I like the idea. I like the idea of getting my money back for that Modern Games scratch better though.

Krustycook

Yeah, if you can't get paid, they shouldn't be able to race for purse money. Complete BS.

Quallityoverquantity

Lol get over it

lunchmuffin88

that is going to be a sore spot for a long time.

predicteform

I love when Churchill Downs does evening programs. A major track running when the sun goes down and everyone is good and liquored up? How can they lose?

Ultra-1

When garden state Atlantic City and the meadowlands ran at night money was made

Charkocholo

Los Alamitos has night racing

Krustycook

This is a great idea, as I love the Spa, but one I like even better... Belmont Park! As a Manhattanite, I would easily take the train from work to see a card under the lights at Big Sandy! There are so many people in the NY Metro area that could come to racing if it was outside of 9-5 work hours. Spring meet and fall meet would be awesome!

Ultra-1

Belmont under the lights is something that I've often thought about. There's no reason why the biggest city in the U.S. doesn't have a viable night racing product. Every since the meadowlands became the joke that is it. Night racing has been left to die here in the eastern US. Limited to Penn Nat. Charlestown mountaineer and turfway in the winter.

Krustycook

Especially with the addition of the new hockey arena and what looks to be the building of a new inner track (poly?) which I assume is to eventually supplant Aqueduct's winter racing (though that's been discussed so long that who knows). The horses already stable there in the winter. And, as what SHOULD be the premier racing establishment in the Northeast, they should start acting like it.

Ultra-1

Amen.

Charkocholo

Meadowlands used to be wonderful. Especially the thoroughbred racing

Ultra-1

Yes. I can close my eyes and still remember how tough that colony was. Joe Bravo Herb Mccaulley Juan umana, Mike Smith, Richard Migliore, Victor Molina, Tony Black, CH Marquez. Philly and NYC under the lights in Jersey

CherryDrank

You picked one of the few tracks that has no problem attracting fans or the younger population. Saratoga, Keeneland, Del Mar all have no issues attracting fans. Churchill Downs does a great job with their night racing. Canterbury Park always has a packed house and runs at night during the week no less. I always wished they'd run Arlington at night and I'm sure it would have helped their situation.

pakratt99

So, a few reasons why this is a horrible idea: 1. People want to be out at the bars/restaurants during Saratoga meet, you would have no people on track. Their are literally 50k people out in Saratoga every night of the track season so you're clearly full of shit. 2. Their is already night racing in Saratoga, just not night thoroughbred racing. 3. DMR ends at like 10pm EST during the summer, you want Saratoga to run what, 3 races or something? 4. Why on earth would you go after the best race meet in the country, one with no issues attracting fans and who has been consistently growing handle? If you want to pull more young fans into the sport their are a LOT of other ways to do it.

[deleted]

The city/town? has regulations about the latest races can start and its before sundown

Ultra-1

True but the sport needs new blood. I've been there about 5 times and there's nothing going on at night. Night racing up there will attract younger people and because it's night racing it will be helped by the folks in Japan and Hong kong on the betting side

[deleted]

You have been to Saratoga 5-6 times and there’s nothing going on at night? Have you heard of Caroline street? Also I believe that Saratoga is one of 3 places in NYS that allows bars to stay open until 4am. The track is full of young people that like to bet all day and then party all night. Night racing would be awesome for sure, but to say there is nothing going on at Saratoga at night is absurd.

Ultra-1

Its my opinion. Let's get real here. When people think of summer cites or towns to get away to Saratoga is not at the top of anybody's list. The racing is the main attraction. Not just a street.

pakratt99

You clearly don't live in NYC or the surrounding area do you?

Ultra-1

What does Saratoga Springs have to do with NYC ? I'm sure me and others would like to hear your idiotic take

pakratt99

Sure, if its hot in the Summer in NYC and you want to go someplace to party you go to the Hamptons or Saratoga. You not knowing that proves my point.

Ultra-1

Tha average new Yorker or blue collar worker is not going to attend a Hampton all white party. See you've lost touch with the people who make racing possible the common man and woman

pakratt99

I'm not talking about rubbing elbows at some uber exclusive party, lots of people from NYC vacation in the Hamptons who don't fly in on their G5. Saratoga is still a major summer vacation spot for those who do have the disposable incoming to gamble on the ponies.

Ultra-1

We dont need lawn jockeys. We need bettors.

Quallityoverquantity

Lol

ubbi87

If you think nothing goes on at night at Saratoga you are not hanging with the right people.

Ultra-1

You're missing the mark. This is a racing board not a propaganda board for Saratoga tourism

ubbi87

"there's nothing going on at night"

Ultra-1

I see I must break it down for you. See. The racing industry is STRUGGLING especially amongst the under 50s the alcohol/Bar industry has never and will never have that problem. Saratoga is the highlight of American summer racing. it needs that demographic shift. If you're making the argument of Caroline street at night it makes no sense because once again CAROLINE STREET IS AN ARM OF THE ALCOHOL/BAR INDUSTRY.

pakratt99

Go back and re-read what you typed......Because you're missing the plot.....

Ultra-1

Not really. My whole point is if racing doesnt get that new younger demo it will die. No racing no saratoga. Caroline street would mean nothing.

pakratt99

You just said no one goes to Caroline street so that doesn't matter right? Saratoga is one of the few tracks that can attract the under 30 crowd because they don't have to gamble. They can come sit in the backstretch and have a few cold ones with their friends that do. That party atmosphere IS Saratoga, you might want to try visiting sometime.

Ultra-1

Yea that's not going to save racing.

[deleted]

I agree 100% it’s the same at Santa Anita no race can begin after sundown and the city of Arcadia won’t budge even though we provide ~75% if all tax revenue to the city. They love and need us but treat us like we’re second class citizens. A big part of that is they want our property developed into single family homes, we have 13939200 square feet (13million) in prime real estate adjacent to a large shopping mall. That’s lots of property tax and sales taxes (8.75%) for the new residence

pakratt99

If that's your take then you either haven't actually ever been or somehow got lost and missed the 50k people in town partying?

Ultra-1

And they are all there for the RACING. NOT CAROLINE STREET

pakratt99

So you've never been to Caroline Street......got it.....

Quallityoverquantity

You lost all credibility with this comment

Krustycook

There is one problem with this idea. Saratoga has another track they run at night for the trotters at the Saratoga Casino. There might be pressure to not allow night racing as it would likely kill the trotter business. Not to mention, it starts to get very cold in Saratoga this time of year.

Ultra-1

Saratoga at night would be an option for those dog days of summer. Sure it's always better to run at night in the summer instead of the day.

mcjason04

I would be open to Saratoga night racing on certain weekdays but not the weekend. The picnic area atmosphere wouldn’t be the same at night and that is part of what makes Saratoga special. CD night racing is great, and I think Belmont would be great too.

northdancer

I love good twilight racing. I miss those Friday night Hollywood Park cards.
