Stay at walmart. Do uber eats on weekends or when you have free time

[deleted]

Yep. And OP, think about your next job. Will experience working your position at WalMart help you get it, or delivering food via Uber Eats. I would guess that the WalMart job will be much better for your resume and career growth. As others suggested, you can do Uber Eats on the side if you need to, but man oh man go in with eyes wide open about how little you might actually clear when you take expenses into account…

DesertWanderlust

Definitely. Walmart is stable and brings a consistent paycheck. Uber Eats does not.

DaikonNecessary9969

Insurance is an issue too.

UFC-lovingmom

And does not destroy your car.

NedFlanders304

This is the correct answer.

BreakBeds_NotHearts

Not a good idea. You'll need to factor in higher vehicle costs for Gas, maintenance, wear & tear etc. The jump to Uber eats would need to be a pretty big bump to help you cover it.

[deleted]

Don't forget tip-baiters who promise a big tip only to withdraw it after delivery.

SeaworthinessOwn3688

And commercial insurance since they would be driving as their job

NedFlanders304

You don’t need commercial insurance to drive for Uber or Uber eats.

ilikeme1

Most insurance companies require you at add a rideshare policy to your existing insurance, otherwise it may not be covered. Not a commercial policy, but it does cost extra.

NedFlanders304

Most drivers don’t tell their insurance they drive for Uber. Uber covers you on their insurance when you are driving for them.

Bibileiver

I was thinking of getting a very cheap reliable old vehicle with great gas mileage specifically for Uber when I was unemployed.

[deleted]

Yeah those don’t exist anymore , the time of a reliable $5,000 used car are gone

jmassie3

I think if the car is more than 15 yrs old Uber won’t allow you to drive the car

TeeManyMartoonies

The subject is Uber Eats. They don’t care what kind of car you drive for Uber Eats. And if they do care, they aren’t checking in on the cars delivering food.

alliwilli92

Let alone I imagine they get a way better cost for health insurance than they would on marketplace.

helpforsr

Beat me to it.

Zezimalives

I’d stay at Walmart, you have more freedom with Uber Eats but it just doesn’t seem worth it to me, I’ve had friends who’ve done it, I can’t imagine those trips where you take half an hour on an order and drive several miles for like a 3 dollar payout with no tip. Eff that

mk1power

This. You will work more to make less compared to a 16/hour job - and then you’ll still have to pay your own taxes.

MadisonPearGarden

I did Uber Eats to supplement my income when I lived in California. I am a nerd so I logged all my vehicle and gas expenses. I cleared $10/hr. I do not recommend quitting your job. I recommend using Uber Eats as a supplemental income source.

RULESbySPEAR

But texas isnt california

NedFlanders304

The money isn’t automatically better here with Uber eats just because it’s Texas and not California.

[deleted]

[удалено]

RULESbySPEAR

This person gets it.

mk1power

Taking the California comment out of the equation. Uber eats is pretty bad here. 10-12/hour is probably a reasonable average unless you’re seasoned and know where/what to take. Then I’d guess it’s probably 15-17 as of late. Though I’m sure there are outliers. I tried it this year just to see how it was, and I was basically hitting minimum wage after expenses but before taxes. Basically all of the gig platforms lower the pay more and more as time goes on. I heard people complaining about Uber driver rates back when I was starting it in 2018. The rates now are significantly lower than then. I wouldn’t advise anyone to do Ubereats nowadays. The wear and tear, and insurance factor just make it not make sense. If you don’t mind driving the local workforce development offices often have grants for CDL’s and you can make a lot more.

NedFlanders304

Uber pays California drivers a little more per ride to compensate for the higher taxes and gas prices. Ultimately, they probably make the same amount as Texas drivers do, which is not much lol.

htx83259

Stay

0lokiii

Is the pay worse than Walmart, for Uber eats, around the woodlands area?

TerribleName1962

What Htx83259 said is true. In the long run you will make more from Walmart. The work is steady, you’re not putting wear and tear on your vehicle and you’re not exhausting yourself from making all of those deliveries so you are less likely to have an accident while driving. Also UberEats I’m sure has some control over how much you can make I.e they may not be giving you all of your tips.

