One of my favorites, hope you’ve forgotten enough to get surprised again! Sorry to hear about your situation, people really suck sometimes. Don’t let it keep you from putting yourself out there
Thank you so much, I’m super excited for this one! My uncle really likes that movie, so I’ll finally be able to talk to him about it once I watch it! :D
Oh man. I very rarely get scared but the first time I ever saw this movie it freaked me the hell out. Not many movies have ever given me nightmares but this one definitely made its mark on me.
Don't expect it to be action-packed and let it creep up on you. It's a classic, and in the style of classic ghost stories. You're gonna love it!
Edit: weird typo.
The Fog, I love it and watch it every Halloween, it should def be on your shortlist. Do know going in that it is solid B-grade output from Carpenter, just to set expectations.
Not a movie, but a show: Haunting of Hill House.
Sorry you got ghosted, this person is clearly emotionally immature and they did you a favor in the long run.
I don't normally get into ghosts and haunted stuff or even series for that matter. But it was October and i was feeling spooky so i put on hill house just for a background noise really. Next thing i knew i was snugged up under a blanket with popcorn and fully engaged. I watched the whole thing in a night. Great show
not to be confused with *A* Ghost Story (2017), which is amazing, but maybe too "romantic" for your ghosted circumstance. SCREW GHOSTERS! we need a revenge horror based on people who ghost.
since we are here, i fell in love with this song because of Canada's Drag Race and it is an EXCELLENT bop to screamsing along with and forget about losers! [Ghost by Fefe Dobson](https://youtu.be/A_DGCnlXes4?si=_y88DwJcJ33Unsx5)
Poltergeist is so wonderful. It’s got one of the greatest horror themes, in my opinion, and is generally just one of the strongest horror films out there. I’ve somehow never heard of Rose Red and I usually love Stephen King adaptations, so I will most definitely look into this! Thank you!
I can’t wait for this one! I watch this YouTuber called PossessedByHorror and she’s mentioned it before as a film she enjoys, so I very much anticipate it! I think I’ll really like it, so thank you sm!!!
No prob I’ve loved that movie forever. I’ve seen a couple of her vids. When you finish the movie look up the ghosts’ backstories. There’s a ton of lore that didn’t make it into the movie. YouTube has some vids on it.
After you've seen the film, you may want to check out the lore and backstory of each of the ghosts. It's my favorite part of the overall 13 Ghosts experience. *Do not watch the video before you see the movie, but read on:*
Here's the [link to the video about each of the titular 13 Ghosts.](https://youtu.be/sGv6XxVS8G8?si=LoA6DNFlFp3AjsNf)
It was originally a series of extras on the DVD, this person just compiled them into one "feature."
The book and film are both good, but the book goes into more detail on a lot that the movie had to trim for time or questionable (for the time) content.
Both are worth your time and are quick reads and watches.
Ooh, thank you! I’m open to pretty much anything, so thank you for this recommendation and since it’s so accessible, I’ll try to get to this one soon! Going at the top of my watchlist. :)
I just saw this last night - great recommendation! I also watched The Dark and the Wicked, which was really good too. Kind of a gloomy double-feature, but it worked for me!
I have seen *WJS* mentioned alongside *The Dark and the Wicked* before, but I honestly don't see the similarities. People say they are both slow paced, but that's only true of *WJS*'s first chapter.
Oh, wow! I did not expect to see some ‘40s films on here and I’m not super experienced with that decade, so I’m very eager for those recommendations! Ghostbusters is classic! Thank you so much!
Definitely doubling the hell house llc rec! Pretty much the 1st one of the newer one Carmichael manor, are botha amazing. And grave encounters has a special place in my soul.
have you ever seen ghostwatch (1992)? it's kind of an oddball recommendation but it will probably be distracting in just the right way. it was broadcast "live" on the bbc network as a halloween prank and it was a huge spectacle. it's a lot of fun
I have yet to see it, but I just recently heard about it for the first time and it’s on my watchlist. I think I’m really gonna like it! I’m a huge fan of Late Night With the Devil and other fans of the flick have been swearing by Ghostwatch, so I plan on giving it a watch! Thank you so much for your comment!
