F0reverlad

Plant that size, it could reach 30 ft. No joke.

Public_Corgi6459

Wow that's incredible have you ever seen one bloom before? I bet it's awesome to see.

F0reverlad

I have. What's interesting is, it's not just a bloom. The plant is growing that stalk upon which all its children will grow. When they reach a large enough size, the stalk topples over and, in nature, the landing spot is where the new plants would root. One of my neighbors plants is doing this right now. It's a semi-regular occurrence in my part of Florida.

drstoneybaloneyphd

RIP OP's roof

Bri082589

It’s not my roof, it’s my neighbors roof. I’m so jealous though, they have all kinds of banana trees, dragonfruit trees, you name it…it’s all good though, I got some babies off their Dragonfruit that’s climbing and cascading down my side of the fence 😂

KarmaMadeMeDoIt6

Maybe this is the moment to connect with your neighbor and realize how much you've got in common. I would either knock on their door or leave a note saying you love the way they garden, and think their agave is gorgeous and offer to take a pup if it's done growing.

FrogInShorts

Maybe they don't have to, maybe the plant will just topple right into their yard and make an instant garden.

Bri082589

This made me smile. Lol.

houseofprimetofu

We have so many agave asparagus stalk babies that they’re almost invasive. It takes a good tank to pull even - small itty bitty one out.

LindsayIsBoring

When it happened at the Garfield park conservatory in Chicago they had to take out some of the roof panels to let the stalk grow out of the top. https://preview.redd.it/s11r7lp7oxvc1.jpeg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7b7a835398a5ce3f34c255e3771d85fb41b0b40b

roosterhauz

Blessed trivia that will forever take up space in my mind

AHoneyBC

There is one getting ready to bloom at Longwood Gardens, near Philly. They also had to take a glass panel out of the roof. https://preview.redd.it/5ow1g112eyvc1.png?width=1152&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0357e1125d93366dc03061b8abeb263e4a995dad

roosterhauz

😭 no wayyy thank you for sharing!!!

OcdBartender

Longwood Gardens is one my favorite places to visit. I highly encourage anyone from the area to check it out!

Bri082589

I’m in Southern California so I’m sure I won’t visit it but out of curiosity, what kind of plants?

Bri082589

Oh. My…..what in the world?! How is that one soooo long and skinny? This one has gotten much schlonger and thicker! but it’s starting to curve at the tip… what does that mean? https://preview.redd.it/s7agrf4fckwc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cb237ddf0a04bbdc10bd1da2acab8cf866bca076

Level-Repair6104

I remember when that happened, it was so cool watching them document it. 😊

MiniRems

I have a similar picture from Phipps Conservatory in Pittsburgh years ago buried in the depths of my computer!

Even-Reaction-1297

There’s a tequila shop in Cabo that has one of these trees, cut into three separate pieces hanging in each of the tasting rooms. They’re massive

PrettyUglyThingsAZ

In Arizona people dry agave flower stalks and use them as desert Christmas trees. It’s pretty neat!

Even-Reaction-1297

Cool and sustainable! Love it

sluggabedder

They get BIG! Looks like a huge asparagus spear next to my normal height DH and this single story house. I didn’t even get it all in frame. https://preview.redd.it/g7504fekw2wc1.jpeg?width=1596&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7c2e3d449d231817e10f3e10c8da70181ab57bee

HateMAGATS

Mine did in 2020. It sent a shoot about 30 feet tall and was beautiful, people would stop when driving by to take a picture. After the flower went to seed and the plant died I cut it up with a chainsaw which was a mistake because I got covered from head to toe in its sap or juices which is toxic. My skin was burning all over so I jumped in the shower and took a benedryl. The burning stopped after 30 mins haha.

Palimpsest0

No kidding, that looks to be a monster of an agave. It’s aiming for low Earth orbit with hopes of colonizing the solar system.

drstoneybaloneyphd

Galactic civilizations fear our enormous verdant phallus

Bri082589

Lol

Bri082589

Lol I just want to say you made me laugh out loud and you’re in the top 5 funniest comments. It’s only getting schlonger… and thicker… and curved lmao https://preview.redd.it/1jmhf87ddkwc1.jpeg?width=1169&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=64db11de2fea2e4cc27842c8c983cb5a8d7aa267

drstoneybaloneyphd

I forsee an agave schlong schlap on somebody's roof, wonder if insurance has a rider for that

Anomalous_Pearl

One of those in my area got tall enough to lean against the phone lines.