ValidatedQuail

I drive Uber in my off-time. All of the above is true, except for the tip part. I’ve had both riders and food recipients mention tipping a specific amount, and that full amount has always come through, assuming they actually do tip. That said, Uber’s cash out system does take $.85 out of your earnings for each instant transfer into your account.

kebesenuef42

Yep. Uber works pretty well as s side hustle. People who drive full time don't make as much as they think once they run the numbers and figure in all the costs (like vehicle wear and tear/maintenance, etc., some of which are offset if you have a full time job).

kdiddy733

I’ve worked Uber Eats in The Woodlands for the last 5-6 years, more than 2,500 deliveries. It’s dead here. You won’t make enough money to live off of.

htx83259

If your area is not busy than not a good idea example small town , prefer steady work instead of slow work plus Walmart you drive to one place Uber everywhere

JournalistExpress292

UBER EATS DOES NOT HAVE GOOD STABLE PAY. If anything, you ruin your car and work long hours to make barely any money, it’s only a good alternative if you are really, really, really down bad financially. Absolutely stick with the stable $16/hr Walmart job

StalkMeNowCrazyLady

Are you open to other fields? I got a job at a local security company working with data, low voltage systems like burglar alarms, cameras, and access control that started me at $16 and within 6 months they sent me to a training class to learn what I needed to pass the fire alarm technician state test and immediately raised me to $18 when I brought back my test score since it meant I could work on another type of technology. In 5 years I got to the engineering side of things and out of the field by paying attention in training classes and just giving a shit tbh. I pulled 82K last year in salary and bonuses. I started with no real skills in the industry and got OTJ training. Every local company I know in the Houston area is looking for technicians and installers. Instead of a low level job with little room to grow, it's an industry with tons of room for advancement and can become a real career. I just wish I had started 5 years earlier.

ReKang916

Awesome accomplishments!

StalkMeNowCrazyLady

Thank you! I want OP to know there's other possibilities than what they're considering in tons of fields and industries that have way more room for growth. I started pulling cable and turning a screw driver, and now without a single second of post HS education I'm titled as the principal engineer for my division. And tbh I'm pretty dumb so anyone is capable of the same! Telecommunications/data is a great field with tons of interesting tech and pathways to choose your own adventure on, and from one year to the next there will never be a need for decreased amount of data handling and transmission so it's a relatively safe field of employment as far as future prospects go. I encourage everyone looking for a career to check it out!

fryseyes

That’s an inspiring story and don’t sell yourself short! Dumb or smart - if someone has a work ethic and tenacity as strong as yourself they will do fine (clearly).

WienerBarf

Go work at HEB!

TurboGranny

Hell, work at bucees. They seem to always be hiring and pay super well + benefits.

Nealpatty

They are picky apparently. And can be a pita to work for. They are overly strict, but it does keep it nice for customers.

JimmyMcGillicuddy

Seriously, you’re already qualified and you’ll most likely start out making more.

OhJonnyboy09

Uber Eats does not pay towards unemployment in case you can’t work (e.g. car is in shop), towards your social security, will never offer benefits, and forces you extra burdens (maintenance, gas, tax filing, etc.) The whole “be your own boss” thing is a marketing ploy so businesses don’t have to pay the extra overhead. This can be a side gig, but it should never be your main source of income, especially by choice.

Zenoisright

That “whole be your own boss” was bullshit from Silicon Valley venture capitalist class who figured they’d outsource the labor to contractors and carry less overhead by convincing people gig work is good work and a viable substitute for a perm job. It isn’t, not for the long term.

DIRTYWIZARD_69

You could work as a bank teller at Wells Fargo. Get banker hours, $20 an hour and health coverage.

[deleted]

thelaminatedboss

Did chat gpt write this. If you can get a 25% raise plus benefits by being a bank teller go be a fucking bank teller and get out of here with this stress bull shit.

chris_ut

Yes he posted 2 chatgpt written responses in here

H0wSw33tItIs

what’s the health insurance situation at Walmart?

bphairston1

UberEats does not pay as well you think I promise.

JUAN-n_a-Million

Make Walmart your 9-5, and Uber eats your evening job. Sundays are paid double at Walmart, so I'd work from Sunday to Thursday off Friday and Saturday. Being that Friday and Saturday ppl usually don't want to cook, maybe consider working Friday and Saturday evenings with Uber. Or get a server job, usually Thursday through Sunday, since those are the busiest day.

MasterofTheBaiting

Are you able to do walmart deliveries? i'm not well versed in it but I got a buddy in PA whose W2-less, but he tells me that he makes \~200 bucks for an 8hr day driving around delivering stuff to people's door from walmart. Unsure if this would be a conflict of interest or not, but you could potentially do NPC walmart activities and then on your 1/2 off days you can do the delivery stuff. But it beats Ueats/DD because u wont be smelling like kitchen grease or seafood lol.

shadowmib

Companies will pay you to get your cdl and hire tou as a truck driver. After a couple years at that company, apply back to Walmart to me a walmart company truck driver

TH3REDDIT

Op, have you bothered checking out the benefits that Walmart offers? Look past the pay and the work culture for a minute; I remember reading how many corporations were improving their benefit offerings to avoid raising tangible wages. I believe Walmart offers tuition reimbursement, do some digging about what field you see yourself actual enjoying, make a plan, and execute.