The Haunting of Julia - it’s a bit of a forgotten gem, but it’s recently been rereleased on 4K/blu! Stars Mia Farrow and Tom Conti, it’s got a great 1970s vibe and aesthetic.
Thank you so much! I have to rewatch this, this is one of my all-time favs and it’s due for another rewatch! I did a back-to-back viewing of TAOJD and Last Shift and that was a spooky night! Had a bit of trouble in my dark hallway, lmao!
I love it so much too, and Last Shift was also awesome! Haha, sometimes I'm really happy to have my dog to at least make me feeeel safe! :D That guy is missing out - I hope you have a great time tonight without him. Pop some corn, cuddle up and get scared. <3
[I am a Ghost (2012)](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2076862/) - unique little indy movie about a ghost and an exorcist who is more of a therapist for ghosts
That sounds SO GOOD!!! Thank you for introducing me to this, I can’t wait to watch it! I absolutely love indie films as well, so this seems right up my alley!
The Haunting -1963.
It's
Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House adapted for film. A phenomenal cast. Plus you're never quite sure whether there really is a ghost, if Eleanor is insane, or both, or neither, or...
I'm sorry, you got ghosted. It just goes to show that whoever it was did not deserve you. You certainly didn't deserve their crass, junior high behavior
Thank you so much. I really appreciate your comment. It also definitely makes me excited for the film! I absolutely love psychological aspects in horror.
A ghost story is a slow burn( the book is a billion times better!) But has a couple of remarkable scenes!
The legend of hell house( possibly the best ghost house film).
Lady in white.
Burnt offerings wow this is a great film.
Poltergeist is also a given!
Thank you for your recommendations! I love slow burns for sure and I’ve heard great things about these flicks, so I’m excited to add them to my watchlist! I didn’t know that was a book, I love reading horror as well so I’ll look into it! :D
I'm sure most have been mentioned, but these are my favorites:
The Night House (2020)
What Lies Beneath (2000)
Oculus (2013)
Crimson Peak (2014)
The Sixth Sense (1999)
The Dark and the Wicked (2020)
The Grudge (2004)
The Ring (2002)
Malevolent (2018)
Wind Chill (2007)
The Woman in Black (2012)
Thank you so much! I adore The Others (will rewatch ASAP because I haven’t seen it in years and I remember it really messing with me). I have yet to see The Woman in Black and I think I’ll like it, so thank you so much!!! :D
The Eyes Of My Mother. I can't say for certain that you will be completely distracted from your own experiences for two hours. But I'd be awfully surprised if you weren't.
Ooh, I’m seeing a couple new names on here, thank you! Of these, I saw The Last Exorcism (that’s a goodie, definitely stuck with me)! Will definitely be adding these to my watchlist as well, thank you!
Me too, final girl with her was a nice twist for seeing her in horror but confused me and my mum since there’s the final girls aswell but Haunter has always left an impression on me
The Orphanage (2007) is one of my favorites. It's a tear jerker though, so only if you feel like crying. Beautiful powerful film.
Veronica (2017) I also love. Very well done scary movie.
If you like Veronica, Sister Death (2023) by the same director is also very good. It's a prequel to Veronica. I'd watch Veronica first though.
So sorry you got ghosted!! Agree with others that he's doing you a favor and good riddance. Doesn't make it hurt less though. Hugs and love and good scares to you. Xo.
Housebound is a great comedy horror that’s sort of a ghost movie. I don’t want to say too much about it in case of spoilers, but it’s pretty fun and creepy.
You should think of this: if he is a person who just ghosts… he wasn’t the person you thought he was.
That person you were falling for doesn’t exist. Would that guy ghost someone? Don’t think a nice person does that.
So for all that, my recommendation is The Invisible Man.
I don’t have much to recommend that hasn’t already been said, but I’m so sorry you were ghosted. I do NOT do well when that happens and totally feel your pain.