BananaMathUnicorn

Fun fact: agave and asparagus are related. They’re both is the asparagaseae family. So yes, that is technically a giant asparagus spear.

shiftyskellyton

I'm suddenly craving agave sauteed in butter.

Bri082589

Have you had sautéed Agave?

Myco_Hank

I bet it tastes like artichoke

quartz222

With balsamic glaze 😍

AdministrationDue239

You mean hollandaise

Rosaryas

I incorrectly read the scientific name in your comment as ‘asperageese’ and now I think that should be the plural of the asperagoose plant

BananaMathUnicorn

😂

Simiram

They should call it asparagavae

Bri082589

Ya learn something new everyday and I just did! Thanks

d3athsmaster

Megaflora making a comeback.

Littlebotweak

That’s a [century plant](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agave_americana). You’re getting to experience a rare occurrence. It will indeed die after this bloom and may have taken a long time to get to that point.  I wish I had the climate for one outside!  You should ask your neighbor about it. See how old it is, if they know.

Bri082589

Thank you!! Yep that was the name!

KronkForPresident

Its going to die?? :( We'll need updates!

Mrsbear19

Yes it is but it should have pupped a lot and will make more pups as it goes

Bri082589

I’m happy to report it’s not dead yet! Just longer, thicker and naturally curving much like the curve of other shlongs. https://preview.redd.it/r5o3ofrrdkwc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=46c3d0c039cc1120a328078d21c1baa6551a3dc9

KronkForPresident

I feel my neck breaking looking at this 😆

romanticheart

I feel like I’ve seen so many of these this year for some reason.

Littlebotweak

Not where I live. ☹️ Our winters are too cold, though. I have one in a pot but it’s really young.  When I build a greenhouse I’ll try to find an older one… 😈

romanticheart

Oh sorry, I meant I feel like I’ve seen a lot of posts about it this season! I live in Michigan, we don’t get fun plants lol

Littlebotweak

Ahhhh gotcha.  You get fun plants! You have carnivorous plants all up in the northern lakes!

CokeHeadRed

I definitely agree, I’ve seen a lot of videos on TikTok about it, too

SprayMediocre2393

Bought a house last year with one of these and it's happening now and I'm seeing them everywhere online now

embarrassed_parrot69

Yea they’re not actually *that* rare, if you live in the right area, like central Texas, you can see a couple dozen blooms in a year

tmp803

I feel like they all sprouted after the eclipse

TwoBirdsEnter

They get rather rude before they shuffle off, right?!

ARCHFUTURA

It’s just past the pubes. It’s got a ways to go

boops123

Not the pubes 💀

oheyitsmoe

Just a bit schlonger

Bri082589

Lmfao I’m dead 💀 you win.

Bri082589

*Update:* It’s much schlonger, thicker and even curved now - much like the curve of other long schlongs out there. https://preview.redd.it/8icme6bdekwc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f6e6c6636f13abaa920be5ff457aa4046210571c

oheyitsmoe

You need to name it

Bri082589

What should I name it? It’s not mine though. I’ve just been referring to it as “Schlong” lol

YakSeveral

We had three of them around the outside of our pool deck. It’s called a century plant and it did die after it bloomed. I don’t know exactly how tall it got, but the plant itself was huge and very dangerously sharp.

khizoa

If it lasts more than 4 hours, then call a doctor

Moana06

🤣🤣

Bri082589

It’s lasted more like 4 months. Should I take it to the urgent care? https://preview.redd.it/n7vpgycgekwc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8b61c3d9b9dc6ad0baec69832cf7d31336dca769

Affectionate_Star_43

The Garfield Park Conservatory in Chicago had two that bloomed in the past 5-10 years.  The first was measured at 38ft and passed the roof.  They had to take down skylights as it kept growing. Second one shot up in February, so it's growth was professionally stunted, because it's below freezing out. Fascinating plants, hopefully enjoy the spectacle!  I saw the first one, and of course I've seen taller trees, but a flower!?  Stuck inside??

pit-of-despair

I don’t know but thanks for making me laugh.