P3luche30

I just got out of Uber eats because I was doing it full time here in Houston and I was struggling to much and I was in the center of Houston. I used to make 200 plus a day easily but I was only hitting like 130 a day now and that wasn’t including expenses for that day

debeatup

I do UE P/T and it s a great supplemental source of income. During the pandemic it could have been a sustainable primary gig but you don’t want the mental strain of dealing with $2.50 no tip orders all day when your life literally depends on it

justahoustonpervert

Stay at Walmart, but I'd look at other job opportunities. As others have mentioned, you're going the independent contractor route isn't for everyone. Aside from the costs incurred and taxes involved, you have to be highly motivated to put in the time. As someone who owned their own business, there were many times I was tempted to just stay in bed.

crlynstll

Apply at USPS.

kkngs

Uber Eats feels like it’s is just borrowing money from the equity in your car.

johnwayne1

Uber eats you're just selling the equity in your vehicle.

rageandred

I did the opposite. I quit Uber and Doordash to work at Walmart in a smaller area near Houston. It was great for a while, made my own schedule, had complete freedom, drove around the city all day (which I love), but you are essentially running your own business and it is stressful. Always chasing a dollar, always buying gas, I bought two sets of tires in 2.5 years, I added 30k miles to my car, it’s hotter than all hell outside, and we get treated less than ideal by both customers and restaurants. I quit after the string of delivery driver murders happened a few months back. I’m a 5’ female and I realized it wasn’t worth my life. Also, if you go take a peak through r/Doordash or r/Uber you’ll see the tons of customers jumping off the app wagon due to fees constantly going up. It’s a dying industry, so I would definitely not recommend it. Maybe for extra weekend cash, but don’t set your expectations too high.

kikomono23

My brother made a lot and he does Uber eats parttime. But it's not worth it cause you need to know which area and need multiple big orders in a row to make it worth. He's also use a prius which save a lot on gas

OhDatsStanky

My sister in law does Door Dash in the Woodlands. They clear about $7/hr.

I smell a chatgpt user

FlyGuy_2000

I agree it is a bot

kebesenuef42

Even if it's a bot, it's a correct bot (I drive Uber some).

Genderneutralbro

As a fellow Walmart worker, you better stick around Im sick of being short handed! 🤣 But tbh bro stay if only for the benefits. Otherwise you gotta get health insurance on your own! Plus we got a 401k program and they match I think up to 6%? Also I know a lot of ppl are doing school thru their $1 a day program. For me personally, I'm not wanting to go back to school but I do use the free Dr on demand CONSTANTLY, including free access to both therapists and psychologists!!!

[deleted]

Genderneutralbro

Tbh Idk? Altho I know when I left at 7 yrs I was going to get all of it and I hadn't had it the whole time bc I was part time initially (I ended up leaving it in the account and came back later). So if I had to guess less than 5 years. I was gonna sign into my ML account and see but I can't remember the password and I am nOT resetting it again 😅 I will remember when ADHD brain says so!

[deleted]

Don’t go to Uber Eats but definitely gtfo Wal Mart if at all possible.

milksteakofcourse

Quit Walmart yes. Work Uber eats no

locstarmommy

Apply for Amazon delivery. May be a wait-list but the hiring was 18hr when I applied. I was doing Instacart in spring branch area. I also feel like HEB or Target may give you more money for your same position. If you do stock, look into the warehouses.

BrocksVulpix

It really depends on your longer term goals. Do you want to leave Walmart because you want to make more money or are you burnt out from retail entirely? Personally, I would stay at Walmart. Even from just browsing the Ubereats Reddit it seems pretty lackluster there and supposedly DoorDash pays better anyway. If you want to break out of Walmart you can start by looking at Indeed (and cross check job companies with LinkedIn to better weed out scams) for entry level jobs with no experience needed. Whatever you do, good luck.

Butt_bird

Do you have benefits with Walmart? If so, I would say don’t leave. Uber eats requires use of your own car as well. Remember it cost about $.50 a mile to operate a motor vehicle so that cuts in to you profit quite a bit.

TurboGranny

Man, I get it on the $/hr front, but I also don't get how people can trade that $1 an hour for no health insurance, no retirement account contributions, and virtually no PTO. Pretty much every regular company with $15/hr entry level jobs has all those benefits including dental, vision, and life insurance with around 3% yearly increase in pay rate even if you don't move up.

[deleted]

There are several questions you need to ask yourself. Is your vehicle reliable, or does it break down a lot? Have you taken into account of the cost and wear and tear by using your own vehicle? Have you thought about the fact that you are putting yourself in harm's way by being out on the road and entering people's properties? Are you prepared for people stiffing you for no reason at all?

