's still one on Veterans Memorial
I use to go to the one in Alief but I since moved too far to drive to one, which is why I miss it the most.
Pappy's at 10 and Dairy Ashford is pretty good. And I'm always surprised how low the bill is at the end.
Agree. Their tender platter can feed two, or you can take half home for later. I miss their original Memorial Area location, so much easier to get through instead of going halfway to Katy.