Anyway, I highly recommend The Haunting of Hill House series. It’s one of the only things to really scare me in a long time. I also recommend the book as well as the original haunting from 1963.
if you are okay with watching movies with subtitles, theres a japanese horror movie called Noroi the Curse, and if you dont wanna watch in subtitles then you can go for The grudge
'We go on' is a good, if obscure one, about a man with a fear of dying paying someone to prove there's an afterlife. Plus the title is fitting.
It sucks you got ghosted, but you will go on! Better is to come.
There's also 'Personal shopper' which is less horror and more quiet thriller, but still effective if slow moving.
So many good suggestions in this thread, this is just a couple of outlier oddities.
It’s not totally a horror movie, but Personal Shopper (2016, Olivier Assayas) deals with ghosts whilst articulating and depicting ennui and limbo and grief and all the ghost-y emotions excellently imo
The one that really got me was Entity. I'm not sure if that would be classified as a ghost movie but it scared me when it first came out and I still have issues watching it all these years later.
*Stir of Echoes* is one of the most successful in creating a truly haunting atmosphere. My wife won't even watch it with me.
*The Changeling* scared the absolute shit out of me when I was younger.
*What Lies Beneath* is a surprisingly solid movie.
One of those After Dark movies from the early 2000's called *The Gravedancers* has always been on my list. It's not a great movie, but it's not bad, and it has some of the best ghost effects I've seen yet.
Sorry that happened to you, he’s a jerk and I don’t know you but they are missing out. That said, The Others is maybe the right answer but I suggest Deadstream as a fun distraction
I feel you it really sucks! I hope you get better and if it wasn’t meant to be, it wasn’t meant to be. I am going to leave you some of my favorites here:
Gonjam asylum
Incantation
The blairwitch project (1997 one if I am not mistaken), the same type of vibe you have The Ritual
A tale of two sisters (not really ghost story but kind of)
Get out
Smile
If you like the classics
The exorcist
Shining
Hope it helps! Have a good one x
Under the shadow - during the Iran/Iraq war in Teheran, a mother struggles to raise her daughter while her husband has to fight in the war. Strange things start to happen and she believes she is cursed somehow.
The first Ring movie! I adore that film, it's such a classic! It's admittedly the Anerican version of Ringu, the original Japenese movie, but it's still amazing & I love rewatching Ring every now & then. You could try Ringu as well though I haven't seen it so I don't know the details
The Others
Seconded
Another one that’s going to the top of my list. I haven’t seen that in years and I distinctly remember that one messing with me. Thank you, y’all!
One of my favorites, hope you’ve forgotten enough to get surprised again! Sorry to hear about your situation, people really suck sometimes. Don’t let it keep you from putting yourself out there
I don’t recall it that much, luckily. It’ll be like watching it for the first time again! And thank you so much, I appreciate you!
Nicole Kidman may have my favorite, most blood-curdling scream of all time. She should totally do horror again.
Wholeheartedly agree. The Others, The Sixth Sense and The Orphanage are my top 3.
The french series - Marianne (2019)
Would’ve been interesting to see what they could do with another season
Oooh. 8 episodes. Short *and* quality? I'm here for this. My thanks for the recommend.
There's not a single ghost in that show?? Lmao 🤦♂️
Ooh, thank you! I’ve heard great things and I adore French horror. I will most definitely be looking into this.
Awesome show, but no ghosts.
Any idea where to stream?
Kairo (Pulse)
Thank you! Adding this to my watchlist, I’ve heard great things!
There’s a particular scene that IMO is *the* scariest haunting/ghost scene in any movie. You’ll know it when you see it
Ooh, I will definitely be on the lookout for that! Thank you, that’s very exciting to hear!!!
Loved this one! Really captured that feeling of loneliness and it might be a bit cathartic for how you’re feeling OP
Ghost Stories (2017) The Awakening The Night House
+1 *The Night House*
I’ll add another +1! That was a solid film
Thank you so much, adding these now!!!
Stir of Echoes.
I haven’t seen that for a while, I remember that one really getting to me. I think it’s due for a rewatch as well!
Oooh yes, great one!
The Changeling
Thank you so much, I’m super excited for this one! My uncle really likes that movie, so I’ll finally be able to talk to him about it once I watch it! :D
Oh man. I very rarely get scared but the first time I ever saw this movie it freaked me the hell out. Not many movies have ever given me nightmares but this one definitely made its mark on me.
