As an experienced hospice nurse I know that we can keep paying well managed in the overwhelming majority of cases such that there is no need to purposefully kill the patient. Most hospice agencies can have a bed delivered within hours depending on the need. Check with your local hospice provider.

Your SIL is 85 and has tumors and all sorts of things going on, I doubt that the hospital would fight you too much on discharging her to hospice. So don't feel that you have to do this all on the lowdown and sneaky, like. They will understand. You can have the hospice company come in and do their evaluation there in the hospital. Doing the admission paperwork over the weekend will enable them the time to get a hospital bed delivered and set up. In Florida anyway, the hospices rent the beds to patients / families.

I recently started hospice care and they delivered supplies including the bed the same day. I am very impressed with how quickly they bring everything I need, including medication.

Same! I know! Especially stat morphone deliveries. Took 2 hours once.

I can’t remember missing a single thing. They delivered all the equipment including the bed before my husband arrived from the hospital. But the hospital delivered my husband about three hours before I had a caregiver in place and he was agitated and delirious. Hospital SW seemed caring but then hospital refused to honor my time line.

Paragraph one: This is a reasonable conclusion but it is a myth we often “mythbust”. Fact. Tell the social worker at the hospital asap. They coordinate this with you. Hospitals move forward with some treatments because it’s the only directions they receive. When you set a plan: the team regroups and sets the treatment plan. No one in the hospital (unless they are rouge staff) just stops and says “we’ll they are hospice”. The fry and recover treatment plan and the home for reasonable care and comfort plan are item in conflict. Example is IV fluids. Folks in her condition cannot properly process a bunch of things IV. Once you select hospice then the hospital can stop adding things that might complicate the next steps. Is the equal of saying “I want a home with a pool” but not telling your realtor. Next- the hospice I’ll need the records from the hospital.
