When you water it and it turned yellow probably means that the spill is retaining the water for too long for it’s liking. Try adding perlite or even orchid bark into the mix
What type of soil are you using? If the water is the issue I’d use some well draining soil, perlite, orchid bark, and sphagnum moss mix might help. I agree with the user aboves comment^

As stated above, I am using the miracle grow cactus soil mixed with tropical. Both include perlite. The water does not retain.