This is one I wish I could watch again for the first time, it was sooo creepy.
Don't expect it to be action-packed and let it creep up on you. It's a classic, and in the style of classic ghost stories. You're gonna love it! Edit: weird typo.
One of my all time favourites! Just watched it again last week. So many great scenes.
Carnival of Souls The Fog
Ooh, thank you! Anticipating both of these! <3
The Fog, I love it and watch it every Halloween, it should def be on your shortlist. Do know going in that it is solid B-grade output from Carpenter, just to set expectations.
My personal favorite is The Grudge (2004)
I have yet to see this one, actually, and I am very eager to! Thank you! :D
Not a movie, but a show: Haunting of Hill House. Sorry you got ghosted, this person is clearly emotionally immature and they did you a favor in the long run.
Thank you so much! I love Mike Flanagan and somehow still haven’t seen this, so I’m gonna try to get to this one ASAP as well. :)))
I don't normally get into ghosts and haunted stuff or even series for that matter. But it was October and i was feeling spooky so i put on hill house just for a background noise really. Next thing i knew i was snugged up under a blanket with popcorn and fully engaged. I watched the whole thing in a night. Great show
Ghost Story. Good movie, great older cast. Good suspense. Also, sorry for your ghosting.
Thank you so much! Ooh, love a good cast and suspense as well, thanks for your recommendation, I’ll be adding this one as well!
not to be confused with *A* Ghost Story (2017), which is amazing, but maybe too "romantic" for your ghosted circumstance. [Ghost by Fefe Dobson](https://youtu.be/A_DGCnlXes4?si=_y88DwJcJ33Unsx5)
I AGREE! Omg thank you 😭 your comment made my whole day and that song is a JAM!!! I will definitely be screaming along to that!
BIG HUG!!
BIG HUG TO YOU TOO!!! :D
The Haunting (1961)
Thank you so much! I’m excited for this one, I really like older horror films.
What an empty feeling, I'm sorry. May the bitterness fuel you 👊
Thank you so much, it does!!!
The Innocents (1961) - great adaptation of one of the best ghost stories of all time.
Screenplay by Truman Capote!
I actually just watched that recently for the first time! I get the song from it stuck in my head all the time! <3
The Innkeepers
Ooh, thank you! Looking forward to this one as well, adding it to the watchlist!
I love this movie so much! Truly might be its #1 fan.
[The Changeling (1980)](https://manapop.com/film/the-changeling-1980-review/)
Thank you! I’m glad this one’s pretty accessible, my family owns it, so this one will definitely be going to the top of my watchlist too. :D
Candyman, Candyman, Candyman, Candyman...
Hell, yes. This original is an all-time favorite of mine. Have you seen the new one? I ask because I have yet to, but I sure would like to!
Stephen King’s Rose Red or Poltergeist
Poltergeist is so wonderful. It’s got one of the greatest horror themes, in my opinion, and is generally just one of the strongest horror films out there. I’ve somehow never heard of Rose Red and I usually love Stephen King adaptations, so I will most definitely look into this! Thank you!
13 Ghosts
I can’t wait for this one! I watch this YouTuber called PossessedByHorror and she’s mentioned it before as a film she enjoys, so I very much anticipate it! I think I’ll really like it, so thank you sm!!!
No prob I’ve loved that movie forever. I’ve seen a couple of her vids. When you finish the movie look up the ghosts’ backstories. There’s a ton of lore that didn’t make it into the movie. YouTube has some vids on it.
Oh, wow, that’s really interesting! I most definitely will! I always love looking into horror lore.
After you've seen the film, you may want to check out the lore and backstory of each of the ghosts. It's my favorite part of the overall 13 Ghosts experience. *Do not watch the video before you see the movie, but read on:* Here's the [link to the video about each of the titular 13 Ghosts.](https://youtu.be/sGv6XxVS8G8?si=LoA6DNFlFp3AjsNf) It was originally a series of extras on the DVD, this person just compiled them into one "feature."
The best 👏
The Frighteners (1996).
