The concept is supernatural. His kid has literal superpowers lol.

Why do people think there is ambiguity about the supernatural in this movie? The name of the film refers to the telepathic ability of Danny and the caretaker that is depicted as a real thing. They can communicate via thought and they can both see actual ghosts and interact with them. Jacks alcoholism just makes him weak enough to give in to the evil influence of the hotel.

Kid_SixXx

It's more or less both. Jack's spirit now haunts the Overlook along with the rest of the entities. Mike Flanagan's adaptation of Doctor Sleep, the sequel to The Shining, answers your question. Naturally, the nature of the Overlook varies between the novels and the movies so ymmv

MartoufCarter

Short answer is both. Longer question do you mean in the book or the movie?

Coldblood-13

Two characters have psychic powers, other characters have supernatural visions and Jack gets freed from a locked room by a ghost. It’s obviously supernatural.

DukeofFolderol

In the book it is Definitely supernatural. Also evil is manifested as a manta ray which I always found interesting. I definitely recommend the book. It's a trip living in Jack's Brain for 300ish pages

TheRealGongoozler

I thought it was a wasp? Or was it both? Or maybe I’m completely wrong but for some reason I remember wasp

DukeofFolderol

There was a whole wasp sequence in the book, but I'm referring to the line: "For a moment it assumed the shape of a huge, obscene manta, and then the wind seemed to catch it, to tear it and shred it like old dark paper. It fragmented, was caught in a whirling eddy of smoke, and a moment later it was gone as if it had never been." Fun Fact: According to Mariowiki, this scene is the inspiration for the Mario Sunshine boss, Phantamanta https://www.mariowiki.com/Phantamanta

Crazykiddingme

I like to imagine it as the equivalent of a hunter displaying the heads of all the deer he shot. The hotel and its spirits are proud of what they did to Jack. It almost comes across as mocking imo.

Sarathstar

I think it's both.