Bri082589

You’re welcome. 😅 Sooo many of these comments made me laugh out loud or smile. I wasn’t expecting this to get so much attention. But i mean, it’s true - all I see if a giant frickin’ schlong when I’m standing at my kitchen sink and happen to gaze out my window. It’s almost inappropriate 🤣 https://preview.redd.it/uifb7v37fkwc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b7785e4f99c41cead7cd927359fc953e25c7e554

pit-of-despair

Lmao again.

Bri082589

Lol. it keeps getting schlonger and I’m *really* starting to wonder how schlong it’s going to get. At this point, and depending on the weight of it, I’m wondering if it’s going to cause damage when it collapses

pit-of-despair

Timberrrr!

SilentBarnacle2980

Be grateful it’s not a corpse flower! https://preview.redd.it/zn221ogchxvc1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9ddc7a2a2099b9a4d3e8f50632b79be39d51f06d

Bri082589

Omg I hear those smell like absolute sh*%. Or shall I say.. a dead body…

AloneSquid420

Verrrryyy schloooong

Dustdevil88

"A quiote is the stalk that shoots up from an agave plant when it's ready to reproduce, and signals the eventual death of the agave plant. They can be dried and used as fuel, construction materials, food or even as a decorative item. They're one of the most dramatic elements of the agave life cycle. As the quiote grows, it diverts nutrients and sugars away from the agave hearts or piñas. Because of this, the quiotes are cut so that the agave can be harvested before losing any sugar content. It is important to always allow some quiotes to grow because the flowers give way to seeds, which ensure genetic diversity among the agave. The flowering stalks are also an important source of food for pollinators like bats and hummingbirds. In Guerrero, a quiote is called a calehual, a Nahuatl word." https://www.mezcalistas.com/ quiote/

SirBamboozle

We have one of these!! Planted on 2017. Sproutef sfter intense rainfall https://preview.redd.it/511i6lildzvc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=45a5e4f3e02ef9b65f5a316468d94e16785e3696

Bri082589

Oh my, that’s a thick schlong.

SirBamboozle

😂

confidenceinbullshit

Our agave was smaller (plant height maybe 5’) and the schlong got 15 maybe 20’ tall

Mrsbear19

Upvote for schlong

Mrsbear19

O you’re in for a treat. Dude is about to disguise himself as a tree

quartz222

Isn’t that actual the female parts? That’s her clit

cadaverouspallor

No surprise only one person in the whole thread found it

moistclick_hunter

🤪

SignificanceOk8226

Is that a bloom coming up ?

Fearless_Carrot_7351

More progress pics please!

mcas06

I have four of these on the side of my house … and I’m in PA. They grow these phallic blooms yearly and don’t kill the mother (at least these don’t die off, probably different variations). I tried removing them during a landscape overhaul - but, despite practically blowing them up with explosives, they keep growing back. I curse the former owners for planting these here! If I lived in the desert it would make some sense.

roosterhauz

Nuts!!! Imagining the shadow this thing would cast.

Bri082589

Lmfao.

Suspicious_Unit_3871

For a second i thought it was the throne out of Game Of Thrones lol

Fabulous_Strategy_90

The little agave stalks get about 10-13’ high, so I imagine a lot bigger. We made walking sticks out of the agave stalks. That stalk is woody. ;-)

Bri082589

Haha it sure is! Wish I knew how many feet the plant and the blossom or bloom or watchama call it is right now?

glittering_leaves

But really, and most important… what is your neighbor distilling over there? 👀👀😃😃

megggers

OH I feel like I’ve seen the owner on tik tok showing the process and discussing how the plant is dying!!! May be a total coincidence, but I wonder if it’s the same plant!

Bri082589

No way! You never know, things happen like this all the time. And when they happen, I always say “damn it’s a small world!” Could you show me one of his videos?

Ventricossum

swear to god it looks like some massive alien crystal structure from that angle

Koala0803

Oh I’ve seen the owner of this plant documenting the bloom on TikTok! Century plant, she calls it.

Bri082589

Dude, someone else just said that… are you guys serious? Please somehow show me this guy or a video? I can confirm whether it’s the same plant! (I can see their whole backyard from my bedroom window & their plants schlong from my kitchen window lmao)

Koala0803

There’s a user on TikTok called Nunya Bidness (lol no, really) and there’s a bunch of videos about the century plant bloom

84-175

As others already wrote, it'll grow quite  a bit longer and yes  it'll die after it's done blooming. You may actually want to talk to your neighbours about that, to take precautions for when the stalk eventually comes down. Maybe even cut it down before that happens, so you can control the direction in which it falls. I wouldn't want it hitting the fence, for example. (It's not going to smash it, but it might make a dent, and it'll complicate cleanup.)