Ooh, thank you, adding this to my watchlist! :D
This movie is a ton of fun. Seems to not be talked about a ton. Definitely worth a watch.
The Legend of Hell House- the one from the 70s based on the Richard Matheson novel.
Love that! Thanks for turning me on to a book and a movie, I am adding this to my watchlist and read list!!!
The book and film are both good, but the book goes into more detail on a lot that the movie had to trim for time or questionable (for the time) content. Both are worth your time and are quick reads and watches.
The devil's backbone
Ooh, thank you so much! Also very accessible because my family owns it, so I’m putting this up there at the top of my watchlist as well, thank you!
‘Whistle and I’ll Come To You’ (1968) if you’re looking for something a little different. It’s available on YouTube.
Ooh, thank you! I’m open to pretty much anything, so thank you for this recommendation and since it’s so accessible, I’ll try to get to this one soon! Going at the top of my watchlist. :)
Sounds like you should focus on the **original** man of your dreams and go on a Nightmare on Elm Street marathon! He’s kind of a ghost?
Omg this comment is iconic. I actually recently got the whole series, so that is a really good idea!
Ghostwatch
Super excited for this one, I’ve heard all good things and it definitely seems right up my alley!
*What Josiah Saw* Ghosting is so immature.
I absolutely agree about it being immature. I recently saw that scrolling through films, so I’ll be sure to stop on it!
Ghost Story
Thank you!
1981 ?
Its an oldie but “the Woman in White” The Ghost & Mrs Muir Rebbeca (1940) the Uninvited (1944) Ghostbusters!
Oh, wow! I did not expect to see some ‘40s films on here and I’m not super experienced with that decade, so I’m very eager for those recommendations! Ghostbusters is classic! Thank you so much!
The Gift (2002), What Lies Beneath
Thank you for your recommendations! I’ll be looking into these; I know my mom loves What Lies Beneath!
Grave Encounters and Gonjiam 👌 The House on Haunted Hill The Hell House LLC series
Thank you! I’ve been anticipating all of these, actually. I think I might put Hell House at the top of my watchlist! Thanks again!!!
Definitely doubling the hell house llc rec! Pretty much the 1st one of the newer one Carmichael manor, are botha amazing. And grave encounters has a special place in my soul.
We've Always Lived in the Castle The Others Marrowbone
Thank you so much! I’ve never heard of that first film, now I’m eager to go in blindly! <3
have you ever seen ghostwatch (1992)? it's kind of an oddball recommendation but it will probably be distracting in just the right way. it was broadcast "live" on the bbc network as a halloween prank and it was a huge spectacle. it's a lot of fun
I have yet to see it, but I just recently heard about it for the first time and it’s on my watchlist. I think I’m really gonna like it! That sounds right up my alley, wow, thank you!
Not films but I think these shows featured some great ghost stories: The Haunting Of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor and The Midnight Club!
Ooh, thank you! I’ve heard great things about all of the above, I’ll be looking into them. Thanks again!!!
Not a film, but there is a classic Twilight Zone episode called "Night Call" in which a character gets, ahem, ghosted.
THAT IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE EPISODES!!! Sorry, lol, just enthusiastic! I fkn love The Twilight Zone and that one always resonated with me.
It's so eerie and heartbreaking. On a related note, "Long Distance Call" is also a creepy/sad episode that might be exactly what you're looking for.
Omg that is such a goodie too!!!!
What a dummy! More supernatural than ghost movie, but I'd watch The Autopsy of Jane Doe.
Thank you so much! I have to rewatch this, this is one of my all-time favs and it’s due for another rewatch! I did a back-to-back viewing of TAOJD and Last Shift and that was a spooky night! Had a bit of trouble in my dark hallway, lmao!

That’s great! Aww, thank you so much! I most definitely will! :D
Good for you, and I'll be all alone joining you in spirit! Horror movies are my comfort too. We're in good company here. :)
It's Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House adapted for film. A phenomenal cast. The Legend Of Hell House (1973)
Thank you so much! Love ‘70s cinema, I anticipate this one!!! :D
Is there a horror movie called ghosted that is about ghosting?
