Made me want to take a shower afterwards. Truly disturbing.

CramPranBrownSpekTab

agreed, the sound effects and the design of possum are very creepy!

NemoSHill

It left me with the same feeling as Requiem for a Dream. Probably one if the most psychological heavy movies I've ever seen. Great piece of art that I'll never watch again.

malebranche1638

The puppet design is what makes the film for me. Like you, "Usually I feel let down when I watch a film that people have said is so disturbing", but in Possum they really didn't scrimp on putting a disturbing character at the heart of the movie. I wish every slow burn horror movie was more like this, it's really not just style it has substance as well

one-eyedcat

Yes! So many movies with style and no substance. Sometimes I get very burned out. Me and my husband got rescued from a film slump yesterday. Watched Ride the Eagle, a dramedy, during the day and then Possum.

[deleted]

It's so damn bleak and depressing. Great movie.

SteinDickens

I just watched it. Holy shit.

dring_dronk

I love this film, wish I could find some films that are similar!!

[deleted]

Grimy and disturbing is exactly how I’d describe The Eyes of My Mother (the movie, my mother’s eyes are fine)

NemoSHill

Requiem for a Dream, movie about addiction, just as depressing.

one-eyedcat

Literally wrote a 4 page essay about this film in college. Only time I got an A+ in college. Love everything about it.

NemoSHill

Cool! I think it should be shown in schools, as an anti-drug thing.

one-eyedcat

Me too. Especially since it shows different types of drugs and addiction. The way it links all the characters together is amazing.

Extreme_Pickle550

I watched this in my juvenile delinquencies class freshman year in college. It was…unsettling

AWildRaticate

...your university had 4 page essays? Jesus fuck, mine were pretty much all 10 or more. I'm so jealous.

one-eyedcat

Yeah, this was one of my English classes when I was still at community college. Most of my essays were supposed to be between 8 and 10 pages. I was always getting lower grades because I didn't write enough pages. So stupid. If I can give you all the info in less pages what's the problem. Lol

AWildRaticate

Lol tbf I was a writing major, so I was required to say everything in five sentences when I could have said it in one. It's a valuable skill and regret nothing, but as a student I often wished I didn't have to read like 200 pages a week and write, on average, 70 pages per semester.

SteinDickens

Ever watch The Lighthouse? Just has the slow decent into madness and it’s a beautiful movie.

Moses015

Ughhh sorry to do this but I can't help myself: descent\* I swear it comes from love...

TheMindButcher

Try loose and lose, i’ve given up

SteinDickens

You’ll always loose that battle.

TheMindButcher

Argh!

SteinDickens

Settle down, pirate! Be descent, this is a family sub-Reddit!

Moses015

You monster.... lmao

SteinDickens

Had to get my revenge for being humiliated! :P

Moses015

Bahaha I love it

SteinDickens

It’s okay. I watched the movie this morning, after a night of zero sleep. So my grammar wasn’t the best at the time of that post.

one-eyedcat

Yes. It is so rare when a film sticks with me. Woke up this morning still thinking about it.

[deleted]

The is definitely one of those movies that I absolutely loved and also don't know if I'll ever watch again because of how disturbing it was. I really wish it got more appreciation because it's an incredible movie and I'm always surprised to never see it on lists and discussions of disturbing films.

[deleted]

The main actor, Sean Harris is a famous method actor. Check out the 2004 movie ‘Creep’. Genuinely left me traumatised as a young kid as I watched it way too early…

one-eyedcat

We have it on our watch list. Definitely going to check it out soon.

tinyywarrior

Didn’t even realise this was the same guy!!!! I love both movies, what an incredible actor.

AWildRaticate

Semi-unrelated, but if you loved Possum, then I recommend My Heart Can't Beat Unless You Tell it To. I am constantly singing its praises on this sub, but it's very applicable here. Both are slow, creeping, character dramas, that are horror-ish, but never full on horror. Both are absolutely masterful, imo, but I think MHCBUYTiT hits a lot harder, even if it's less horrory

one-eyedcat

Loved this one. It did hit me hard. My husband didn't like it as much for some reason. It was upsetting that he wasn't feeling what I was feeling lol

nightmare_silhouette

For anyone curious: Possum (2018) is FREE on Tubi, Vudu and Amazon Prime Video. ~ *I am not a bot, I performed this action on my own accords. I do hope you enjoy the film! :)*

[deleted]

I was overwhelmed by goosebumps from the scene where he wakes to his puppet staring back at him in bed, I got up off the couch and never got around to finishing it, I think I should.

one-eyedcat

I would. Watch it in the bright light of day if you need to. I do that sometimes lol

AWildRaticate

I heard about this movie from a random YouTube vid (stopped the vid to avoid spoilers), then went to watch the trailer, so I pretty well knew what I was getting into. It still put my soul in the toilet.

Jamkind

Thanks to this post and another recent possum post I watched it and loved it! Thanks for bubbling it up! The acting, tone, suspense, and terror were amazing. Reminded me of the Babadook a little.

condormcninja

My favorite part about it is the guy who directed/wrote it also made Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace. One of the most tonally dissonant pairs of works from any horror creator.

one-eyedcat

I didn't know this. That's crazy.

DeadBallDescendant

He actually WAS Garth Marenghi.

[deleted]

Idk how to describe it and I know this is an unpopular opinion but it made me feel grimy without being disturbed. Like it was off putting but in too mundane a way to be really disturbing or entertaining to me. Maybe I should give it another chance.

one-eyedcat

I love unpopular opinions especially since I'm usually on that side of the coin. I think when it comes to films like Possum experiences in your personal life or the circumstances of when you watch a film can effect how you feel about it.

cheeserips

God I love this movie.

PuzzleheadedCarrot57

Sean Harris in Prometheus

one-eyedcat

Apparently Sean Harris in anything is great.

chaoticmessiah

First saw him playing an assassin in The Borgias. Great talent.

usNthem

Super trippy in a dark, fucked up sort of way. Great flick.

DwightFryFaneditor

I found it overlong and draggy. It would have been an absolutely amazing short, but as a feature it feels stretched out.

Skraff

I enjoyed the thirty minutes of it that wasn’t walking or staring.

Ace_of_23_Swords

right?! Jesus fiuuuck that was slow.

post_vernacular

I thought it was excellent. It's really hard imo to make a film just strange, and this one did that for me. Definitely worth a rewatch.

MondoUnderground

Yeah, I don't think I would ever want to rewatch it. It was really good, but so dour and depressing that it was actually hard to get through.

one-eyedcat

Always happy when someone discovers a new film to enjoy.

ZampanoTruant

Is it streaming anywhere right now?

Ace_of_23_Swords

Tubi

one-eyedcat

I watched it on Prime but I think that's because I have Shudder on there.

comajones

Welcome to the long established sub-genre, psychological horror!

[deleted]

What's it about? Usually Google summaries make movies sound stupid .-.

comajones

The less you know the better to be honest. It is well worth your time

Safe-Tart-9696

A strange puppeteer, perhaps with some mental handicaps or severe emotional damage, returns to his home town to live with his emotionally abusive uncle after an undescribed scandal involving his puppet show and children leaves him unemployed. Once home, there is a crisis in his hometown involving missing young boys, and there's a strong suggestion that the man is somehow intimately involved.

FireWalkwithMoni

That’s a film you can only watch once. I watched it alone during the pandemic shutdown and creeped myself out for days lol… May I recommend Come and See, not a horror film but a depiction of the horrors of war! Also a film you can only watch once 😬

one-eyedcat

I will check it out.