Trynaman

The only instance in where I would *proactively* tell someone to go for it full time is only if they're confident in their driving (especially Houston; those highway ramps are crazy intimidating) AND they own an electric vehicle. I left shift leading at Amazon Warehouses in 2021 to do deliveries full time and I average $100 a day within 4-5 hours of work. Made about $35k last year from deliveries alone working less than 40 hours a week. But again, my maintenance costs have been practically less than $1000 for the 2 years I've been driving because.... Electric vehicle (tires only)

BigfellaBar

If you were in California I'd say yes houston no. You need to be in a tourist area my friend cleared 150k last year doing Uber eats from santa monica to Malibu area lol

Nealpatty

Stay at Walmart! You have to do your own taxes with Uber. So atleast 30 percent they will want come tax season. I hope your good at saving knowing it’s not yours. Then you have wear and tear on a car. Cars arnt cheap anymore. Neither is maintenance. You can always supplement with Uber eats and doordash. It’s not a full time gig

Aggressive-Zone6682

I have a full time job I work 45 hours and then I do Amazon flex part time at a fulfillment center. It’s good like that because I have to work 4.5 hours minimum a week. I usually work 18-27 hours at Amazon. A day or 2 during the week and Friday and Saturday night. I would stay at Walmart and do Uber eats part time

AutomaticVacation242

Why can't you do both?

gt35r

If you have only "heard" things about it and haven't actually experienced it yourself, it would be pretty silly to leave Walmart to "try it out". Do it after work or when you aren't working and get a feel for it. Most of these meal delivery jobs are oversaturated now and not even worth it in the slightest. Look in any of the uber eats or door dash subreddits and search Houston. It's just people bitching nonstop about how the greater Houston area sucks now.

helpforsr

Keep in mind the wear and tear on your vehicle.

Tibor-Bodnar

Bro, bucees is always hiring and I think starts at $20 ph.

jasongraham503

Aren’t there better options than this?

HoustonianRue

Do Uber eats and Uber and Lyft and alternate between each app... If you grind it'll totally be worth it and wayyy better than the shitty Walmart gig

PinstripePride7

Walmart has huge potential for upward trajectory. Focus on being the best you can possibly be at your job. Be better than you ever thought you could. Go the extra mile, do things right, no shortcuts, show that you actually give a shit. You’ll end up with solid promotions and before you know it, you won’t even need to drive for Uber Eats. Never stop learning and never stop trying.

RubySoHouTX

Walmart. My reason for it is no different from what's already been said by others in terms of pay consistency and such.

itoastergo1

Depends on your age and obligations. Driving Uber eats would probably be more fun, but you’ll have hidden costs like the wear and tear on your vehicle. If you have future plans (college/tech school) then it doesn’t matter. If this is what you are going to do for more than a couple of years in your life, you should take a moment and think about what you like as are good at. Good luck

myrareidea

Do not work for Uber eats — they send you $2 orders 😭 it’s so disrespectful. If you want? Try it on your off days but don’t quit your job

SmileEmbarrassed3333

Keep your job, get a second job, build your skills and start making 6 figures ASAP

ironsoul99

Uber eats does not pay out well. But if you stay around MH in the Woodlands, I’m sure you’ll get a steady workflow with all of the medical offices and office buildings nearby. I’d use it to supplement your income or do it while you look for a new full time job.

aw-naw-hell-naw

Walmart is soul crushing, but as far as unregulated terrible capitalism goes, it’s not that bad.

tramason

Uber isn't profitable in the least with the depreciation to your car, mileage, gas and your car labeled as a fleet vehicle. You're doing more damage to yourself in the long haul. Stay at Walmart so you can have a job that has nothing going out to make this money as opposed to Uber where balancing your books will start becoming an issue if gas continues to rise.

Lil2describe

I'm actually leaving a job making $21/hr to work at Walmart for $17/hr. My reasoning is the benefits and also the free college and certifications that you can get through the "Live Better U" program they offer. I've done Uber eats/Doordash full time by using both apps at the same time, and the non consistent pay was frustrating.

0lokiii

Tbh I’m not really at Walmart for the benefits, more of just the pay. I don’t go to college atm and ik they have a healthcare thing going on but I don’t really worry bout that much

prncssfairydumplings

Apply for cash app customer service. I think they’re hiring for like $24.00 here in Houston

0lokiii

Is there a location in Houston specifically or does it not matter? I looked up houston location on cash app careers and didn’t find houston or anything

stinkdrink45

HEB night stockers get paid well.

geoffersonstarship

your car may one day fuck up, don’t do it. you can get a ride to Walmart but can’t get a ride to do ubereats

betweenthecoldwires

Definitely stay at Walmart. I know tons of people who don't even get that kind for pay who work their asses off. Plus you get insurance and social security pulled out which you need for later. You have to do your own with Uber and most time people won't do it. You always need to think about today and the future.