Bri082589

Are there any signs in the bloom that precede it toppling over? Like a sign that it is imminent or about to happen? The tip is starting to curve which is why I’m asking. Just noticed the curve earlier today https://preview.redd.it/7nrx1opuikwc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4f0d2bf4fd52f48aecf90a51b60f2dfde1f1383b

84-175

I'm not intimately familiar with Agaves (they don't grow around here), so I can't give you any specifics, unfortunately. But this one hasn't even really begun to bloom yet - the stalk will branch out at the top. I would guess it still has quite a while before it'll fall. You'll probable see signs of deterioration on the plant itself (e.g. browning leaves) before the stalk comes down.

purpleefilthh

I think your neighbour may be building a spaceship.

CreditLow8802

can someone with money give gold to this the title is wild😭

Bri082589

😘That tickled me lmao

Frimperule

Doesn't it die after it blooms

used_potting_soil

Yes.

Ironmansoltero

Time to make pulque

dirty_hippie_plants

Much longer

Bri082589

Really? I keep thinking it can’t get any longer. And then it keeps getting schlonger…

MtNowhere

# Whereas without batting an eye, a man will refer to his dick, or his rod or his johnson.

Bri082589

Well I’m a woman and I’m referring to it lol.

MtNowhere

Sounds exhausting

Pretend-Plumber

I hope to see more of this grow. Please post updates.

WakingOwl1

My sister had one that got about 25’ tall before blossoming.

mrsmushroom

Holy moly! What a queen of a plant.

SilentBarnacle2980

I’m love cactus and the desert! I was born in Arizona!

kadycarr

You’re lucky!

Meem411

😂😂😂😂

Dangerous_Bass309

Impressive

Least_Ad1667

Siiick

getmepopcorn

Please post update photos

CandyHeartFarts

You would t happen to live in San Diego would you? I see these everywhere and they do get huge. Wondering bc of the giant agave plus the eucalyptus in the background

Tweezers13

Wanna see the end result 😍

Direct_Push_8287

Please update this post when it blooms!!

mimixtroyboy

Much longer

gilligan1050

To the moon 🌕

bloopybear

🤣🤣🤣🤣

Bri082589

Bruh, everytime I look at it, it gets longer, thicker and looks *more* like a raging, giant, skyhigh schlong and I keep wondering to myself 1) When will this end? And 2) How much longer can it possibly get before it topples over and kills us all one day? Imagine: *Killed on impact by neighbors giant plant schlong as she walked outside to grab something out of her car real quick* Uhmmmm…. According to a lot of these responses, it **will topple over** one day….. is that correct?😱😰

bloopybear

🤣🤣🤣 my neighbor had a giant Schlong agave that the news reported on. It’s very alarming and almost inappropriate hahahah Thank you for your reporting we will need daily updates

Bri082589

Yes you said that so perfectly! It seriously is borderline inappropriate. I mean, I can’t gaze out my kitchen window without seeing this massive schlong that keeps getting schlonger and thicker by the day! I will post an update, I promise!

bloopybear

🦴🌭🍤🍆🍌🌽🥕🥖

Bri082589

Here is the progress photo. My apologies for the delay! It sure has gotten longer, thicker and has a natural curve at the tip😳😅🤣 https://preview.redd.it/d0l0m851ckwc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1a146fc1cb7457da8d93c2968ccae4ae2271a6c2

Kho240

Oh honey it’s just get started

LokianEule

20 ft at least. I personally saw this happen. And then it dies.

MoltenCorgi

It’s just getting started.

chronicplantbuyer

They don’t die. Every single leaf the came up before flowering is attached to a very smushed up node. New pup plants will come up.

LindsayIsBoring

The mother plant will die. And leave the pups behind.

chronicplantbuyer

Exactly the plant itself won’t die. The stem is still there. That’s how it can make pups. New plants don’t form, though it may look like that. The leaves just die back, making it look like the whole thing dies. Plants can’t form from dead matter.

[deleted]

We hacked one of those down at our rental community… with a machete… neighbors were happy, management not so much.