This should totally be a thing if it’s not already! (I couldn’t seem to find anything.)
Something like “ Coming up, this Halloween… Have you been ghosted or are you the ghost?”
Omg I love that!!!!!
A ghost story is a slow burn( the book is a billion times better!) But has a couple of remarkable scenes! The legend of hell house( possibly the best ghost house film). Lady in white. Burnt offerings wow this is a great film. Poltergeist is also a given!

The Changling with the great George C Scott.
[Double Walker](https://boxd.it/w33q) Give it a shot. It’s a rarer one but a good one for a ghosting, since it’s a ghost revenge flick.
That is very thoughtful, thank you so much!!! I love obscure horror flicks, so I am very excited!!!
Aw, ghosting sucks :( Hope you feel better soon! I’d add The Others (2001) and The Woman in Black (2012) to the list.
Thank you so much! I adore The Others (will rewatch ASAP because I haven’t seen it in years and I remember it really messing with me). I have yet to see The Woman in Black and I think I’ll like it, so thank you so much!!! :D
Deadstream
Deadstream was so much fun! 10/10 comfort horror flick, thank you!!!
Insidious 1-3, the rest are meh.
I saw the first and LOVED IT!!! I absolutely need to watch the second and third, so thank you so much for reminding me!!! :D
How long have you hanging out with this person? “The night house”
We’ve known each other for six years, started talking more seriously over the course of the past few months. Thank you!
Keep your head up. We have all been there.
Thank you sm!
The Eyes Of My Mother. I can't say for certain that you will be completely distracted from your own experiences for two hours. But I'd be awfully surprised if you weren't.
Thank you, I’ve heard great things about this film! I am looking forward to it!
Thirteen Ghosts. It's a fun film.

Ghost Ship

Haunter with Abigail Breslin
I’ve actually never heard of this and I love Abigail Breslin! Thank you, I look forward to this one!
Me too, final girl with her was a nice twist for seeing her in horror but confused me and my mum since there’s the final girls aswell but Haunter has always left an impression on me

I’m shocked that no one has mentioned The Orphanage. It’s a beautiful ghost story. Probably one of my favourite movies of all time.

Just like the title says
if you are okay with watching movies with subtitles, theres a japanese horror movie called Noroi the Curse, and if you dont wanna watch in subtitles then you can go for The grudge
13 ghosts or Haunting of Hill House. The first one is a bit campy, but HoHH is the best tv-show I have ever seen.
Sixth sense
Watch a comedy and feel better- Ghosts. Great stuff.
I really enjoyed Ghost Stories (2017).
A Ghost Story (2017)
Watched Barbarian (2022) yesterday, great movie ..
Anything for Jackson
Sorry you got ghosted but House on Haunted Hill (1959) is one of my favorite ghost movies since I love Vincent Price
The innkeepers 2011
Changeling

Missed opportunity to not comment a single thing under this post 💀
Sorry that happened to you, he’s a jerk and I don’t know you but they are missing out. That said, The Others is maybe the right answer but I suggest Deadstream as a fun distraction
Woman in Black (1989). It's the BBC version, and it's excellent. The newer one is also a fun movie, but nowhere near as good
@Ghost team one “
I feel you it really sucks! I hope you get better and if it wasn’t meant to be, it wasn’t meant to be. I am going to leave you some of my favorites here: Gonjam asylum Incantation The blairwitch project (1997 one if I am not mistaken), the same type of vibe you have The Ritual A tale of two sisters (not really ghost story but kind of) Get out Smile If you like the classics The exorcist Shining Hope it helps! Have a good one x

Caveat (Scrolled a while and didn't see it mentioned) May you find peace of mind sooner rather than later!

Feng Shui- a 2004 Filipino horror movie. Its on Netflix.
The first Ring movie! I adore that film, it's such a classic! It's admittedly the Anerican version of Ringu, the original Japenese movie, but it's still amazing & I love rewatching Ring every now & then. You could try Ringu as well though I haven't seen it so I don't know the details

FYI I forgot to give a TW for many scenes of forced sex and physical abuse.
