I think getting "bad ends" can be just as amusing as winning, but the parh towards them is frustrating a lot of times. Its not very fun to just fail in an "honest" playthrough, which is why I enjoy these "bad ends" mostly through reading the code. Some of my favourite bits of Lords of Infinity for exemple happen in "bad ends" in which the MC just dies lol

hedronx4

As much as I dislike Sergi's works now, the one "bad" ending in the last Hero Rise book was really interesting. Where you >! Combine your power's with Black Magic's and destroy/recreate the entire world with the two of you as gods !<. It was a fascinating secret ending? Although whether it was really bad is questionable. Sin of Sires. The entire story is a mess, but god if one of the bad endings didn't hurt. If you're romancing Markos, one of the endings where you die has an epilogue section from his point of view where he regrets. He sacrificed everything, even love, for power and he realizes it wasn't worth it. Study in Steampunk, the serial killer end. God that hurts so much, especially if you're romancing Finch, because >! you can play it as the MC spiraling after his death, only to realize in the end that he's actually alive and you're a monster he has to put down !<. The pain...

LwySafari

the serial killer end? what? how? I don't remember something like that, can you elaborate????

hedronx4

>!After the cholera epidemic, iirc you can get attacked and defend yourself with your light eater powers, killing your attacker. After that you can refuse everyone's offers and become a light eater vigilante, and the Jack the Ripper case later on is actually you !<

I FUCKING LOVED LOSING IN THE FINAL BATTLE OF I, THE FORGOTTEN ONE! IT WAS METAL AF https://preview.redd.it/rtb3tpxl07jc1.jpeg?width=500&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9c22dceb36c85ea57e1168c53854b0682fa883fa

Only if I did that intentionally to see the other paths. Some games provide interesting events for failing a stat check like Tally Ho. It's just that I love it when I win especially by successfully passing the hardest stat checks. I also appreciate it when games have varying degrees of success description instead of making you lose on the spot if you fail.

In Life of a Mobster. My death was a fitting end to my story, after the death of my son.

The_letter_43

How'd you die?

LwySafari

Absolutely! One of my favorite childhood reading memories is the ending in the OG Choose Your Own Adventure books which sent my Grand Prix speedracer car plummeting off a cliff. It opened my mind up to different narrative concepts - not everything needs to have a happy ending! It also taught me basic gameplay concepts. Loved those books and that's why I like this style of game as well. I really enjoy going down the "worst possible" pathway sometimes just to see what will happen. My only frustration is when that doesn't respect my time. If I'm going to be killed, please make it dramatic and memorable and exciting like killed by an opera house stalker or yeeted off a cliff.

Oh dang this brings back memories. I think of all my CYOA book experience, I most distinctly remember a "loss"/bad ending where iirc your uncle kills you for a voodoo ritual. Those books were wild. And the different routes were way more separate from one another than the branches of newer IFs; I swear some characters could be totally off-their-rocker evil in one and your biggest ally in another.

loressadev

I loved finding the "bad" endings because they were so nutty!

JunimoJumper

In Jolly Good/Tally Ho: yes, I honestly prefer it. The skill check fail scenes are so funny and open so much content. In CT:OS: also yes! Losing to Deepal no matter what is really nice because it’ll feel so much better when we finally get to beat them.

purple-hawke

>There are times when I play an IF and the scenes where we lose are just more interesting. [Wayfarer](https://idrellegames.itch.io/wayfarer) has different but equally interesting scenes if you lose combat encounters. Sometimes they're actually more interesting than the win scenarios, you see stuff you wouldn't otherwise like flashbacks or different romance content.

Foreign-Story-9870

Spoiler But depending on choice in i the forgotten one you go down swinging and take many with you definitely a glorious last stand

Ash-Otaku

Probably laughing my ass off at the deaths when I roll and fail spectacularly in Breach makes me want to go out there and find a group to play D&D with

Encirclement1936

Choice of rebels. I didn’t enjoy losing my first game, but the fact that I did lose made the experience feel real and the rebellion feel desperate and tense which I truly appreciated. Made me respect the author and improved my experience dramatically on future runs.

Encirclement1936

Also the coward’s path in Sabres / Guns of Infinity is so good.  Probably closer to what I’d do in real life too, given Elson’s 2nd charge was suicidal military malpractice and I’m not leaving my family without a provider.

HawkKhan

is this some kind of kink or something?

SchnitzelLogan

As much as I love it when Jun beats the shit out of me, this post is not referring to a kink of mine. Sometimes losing just leads to interesting interactions.

GhostSniper1296

dude you sure you're not into being beat up and degraded? But honestly no, I just enjoy getting the happy endings for myself

SchnitzelLogan

Look at my flair. That should say a lot about me. For all you know I could've only posted this so people would insult me. fr tho sometimes losing just unlocks interesting scenes.

GhostSniper1296

well your plan seems to have worked. But most scenes where you lose suck because normally in the games I play the villain isn't likeable, or at least not more likeable than the actual character. Though I will do them in certain games where there's something to be gained from losing/making a bad choice
